I might be a Californian born and raised (BWAAAAAH!) and we might be Oriental, but my family feels pretty American and I can relate to King of the Hill. I will admit that I was a little bit like Bobby when I was 8 until about 14. My dad was so much like Hank Hill that he even dressed like him and voted for Bush... Also, I grew up listening to Willie Nelson as my dad was a fan, following him from country, to country western to adult contemporary. I really do appreciate this show for all the reasons mentioned in this video but especially because it wasn't partisan.
If I'm not mistaken, the cinematography of King of the Hill requires the shot to be physically feasible with a hypothetical camera, except for dream and psychedelic sequences of course. The characters get into wild but never fantastical scenarios.
As someone who grew up in a small town in the midwest, this show reminds me of so many people and situations I knew/know in real life. Probably one of the best and most accurate (and fair minded) portraits of middle america in pop culture. Hank may be a stick in the mud, but he's ultimately a good guy and often, in his own way, has a point,
I was born and raised in Texas and we did this same thing at my high school, where the football players dressed as cheerleaders and vice versa. Good ol Texas.
You don't HAVE to have been from a rural, small town kinda place to appreciate King of the Hill, but I think it helps. Hank and the guys remind me of SO MANY middle-aged adults I knew when I was a kid in rural Michigan. No interests beyond their lawns and what route they take to work. Anything beyond the world of like 1972 just seems stupid and not worth learning to them. I made sushi to bring to Christmas once a couple years ago for appetizers, and half my uncles were like five-year-olds afraid to try it. Because it's like "This is a meat other than steak and vegetables other than potatoes! I'm not eating this!" It wasn't even raw sushi! It was just California rolls and some vegetarian rolls. To the credit of everyone else, it was a big hit overall, but it was still like "Come on, you're 60 years old and acting like a toddler!"
Yeah being from the UP, some of the jokes from Trailer Park Boys, Letterkenny and Koth don't land because they aren't even absurd enough to be funny, just business as usual. Like Ricky's car isn't even far off from some of the trucks around my house lmao
I'm from Michigan as well and grew up in the 90s. This show was a satire of my dad and all his friends to a T. I think it does speak a bit more to rural americans who know these characters in real life.
@@boppe2235 Oh, I love Letterkenny. It's so much like the little town I grew up in. We got little roadside produce stands like that everywhere, there's an Amish community nearby, their farm reminds me of my aunt and uncle's house and a few other friends. And now Shoresy is set in a city of about 100k, just like where I live NOW.
Whenever Peggy says "I read somewhere", I can't help imagine some kind of combination of Reader's Digest and "Now!" magazine being hoarded in the basement for when Peggy needs a "fact".
one thing about KOTH that I dont think is appreciated enough is how the design of the characters is made in a way that doesn't look cartoonish. It manages to be simplistic without being overly realistic that gives it a much more grounded feel.
bobby hill and the hank x bobby dynamic has aged so frickin well- with the extremes of the way boomers/gen x (parents) and millenials/gen z (kids) think only growing further apart over the last decade, the show is worth rewatching for that reason alone. But the jokes, continuity, warmth and nostalgia will keep it on in my home for years to come ❤️ Great video, man!
_"I'm your worst nightmare!_ I have a 3-line phone and *NOTHING* to do with my time!" Has to be my favorite line out of the show! And the people applauding around him ships it, lmao
I love King Of The Hill! When I was growing up I never missed an episode, it was pure goodness in an ever growing evil world! It's coming back, it's official!
21:20 That's also something live-action shows used to do back in the 80s and 90s. Usually after one of those insipid "Very Special" episodes, they'd bring out the cast to be like "We had some laughs tonight, but if you or someone you love is addicted to crack, call this number please." And then you'd call the number and it was just some stupid rehab shit instead of a guy who can score you more crack like you hoped. It was misleading.
I can say that I grew up watching this show as a kid. Loved it since I was 7 years old! Simpsons, King of the Hill and Futurama were my faves growing up!
