Making a tire without air is not a problem. The problem is making a tire without air have the same performance as a tire with air, while weighing as much as air, and that's just impossible.
yeah the tyre has to deform to grip properly, and being able to adjust pressure to get that just right for certain situations, only air can do that.
Like EV vs Petrol/Diesel.
hahaahahahaa.....too obvious!!!
Seems like a tire made of a medium stiff rubber foam would be good for off roading
Yup, it's basically a case where we stumbled on the best way to make a tire early on. From there, it's just about making the tire itself stronger, lighter, more grippy, and more durable. We're better off pursuing tech like self-sealing layers and auto-inflation systems than we are trying to get rid of the air.
Joe completely missed the "dog knob red" comment at the beginning and I'm sure he would have cracked up if he got it 🤣

Is there a reason he had 20 year old tires on the car ?
Nothing gets past ol' Brad here...
@@ryanmussell739Expensive garage queens with very low mileage tend to keep the original tires after 20 years. Nothing unusual sadly.

So glad it wasn't anything to do with excessive speed.
Best comment.
Actually.. what exactly is excessive speed when the car is built/made, engineered to be driven at high speed.
Does it come down to the driver, definitely, the person driving was no professional, the car had crappy tires that should have been replaced, most importantly, that car was not really meant for everyday driving, it is in my opinion a track car. That type of car took away two lives, I'm not saying that the ending would be different had there been new tires/tyres on the vehicle, or a professional driver were behind the wheel, but either was some cars are built just for money with no regard for safety of life.
@Sigma1_969 no one said the car can't go fast. But the speed was excessive given the road conditions and location.
@@themercedestraveler9566 it is tragic either way.. The Loss of Paul reminds me of the time I heard of Heath passing, just tragic, and maybe preventable.

Actually the Porsche Carrera GT is notorious for being squirrelly and being literally right at the limit of traction and handling without the driver realizing.
* With the tire technology available at the time.
Several reviewers have since driven Carrera GTs with brand new tires and from what they've reported, tire technology has improved so much over 20 years that it has changed the way the car drives.
Using a different example, Bridgestone re-released a tire exclusively in Japan called the SF-325 (launched in 1987 and discontinued in 2003) because newer tires, even having the same tread width, are stickier now than they were in the 90's. It was developed in collaboration with Mazda to put them on the NA Miata/MX-5, giving it the same driving feel as it did from factory, but with some improvements to the compounds for improved durability and fuel consumption.
Tires are one of the most important components in any car, since they're the only thing actually connecting you to the surface you're driving on.
Anyone would've crashed, too, because it had OLD TIRES.
Every Carrera Gt was sold with a written warning to the buyer, saying basically that the car was really pretty much a race car, and therefore had the handling characteristics of a race car and would behave very differently than a street car when pushed to near it's limits.
It stated that therefore only a professional driver should push the car to near its limits! Paul Walker's business partner was only an amateur race car driver!

People always talk about mileage for tires but they never mention age. Very cold weather can blow old tires that otherwise look fine.
Same of they get to hot
Bottom line, the person driving the car was irresponsible.
It wasn't because of the technology, it was because of the age, tires breakdown and lose integrity over time. RV and trailer tires have date codes on them because they are generally replaced because theyre too old, not because they're worn down.
Tires have a chemical date...it's literally stamped right into them
Car tires do as well......here in Europe common practice is to replace tires that are older than 7 years.....
Agreed. Tires have expiration dates on them.
@@geekystevedtires don't actually have expiry dates on them. There's a production date hidden in a code on the tire. It takes someone to know the shelf life of a tire and how to read the DOT code to know if the tire is actually still good or not

