    Thank you for posting this video. I have a bad relay, wasn't sure which one. So I changed out all of them. I had a disassembled onkyo and kept all the pcb's from it. It was a different model, but All relays matched up which made it a quick and easy repair. Thanks again

    How ironic that I am watching this with no sound. I have a Onkyo TX-DS575
    and just bought a TCL Roku 4K 43S431 and I am having nothing but problems.
    Either no voice at all, or I go into nvidia control panel and turn off the TV
    and My PC now has sound. Another big one is the three Dell monitors in
    4370 x 1080 res and the tv on top, the mouse wont leave the TV and all
    of the programs You want to control are unreachable with mouse
    on bottom 3 screens. I know I need to call cust svc and get help, and
    that My problems are not going to need me to take My under warrenty unit
    apart, so I am happy for others who need info like what You gave here.

    hey quick question
    i have the txds575x model its identical to the one you repaired in this video.everything in the front panel is working fine but the A and B speaker buttons dont work nearly as properly, the relay for A instantly trips,my father checked the relay for A by desoldering them but the relays are fine but when the above mentioned switch's connector is removed relay works fine but when it is connected it trips,and sound isn't there either.

    I have a ONKYO TX-DS575 receiver. I bought it a long time ago. Sometimes the sound from the center speaker sounds low noise and noise. After a while, it sounds normal.
    Does changing audio output capacitors solve the problem? What are all these capacitors?
    Also, can I use a WD40 for a rotary encoder? Is it enough?
    Thank you....

    • @NebukadV
      @NebukadV  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't know, what you mean by "audio output capacitors" - the only important capacitors in an amp like this are the big filter capacitors in the power supply, but these usually don't go bad.
      If you can solve the problem with your center speaker by raising the volume for some seconds, it's most likely the Hongfa Relay (look at 21:20).
      About the rotary encoder: When you clean it, you will have to get rid of all the original lubricant. Originally, they used a quite stiff lubricant, to give you that soft feel, when you turn the know. WD40 is not solid at all so the know won't feel very nice afterwards. Electrically, it should work fine.

    Also I found direct matches for the black relays from digipen but not finding a source for the white one. Label says DQ1SU 24VDC then on another line says 5A 50VAC. Is the coil voltage 24v and the switching voltage 50V? Any chance you could share a source for this one?

    • @NebukadV
      @NebukadV  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The coil voltage (24V DC) is more or less the only important thing here. A higher Switching Voltage/Current Rating is nice to have, but since these relays are usually not operated under load, these figures don't really matter. The replacment part (the Hongfa one) is actually an exact replacement and I have a link to a (german) reseller in the description.
      Could you be so kind to tell me, what replacement you found for the black ones? It could save me some time and efford in the future ;)

    Thanks for making this video. I have a TX-DS777 which is similar, but a little different than yours. We have had the rotary encoder issue for a few years . . and very recently no more sound. Before tackling the relays, is there a way to confirm that they are definitely the cause? Wouldn't I have had intermittent issues or have lost sound from specific speakers as each relay failed? Are there any other potential causes? The relays are cheap, but looks pretty involved to swap the out.

    • @NebukadV
      @NebukadV  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      First, you should do a software reset (your model might have a different procedure).
      Then, when it's the relays, you should be able to get the sound back for some time by cranking up the volume, testing different sources (also the 5 channel input) and switching the speakers on and off multiple times. Also, the Headphone output should still work fine, if it's the relays.
      You are right, normally you would have intermittent issues first and you would lose one channel at a time.
      Unfortunately, I don't know of any other causes for this problem (yet).

    • @DJPhantomRage
      @DJPhantomRage 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have the same issues with my DS777. I cleaned the encoder, and at this time want to just replace the encoder with a new one.
      I have a feeling it's just past the point of repairing and the CPU is seeing changes, causing the left channels to lower in volume. A power reset brings the levels back to normal.
      The problem I am having is finding a part number of the encoder, as I don't want to dissemble the receiver just to get the part numbers. (I know,) it's still being used.

    my amplifier (onkyo) has 180w and its really strong, but i have a problem... if i overload the volume the audio cutts off for 5 seconds and then turns audio again on? i hear a relay inside clicking? what should i do? is there any fix to modify it for higher volume speakers?

