Good tutorial Robin! I like using bowl cozies but I don’t put them in the microwave either. And yes I’d give myself permission to have a separate seam to close the opening. It’s too exhausting trying to do things “correctly” all of the time! Have a great weekend! 🌷🌷🌷🌷
Hi Robin, thank you for your easy to follow directions to make any size bowl cozy! I tend to be a bit (or a lot) OCD but I’m going to try to give myself permission to make things a bit faster and possibly easier for me! Have a very Happy Easter!🐣🐰
It can be hard to let some things go. I had that problem when I was sewing stuffies. Then one day I was looking at stuffies at Walmart and I looked at how they closed the turning and stuffing hole. They just whip stitched It. 🤷♀️. I’ve looked at store bought clothing and realized they weren’t perfect either. Now I do my best to improve with each project and I don’t stress over It. No worries though. I still have another 100 things to stress over. 🤣🤣🤣 #robinperfect 😉
Hi Robin great tutorial, I personally would hand stich the opening as it is so small, but but but I will give myself permission to sew it like you said. ❤love your videos. Happy Easter. 😊
Thanks. Hand stitching is always an option but maybe not for me. I’ve never been able to get my ladder stitch to look neat. Plus if you have to make a couple dozen for gifts you might change your mind after the sixth bowl cozy 🤔🧵
Another well explained tutorial. This is not something I would use, but I'm going to give myself permission to make at least one, just so I know how the process works. I love seeing all your colourful ones for inspiration. Hope you have a good weekend,
I made these for all my family members a few Christmases ago. I still make them for craft fairs and friends. Great job on walking us through the process!!
I have always wondered how to make bowl cozies and never really done any research. I received one as a gift few years back and I loved it. Your tutorial is very easy and clear to follow as always😊
Hi Robin: Great tutorial! I can actually make one without looking at the video again. That’s how good your tips and instructions are. Thank you for sharing. 💜😎🇺🇸
Thanks for this video. I definitely give myself permission to use tips to make sewing projects easier, especially if it means avoiding handstitching that isn't absolutely necessary. Just the other day, I noticed that a couple of our bowl cozies have gone missing. It is probably time for me to make a few. I don’t use our bowl cozies when cooking or heating in the microwave. However, after the food in the bowl is finished heating in the microwave, I will sometimes slide the bowl in the microwave to one side so that I can put the cozie next to the bowl. Then I can lift bowl into the cozie so I can take the bowl out using the cozie.
I am definitely going to be making some bowl cozies! And I will give myself permission to use a Crumb block But that means I need to make a brand new one so that I know that the thread is all cotton! Thank you so much for this. I have resisted making them for some reason but I have the ubiquitous Correle bowls as well as some deeper ones.
Thank you for your tutorial! I haven’t made any yet but I plan to. I also want to make the one for the pint ice cream containers. I will give my self permission to do the 1/8” seam allowance for closing.
What do you think of using bowl cozies as potholders? You could fold them in half to increase their protection. Storage is a problem in my kitchen so if I can hang them up and make them a dual use it would help.
Again a great tutorial, thanks. What do you think about using a double needle for top stitches. I give myself permission to buy bowl cozies instead of make them. I hate to make darts!!!
Thanks! I don’t blame you. I always ask myself why are the things we least enjoy sewing the ones that are the most popular? A double needle would give them a nice finished look. The outer most needle might struggle going through the thickness near the edge of the cozy. 🤔
Great tutorial! Can you help me understand where the 2 1/2” comes from for the dart? Is it just the standard measurement used? I feel like I missed something from where you placed the bowl on the batting and made the mark and then marked 2 1/2”. What is the purpose of putting the bowl on the batting and making a mark? Thanks for the help!
I’m so sorry. It looks like that part of the video was deleted during editing. I was recuperating from being sick after moving from Florida to Arizona. You mark the bowl in the center of the batting and place the bottom of the dart 1/2” away from that outer bottom bowl marking. That allows the bowl cozie to hug your bowl better. The dart depth is determined by your bowl and the width should be the same for any size bowl. Most bowls are about the same size across the bottom so a standard size is used by most makers. I hope that helps.
Thanks so much! Super newbie to making cozies and understanding darts. You mention the width size being the same on most bowls. Is the width represented by the 1” marking up from the gold and the depth is the other marking along the fold from the edge?
@ You’re very welcome. Yes. The set width is along the outer edge of the batting and the depth goes from the edge to the center markings. Not that those are their official names just how I refer to them 😉
The robot fabric was sent to me from a viewer. I happen to see It when I was out fabric shopping several months ago but I couldn’t say if It was Joann’s or Hobby Lobby. Sorry I couldn’t be very helpful.
I'm going to give myself permission too... Great idea with the small stitching line. Maybe if I was selling them I would add the top stitching. I am like you and never put my cozies in the microwave. Thanks for the tutorial.
I don’t see why not. Some parts might be a bit more difficult to hand sew. You’ll hand sew the opening closed but the last bit of top stitching might be a bit harder to hand sew. You can skip that part though. People have been hand sewing for 100’s of years and they made some amazing things.
I don't think I have ever made bowl cozies...I may have made one when they were first new. I feel like I remember making the darts. For one thing, I did not have room to store them. I always grabbed a pot holder to set a hot bowl on and carry it to where ever I am going to eat. I give myself permission for a lot of things...
if the extra line bothers you it can be closed by hand using a ladder stitch then top stitch by machine it will not bother me having the extra stitch haha
I try to make sure all the steps are covered. I want to make sure that everyone who’s new to sewing can follow along. Quick five minute videos aren’t usually suited for beginners.
After much effort and topological consideration, I have determined that if you assemble one of these entirely inside out, it is impossible to turn it right side out. 😂 But if you do sew one together inside out, it becomes a nice dog toy when you try to turn it right side out. 🎉
Next time I make some I want to try cutting the batting smaller than the cotton fabric. See if that helps. The turning area is so small that It makes It very difficult to turn. I haven’t tried leaving a larger turn area. I’m not sure if that would be harder to sew up the turn space. 🤷♀️