Lightbulbs used to last forever; it was industry that developed bulbs that would only last a certain amount of time. When I was a kid, I went to the Edison museum and the lightbulbs he had invented and made himself were still functioning. I am pretty sure you can still buy extra long lasting bulbs if you have certain disabilities that make it difficult to change them.
Your dead right. I think there is a fire station in New York that has had a lightbulb running continuously for over 100 years (if not New York then somewhere else in the U.S). There was a big engineering change because they lasted too long.
Course. Wouldn't do for making money if you stopped buying essentials
Thanks. There's a lightbulb in a firehouse in the East Bay near SF that is still burning. Every 24/7 for over a hundred years.
He made bulbs out of hemp
The key to those forever incandescent bulbs is low voltage and relatively dim lighting. The change in bulbs mentioned is that they were set for higher lumens as that’s what the market wanted. The price was shorter life. The incandescent can be made to last longer at the same lumens with more tungsten and higher quality vacuum sealing, but that would drive the price much higher. The current true “long life” bulbs cost more and have less light output ( lumens).
As a child, I had a tricycle that had tires with no air in them.
"Dog knob red"? 🤣🤣🤣
Didnt get it until you spelled it out lmao
The crash with Paul Walker came from the rear suspension having a known coil suspension separation problem. The top of the piston will separate from the body of the shock. Causing the coil to unload and send the car sideways.
I saw this on an episode of DDE 🙌🏻 very true
Wow, very interesting! I did not know that.
So is not from the crazy speed?
Me too lol@@thesaltycut7596
Lol, what a Los of BS pushed by greedy lawyers. The rule is simple, any 6+ years tire is not guaranteed withholding any big load, longitudinally or transversaly. They died because they drove way too fast on the street(no track, no safety zones) with rotten tires. It's that simple. Everything else is ..Fast and Furious BS.
A comment I once read always stuck with me: Even with good quality tires, the amount of rubber making actual contact with the road surface is about the size of your hand.
Crotch rockets contact area is about 1" x 1.5"... both wheels combined.. it's always amazed me how sticky rubber actually is on the road when I'm leaned into a corner lol
What if it's a 315?
This was like basically nothing about Paul walker and his accident. It was like a soundbite clickbait title. But Chris Harris is one of the Goats if not The Goat IMO when it comes to car reviews and test drives so I’m excited to circle back and watch this full interview!
Airless tires don’t work for road applications due to the requirement of a stable sidewall and the excessive weight of anything relative to AIR.
As my Dad told me when i got my license, "Son, if you hit a tree that don't give an inch, so if you are going to be hot rodding don't do it on a tree lined street".
Close your eyes and picture Joey Diaz saying....'Hey Joe Rogan, i took half an 8ml brownie. Im telling you, i was flying. I started to have a panic attack. My face must have looked dog knob red. '
They do tyres without air, usually for armoured cars. They also do ones with a solid interior so if they get a puncture, the car doesn't go onto the rims. However, these tend to be heavy and not suitable for smaller and sports cars . You need a good engine and suspension to counter the excess weight
0:35 i visit the crash site, oddly the building facing the driveway has a camera on the corner of the building facing the driveway they hit 🤷♂️ also the last turn, nobody ever mentions, has a huge dip right in the middle, I can definitely imagine a car hitting that and the rear kicking out, maybe they did this kind of stuff all the time on that turn. Also note, the turn after the crash, is like an odd 90 degree turn so going that fast to then have to make a 90 degree turn, just strange bit of road to go that fast, not to mention concrete lamp poles.
They were eyewitnesses that said they saw a drone launching a missile at the care before it crashed
Where's the 16 year old girls he was grooming
When light bulbs were first invented they didn’t need to be replaced. I believe the first one Tom Edison crafted is still working
Non-pneumatic tires have existed for decades. The drawbacks for a road/race care are severe; the service life is shorter, the weight is higher, the cost is more etc….
And to think some road users will pick the cheapest tyres they can get.
Unfortunately that’s me. I pay around £75/ $98 a tyre. Can’t afford much else.
"proper dog nob red!" 💄🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Joe had no idea what he meant when he said " sprung mass interfering with the suspension"! It was a great point that went completely over his head!
Not only the age of the tire when it was sold but when it was made. All legal tires have a date code on them. You can see the code in an oval near the size
imprint. It shows the year and the week. When buying from the discount tire companies online, they sometimes buy old stock from retailers. Caveat emptor!
It makes a load of sence! 😮
It's not the technology so much as the degradation over time any tire over 7yrs old is a will pop. Rodas being a professional driver should have been on his A game and understood that. Tires loose all aspects of safety and performance once they are made especially once mounted and inflated heat cycled
I’m right there with ya, pissed at Roger for not taking it serious enough to not go fast enough to put them in harms way. Shit happens I guess.
Couldn’t easily have revved up the car to the RPMS that were seen at close to 100mph to get a bit of that fix…
It goes to show, that cars like that are not a game.
I put some old hard tyres on my 253ci Holden HK Ute. It gave it the performance of a 350ci Chev because I could now spin the tyres from acceleration through all the gears.
Air provides properties that are superior, and the air doesnt change significantly or wear out. A mechanical substitute would.
Well Joe...maybe because air is the perfect medium for tires!? Strong compressive strength, cheap, plentiful, light...
What he was say8nv about the tyre with no air effecting the suspension is the bounce. A solid tyre will flex back with much more force. Plus it won't flex as much so the suspension would have to deal with a lot more. Ride would be extremely rough.
You can't adjust the pressure in a solid tyre. Front tyre pressure is different to rear pressure so you would need to manufacture a different tyre for every 'pressure'.... In every tyre size....
It is difficult to run your car at many events due to tire requirements because dual use tires are in low demand and so they can sit in a warehouse for months or years, so even though you order a new tire it is expired from a safety inspection point of view, usually 6 months old if I recall is the limit for running at Daytona.
I feel different about Paul Walker now knowing he dated a 16 year old
I didn't know that
@@PaulDickson-yi2vw he was 34 when he met her she was 16
Clear tires did exist at one point they had lights in them like lil kids light up shoes but they didn't grip and wore out quick
Michelin makes my favorite motorcycle tires ever: Road 5s. Better wet than most tires are dry. Especially good in mixed conditions. I believe they have sixes out now and I’m sure they’re fantastic, but I’ve only personally experienced the 5s.
It was an industrial area where they were going excessively over the speed limit. They hit a light standard and the car exploded. It had nothing to do with the tires it was just a nut trying to race on a regular road instead of a race track.
There is more technology in todays tires on a Honda Civic than when Mario Andretti raced at Indy 500!!! LoL... And the other side if Paul Walkers disaster is as Jay Leno mentioned in another video. A number of GTC's came with poor or relatively defective (?) rear struts. A good number of owners actually replaced. Tires & shocks a deadly combo if both are out of date...
They make airless tires for bobcats and skid-steers, that you can see thru the many holes for flexibility and weight savings . They had them for a long time. Just drill out the bobcat rims and bolt to your cars . Get a re-tread when they wear out.
I mean, they DID make a lightbulb that didn't need to be replaced.
they have made tires with out air..... Shark Tank episode.
They made honey comb tires that has no air
The air isn't the problem, Corky.

