      If you have OCD (compulsions and/or intrusive thoughts), do the following practice and your compulsions and intrusive thoughts WILL 100% get better and most likely even completely vanish if you apply this advice for long enough, you have to do this if you want to get better, there is no way around it:
      Meditate daily, ideally 30-60+ minutes, but you can start with 5+ minutes and work your way up. I recommend Vipassana meditation, which simply means putting your attention on the bodily sensations of breathing.
      Meditation is essentially about one thing: Practicing Awareness. Sitting meditation is an intentional, focused practice of Awareness, but it's just the beginning. You also have to practice Awareness when you are not sitting down to meditate. You basically have to meditate/practice Awareness 24/7, no matter what you are doing, no matter how many thoughts come up and no matter how much you suffer mentally and physically.
      Practicing Awareness means simply observing your thoughts and compulsions (and also emotions, sensory perceptions, bodily sensations, pain etc., basically everything you experience) in a distanced and detached way. You have to realize that you ARE the observer/the Awareness that is free from all experience. YOU ARE NOT YOUR THOUGHTS AND COMPULSIONS. You are free from your thoughts, your thoughts just fool you into believing that they are real. Thoughts are just randomly generated bullshit, don't ever worry about them and don't ever think they are more than that. Never believe ANY thoughts. Do not identify with your thoughts and simply observe them from a distance. Your OCD will try to come up with all kinds of sneaky shit to draw you back into it, but NEVER give in to it, no matter what it says. Examples of sly tricks of OCD would be thoughts like "Meditation/Awareness doesn't work", "Your OCD will never go away" etc., but all these tricks only work because you let yourself get fooled by them, because you believe in them. You willingly give your power to these meaningless thoughts so that they can destroy you with it. See the absurdity in that. Also, never try to argue with thoughts, correct them, fight them, get rid of them etc., all of that is more tricks of OCD. You cannot solve OCD inside of the mind, only by stepping outside of the mind and observing it (Awareness). Intrusive thoughts and compulsions are randomly generated and you have absolutely no control over them whatsoever, but you have the power of being able to simply observe them, which will make you realize that you are not these thoughts, which will make them go away if you do it long enough. They only keep coming if they keep getting negative reactions from you. Fully accept and welcome all thoughts, no matter how strange or disturbing they may be. Never resist thoughts. Thoughts have no power over you as long as you don't give it to them. Never feel ashamed, disgusted or shocked by your thoughts, this fuels intrusive thoughts and compulsions immensely. Compulsions and intrusive thoughts thrive on your negative reactions to them. Simply observe them without being irritated by them.
      OCD is threatened by Meditation/Awareness, that's why it will try to keep you from practicing them. When you practice Meditation/Awareness, your OCD might try to draw you back into its grasp through anxiety and anxious reactions in the body: tension, racing heart, sweating, stomach/heart pain etc., don't identify with these uncomfortable bodily sensations either and also observe all of this in a detached way.       Also, as corny as it may sound, what's even more important than Meditation and constantly practicing Awareness is fully and unconditionally loving yourself and everybody else and everything else in the world, even the most evil shit you can imagine, even your intrusive thoughts and compulsions. Your world and life have to become completely filled with Love. Negativity and suffering can only thrive where there is a lack of Love. Love repels negativity and suffering like oil repels water.
      You WILL get through this if you follow my advice consequently for a long enough time, please trust me for your own sake.

      A thousand times yes. 1 in 100 people are estimated to have Pure O, and I reckon that statistic is significantly lower than what it should be because Pure O is criminally underdiagnosed due to misdiagnosis and people feeling too ashamed of their thoughts to seek help. 58,000 people watched this video, which means that *at least* 580 people have just found out what is wrong with them. That is 580 people who will now have access to a diagnosis and the clarity, community, treatment, resources, education and so much more that comes along with it. 580 people who will live a little easier knowing that there is hope. 580 people who feel represented. 580 people who might seek therapy. And, because unfortunately those with OCD are 10 times more likely to off themselves then the general population, 580 people who might choose to live another day; 580 families who will keep their loved one. 580 people who might help to spread awareness of the condition themselves, like a game of infection tag as a child where those who are tagged tag other people, who tag others, who tag others. Bless anyone who works to spread awareness about Pure O.

