The filmmakers did a great job. However a goodly portion of that great job was adapting fairly close to the book. Clancy's book of the same name sold hundreds of thousands of hardcover copies (It was on the NY Times hardcover fiction best seller list for 2+ years IIRC); it then went on to sell millions of paperback copies. Clancy wrote 17 books around the main character (John Patrick 'Jack' Ryan) and after his death 21 more have been published by 'ghost' authors. It is one heck of a book.

This book started my love affair with Tom Clancy. When the movie came out, I have seen it in a cinema on a wide screen-.the scope of it was amazing . Have to admit, there was a trepidation- too many good books get mangled with mediocre adaptation, but by the end of this movie it was :" Yes!" . This one is brilliant.

*Ramius* knew that the only purpose for a sub like the *_Red October_* is for a _first strike._ Not defense. A sub with one purpose: _to start a war._ That's why he deflected and gave it to the Americans.
You also wondered why he wrote the letter telling the admiral their intention to defect. He explained it by telling his men the story about Cortez reaching the new land and burning his ships. Cortez did it to motivate the crew. So the letter *Ramius* sent put them in the position of having no choice but to succeed or die.
Delightful reaction! Thank you!Be well! 🙋🏼‍♂️

Ramius wrote the letter because he was arrogant. He's a good character and a talented captain, but he was over overconfident in his ability to hide from everyone.

    • @michaelccozens
      @michaelccozens ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@RexFuturi It's possible, but I don't think he was. He himself rated their chances at 1 in 3. He just knew it was the best chance he was likely to get, and it needed to be done, as demonstrated by the Soviets' secrecy around the sub. They could have used such a system for defense - "don't even move to attack us, or we'll end you before you start" - but, if that were their intention, they'd be parading the thing around. As observed in Dr. Strangelove, "a doomsday weapon's no good if you don't tell anyone about it!!". The only reason for the secrecy would be to preserve the best chance for a complete-surprise first-strike, and if that's your goal, you move as soon as possible.
The Red October had to be neutralized.

Here's an interesting fact. On the Dallas, when Jonesy plays the recorder for the captain, he mentions Russians subs running the Reykjanes Ridge at high speeds cause they had hyper-accurate surveys of the underwater canyons..Capt. Mancuso says "Yeah, yeah! Red Route One." Well, that information was classified at the time. The Russians didnt know we were onto them and had been watching them at Red Route One for some time. When Tom Clancey put that in the movie, he blew our cover and revealed the classified information to the Russians on accident

Clancy's book "The Hunt for Red October" came out in 1984, about 6 years before the movie. It was a huge bestseller. Contrary to the popular belief that Clancy had access to top secret information when writing the novel, he claims that he did his research in technical manuals, discussions with former submarine crew members, and books like Norman Polmar's "Guide to the Soviet Navy" and "Combat Fleets of the World" so that he could be as accurate as possible in describing the Soviet Navy's submarine capabilities. I worked in a book store when this book first came out. The rumor we heard was that Clancy was firmly requested to discuss what his sources were by the CIA because he was too accurate for someone without any military experience. But I have not been able to find any confirmation of that rumor now. I do know that he was not in hte military, having been rejected for service due to his poor eyesight.

In an interview with Scott Glenn, he talks about how he trained for being a attack boat skipper by spending a weekend on an actual Los Angeles class submarine. The captain ordered his crew to take Glenn's orders, and had Glenn repeat his orders so he could practice giving orders to a real crew. Glenn says his Bart Mancuso is him doing this submarine captain.
In the book version (a rarity where the movie is better) Ramius gives the Red October's missile keys to Jack. Jack in turn Jack gives the keys to Admiral Greer, and tells him "You can end the world with those".

Alec Baldwin wasn't the first choice to play Jack Ryan, in fact Kevin Costner was considered to play, but turned it down to star and direct the Oscar Winning epic DANCES WITH WOLVES

I think Sean Connery fits the old and experienced sailor vibe perfectly, but of course I never imagined a Lithuanian to sound Scottish. Alec Baldwin is perfect though, he is exactly how I imagined Jack Ryan to look.

He told them why he wrote the letter. He explained that when Pizarro came to the New World, he burned their ships, in order to motivate the men to strive for their goals rather than give up and return home. Same thing here. The one officer immediately suggested giving up and going home, at the first sign of trouble.

The Soviet Union and the USA did this for many years after WWII. Just tracking and "playing" with each other but never actually firing.
Tom Clancy's book was amazing in what it revealed about this game the 2 navies would play with each other.
Another good one of his is Patriot Games.

The sonobuoys were devices dropped by planes or helicopters to listen for submarines. They would be dropped in patterns to try to triangulate a sub's location and depth. The buoys were disposable and were supposed to sink after use, but they didn't always do so.
The cook was the "KGB" agent put on board in secret to monitor the crew, in addition to the political officer. This one could not fire a missile but it sounds like he was trying to set off the solid propellant. Most likely this would ignite as if being launched but it wouldn't leave the ship since the hatches were closed. The propellent would burn out the interior of the ship. The missiles were either ejected by compressed air so they would ignite outside of the sub or the sub might have to surface and set up a launch rig there (a difficult thing that exposed the sub and wasn't used for long). There is footage out there about a US Navy test firing a rocket from a torpedo tube, using an unmanned sub loaded with cameras. The rocket exhaust melted and blew out the back of the tube very quickly and did a lot of damage to the sub, sinking it I think.

