    I will agree with the comments in this video 100%.
    My beagle is 2 years old, and when he catches the scent of some animal, he goes into tracking mode.
    If it wasn't for the leash, he would run for hours, and you would never see him again.
    As the saying goes, he goes "nose blind", where he no longer hears your commands.

      My Beagle now 8 months old and i could say proudly she could walk off leash! 😍 I know this might be different for each Beagle's personality, but mine is so eager to please - she's such a people pleaser. Its just as easy as let her know that i'm her provider, her friend, her leader, her guardian by always let her sniffing around while walking on leash, always playing and training, and boosted her mental stimulation by giving her many sniffing games. Even when she's in the middle on playing with her Akita bestfriend or in the middle of sniffing around, she always comes to my side when i called her and when i said lets go home she will begin to walk to my house's direction - or to my car's parking location immediatelly 🥰

    I had my beagle rescue from the day he was born which I think helps with the bond he has with our family. But We also stuck with whistle training & he will always return with our whistle blow. We never let him off leash unless it is a fenced park or if it is our friend's 5 acre farm.
    He is really good with sticking close & checking in. I am would like to think we could trust him off all the time, but he is a beagle & it is not worth the risk!

    We have a 20 month old female beagle. She is a absolute joy. She was a runner. We had to chase her many time. For our sanity and the well-being of Daisy, I purchased a free spirit dog collar. To start with we already had a good training foundation. Sit, stay, come, speak and some leash training. She does not like the harness! First we trained her on the boundaries of our front yard with the shock collar set to a low level. Then short walks with a leash. Heal sit stay. Always sitting before crossing street. All the while learning the boundaries of the side walk. Now she is completely off the leash. Now when the free spirit collar comes out she is ready to go and we never leave home without it. She is one happy well behaved Beagle. She gets a lot of praise from the neighborhood. Because she is a beagle she needs an occasional reminder to listen to commands and the collar is what keeps her safe. I take a head lamp, fanny pack withe a leash poop bags extra batteries and my phone.

    My Beagle was trained at the beginning with a leash of 30m and with his preferred and heavily smelling goodies and so step by step he learned to follow also on long distances to come back on call. Of course for 95% the rest of that is still risky especially in winter time on snow when he finds a rathe new track than from time to time he run away but after some minuts of running arround headless he always come back. He loves me :D Inside the city I never can go off leash. Thanks for your great channel. Take care and go ahead.

      Strengthen your bond. Let him know you are his provider, his leader, his friend, his protector. One time my Beagle indeed run away when she spotted a stray cat when she's 3 or 4 months old (she always wants to be friend with a cat 😅), i chased her and fortunatelly she wasn't go so far. Since then i changed my method - i've never again chasing her and i let her know how important "me and my house" for her (by always consistent let her walking and sniffing (let her do whatever she wants - even when she wants to approaching some stray cats), playing more fun than all of her dog's friends and training, also providing lot of mind sniffing games). I just let her know that she's free to be her happy-self if she follows my rules. My Beagle is 8 months old now and she could walking off leash even with so many distractions (stray cats, kids, people) and she always running back to my side whenever i called her.

    When our Beagle was still young she wandered off, but now she is 12 years, she always walks off the leash whenever it save to do so, and listens and obey commands and even handsigns, but it took really a few years before she responded, it really took alot of trust and bonding i tend to believe.
    But when she smell food, all bets are off and she raises her tail to me, like a human does his middle vinger ;-)

    Many experts had said that actually Beagle is one kind of dog that so eager to please people. This is true because its all depends on how strong the bond that you have with them and what's your meaning for them. I let my Beagle leaned that _she needs me_ because i'm the only one her provider, her protector, her energetic playing friend more than all of her dog's friends and also her leader. That's why when other people said the teenage dog will never listening you, my 8 (almost 9 months old) Beagle always listening to me and always comes back to my side whenever i called her. One important fact this video fails to mention is that the sooner you let your beagle pup off the leash the better. I started taking mine on mini walks in the countryside (3 months old) and I would train recall with him. When dogs are still young their sphere of independence is pretty centered around its owner. And as the dog grows, that sphere expands and dogs tend to be more independent. Recall training is important and yes it's a tough challenge but It is possible

    • @autumntaco8722
      @autumntaco8722 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is one of the many things I wish I'd known raising my dogs. There's a mutual trust that's a lot easier to built when they're young versus when they're older! Doing activities where you're the leader is so important and no one ever talks about it when it comes to raising a pup.