Ive never been diagnosed but there came a point where there was no explanation why I had to do all these things and why it took up so much of my time.     This is a pretty difficult condition to live with it's weird because everything is internal and it's exhausting sometimes. It's almost like having a little monster control your thoughts.

    Just to clarify for everyone, Pure O DOES involve compulsions. The compulsions are just mental instead of physical. Because the obsessions and compulsions are both thought-based, it can feel like you're just constantly obsessing.

      ​@@jamesjohnstone1224 Yes you can. The same methods apply to mental compulsions as physical compulsions. Refrain from engaging in the thoughts, do not perform the compulsions that you feel you need to do to feel safe, and accept everything you feel and accept the fear of not doing the compulsion. This with practice teaches the brain that it's not a real danger that warrants a fear reaction

    I think lots of us relate to the moment we first found out about Pure O. If only it was talked about more & people were educated more on mental health in school - people wouldn’t have to feel alone or scared sick about what’s happening in their head - it’s the worst feeling

      YES! People say not to self-diagnose, but the moment I found out about Pure O was so amazing. It wasn't like, oh my gosh, I'm sooo OCD because I like to organize my colored pencils in rainbow order. It was like, no one ever talked about anything remotely similar to what I was feeling. And then, after 1 1/2 years from the time of onset (which is unfortunately an extremely short amount of time compared to other sufferers), I heard about Pure O and it was such a moment of clarity, like I didn't need to keep searching anymore. I just knew what I had.

      It’s true how much of a difference it really is to finally find out it’s a mental illness and that you aren’t some kind of pervert or evil person. Luckily my mother is the one who researched what it was and told me because I was sleeping my days away because when I slept I wouldn’t have to deal with the thoughts.

    I have so much respect for George, he didn’t need to be open about his personal mental health issues but the fact that he has is just so inspiring. He’s such a talented, genuine and lovely guy that I hope he finds peace with this illness and manages to deal with it daily without being reminded of it. The love I have for him is something else, what a man 💛

    It’s crazy because before even being diagnosed with pure O I loved listening to George Ezra, then after experiencing my lowest low and almost not making it back from it I found an article with him sharing his experience with it. I was shook to say the least, knowing an artist I jam to endures the same shit and I didn’t even know it.

    I'm in my 60s now and I had this for about 3 years from 16 to 19. For me it went back in its box when I got away from home and went to uni. I was so busy, so happy, that I started to forget. It never came back. Not everyone can have such a major life saving change I know. Years later, I heard about a Zen exercise. It's simple, "go away - and don't think about the tiger". Everyone thinks about the tiger ... I can see how TM puts the tiger back in its cage. A brave broadcast.

    Great respect for everybody who's opening up like this! ❤️❤️❤️ This is a topic that should be discussed a lot more in public. It would stop the feeling of guilt and shame, each OCD sufferer has.

      I suffer from pure ocd myself. I didn't realise until my 20s that what I had was intrusive thoughts. CBT has really helped me though :) hope it gets more awareness x

      @@robertnettleship5467 I feel like I got kind of lucky, I have ocd, mine mostly occurs in my thought process. It's always intrusive but I went to CBT since I was 12. I'm 17 now, its helped a lot.

      @@Eden68161 I hope by CBT, you both mean ERP (Exposure and Response Prevention Therapy). Regular CBT usually makes OCD worse, not better, because it provides reassurance and encourages mental compulsions like thought suppression and thought neutralization.