This show came out when I was a kid. I remember thinking the cigarettes episode was hilarious, but otherwise I couldn’t get into it. I think I was too young to appreciate it at the time. As an adult, I think it’s one of the most brilliant shows ever created.
I use to watch king of the hill from ages 13-22 and man I loved it! This is coming from Southern California (LA county) brown/white boy who use to understand the meaning behind every episode. God bless 🇺🇸 baby.
I've went through so many and so far this is the best analysis of king of the hill l've seen by a land slide. You are incredible at what you do. Keep up the good work.
I agree! I'm a huge KOTH fan, but most analysis of it is far too superficial, and on the surface. There's so much depth within KOTH that is more than just a funny animated series, and this video showed it!
As part of the Nascar audience they were trying to lure in I can say I loved it from day one. You get to laugh at the over-the-top progressives and ourselves in one show. Beautiful.
My favorite joke that I think is very underrated is when Dale throws a knife at his father, it sticks into the wall next to him, and Dale threatens him by saying "And next time I'll try and miss"
I have consistently come back to watch this video throughout the last 5 years. I find this video to be one of the best put together and edited analysis of a show or anything on TH-cam. Instead of just putting a random csgo video or gameplay In the background, this video puts clips which are relevant to what is being said in a way I have not seen anywhere else. The audio in the background ties it all together and I don’t think anyone else would do this in such a masterful way. I think this is my favorite TH-cam video
On the setting, it's really strange how similar parts of the Midwest are to King of the Hill's depiction of Texas. I agree that picking Texas specifically was bold, but I think it's a lot more relatable to a large portion of the US than one would think.
Honestly, when I was a kid, I never got into KotH like I have as of recently, but I always remember being mesmerized by it when it would come on TV at the community center I frequented. Something about it always captivated me.
I’m so glad you ended this video on the episode where Bobby joins the meat-grading team. I know there were episodes that aired after it but to me that last scene with Hank & Bobby grilling together is the closest thing we’ll ever see to a long-running series “sticking the landing”.
@@billriddle9215 that episode was dark as night and a good one overall; but my god what a terrible “finale”. I choose to think this is one of those times Fox messed up the order of airing (ie what they did with Futurama S4) Idc. @@brucemorris3830 Actually that's correct. Hank and Bobby grilling was the intended series finale and meant to be aired last, but Fox forgot to air about 4 episodes and just dumped them after "To Sirloin With Love," but for all intents and purposes, it's the *true* finale.
Great video! Absolutely love the western music in the background, it fits the HOTH vibe very well :) Funny you mentioned catching the last bits of KOTH waiting for something else to come on TV. That's basically how everyone I know was exposed to KOTH
Been going through KOTH recently, haven't watched it for more than ten years and I've been enjoying how wholesome the episodes are, and how relatable the characters are. Awesome video, great commentary and the Hank Williams in the background sets the tone perfectly.

I love King of the Hill, especially the first six seasons. The storyline from the beginning of season two to the end of season three is so brilliant it’s insane. Some of the episodes, had they been live action it’s no doubt they’d have racked up the academy awards. They got a few but it’s a very underrated brilliantly written story.
I didn't understand or like king of the hill when I was younger. It just seemed dry and awkward. Looking back now though I can see where its genius was.
The King of the Hill writers are in Cartoon Wars pt 2 because they sent flowers to the South Park staff after the first episode of Cartoon Wars aired. They HATED having to share a programming bloc with Family Guy.
I remember as a kid actually genuinely loving king of the hill. Because of the subtlety and how easy going it is to watch. I used to watch it every single night on adult swim before I went to sleep. And that’s how I fell in love with the show and watched every single episode. It was routine for me to fall asleep to king of the hill for years. Also I probably got the humor really well because of its setting. I’m from a border town in New Mexico that’s 30 minutes from El Paso Texas. King of the Hills portrayal of Texas and areas close enough to Texas that it may as well be Texas is spot on.
it was aired in Philippines a decade ago. i think the network was JackTV. suffice to say our cable couldnt really get decent signal to watch on that channel smoothly so i missed out on watching it including South Park. i had to watch them online
Man this hits me in the feels. I Iived with my grandparents most my life and they recently passed. But every weekday on the TheU at 4pm an hour of king of the hill. Then the Simpsons was on at 5pm. We ate dinner(we know grandmas make great fuckin food) at 5:30 with the news. Then my grandfather religiously watched Seinfeld at 6pm. It was great.
