  • These last weeks are mostly spent fighting an influenza, but before I get properly sick, I still manage to see many sights in central Romania. I visit Făgăraș Citadel, Viscri fortified church and the village of Viscri, Rupea Fortress, Emerald Lake and other geological points of interests, the cave monastery of Sinca Veche, and the cities of Brașov and Bucharest.
Before I get to Bucharest, I stay on a hilltop near Bran, where I can see Bran Castle (also known as Dracula’s Castle) in the distance. I have vast 360º views over two towns (incredible lights at night), as well as see sheep that pass my camp a few times a day. The shepherd seems most curious about me, and I will never forget the moment I wake up in the morning and find him looking though my window a few meters away.
The castle is such a tourist trap that I do not enjoy my time, but it’s a pretty, small castle. I don’t film anything inside, and I notice this happens in almost every place I visit now: I live in the moment and forget to film. Therefore this video feels a bit rushed, but let’s slow down the pace again in the next video!
But then the illness gets the better of me and I’m able to stay a week in AirBnBs in Bucharest recovering, thanks to my travel insurance. I still try to go see my surroundings a bit, and walk around the Palace of the Parliament, the second largest administrative building and one of the heaviest buildings in the world. The Old Town is eerily empty, but I hope it’s busy in the tourist season. I visit a few churches and just walk around as much as I am able. I study, watch Netflix and just live daily life. I wouldn’t normally enjoy living in a city, but it feels good here.
It’s been quite the month. I am no longer the same person as when I entered this country, and I’m glad of the person I am becoming. Romania has left a lasting mark on me, and I intend to come back here one day. This country is truly one of my homes now. How grateful I am to have been able to visit!