    His story of OCD could have come from my own mouth. The fear of telling someone about those thoughts is so great, it makes things worse. The graphic thoughts that keep repeating, and the social anxiety it creates. The depression it brings. The manic highs. The battle against self medication using alcohol and drugs to numb the mind. Tourettes in the form of physical and verbal ticks that i battle with myself to stop when they aggressively take hold. And the exhaustion, that's real killer. Every single day feeling like a whole week. It became so bad my mind reacted by going into fight or fight mode. For seven long years, from dawn till dusk, my senses were overloaded, I had vertigo continuously, became depersonalised from the world. My marriage ended. And yet, the day you have that moment of knowing you're not alone changes everything, it's amazing. But then came years of therapy and, as a last resort, medication, trying to put the pieces together about why my mind behaves this way. Trying to accept it's not going away yet unable to accept why it's even there. I was eventually diagnosed with Complex PTSD. My existence alone in my adult mind was a product of a lonely, loveless, bullied childhood. And while I am much better now, just a little stress triggers my mind into overdrive and I'm back again. I don't think I'll ever be in a relationship again, that's the pay off for living a life where getting through each day doesn't end with me not wanting to wake up. I'm happier and more settled than I've ever been though, and I'm grateful for that. And grateful I could write that down on a public post.

    i really enjoyed george’s dialog on pure o. i’ve been in treatment for the last 8 months for pure o and meditation has helped me a ton. for me as well engaging with/producing art, self-love affirmations, and journaling have also been a huge help!

      @@Bigdogstusks I took SSRI's. for me I didn't feel good until I understood myself. which came from intense introspecition and self love. SSRI's helped but wasn't the fix. I wish you luck in you journey :)

    If you have OCD (compulsions and/or intrusive thoughts), do the following practice and your compulsions and intrusive thoughts WILL 100% get better and most likely even completely vanish if you apply this advice for long enough, you have to do this if you want to get better, there is no way around it:
    Meditate daily, ideally 30-60+ minutes, but you can start with 5+ minutes and work your way up. I recommend Vipassana meditation, which simply means putting your attention on the bodily sensations of breathing.
    Meditation is essentially about one thing: Practicing Awareness. Sitting meditation is an intentional, focused practice of Awareness, but it's just the beginning. You also have to practice Awareness when you are not sitting down to meditate. You basically have to meditate/practice Awareness 24/7, no matter what you are doing, no matter how many thoughts come up and no matter how much you suffer mentally and physically.
    Practicing Awareness means simply observing your thoughts and compulsions (and also emotions, sensory perceptions, bodily sensations, pain etc., basically everything you experience) in a distanced and detached way. You have to realize that you ARE the observer/the Awareness that is free from all experience. YOU ARE NOT YOUR THOUGHTS AND COMPULSIONS. You are free from your thoughts, your thoughts just fool you into believing that they are real. Thoughts are just randomly generated bullshit, don't ever worry about them and don't ever think they are more than that. Never believe ANY thoughts. Do not identify with your thoughts and simply observe them from a distance. Your OCD will try to come up with all kinds of sneaky shit to draw you back into it, but NEVER give in to it, no matter what it says. Examples of sly tricks of OCD would be thoughts like "Meditation/Awareness doesn't work", "Your OCD will never go away" etc., but all these tricks only work because you let yourself get fooled by them, because you believe in them. You willingly give your power to these meaningless thoughts so that they can destroy you with it. See the absurdity in that. Also, never try to argue with thoughts, correct them, fight them, get rid of them etc., all of that is more tricks of OCD. You cannot solve OCD inside of the mind, only by stepping outside of the mind and observing it (Awareness). Intrusive thoughts and compulsions are randomly generated and you have absolutely no control over them whatsoever, but you have the power of being able to simply observe them, which will make you realize that you are not these thoughts, which will make them go away if you do it long enough. They only keep coming if they keep getting negative reactions from you. Fully accept and welcome all thoughts, no matter how strange or disturbing they may be. Never resist thoughts. Thoughts have no power over you as long as you don't give it to them. Never feel ashamed, disgusted or shocked by your thoughts, this fuels intrusive thoughts and compulsions immensely. Compulsions and intrusive thoughts thrive on your negative reactions to them. Simply observe them without being irritated by them.