    • @NebukadV
      @NebukadV  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's completely normal, that the amplifier shuts off the output, when it is overloaded.
      But in normal condition, you should not be able to overload the amplifier, unless you connect speakers with too little impedance (check your amplifiers and speakers rating for that) or you they are defective. Otherwise, 180 Watts should be WAY MORE than enough for every scenario you could have at home.
      If you could tell me the exact type of your amp and your speakers, I could have a deeper look into it.

      When the Headphone-Output is affected as well, it's typically not a Problem with the relays. You can try to open the unit and just reseat all the connections (unplug them, clean them, but them back in). I have found that to be sufficient on multiple Onkyo receivers.

    HI There, I have the same amplifier on my repair desk but with a different problem. I have sound but after a while the amp just shutdown and the right side cooling vin is really hot. Any ideas on what it could be? I check the transistors and the voltages already. But nothing there that could generate this problem.

    • @NebukadV
      @NebukadV  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, Captain, that does sound like an interesting issue.
      Do you really have sound from all outputs before this happens? If I remeber correctly, this unit has dix dedicated power-stages. Maybe try all outputs - also "Front speakers B", maybe you'll find one channel, that is not working.
      In any case, a hot heat sink is a good place to start. Since the transistors are the only thing that can warm up the heasinks, one of them is getting way to hot. Maybe one of the is broken, even if it measures correctly on low voltages, or the driving circuit is pushing way too much bias current through it. You should be able to find the corporate, by measuring the voltage over those white ceramic power resistors. They should read something, that corresponds to about 5-20 mA. Maybe one of them is reading way higher than the others. If you can' t reach the legs of those resistors, you could also measure between the emitters of the two transistors in each pair.

    I'm hoping you are still answering questions. Great video by the way! We have the same unit and can not get it to hold settings. It went from working perfectly to holding the settings briefly while the unit was on to now nothing. All over a period of a couple months. Currently we have no sound coming out. We've done the reset as well as the headphone test with no success. We've never had an issue with the dial (rotary encoder) so I'm not quite ready to tackle that. Any suggestions on what it could be? No sound and will not hold the 'dolby digital' surround sound settings. Thanks in advance.

    • @NebukadV
      @NebukadV  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      For holding the settings, this units uses what's called a "supercap", which is somethink like a small recharable battery. It is mounted somwhere on the fronpanel-/display-board, that sit's right in behind the front of the unit.
      This unit uses a DX-5R5L104 from ELNA (www.elna-america.com/products/pdf_files/DoubleLayer/DXe.pdf, but you can use basically every supercap with >= 5.5 V and >= 0.1 F.
      I would suggest, to get the board out first so you can have a look at the original supercap and find a replacement. Maybe that also get's rid of the no-sound problem.

    • @WonderdogMika
      @WonderdogMika 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you have any experience working with an Onkyo HT-R520 with loud ass popping/cracking randomly from all speakers followed by no sound? It'll sometimes go back to proper operation by switching between several surround modes until you find one that isn't popping randomly. OR, it just decides not to work at all. I miss my surround sound. :(

    • @NebukadV
      @NebukadV  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I sure don't have any experience with that particular model or that particular problem.
      If it happens on all speakers, it's not the relays, sadly.
      I would suspect some power rail to be dodgy, which might be caused by a bad electrolytic cap. But that's nothing but a first guess and there is no real way, I could help you here.
      A quick google search turned up this page - they talk about some 2R2-labelled coil, that might have gone bad. So if you have a multimeter, go ahead and measure all the 2R2-labelled coils in your unit for continuity (

      @@NebukadV Thanks for the tip. I can't seem to ever have any normal problems. You would love to see the insides of my other 25 year old Onkyo. It glowed red hot and roasted the entire section of the board that runs the surround system. I had it screaming loud with all sorts of distortion while highly intoxicated and not paying attention. It melted the solder and components are blackend and loose on the board. To this day I have no idea how the fuse didn't blow or trigger the damn protection circuit The front mains and B sub room outputs still crank like the day I bought it in 1995. I planned to scrap the 520 unit as I can buy a much better one used for like 50 bucks, but I may go ahead and break out the ol meter now.