You are only to cook in microwave for 2 minutes at a time that is plenty of time for reheating

Happy Easter 🐣
Great directions for odd sized bowls! Thanks.
Thanks! Bowl cozies make great gifts and thankfully they’re fast to sew.

We use ours all the time
Thank you Robin, this is exactly what I need right now.
I’m glad it’s helpful. ✂️
I made these for all my family members a few Christmases ago. I still make them for craft fairs and friends. Great job on walking us through the process!!
Thank you! They are popular. It helps that they do get stained over time so people want to purchase new ones. Plus who can resist fun fabrics?
I have always wondered how to make bowl cozies and never really done any research. I received one as a gift few years back and I loved it. Your tutorial is very easy and clear to follow as always😊
Thank you so much. I use my bowl cozy often. Like tonight for my super simple oatmeal supper. 🥣
Hi Robin:
Great tutorial! I can actually make one without looking at the video again. That’s how good your tips and instructions are. Thank you for sharing. 💜😎🇺🇸
Glad it was helpful! I like that I can figure out the numbers based on the bowl. Otherwise I used to rewatch my videos for the dart measurements. ✂️

Kitchen items just seem to disappear don’t they? I only have the one bowl cozy and I’m a bit tired of seeing the robots 🤣

Those correlle bowls are everywhere. Can you make just one or two crumb blocks? I always end up with at least 10 crumb blocks when I work on them 🤣
Thank you for your tutorial! I haven’t made any yet but I plan to. I also want to make the one for the pint ice cream containers. I will give my self permission to do the 1/8” seam allowance for closing.
You’re very welcome. The ice cream cozy is very helpful when eating right from the container. Because what other way is there? 🤣
@@rsislandcrafts exactly!
I love your choice of fabrics.🥰
Thanks! Fat quarters are great for bowl cozies.
Such great easy to follow instructions. Thanks! ❤
Glad it was helpful!
I love that fabric 🪡🧵🤗
Thank you for the class
You are welcome! Happy Sewing!
Do you wash the fat quarters before cutting?
I do not prewash my fabrics but some people do. It’s personal preference.
Thank you Robin Sincerely Your Friend Lynne

Wal-Mart also sells the batting $4.97 a package.

I would love to know where you purchased the robot material, both of my boys are in robotics, and that would be a great cozy to make for them.❤
The robot fabric was sent to me from a viewer. I happen to see It when I was out fabric shopping several months ago but I couldn’t say if It was Joann’s or Hobby Lobby. Sorry I couldn’t be very helpful.
What would you think about zigzagging all the way around? Is that an option? Thanks for sharing.
You can give It a try. See if it’s too bulky for a special stitch. I like to try different ideas to see how they work or don’t work.
I'm going to give myself permission too... Great idea with the small stitching line. Maybe if I was selling them I would add the top stitching. I am like you and never put my cozies in the microwave. Thanks for the tutorial.
It’s funny how we don’t worry as much when it’s just for us. I actually like It without the top stitching. It looks fine to me. 🤷♀️
What size do you make if you’re giving one as a gift?
I would go with the size in this video. It’s what I use for my shop. Unless you can be sneaky and measure their bowls 😉.
How did you determine the size of the darts?
I show in the video how to determine the darts based on your bowl size. I start talking about It around the 10:34 mark.
@@rsislandcrafts Thank you! I don't know how I missed that the first time I watched. Great video.
@@Jennifer53267 You’re very welcome. I miss bits of videos all of the time. It can be frustrating some times. Happy sewing!! 🪡

I use potholders for my plates all of the time. It’s just me and one bowl cozy so it’s easy to store. I do tend to have several potholders though.
Wrap n zap is $4.99 at Hobby Lobby
Thank you for letting us know.
if the extra line bothers you it can be closed by hand using a ladder stitch then top stitch by machine it will not bother me having the extra stitch haha
For me, the extra line of machine stitching would be much neater and less noticeable than my poorly sewn ladder stitch 🙃
I have broke needles.
Bowl cozies are crazy to sew.
I also don't microwave mine
It just makes sense to me. Plus I don’t have to worry about causing a fire.
