I hate to admit this but I actually lived this. I was 21 in 1987. I didn't live in Taiwan but here in the states and this movie so perfectly captured what it was like. The actors did a phenomenal job expressing the emotions. Being torn. Wanting something so bad but afraid. Birdy was fearful. I dont fault birdy, thats just what I was like in that time period. I too would go back and forth. What will my parents say, society. I witnessed firsthand kids who were beaten up for being different. The kid who was dragged into the bathroom and beaten, I actually witnessed stuff like this in high school in mid 80s. Do I dare profess my love for a classmate. I have watched this movie three times in two days and the raw emotion that surfaced brought back all the pain I experienced back then. I lost contact with my first love and never saw him again. I often wonder what if.....this movie captured that so well. You never forget your first love. I still think about him and see his face.
I saw this movie today and just kept thinking about how difficult it might as been for people in those times i kept thinking that there might have been people who would have experienced this, lived thru this and some would have related to this soo much. I won't say i pity you coz i think you are one of the bravest of all. I know it's difficult to accept one's feelings but it's way more difficult to know it and suppress yourself. People think it's being a coward but they have no idea how much it takes to endure. I admire that endurance and hope you are living a wonderful and fearless life coz you deserve it💜

I've gotten a few replies about it not being too late and how Birdy and A-han met back up 30 years later. Therein lies the tradgety. Birdy admitted to loving A-Han back then. You cannot go back in time and recapture the years lost. Birdy was assaulted by A-Hans roommates, they were disqualified from the contest because of song choice, etc During the shower scene Birdy knew he could not commit which is why he kept saying he was sorry. As was evident in the next scene when he avoids and ignores him. Having lived in that time...you do what you have to do to survive. Losing 30 years is tragic. I get it but so very tragic. I never saw my first love crush again and even if I did those years behind are gone. A -Han never stopped loving Birdy which is painful. Birdy masked his feelings and the wake he left was equally painful. Getting married which did not work. He cause his wife pain as well.

I can't get over this film. Every time I watch scenes from it again, my throat gets tied up and my heart drowns in endless sadness. I feel a sense of loss so overwhelming that I cannot bear it. I know that asking for a remake, I mean one with a change in the story from the moment of the phone call with the song, is an impossible request, but hopefully someone will decide to bring this couple together again in a new film, I don't care if it's a different story, I just need them to have an overflowing love story with a happy ending. The world is full of sadness, wanting films to draw a smile on your face and fill your heart with joy and calm is not a whimsical desire, it is a need and a good for the world. I don't know, this film affected me in a terrible way. Anyway, the edit is simply beautiful, and I love the song that was chosen. And what a beautiful creature Tseng Jing Hua is, just looking at him makes the soul tremble.
I have literally the same feeling as you. I can’t stop rewatching it, thinking that somehow the story will change and they will stay together. It’s a film to make you cry and bring you in a terrible sadness, but I also love it, because it has something special that brings me to watch again and again.

And remember when they met when they became old, Birdy said he was in love with him at that time and if he didn't put a stop to their growing feelings, things sure would have turned uglier than what they went through? Its like the timing was totally off, that was not the safe era for them to come out and tell the world about their love
They both knew back in that school day, but Birdy refuse to evolve the relationship. When they got older and met each other, i think they make a new start?
I think Birdy knew he was gay way before jia han and also that's why Jia han friends always tried to beat him up but he felt like it wasn't fair to "drag" Jia han into that (like he felt it was his fault that Jia han liked boys), that's why he was sabotaging their relationship, he didn't want Jia han to be hurt or to suffer what they were doing to the others gay boys, I feel like that's why Birdy was the one apologizing in the shower scene even tho he wasn't the one who made the first step :(
This is also the first scene they took. Jihan was filmed in the morning and Birdy in the evening. They hold the phone without no one on the other side and have to imagine but still emotionally immersed in the scene. I was impressed.

This film really took me on an emotional rollercoaster. I had to rewatch it again straight after to take everything in. Everything about it was done so well, and I felt so much like it was right person wrong time for them, I'm glad we got to see them 30 years onwards in Canada. It was a nice touch that ended the film comfortably.
This movie was a stab to my heart. Few movies have left me with memories. I liked Call Me By Your Name, I Told Sunset About You and then there's this one. Taiwan is probably the first asian country to legalize LGBTQ. And should have done before love birds like these had to be apart..

Yes, the chemistry the music the theme and also the political aspect behind the love , the family , the braveness to come out...it is still nowadays not easy .... this is a wonderful film with wonderful actors who give life to the protagonists of the story, they have done their job so well, excellent I would say. All Good said it best, when real love, first love, true love- doesnt stand a chance because of the time, the place, outsiders, where we are from and where we must go.. I am not gay, but I very much relate sometimes. I have loved the intensity of the actors or musicians in this little film menagerie, for awhile because it speaks softly to all of us who lost the one, that left us for whatever reason....when we were so in love, so vulnerable, and the youth of our despair, the naivete of our trust, the assumption we will get married, have a family...someday.
I love this show so much that it always breaks my heart and I want it to break my heart for how long I live I really love the actors and the emotions in this
I never watch the same movie twice, but THISSSSSS.... Oh gosh, I have no words to describe this movie except for a true masterpiece. The intense pain of A-han, how madly he loved his Birdy 🥺. And how intensely Birdly loved him back too, trying everything to convince himself otherwise. I feel Birdy did all the pushing away things not so much to drive A han away, but as desperate attempt to emotionally distance himself by hurting A-Han and making the latter feel it was all his fault. That only A-han was the one in love, chasing him. He tried to convince himself. This is the only film that I can't get over.

I watched this with my boyfriend one night, I remember we couldn’t stop saying “I love you” after. I am really, really glad we live in a better time for our relationship to grow. He’s really the best person for me, and he makes me feel infinite. Also the drama made me cry so much don’t get me started 😂
I haven't yet seen this movie but this video made me hesitant because the possible unhappy ending. Am I still going to watch the movie? Most definetly. This song is just so beautiful, by the way, it gave me this hesitant feeling; a good video is all about that, carrying an emotion and/or message across by the visual and auditory means.

They both like each others but chose the different way, Jia Han choose to try hard to confess his love, Birdy choose to run away and refuse because he scared of what will they - gay people will receive at that time if they comeout
But the ending is not so sad, i'm so happy that they have an open ending, they meet again and start again, kinda late but better late than never, not so tragic as some Asia BL movies

I am not gay, but I very much relate sometimes. I have loved the intensity of the actors or musicians in this little film menagerie, for awhile because it speaks softly to all of us who lost the one, that left us for whatever reason....when we were so in love, so vulnerable, and the youth of our despair, the naivete of our trust, the assumption we will get married, have a family...someday.
I cried with this movie, I got mad and I got sad because of their situation… It’ll be good to see them in a second part of this amazing movie.

I never watch the same movie twice, but THISSSSSS.... Oh gosh, I have no words to describe this movie except for a true masterpiece. The intense pain of A-han, how madly he loved his Birdy 🥺. And how intensely Birdly loved him back too, trying everything to convince himself otherwise. I feel Birdy did all the pushing away things not so much to drive A han away, but as desperate attempt to emotionally distance himself by hurting A-Han and making the latter feel it was all his fault. That only A-han was the one in love, chasing him. He tried to convince himself. This is the only film that I can't get over.

I haven't yet seen this movie but this video made me hesitant because the possible unhappy ending. Am I still going to watch the movie? Most definetly.