There was 2 dips in the road ,on a corner ,going 100+ they lost control.
You need air in the tire to dissipate heat folks. They need to be able to expand and contract because of constantly changing temperatures
This was a problem with the old Ford Explorer. I had a first year Explorer and the tires still had plenty of tread left at 80k miles but the Firestones were dry rotting. They were 5 years old. Just changed my wife’s Mustang tires at 6 years for the same reason. They are great for Smokey burnouts tho.
If I remember correctly if an Indy car driver says that car is crazy. Then you know it's a handful.
The tyres would be mega expensive (funny how celebs don’t think about that) and still have the same shelf life. Couple of years, damage to the structure. Plus rubber contracts when heated as opposed to air that expands. The balance is easy to calculate. Especially when the cars load changes. If it was just rubber you could never alter them and they’d probably contract so much they wouldn’t last long before perishing.
It’s basically because air works so well for the price point compared to anything else. Maybe water but even water has more resistance.
Those tires don't dissipate heat as well as what we've been using. Great fir lunar landings, nit so great for daily commute in Arizona during 115 deg.
Man, it was an accident that should’ve been avoided. I like cars myself and also race on the track on weekends but you gotta know the road you drive on. A real shame. He was at a charity event that day. RIP Paul Walker he was a legend and his legacy lives on.
Money, is the only answer. No good making a product that is beneficial to the consumer.
4 or more year old tires are trash. Rubber degrades. . .
Most people kind of forget when they soup up their cars or even when driving high performance cars, your tyres are the most important part of the car. It doesn't matter if you have 1000hp, you only have about at best, 14 or 15 square inches of tyre touching the road transmitting all that power to the road.
1:24 Chris can’t believe Joe is asking him about airless tires. The look of disappointment on his face 🙂↕️ as he realizes he has to talk about this as if he has any better idea than any other average person. He’s not an engineer.

