It's been a long time since I've seen someone take the time or with the skills to repair those hoods like that, most of the new body men now are parts changers & won't take the time for repairs like that or insurance wants to replace with cheap Chinese junk parts. It's a pleasure to watch you work & see things done right how they used to be when people took pride in their work.
Well I certainly appreciate that, brother! Ya know... when I first posted this project on some of the truck groups on FB...I actually got my share of flak on how come I just didn't replace that hood instead of going through the trouble to fix it. I even had one jerk off tell me just how long my repairs were going to last before completely falling apart. Not only did he get a big ear full of insulting response from me...but all this time later, that truck still looks like it did the day it left here. Parts changing is so common in this country these days that a lot of people are shocked and even a little insulted when a real craftsman comes along and decides to go a different route. Things are definitely different nowadays...that's for sure.
@teams.t.e.a.m6214 You said it all when you said craftsman, & that I can say without a doubt, you are a craftsman. This new generation are mostly parts changers, & most paint & body shops have five to ten guys & different areas to do the same job you & your two boys do, They have one or two that do nothing but tear down & the same for mechanical like A/C, Power steering, wiring & other componants & have body guys & helpers & painters & their helpers & then another group that reassembles them at the end. I grew up with my Pops running his mechanic shop & buying & selling big trucks & cars & trucks too, & we did it all, he had one guy that was a craftsman like you that could build the entire side of the fiberglass hood, busted or completely missing, headlight bucket & all by using the other side or other trucks as a template. I learned from him, my dad & other people I knew or worked with over the years, by watching & just doing it, & I believe that's better than any school. There are definitely new things to learn daily, especially with all these new paint systems & fillers etc, but I always learned more by observing & doing. All of the people that criticize your skills for repairing stuff like that hood, have been brainwashed into the new lazy ways of doing things & or lack the skills or knowledge to know how to repair stuff the correct way to last like you can. I appreciate people like you that have the skills & ability to think on their own & make things & repair things by working with what you have. It's becoming a lost art in all professions these days.
Hiya Ray im andy a hgv machanic from the uk .your work is fantastic .who taught you your craft . Did you do your apprenticeship for a Truck dealership.
I am mostly self taught. I worked at a few body shops for only a few months total and learned a few basics. neither of them were truck shops. i've done everything wrong at one time or another... and that's how I figured out what works and what doesn't. trial and error over a quarter century period. Thanks!
Hiya Ray .dont laugh to much when i taught my self to do fibre glass repairs on a Truck i totally messed up i fibre glassed these rear wings on a ERF truck .and it looked great i primed them same day came back in the morning. And the fibre glass had concaved .rang a body work chap i knew and told him what i had done.he laughed and said your supposed to put body filler on top of the fibre glass . Im in my late 50s but when ever i used to go into a paint when i was in my 20s the smell of the paint thinners etc it use to make me feel sick. But when i tried some fibre glass repair and got painting with some 2 pack paint in lock down i was ok. Me and a friend are restoreing an old ERF truck hes brought a big shot blaster which we will use on his lorry chassis powerd by a big road compressor.we have been told to use meper expoxy paint . What paint do you use on your truck chassis ? Many thanks
Fantastic work! I have one dislike about your content. The moments of silence. Maybe talk through your obstacles of what your doing or play some music. It's really not a complaint. I like to see a project from start to finish in a quick post the way you're doing. Especially one done in a detailed way. Great work and hope to see many projects from your channel!!
Lovely video. Great job Ray.
Thank you kindly. I appreciated it
I really like how the stripes turned out. Those sleepers have an odd shape and the stripes kinda balanced out all the odd body lines. Great job!
hey thanks, my friend!
Awesome paint job 👍
Thanks 👍
thanks Mike!