In the book Ramius' motivations were made more clear as his wife's death was caused by Soviet doctors & corruptionin the Soviet system (lack of supplies that would have saved her IIRC) and of course to prevent the Soviets from having a weapon that would upset the balance of power. The Jack Ryan series of books, films & even tv series are all worth a look.

A Hall of Fame Book made into a Hall of Fame Movie. John McTiernan only directed 12 films but dang did he get his monies worth. Hunt for Red October, Die Hard, Predator and 13th Warrior are the highlights but I can't think of a one I would call bad. Also the plane that deployed sonar buoys and launched a torpedo at Red October was not American (or NATO). If you look at the tail you will see it badged with a Red Star. That would make it Soviet Naval Aviation.

Do you recall the Black con-man in the beginning, "Luther," who was thrown out the window and killed by the gangsters? That guy is Robert Earl Jones, and he is James Earl Jones' father.

I grew up watching this over 25 times! I never get sick of this movie! I ONLY read the book because i enjoyed the movie so much! I thought it interesting they created the fake Typhoon sub by cover a floating barge with wood superstructure. Also the undersea models are all suspended by thin cables moving them around and the "water" is a smoke -filled set backlit with blue light.

The reason Marko Ramius informed Admiral Yuri Podorin in Moscow, and told his own officers in the Captain’s mess (minus Dr. Petrov) of his informing Moscow of their intention to defect, was the same reason Hernán Cortés burned his ships in 1519 after reaching what is now Mexico. Cortés wanted to conquer the New World, but his men were sick of fighting the hostile natives. They wanted to return to Spain and so the Conquistador burned his ships. As a result, his men were well motivated because they had no choice but to proceed with their mission to conquer “New Spain.”

Great reaction! :) There's a lot going on in this movie and a lot of reacters get confused about the details. However, props to you guys for understanding what "defect" means! I showed this movie to my daughter and we were halfway through it before she asked what it meant. In the late eighties, *everybody* knew exactly what it meant, but I guess not so much these days! Great movie. Alec Baldwin was definitely the best Jack Ryan. I didn't think the other books were adapted so well, but that might be because I read the other books before seeing the movies. When I read The Hunt for Red October, I saw that they re-wrote the story for the movie, but it was in a good way, to compress the action.

This movie was a complete surprise for me when I first seen it. It was SO good. Look for other 'Jack Ryan' adventures with the following movies: Clear and Present Danger, Patriot Games, The Sum of all Fears, and Jack Ryan Shadow Recruit. All of these films are not sequels or prequels, but more like episodic individual adventures, each pretty much self contained. All are pretty damn good. All are based off of Tom Clancy novels. Several actors play the role of the lead character throughout the series of films. I really hope you enjoy these... :)

In the book they say Ramius did it because he was deeply mad at the government that allowed his wife to die from a very curable condition (I believe it was a strep infection that went septic) because they didn’t supply basic medical care to his wife and so she died. It’s also thought by fans that the one officer did live to go to Montana.

Appendicitis. The surgeon was drunk and by the time he sobered up it had burst. The antibiotics were substandard (Ramius joked that the bottle was probably nothing more than water) and she died. The doctor was related to a high up party official and got off with no punishment.

There was a Soviet surface warship in the Baltic that mutinied in the 70s ... the mutiny thought the Soviet policy wasn't aggressive enough. The Soviets hunted them down, boarded the ship and took it back under official control. The ship wasn't nuclear.

When Tom Clancy, author of the novel that movie is based on had a visit from government officials (possibly FBI) because officials wondered if either Clancy took classified information or someone giving classified information to him. Because his details in the book and movie nearly to similar to official info. But Clancy was clear by FBI.

In the books, his wife dies in a common surgical operation because the doctor was intoxicated when he performed it. Ramius was at sea on a submarine when it happened. This turn of events is the final straw and his disillusionment with the Soviet way of life is complete. He decides to punish Moscow and defect.

They forgot to explain exactly why Ramius' wife's death inspired him to defect, it is explained in the book however. Basically Ramius' wife was taken into surgery while he was out at sea, but the doctor who operated on her was very drunk and so she died in the opperating room. The doctor was not punished for the crime because his father was a high-ranking member of the communist party and so, fed up with the corrupt communist bureaucracy, he takes command of their newest and most advanced nuclear submarine to deliver it to the Soviet's worst enemy.

You must have missed the reason he announced his intentions to Moscow. It was to motivate the crew. If there's the chance to change your mind one of the crew might change his mind and ruin any chance of the plan succeeding. Like the story of Cortez he gave. When they reached the new world he burned the ships so they had no choice but to put everything into successfully relocate. If the ships were still in tact they have a chance to change thier mind, quit and go home.