That sounds like a great time in childhood. I’m sure you’ll always carry them in with you in life and whenever you do something great or generous - your grandparents are right there living on through the values and love and care they invested in you...
So are you Chinese or Japanese?
Thank you for Bing'ing your searches. It really got an hugely out of proportion laugh from me.
I'm not eating this!"
It wasn't even raw sushi! It was just California rolls and some vegetarian rolls.
To the credit of everyone else, it was a big hit overall, but it was still like "Come on, you're 60 years old and acting like a toddler!"
Small town Texas is all I’ve ever known- they really did it justice.
Yeah being from the UP, some of the jokes from Trailer Park Boys, Letterkenny and Koth don't land because they aren't even absurd enough to be funny, just business as usual. Like Ricky's car isn't even far off from some of the trucks around my house lmao
@@boppe2235 That is the funny part to me. Reality is hilarious. You don't need to have a extended 20 minute fight with a giant chicken to be humorous.
It manages to be simplistic without being overly realistic that gives it a much more grounded feel.
king of the hill was ahead of its time
3:20 You left out when Hank says, "Nudity!" And throws the troll into a box. It's maybe the funniest moment in the series.
I love this show so much, nothing compares. Just something about it that makes it such a feel good show.
bobby hill and the hank x bobby dynamic has aged so frickin well- with the extremes of the way boomers/gen x (parents) and millenials/gen z (kids) think only growing further apart over the last decade, the show is worth rewatching for that reason alone. But the jokes, continuity, warmth and nostalgia will keep it on in my home for years to come ❤️ Great video, man!
The soundtrack to this was perfect, well done.
_"I'm your worst nightmare!_ I have a 3-line phone and *NOTHING* to do with my time!"
Has to be my favorite line out of the show!
And the people applauding around him ships it, lmao
I used to watch this late at night with my dad. Great inter-generational show.
lol I was lucky enough to enjoy this show when I was kid, but now being 25 and actually understanding all the jokes now. This show is gold!
I love King Of The Hill! When I was growing up I never missed an episode, it was pure goodness in an ever growing evil world! It's coming back, it's official!
21:20 That's also something live-action shows used to do back in the 80s and 90s.
Usually after one of those insipid "Very Special" episodes, they'd bring out the cast to be like "We had some laughs tonight, but if you or someone you love is addicted to crack, call this number please."
And then you'd call the number and it was just some stupid rehab shit instead of a guy who can score you more crack like you hoped. It was misleading.
nrrork 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Brilliant.
Had us in the first half not gonna lie
You got any “bait” Jack?
I don’t know what’s worse I know every song he played, or I actively listen to all of them 😂
Lived in texas my whole life, loved this show
I can say that I grew up watching this show as a kid. Loved it since I was 7 years old! Simpsons, King of the Hill and Futurama were my faves growing up!
Bill... "The Ocean? WhAT OcEaN? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😅🤣😅🤣🤣🤣 Gah damn ...
Love that you're using Hank Williams songs. His version of "I'm so lonesome I could cry" is my favorite!
This show came out when I was a kid. I remember thinking the cigarettes episode was hilarious, but otherwise I couldn’t get into it. I think I was too young to appreciate it at the time. As an adult, I think it’s one of the most brilliant shows ever created.
We all need a Hank Hill in our lives.
I remember every single night at 9:00 King of the Hill would come on, have some good memories watching it on Adult Swim
LOVE the music, Hank Sr never (in my mind) disappoints!!!
A great descriptor of my favorite show, nice job!
And hey, digging the OLD SCHOOL country in the background!