    • @greenAbbot
      @greenAbbot 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well, my experience is just the opposite. My beagle is so used to being very close that when I started letting her off the leash at age 4, she never wanted to stray far and it was pretty much effortless. All the rules about recall training and not doing it in cities (or near any roads, IMO) still apply, of course.

    Actually, I think it is possible to off-leash a beagle or any breed. Beagles although are scent dogs are easily trained to do everything that any other breed is capable of doing. Including walking off-leash. I've done it with all my beagles. The reason experts say that it is hard to train beagles to walk off-leash is that they don't teach you the basics of walking a beagle which I explain in this video. th-cam.com/video/N5CzYl_xG0k/w-d-xo.html

    There's very little circumstances in which my boy is let off leash. If there are other dogs off leash, and the activities are mainly outdoors, then I'll let him off. As long as there is noise he can orient towards as he's sniffing, I feel better, and he usually wants to check out what everyone's doing, and usually if there's other dogs, he's more interested in play than tracking. Regardless, he very rarely gets off leash outdoors. I love him, but that nose can get him into trouble. For the most part, I'd rather be safe than sorry.

      He is growing fast, he needs as much nutrients as possible. Giving him treats can fill his stomach. Instead of using treats, use kibbles from his dog food for training.

    Beagles are awesome! I love my beagle. But, when it comes to a walk, she has to go hunting, every single time. I cannot let her into the front yard without her going hunting. I walk her off leash, in a city park and with a shock collar that she is trained to respond to. So in essence, she is not really off leash because of the shock collar. And she is stubborn. She can ignore surprisingly high levels of electric shock sometimes. Surely more than I could ignore. However, she runs down pheasants for me when I go hunting. Best dog ever!

  • @brianwhiting3280

    Just be careful. It looks like sometimes he's in a halter and sometimes has a leash around his neck. Beagles are very prone to neck and back problems and should NEVER be on just a leash connected to his collar around his neck.

    • @BeagleCare
      @BeagleCare  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah. We put him in halter most of the time. However, we live in a city with heavy traffic and our Groot sometime gets really excited if he catches a new smell. And he has escaped from a halter before, so we keep him in collar when we on the streets.

      Just walk him around a big open area -- with his leash on! Let him have his head sometimes. And distract him with treats sometimes. He'll eventually learn to like
      walking with you, even with the leash on. Just start by going somewhere where there aren't other dogs and people around, until he gets the hang of it.

      He would gain weight if I did not limit his feeding.
      I feed him twice a day, and no snacks! His weight is stable.
      The other thing is, he needs exercise -- a lot of exercise.
      I walk him twice a day for 30 minutes each.

    First and foremost, beagles are dogs. My Beagle who lives with me in a city enjoys walking off the leash. She will trail behind to "sniff" but will catch up and do the thing over again. New dogs and noisy trucks are no problem I just call her if the meeting with another dog gets longer she will come around no matter what.

    • @BeagleCare
      @BeagleCare  ปีที่แล้ว

    • @BeagleBabyBeastie
      @BeagleBabyBeastie 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My vet told me to brush my beag's teeth every day, or if not, as frequently as possible (several times a week). Gum infections, if left untreated, can possibly spread and become much more serious to your dog's health.
      Dog dental cleanings at the vet can also be expensive (in part because of needing anesthesia), so brushing your dog's teeth as often as possible (and as best you can) can help buy you some time before having to take him in for the procedure.

    Beagles are all about their noses. Humans, on the other end of the olfactory spectrum ... well, not so much. So if you can think like a beagle, that will go a long way towards managing them. Beagles off their leash? Not such a great idea in a populated area.

  • @dudleygoodwin4902
    @dudleygoodwin4902 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I wouldn't trust my beagle off of a leash, I know too many experience hunters who have very expensive beagles who have lost them hunting. They find a scent and follow it ( these are well trained beagles) they get too far out tracking a rabbit and lose their way back. Besides mine is too precious to lose, I just don't want to risk it!!!!

    • @BeagleCare

      Beagles were breed to be hunting dogs. It's easy to train a beagle to follow scent and chase small animals in the wild. Chasing and find the source of scent satisfies their instincts.