The original dodge viper to this day is still one of most dangerous cars of all time. But due to you said it old technology and old tires that makes them extremely dangerous to new to them owners in the present. However. You spend the money on modern day rubber and boom it really tamed the beast and makes night and day life and death difference
The problem isn't old tyres, it's DUI.
If you driving a vehicle to full performance you as the driver should check the dates
The only solid tyres I know of are on forklifts and old push bikes.
more weight on the outside of the tire means more force to drive the tire. modern bikes have disc brakes, these are heavy, but then the sidewalls of the wheels are not needed to be reinforced for rim brakes, this makes the rim much lighter and more options for design leading to a wheel that is low inertia and spins faster easier. so the question is, how to make a tire lighter, yet able to handle high speeds and not deform.
I had a bad feeling (premonition)about Walker dying young from a tragic accident when I watched the movie The Skulls when the way he died in the movie at the end.He falls accidentally and breaks his neck.
Or it was karma for messing with super young girls
@@gasNmudtv That a fact?
It was taken over remotely
Non air filled tyres are making for a rock hard ride, faster wear and tear due to graining and are much more expensive and not readily available.
Heat is the main problem for the airless tyres.
They don't make tires without air do to "unsprung weight" that's the first thing
All tires are sprung mass not just ones made out of springs 😂
You are less likely to die with old tires, when you drive on public roads, as outlined by the law.
Not not to mention, the insane centrifugal forces at 150 mph.
It's nearly impossible with today's compounds to make an airless tire that will withstand those forces regulaarly, & not weigh 30-40 lbs each...
Pretty sure the suspension failed on the Porsche Carrera GT which then became a recall thing.
Happened to Daily Driven Exotics as well
They barely even mentioned Paul Walker it was Joe saying it. They didn’t go into details of Paul Walker neither. Video is title spam.
If you make a tire that doesn’t wear out, it wears out the roads too fast. Cheaper to replace tires.
Not sure if it was mentioned but Paul was the passenger..the driver who sadly also died was a professional race car driver . And if you've seen the scene if the accident..its wild that they managed to crash into what looks to have been the only pole in the area . From what i remember at least. Just a freak accident that sadly took two lives .
His wreck in death had everything to do with pushing the limits, but if the rubber is hard and dried out, you just took away your only grip or chance those cars are built around those tires
FYI tires go through heat cycles. With no wear they still go bad they become hard super Dangerous no traction.

They have developed a tire with no air. Offroad use only, very heavy as well...
So, driving at three times the speed limit was not the cause?
There are many people who drive 3x whatever posted speed limit in whatever area.
The reason for the fatal crash was that the tires on the car were not able to handle providing sufficient grip at those speeds & in the condition where one of the rear tires lost what little traction it was offering when it became momentarily airborn due to a fixed plastic marker in the road
Speed was apart of the issue. Not the issue in and of itself.
