My brother lived in the Congo in the bush for two years when it was called Zaire. When he returned, he was even more quiet than usual. He went from 5'10" and 170 lbs, to 140 lbs. and almost died twice; once from amebic dysentery, and once from malaria. He's 6 years older than me and I was still a teen at that time, so he saw that I was trying to figure out how to deal with his PTSD, so he started teaching me Lingala and Mbaka. I have no idea how to spell those languages. He didn't want to teach me French, which was also spoken there, for some reason. I can say that my brother is definitely a genius. My dad was a member of MENSA but seemed moronic next to my brother. But unlike my father, my brother was always more mature than his contemporaries. But when he returned from Africa, it was as if he had emotionally aged another ten years. Whatever he saw, and he only gave me glimpses, changed him forever. Years later, when I asked him why he was so quiet and pensive after his return, he thought for a moment and said, "It took me a while to get used to people complaining about the most insignificant things. The people I lived with in the jungle had nothing. If they had shoes, that was very unusual. Before I left, I gave them everything I had. I realized that they needed those things so much more than I did." My brother, to this day, is my hero.

There was always scary political stuff going on in that region as well. He still doesn't talk about it. He only mentioned good things like sitting by a campfire in what he said was the darkest night you've ever seen be ause there wasn't any artificial light for miles. Suddenly, a rhino ran up from the bushes and started stomping out the fire. The people from Zaire he was with calmly, but quickly got out of the way and didn't seem phased. When the rhino was done and left. My brother asked what that was all about. They told him that rhinoceroses put out fires when they see them! I don't know if that's a belief they have or if it's really what rhino's do, but that night, that's exactly what that particular rhino did.🤣

This seriously hits home to me. I’ve been lost twice in the past three months because me and my brother bought some four wheelers. We got lost out in the mountains at midnight while it was freezing. We were only lost for about an hour and a half but it felt like forever. We got home with only a half gallon of gas left. We turned off the machines out there a couple of times to see that you couldn’t see your hand in front of your face. I know the feeling I thought that we were going to sleep out there and die frozen. It’s hard to describe the feeling and it turns my stomach to even think about it. And another time recently in the middle of the desert with no water made it out thankfully

I have explored more videos on David. That dude is amazing 👏. He's an inspiring artist, which I love to sketch myself and I'm very active in my retirement in playing several musical instruments. David exudes creativity and to live a full 'alive' life! Thank you Joe & David. My son turned me onto Joe's podcasts. Yes, I admit it. I can't get enough of Joe! The dinosaur 🦕 story had me laughing my ass off!

The amount of trauma experienced in the time he was there is unreal. Not sure what really happened that night with the stone. But a part of Dave was left in the Congo and a part of the Congo came back with him. Mad respect to a man that has lived to tell such a tale. I hope he has conquered whatever demons came back with him.

I did get lost in the rain forest once, while backpacking through Costa Rica, but that's as close as it gets! Saw some amazing wildlife while lost, too (including some kind of awesome black cat--eithetva panther or a black leopard, most likely!), but there were definitely no tribal chiefs involved!

That story is in the Vice episode: the Chief gave him alcohol and he got way too drunk (in an environment I wouldn't want to be buzzed). It's worth watching.
