    I feed birds. It was 17 below here in Minneapolis this morning. I wish all the sensitive bird lovers here could view your wonderful video so that they would be less worried and fretful about our avian treasures. ( I am 78 now and fifty yrs ago I had hair as long as yours.) Time has flown but our love of nature remains and is mutual. Thanks, and best wishes.

    They are clever as well. I have noticed this year in Utah, that a finch has figured out that the Porch Light puts out some heat. When I get up before the sun rises, I see him up there every morning.

    Thank you for the video! It's been unusually cold weather here in Crestview, Florida. I've been sure to put out lots of peanut and sunflower seed for our local and seasonal, migratory birds. I've seen as much as thirty assorted chickadees, sparrows, robins, woodpeckers and others empty out my three backyard feeders each morning and again in the afternoon. Subscribed :)

    Owls have special feathers that allow them to fly silently. Part of this adaptation is having very soft feathers. Most birds have stiff feathers that are water-repellent, similar to a human raincoat. Because owl feathers are softer and more like a warm hoodie, they are also far less waterproof. Thanks for the interesting video and greetings from Upper Frankonia / Germany

    great video. the colder it is, the more seeds i put out so they can recharge the energy they are burning. In north ohio here we get juncos that come south for the winter. they know how to kick the snow to get at the seeds that have been covered. these birds have been on this earth longer than humans. they are built for this. i actually sometimes feel more bad for the birds in the hot summer trying to cool off

    I love this! I'm so glad this video got recommended to me. I absolutely adore birds. We have a quaker right now and I recently (it's still fresh to me, even though it was in Sept '22) lost my beloved Amazon, Little. You can see her in the profile pic. She was... amazing. But I've always wondered about how they get cold and hot. We try our best to give our birds what they need (the birds we had all couldn't survive in the wild; we had two cockatiels, one who had his left wing torn off by a dog and another that had her foot bitten off by a cockatoo; Little had osteoporosis and couldn't fly; Echo is missing a toe, but he's a prick who will survive the apocalypse so perhaps he'd be okay. He's the hardiest) and maintaining a good temp in the house was important because I was always paranoid when I'd see them shiver. I know tropical/sub-tropical birds have a different requirement, but do you know if parrots - specifically ones from temperate climates - would be okay in Utah winters if they'd not have had someone taking care of them? I'm sure Echo - the quaker - would be okay as he's technically an invasive species (he invades my own personal space constantly, anyway) and has destroyed infrastructure in many a state.
    Anyway, I'm glad I came across this. I used to love spending time outside watching the birds and for some reason, almost all birds have always liked me... I'd have wild birds who would love to just hang around me. It was magical. Unfortunately, I became bedbound due to disability two years ago and can no longer enjoy that. So thank you very much for this lovely video. It genuinely made me happy, which is kinda hard to do when you're in debilitating pain.
    I'd love to see more informative videos about parrots, too.

    We had lows in the single digits here recently, and I could see the birds on the ground acting like their feet hurt. A lot of them laid down in the sun until it got warmer. I put out extra seed to help them stoke their little furnaces.

    Thank you! Great video. I enjoy feeding the birds and watching them, albeit I am not particularly educated about various breeds etc. My birds will often talk when I go out w/seed, and there are days if I go out and the seed is all gone they squawk to tell me to fill the feeder. Just something I know!
    I have noticed this winter w/the bird bath freezing they try to drink even though it is frozen. I have been going out each day and removing the frozen water and adding fresh water. Of course w/in a few hours it has frozen again, but I do note some of the birds seem to be happy to have ice free water for a bit.

    So awesome! Here in Wisconsin noticed a brown headed cowbird last week, living with a large flock of chickadees. I read cowbirds typically migrate south, but he looked loved and happy and acceted bu the chickadees, in spite of the crazy cold seems he will be fine.

    • @navarreswildshots
      @navarreswildshots  14 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      They do typically migrate but some are permanent residents depending on how south they are. Also, it could be the case that it was a more northern cowbird that did migrate, and your area is the "southern area" to it, whereas your local cowbirds went further south

    • @charlesmartin1121
      @charlesmartin1121 9 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Could be that particular Cowbird was a nest parasite raised by an unsuspecting pair of Chickadees, and it has imprinted on it's 'adoptive parents.'

    Very cool and interesting video. I’ve always had a love for birds even as a child. I have lots of backyard birds. I have a lot of natural food on my property and a lot of trees but obviously not as much natural food in the winter so I started feeding them this year and enjoy it so much I will continue. (they probably enjoy it more lol) It’s nice to know they’re not as cold as I thought they were.

    Idk why youtube recommended this video but boy I'm happy it did, it answered a very interesting question how can those tiny masses remain warm.
    Next life, I'd be a bird for sure, they might not considered very bright (though I question the validity of this common sentiment) but they can fly and apperantly not that bothered by cold weather.

    Wow! So that's where all our robins go? Never saw a bush full of them. In Ontario and Québec, Canada, we only see them alone or with a spouse and baby. Then they disappear in the winter overnight. All the birds you showed can live up here in the winter, even robins if stuck due to an injury as long as there's not too much snow. IT reached -24F (-31C) this week, we gave them more suet and seeds. They also arrive later in the morning than on 'warmer' days. They are said to become a bit comatose overnight to conserve energy as well. Many sleep close to each other.

    • @navarreswildshots
      @navarreswildshots  12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I've noticed that too, on extra cold mornings it takes the birds 15-30 minutes longer to show up at the regular spots. When the snow covers the ground there's less food availability, so you see many birds at the few spots with food

    Since you mentioned Dinosaurs. Here is a mind blower: multi-ton duckbilled dinosaurs (Edmontosaurus) survived in the Arctic with no feathery coat whatsoever. And the current scientific concensus is they remained there throughout the winter darkness. And while it is true the arctic was nowhere near as cold as it is at present during the Late Cretaceous, temperatures were still below freezing for extended periods during the winter darkness.

    Thanks, I’ve also been wondering about this. Used to live in woods of central Kentucky and I see these tiny little birds 🐦 flitting around or standing on the road.🧐 How, just how! They were so tiny. That December snow storm a couple of years ago in Kentucky, I snapped a photo of a desperate male cardinal trying to scoot under the grill my kids had on their raised deck, poor thing. I think he probably did survive that surprise storm.

    Good info, nice background track.. Maybe turn it down a little though, hard to hear you over the birds!

    But isn't there a temperature limit that birds can withstand for x amount to time before freezing to death? Plus what about the squirrels 😟. I thought it was a slower heart rate/hibernation that saved animals from the cold.
