I have a bit of MB problem on a few Hoya, and they keep coming back and even after alcohol spraying....now I've added the Dawn to the mix and hopefully it will work at keeping these bastards away from the rest of the collection! Good luck Harli, and thanks for the post!

This is what I do. I use alcohol and a q-tip. Clean the spots. Then change the soil and put it in a different pot. Keep it away from other plants. Put the old soil in the trash. You can wash the pot. Try it.

I also think that MB look cute!! 😁😍 Please try this with your hoya: clean it from the soil, shower the whole plant and spray it with neem oil/water or babyoil/water and then rinse the plant again. Then pot it in semi hydro self made PON or ready to use pon/LECA and wait. I think you can win!! 💚🌿

I used Captain Jacks on my Hindu Rope that was infested with Mealy bugs. I flipped the plant upside down in a bucket of the solution for 30 minutes, removed all soil and repotted. She is doing beautifully a year later. 💝💖💞🤗🤗🤗

I just found my first mealy bug ever after over 2 years of a large collection. It was on my newest addition orchid. I was absolutely terrified! And scared they would spread to all my plants. I literally un potted it, soaked it in a alcohol bath, and shook it in a bag of DE. Haven’t seen once since. 😅😅 far far away from others.

Do not give up, I get it! Step 1: spray with mealy bug pesticide , allow to dry. Step 2: run 50/50 hydrogen peroxide/ water mixture through soil, allow to thoroughly dry, maybe until the plant is dropping. Step 3: cover in DE (tips and bottoms of leaves, and top of soil) and allow to sit for the entire drying process .
The way I view it is if my plants are on their way out due to bugs, a severe treatment is necessary . Doing this process saved my entire plant room, minus two plants 😊 my miniature roses took the worst hit

Mealy's are so easy to see, anytime I saw them I'd shower the plant, and then if I saw a start up - hit them with a q-tip of alcohol and have never seen them again. Soooo, a friend of mine suggested unpot them and to use diluted rubbing alcohol to wash the plant. Also, added systemic granules when I planted them to a new soil mix. Someone also told me mealies love coco chips, my old media for succulents was coco coir and perlite. I think since it’s a “coco” that probably mealies keep attacking my succulents? But idk.

I have a problem and I was wondering if you have ever covered it, how do you deal with a thrip outbreak in your plants? 😭
32 weeks pregnant and just sick of dealing with pests this winter 🤣
Just threw out 2 larger "expendable " plants yesterday to get frozen on my frozen deck since i had replacements for them.
I've got about 65 upstairs plants and my husband just hates having to spray down my large plants that have thrips/ larva with insecticide, which we've done at least 4 times and I keep finding thrips after a week.
(He's so sweet, I just don't want to get too much exposure to insecticide being pregnant)

I would take a Rubbermaid tub container and fill the tub with warm water and work a peroxide ration to the amount of water gal. into the water. Ahead of time remove the Hoya from the pot and soil and then put the plant face down and submerge it completely in the mixed water for like 15 minutes or longer till the bugs die from the lack of air. I saw a outdoor gardener do this once on a rose bush or something. I'd look the water over for floating dead bodies then at that point I'd take it out and because its not in a pot I'd drown that how in Captain Jack Dead Bug Brew on the underside and then do the same to the topside of the leaves. Eggs have to be still active in that soil and I'd chuck it completely then spray the entire root system with a mix of water to peroxide again like I would do for root rot and repot it and give it 2 weeks in the spare bathroom and look that chic over again with a magnifying glass. I think completely submerging that chic is the only route to go to know EVERYTHING is dead.

Try earthworm castings, as a plant tea and as topdressing. They are a mild, gentle fertilizer that will never burn roots, but even better, they build up chitinase in your plants to create systemic protection against any sap-sucking pests, including mealybugs. Any that do feed on your plants die, but even better, insects and spider mites apparently sense the chitinase and avoid the plant.
DE is messy, especially indoors. Also, because its effectiveness comes from its jagged texture, which we can't feel but which slices up bugs, it is rendered completely ineffective whenever it is wet or damp, yet doesn't stay put when it's dry...I only ever use it anymore outdoors, as an ant barrier sometimes.

I would do a waterings with a hydrogen peroxide mix til mealies are gone. I had mealies (only a small handful) and once i got the visible ones out of the way, i watered with a 50/50 mix of water and hydrogen peroxide and they were gone. It wouldnt hurt to try if ya havent already, right?!

Hiiiiii 👋🏼 currently on my eighth month of trying to treat my ficus tineke of mealies. It’s a common plant and I should just toss it, but it’s a gigantic tree now with four separate stems so I can’t part with it. But it infuriates me every time I look at it.