    Also, as corny as it may sound, what's even more important than Meditation and constantly practicing Awareness is fully and unconditionally loving yourself and everybody else and everything else in the world, even the most evil shit you can imagine, even your intrusive thoughts and compulsions. Your world and life have to become completely filled with Love. Negativity and suffering can only thrive where there is a lack of Love. Love repels negativity and suffering like oil repels water.
    You WILL get through this if you follow my advice consequently for a long enough time, please trust me for your own sake.

      As a person who was currently completely stuck in my own thoughts, I found this video randomly by looking up stuff about Ezra.       I would like to add the idea that the part of the personality that comes up with the OCD thinking really isn’t bad or evil, it thinks that being vigilant to these worst case scenarios/ideas will help prevent bad stuff happening, but it happens to be so completely off the mark, so wrong in every single way, it’s an inevitable downward spiral, so you do everything this lovely soul recommends in these comments. That is, detach and be the observer. The true self, the wiser self - who you really are, and have always been. The other parts came about in response to earlier adversities experienced when younger. It’s not useful to judge these parts, which are weirdly enough just trying to help- this judgemental attitude only creates internal conflict and stress, and self judgement, which feeds the spiralling downwards. Accepting that the intention of this part is not bad, but so very misguided and strategically destructive, breaks the downward spiralling. We need to be calm and wise, and take leadership from this position of true self, as we would with a struggling and desperate child, or younger person taking a wrong path, and help them find a helpful path. It really is an attitude of kindness and love, self love, for all the parts that is the ultimate answer. I find this in meditation and mindfulness, as well as gratitude etc. Mantra is great. Chanting is my godsend (Krishna Das is a New Yorker with beautiful music and his own amazing journey). These ideas about the Self are from Internal Family Systems Therapy (Dr Richard Schwartz). He has written a book No Bad Parts. I hope this makes sense, and is helpful for someone. I love this thread! Thank you George for opening up this conversation. Very best to you all 🥰

    Only just seen this.. thank you to George for being so open. It is incredibly helpful when celebrities do this and help crush the stigma that has been associated with mental health by confirming that mental health disorders are mere health conditions that are nothing at all to be ashamed of. I am sure we are actually in the majority rather than minority, if we asked every person in the UK. I too have OCD (contamination based) and the more we are able to open up and educate, the faster people will realise that there is no way it should be any more of a taboo subject than any physical, such as having a heart condition or a broken leg. I truly hope that I will see mental health being treated on a par with physical health within my lifetime. xx

    I started getting those thoughts after going to study music production about a year ago, and hanging around with people who had "given up" on life. i slowly started to feel depressed, and more and more weird annoying thoughts started piling into my head until, as george said "whats the worse thing that I could think": but its more like a feeling i get before the thoughts come in, but tbh I'm over it, a lot of the thoughts can be pretty funny in a dark humoured sense but when they started to come it was really scary.

