- How to remove the automatic transmission on a 99-04 V6 Mustang. Video starts with the catalytic converter y-pipe, driveshaft, and starter removed. Video shows important removal information and install tips along with torque specifications. How to remove the top 2 transmission bolts. How to disconnect the torque converter from the flexplate.
THIS is how to make a repair video. Thank you for the simple, direct explanations including wrench sizes. Hope you make a video if you have to rebuild on of these transmissions. Great job dude.
Thanks for the upload, my New Edge's rear main seal is going out and this video will come in handy soon enough.
This is exactly what I need to do on my 02
This is amazing. Saving me thousands!
Pro tip. For the top 2 bolts just remove your intake manifold. Cheaper and less stress and saves you a trip to the store
never done it that way, would be a good opportunity to change some of them gaskets.
The wiring harness gets in the way while doing that, any tips on getting the wiring harness out of the way.... beating my head against the wall on this job
Tried it this way but the bolts are to long
@jameslawn6159 my guy must have swapped the bolts then my bad. Good on him though made it a dream
@@thelonelytuba1972 on the passenger side near your strut tower is a wiring harness connector with a 5/16 bolt. It's quick and easy and worth a try. Should allow you to move the wiring harness. Not sure though
Excellent video. Was planning to follow along with this until I realized it’ll be hard to turn the crank shaft of a seized motor 🙃. Now I’m not sure what the “easiest” option is.
In theory you should be able to remove the transmission leaving the torque converter in place on the flex plate, you'll just have to have enough room to slide the transmission more to clear the converter, you'll have to reinstall the torque converter onto the transmission when you reinstall it on the new motor, aswell as you'll have to replace all your transmission fluid since the converter will spill its fluid once disconnected from the transmissions input shaft, there's no way around this because the transmission has an anti drain back valve for the converter so draining the pan won't be enough, just be mindful of that and have a bucket under you when you pull it, otherwise it's not much different of a process, once separated you should be able to unbolt the converter without being able to turn the motor
Could I get away with not doing the torque converter bolts and just pulling the transmission off?
Nope, I've tried this before. What happens is there is not enough clearance for the bellhousing to clear the left behind torque converter when pulling the transmission. It hits the bottom of the car. That torque converter is going to have to be unbolted.
@@OldSchoolNoe I actually managed to get it off without doing so funny enough
@@ThugzBunnyYT what the...must have had the perfect downward angle to clear it out, nice!
@@OldSchoolNoe exactly what we did slid it back and droooped it and it’s slid down and off onto my tranny jack was a bit of a pain but it came off
Awesome thanks
Where did you get the converter holding tool
Ebay
should I have it in neutral with the parking brake on? And what about the shifter how do I go about removing that, I assume you take the trim off and it’s a couple more bolts
Yes place it in NEUTRAL, service information does not call for setting the parking brake.
As for the shifter, you don't have to remove it when removing the transmission, but if you have to remove it for any other reason then:
- yes remove the trim, around it, some electrical connectors, 2 fasteners for the shifter bezel, disconnect the shifter cable from underneath the vehicle, then I believe the shifter and its base are held on by 4 bolts.
@@OldSchoolNoe ok how do you take the key out with it in neutral, i cant figure it out unless i keep the key in there then disconnect the battery but i don’t think thats smart or right
@@robfolder you can leave it in park, and manually shift it to neutral once the linkage has been disconnected. Just become familiar with what position is what so you can set it to park once you're finishing up.
When I popped my transmission out, a small compression spring came out..
Any ideas. Same car v6 mustang
That's interesting. There is no spring near the bellhousing area. I have not rebuild this type of transmission, so not sure if its an internal piece.
Is this a manual or automatic? Does it make a difference?
this is an automatic, a manual is much easier because you unbolt the transmission from the bell housing, and can remove it separately.
Those top two bolt gave me HELL they were ON THERE
did you build "the snake?"
i heard you can get them from the top with the v8 idk about the v6
yo ik this question isnt really related to the entire removal of a transmission but is removing the top passenger side bolt (aka dipstick bolt) doable with the Mid pipe still in the car?
I would say no, since it takes up so much space in that area, BUT I have not tried it! Maybe with some swivels and extensions you can do it with the mid pipe still on. You're going to have to be a trailblazer and let us know!
@@OldSchoolNoe will do
@@OldSchoolNoe so I’m back with progress. This is do able. There is a downside you cannot do this alone you will need someone on the top to be exact a skinny person. Whoever is feeding the snake under the car needs the 2nd person to hold the socket on the bolt and then it can be cracked loose. After some turning the bolt can’t be hand loosened and removed from the top of the car.
@@ItzTeko nice one! You found a solution for a tough spot.
@@OldSchoolNoe now my only issue is getting an o ring for the bugger. Wish I could record this because I believe a good amount of people out there would like to see the way me and my dad did this lol