    Dumb question. Can I just remove the relay and jumper the connections or do I need the relay.

    • @NebukadV
      @NebukadV  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That question is not nearly as dumb as you might fear ;)
      Short answer: Yes you can. Long answer: Maybe you shouldn't :)
      There are several reasons for these relays:
      - On receivers like this one, you can have different "scenarios" you can activate like 5.1, 4.0 and 2.0 (Stereo). Depending on that, the receiver disables the unused speakers by switching off the corresponding relays. However, there should be no sound on the unused speakers anyway, so by switching off the relay you just get rid of the (very quiet) background hum/noise, that every speaker emits when its connected to the receiver. So for this point, it would no big deal to just jumper the relay contact.
      The other reason is the fact, that these realys are part of the "protection circuit" for the speakers. As the name suggests, it protects the speakers in two ways:
      - Whenever the receiver is powered on or off, the power stages insinde are not stable but instead produce some weird voltages on the output. To "hide" these effects, the relays are always open during power-up or -down of the receiver. They close a couple of seconds after the unit is powered on and open before the unit shuts off. When the relays are bridged, you would hear these effects on the speakers. In practice, you would hear quite a lound *plop* for every speaker, each time you power the unit on or off. Some amplifiers dont have any relays and you can hear every time. While not beneficial for the speakers, it is usually also not harmful for them - although no guarantee for that!
      - When a part of the amplifier section fails, it's usually one of the power transistors, that fails short. In that case, the output for one speaker might go to the full DC voltage of the amplifier section (40-50 V DC). A voltage like this will kill the speaker connected to it (or at least the low-frequency-driver of it) in give or take one second. The protection circuit will detect a fault like this and switch the corresponding relay of in some 100 ms. If you bridge the relays and a fault like this ever occurs, you will lose a speaker as well.
      So in summary:
      If you just want to get you receiver back up and running and the speakers you wanna use are not extremely dear to you, you can definetely just jumper all connections. There is no reason why it shouldn't work.
      If however you really want to restore the receiver to a fully functional state or you don't like the idea of blowing up a speaker in case of back luck, you should go and grab some replacement relays.
      Hope, this explanation was understandable and did help you. Cheers!

    • @NebukadV
      @NebukadV  ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, first of all, I have not come across this issue so far.
      I also don't know exactly, what regulators you mean. If you could at least give me the component designators (ie. IC 27), I could look it up in the schematic.
      The first thing you should do is find out, which regulator is getting too hot. It is very unlikely, that more than one component is bad.
      If have have identified the regulator that is getting too hot, there are 2 possible reasons:
      1) The regulator is bad (unlikely) or has a bad contact to the heatsink (possible)
      2) Something on the 5V is pulling too much current and overloading the regulator (very likely)
      That could be a bad capacitor or a failing IC. Hard to tell. If you desolder the overheating regulator and measure a low resistance (single Digit Ohms) on the rail it creates, that is a place to start.

      There will be a small battery on the fron-panel-PCB or on another PCB, that stores the settings and so on. If you cannot find a battery, it might also be something called super-capactior or supercap. Looks much like a coin-cell battery with a voltage rating of 5.5V most likely and a capacitance in the range of 0.1 F to 1F (yes, that's actually farad). • @NebukadV
      @NebukadV  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The relays always click, even if they are bad. The part, that goes bad, is the contact surfaces inside. You can try hitting the relays with a blunt object to see, if they then make proper contact. But to be able to measure them, you also have to completely disassemble the whole unit.
      This is not a guarantees fix. This is mainly an instruction on how go swap the relays. I have seen it fix the issue multiple times, but I have also seen multiple units, that were not fixed by this. It's up to you in the end.