Examples of sly tricks of OCD would be thoughts like "Meditation/Awareness doesn't work", "Your OCD will never go away" etc., but all these tricks only work because you let yourself get fooled by them, because you believe in them. You willingly give your power to these meaningless thoughts so that they can destroy you with it. See the absurdity in that. Also, never try to argue with thoughts, correct them, fight them, get rid of them etc., all of that is more tricks of OCD. You cannot solve OCD inside of the mind, only by stepping outside of the mind and observing it (Awareness). Intrusive thoughts and compulsions are randomly generated and you have absolutely no control over them whatsoever, but you have the power of being able to simply observe them, which will make you realize that you are not these thoughts, which will make them go away if you do it long enough. They only keep coming if they keep getting negative reactions from you. Fully accept and welcome all thoughts, no matter how strange or disturbing they may be. Never resist thoughts. Thoughts have no power over you as long as you don't give it to them. Never feel ashamed, disgusted or shocked by your thoughts, this fuels intrusive thoughts and compulsions immensely. Compulsions and intrusive thoughts thrive on your negative reactions to them. Simply observe them without being irritated by them.
      OCD is threatened by Meditation/Awareness, that's why it will try to keep you from practicing them. When you practice Meditation/Awareness, your OCD might try to draw you back into its grasp through anxiety and anxious reactions in the body: tension, racing heart, sweating, stomach/heart pain etc., don't identify with these uncomfortable bodily sensations either and also observe all of this in a detached way. It's all just the OCD trying to trick you and ruin your life. The fact that your OCD will try to keep you from meditating/practicing Awareness should be a clear signal to you that you are on the right path to overcoming it.
      Meditating and constantly practicing Awareness might be very hard at first, but don't be discouraged, it will become easier and easier with time, and your OCD and all its symptoms will gradually become better. Even if thoughts still come up, they will not bother you anymore, you will just see them for the random bullshit that they are. The end goal would be to remain in Awareness 24/7, which would make you completely invulnerable to all compulsions and intrusive thoughts.
      Also, as corny as it may sound, what's even more important than Meditation and constantly practicing Awareness is fully and unconditionally loving yourself and everybody else and everything else in the world, even the most evil shit you can imagine, even your intrusive thoughts and compulsions. Your world and life have to become completely filled with Love. Negativity and suffering can only thrive where there is a lack of Love. Love repels negativity and suffering like oil repels water.
      You WILL get through this if you follow my advice consequently for a long enough time, please trust me for your own sake.

    this name "pure o" is kinda simplistic because you still get compulsions, just mental ones, like imagining things that in your mind are "neutralizing" whatever your intrusive thoughts are about. But he was right - obsessions and intrusive thoughts without physical compulsions.

    One of my favourite mantras is: I can afford to not worry about anything for the next 3 hrs. 20 minutes out of that I will spend here.
    If you aim at 20 minutes, the spectre of needing to tense -up-to-cope-with-a-mad-world looms too close

    My family is an example of the genetic component of OCD. My sister and I, my father, his mother and including 5 of her siblings. Terrible outcomes 3 suicides, 2 spent much time in mental hospitals. (a Mennonite family). My OCD is internalized to such an extent that I often lose time when I'm immersed in some rumination. It's terribly disturbing not being present to others who are around you.

    I think I had this. Thank god I knew about Jung's concept of the shadow. I was more able to accept what I now see to be Pure O symptoms. I imagine it would have been rather different if I'd grown up more believing in the idea of some thoughts being sinful

      Because GAD and OCD are different disorders. GAD is more common than OCD, with estimates that 1 in 3 people have it. OCD is thought to be present in 1 in 40 adults, and the subset of OCD that George (and I) have, called Pure O, is even rarer at 1 in 100 by some estimates. The main difference between the disorders is that those with OCD feel they have to perform physical or mental behaviors to rid themselves of the anxiety their intrusive thoughts cause, while those with GAD don't do this. These behaviors are also called compulsions, which is the C in OCD.