      I relay will (practically) awlays make that click sound and can still be faulty. The click sound only means, that the mechanical part inside the relay is moving. Whether that leads to a proper electrical contact or not, depends on the condition of the switching contacts and you can't hear that ;)
      One thing to check first would be feeding in a digital signal (via Toslink or coaxial SPDIF). If that brings back you sound, then there is a problem somewhere else (in the DSP most liekly). If you still get no sound, you should change the relays.

    Hello i have the same reciver, but I have another problem, i hop can you help me...i turn on the reciver, and all the buttons dont make the fuction ...for example: I press botton V1 and in the display appers information of "V2" or "TApe" or "FM" or "AM" so even when a try to reset to factory settings i have to press many times "V1" an "Speakers A"...finally I reset the reciver but the problem persist. Thanks...

      I don't exactly get what you want to say. Do the buttons don't work at all (i.e. most of the times, when you press them, nothing happens) or do they do the wrong thing (i.e. you press the "FM" buttong, but "TAPE" comes on)?
      Anyway, there is not really a "fix" that I could just tell you right away. Could be many things. Maybe, one button is dirty or stuck, maybe a ribbon cable inside is lose or not making good contact, maybe a capacitor is dead and thus some voltages are not stable, maybe an IC is damaged. Impossible for me to tell at this point.
      If you're comfortable with that, you can take the unit apart, remove, clean and reinsert some ribbon cables in the Front-Panel area. You could also go as far as cleaning the individual switches with contact cleaner or pure alcohol, but somehow, I don't think, this would fix your problem.

    gutes video ich nutze einen 5TX-DS575x ... jedoch funktioniert er ganz gut jedoch wenn er einige Zeit nicht an war springen die Lautsprecher erst ab höherer Lautstärke an ...
    Ich habe mal gehört, dass Standby besser ist für die Geräte / Spulen?

    • @NebukadV
      @NebukadV  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Springen beide bzw. alle Lautsprecher gleichzeit an, wenn du die Lautstärke hochdrehst, oder unabhängig voneinander? In letzterem Fall sind es mit Sicherheit auch die Relais.
      Bzgl. Standby:
      Standby hat den Vorteil, dass man das Gerät per Fernbedienung einschalten kann.
      Ganz aus hat den Vorteil, dass das Gerät dann absolut keinen Strom mehr aufnimmt.
      Mehr Unterschiede gibt es (zumindest bei Verstärkern/Receivern) nicht.

      @@NebukadV habe es nochmal getesten ich meine eher mal der eine nach dem anderen ab und zu auch mal gar nicht je nach dem wie oft ich den receiver nutze ... zum Standby hatte den AV mal eine Zeit ausserbetrieb dann haben sich die Einstellungen gelöscht gibts da eine Batterie? Hab den noch nie offen gehabt mein Vater hatte den mal einst neu gekauft und ich hab den dann vor über 10 Jahren von ihm abgekauft ... meiner ist in silber/gold ich finde die optik noch immer modern ... im Ausland (warmes Klima) hat mein Vater einen TX-SR876 in Betrieb jedoch wird der ohne ende heiss und macht bereits Probleme nun hab ich gesehen dass man sogar Lüfter installieren kann // die internen Lüfter springen gar nicht erst an

      @@steffo2oo2 Es gibt soetwas wie eine Batterie, ja. Genau genommen ist ein glaube ich bei diesem Gerät ein "SuperCap" oder Superkondensator. Der lädt sich relativ schnell auf, wenn das Gerät an ist, und hält dann einige Tage oder vielleicht auch ein paar Wochen.

    Thank you for helping so many people with Onkyo receivers. I have a similar ‘no sound’ issue on my TX-DS797. I’ve tried different sources but there is no sound from speakers and headphones. I have also cleared settings. Could the relays be the issue or something else?

      Why wouldn't it be the relays?

      All inputs of this receiver (excluding the Phono one) can be used as an auxiliary input. Don't really get the question.