Thoughts are just randomly generated bullshit, don't ever worry about them and don't ever think they are more than that. Never believe ANY thoughts. Do not identify with your thoughts and simply observe them from a distance. Your OCD will try to come up with all kinds of sneaky shit to draw you back into it, but NEVER give in to it, no matter what it says. Examples of sly tricks of OCD would be thoughts like "Meditation/Awareness doesn't work", "Your OCD will never go away" etc., but all these tricks only work because you let yourself get fooled by them, because you believe in them. You willingly give your power to these meaningless thoughts so that they can destroy you with it. See the absurdity in that. Also, never try to argue with thoughts, correct them, fight them, get rid of them etc., all of that is more tricks of OCD. You cannot solve OCD inside of the mind, only by stepping outside of the mind and observing it (Awareness). Intrusive thoughts and compulsions are randomly generated and you have absolutely no control over them whatsoever, but you have the power of being able to simply observe them, which will make you realize that you are not these thoughts, which will make them go away if you do it long enough. They only keep coming if they keep getting negative reactions from you. Fully accept and welcome all thoughts, no matter how strange or disturbing they may be. Never resist thoughts. Thoughts have no power over you as long as you don't give it to them. Never feel ashamed, disgusted or shocked by your thoughts, this fuels intrusive thoughts and compulsions immensely. Compulsions and intrusive thoughts thrive on your negative reactions to them. Simply observe them without being irritated by them.
      OCD is threatened by Meditation/Awareness, that's why it will try to keep you from practicing them. When you practice Meditation/Awareness, your OCD might try to draw you back into its grasp through anxiety and anxious reactions in the body: tension, racing heart, sweating, stomach/heart pain etc., don't identify with these uncomfortable bodily sensations either and also observe all of this in a detached way. It's all just the OCD trying to trick you and ruin your life. The fact that your OCD will try to keep you from meditating/practicing Awareness should be a clear signal to you that you are on the right path to overcoming it.
      Meditating and constantly practicing Awareness might be very hard at first, but don't be discouraged, it will become easier and easier with time, and your OCD and all its symptoms will gradually become better. Even if thoughts still come up, they will not bother you anymore, you will just see them for the random bullshit that they are. The end goal would be to remain in Awareness 24/7, which would make you completely invulnerable to all compulsions and intrusive thoughts.
      Also, as corny as it may sound, what's even more important than Meditation and constantly practicing Awareness is fully and unconditionally loving yourself and everybody else and everything else in the world, even the most evil shit you can imagine, even your intrusive thoughts and compulsions. Your world and life have to become completely filled with Love. Negativity and suffering can only thrive where there is a lack of Love. Love repels negativity and suffering like oil repels water.
      You WILL get through this if you follow my advice consequently for a long enough time, please trust me for your own sake.

    Everyone has thoughts that they aren't proud of or if voiced, would make them into a pariah. Let's stop sensationalising something which is just being human. It is nothing more than the manifestation of man's sinful nature. It is incurable outside of God's help.

      If you have OCD (compulsions and/or intrusive thoughts), do the following practice and your compulsions and intrusive thoughts WILL 100% get better and most likely even completely vanish if you apply this advice for long enough, you have to do this if you want to get better, there is no way around it:
      Meditate daily, ideally 30-60+ minutes, but you can start with 5+ minutes and work your way up. I recommend Vipassana meditation, which simply means putting your attention on the bodily sensations of breathing.
      Meditation is essentially about one thing: Practicing Awareness. Sitting meditation is an intentional, focused practice of Awareness, but it's just the beginning. You also have to practice Awareness when you are not sitting down to meditate. You basically have to meditate/practice Awareness 24/7, no matter what you are doing, no matter how many thoughts come up and no matter how much you suffer mentally and physically.
      Practicing Awareness means simply observing your thoughts and compulsions (and also emotions, sensory perceptions, bodily sensations, pain etc., basically everything you experience) in a distanced and detached way. You have to realize that you ARE the observer/the Awareness that is free from all experience. YOU ARE NOT YOUR THOUGHTS AND COMPULSIONS. You are free from your thoughts, your thoughts just fool you into believing that they are real.       Um, no. OCD intrusive thoughts are by definition ego-dystonic, meaning that they do not align with the sufferer's true self or identity. Scientists believe that they are actually your brain reminding you of what NOT to do, not giving you advice on what to do. And spreading awareness about this condition is not "sensationalizing" it, it is providing literally life-saving education about this terminally terrifying and AWFUL thing to go through on a daily basis. I know that you're probably not aware, but those with Religious OCD and / or religious trauma could go into a spiral seeing this comment. OCD already convinces us through cognitive distortions that our thoughts come from our true self, and we really don't need people who have no experience, training, or education on the disease to spread false information about it. Lastly, I don't think G-d would want you to use His name to shame people. Have a good day.

    This illness is like a nightmare! The bad thing is that nightmares last for a night while this illness for years on end! Its really sad that some people get raped by their own brain like that! Imagine being yourself for years and then all of a sudden something attackes you and you no longer feel or think like yourself! You can realize this but you cant do anything to stop the torment!