I use to watch king of the hill from ages 13-22 and man I loved it! This is coming from Southern California (LA county) brown/white boy who use to understand the meaning behind every episode. God bless 🇺🇸 baby.
There's something funny about *Royal Crown* soda advertising their _American_ taste
Huh. I always wondered what RC stood for. Still a good soda though.
@@cameronvadnais4388 RC tastes like dollar store cola.
I loved this show as a kid n I’d watch it with my parents over mash any day back then just because it was a cartoon
I've went through so many and so far this is the best analysis of king of the hill l've seen by a land slide. You are incredible at what you do.
Keep up the good work.
Thanks!
@@talkinbout8159 welcome
The CSGO or equivalent footage really grinds my gears.
I love King of the Hill more than any other “adult” shows. Including The Simpsons.
Still one of the best random videos I’ve come across on TH-cam
Roseanne came back to huge rating. I believe the same would happen with KOTH.
Edward Durden me too man me too I'm sixteen i was raised on koth
For sure
Man!! I would love it!
Not really I miss it tho

I’m a Simple country boy I hear Hank Williams and see koth and I subscribe
I was in 2nd grade when it debuted and I liked it a lot even if a lot went over my head.
Thank you for this well thought out video. It’s nice to see other people who love this show just as much as my family and I.
On the setting, it's really strange how similar parts of the Midwest are to King of the Hill's depiction of Texas. I agree that picking Texas specifically was bold, but I think it's a lot more relatable to a large portion of the US than one would think.
All I can say is I really appreciate the usage of Hank Williams music and other great real country songs.
This is so well put together and researched! I really wish you had more videos. Subbed.
Thanks, that's always the best motivation. Putting together some more now.
You won me over in seconds with hank williams. Subscribed.

Watching TV in the US sounds like hell when it comes to ads. We still only get one commercial break for a 22-minute show in the UK.
I didn't know this and now I'm depressed.
the soundtrack for this essay is proper good
I can forgive hank for the doggy confusion. I'd be thrown off in that situation.
As a child i loved king of the hill as i grew up it got even better. Hank was a hard working man and what i see as a real american.
Honestly, when I was a kid, I never got into KotH like I have as of recently, but I always remember being mesmerized by it when it would come on TV at the community center I frequented. Something about it always captivated me.
As a Texan I kinda regret not appreciating this show more in my youth.
Very well put together review. You deserve more subscribers man. You're good at this.
Nice background music. Hank Hill would approve! I especially enjoyed singing along to them.
I’m so glad you ended this video on the episode where Bobby joins the meat-grading team. I know there were episodes that aired after it but to me that last scene with Hank & Bobby grilling together is the closest thing we’ll ever see to a long-running series “sticking the landing”.
I felt the same way,the episode with Kahn on anti pills was the last.
@@billriddle9215 that episode was dark as night and a good one overall; but my god what a terrible “finale”. I choose to think this is one of those times Fox messed up the order of airing (ie what they did with Futurama S4)
Idc. The canonical finale of the show is Hank & Bobby grilling steaks, I tell ya hwat 😂
That's basically how everyone I know was exposed to KOTH
see when my mother was pregnant with me, they watched a shit ton of king in the hill. im predisposed to like the show
Been going through KOTH recently, haven't watched it for more than ten years and I've been enjoying how wholesome the episodes are, and how relatable the characters are.
Awesome video, great commentary and the Hank Williams in the background sets the tone perfectly.
Was I one of the rare kids who loved king of the hill? I never knew young children did not watch it much like Simpsons and family guy
Guess I never really asked around. This was one of my favorite shows growing up
I love King of the Hill, especially the first six seasons. The storyline from the beginning of season two to the end of season three is so brilliant it’s insane. Some of the episodes, had they been live action it’s no doubt they’d have racked up the academy awards. They got a few but it’s a very underrated brilliantly written story.
Masterful analysis, my man! You're a damn good writer! And the edits were funny too! Really noice job!
I love the background music. You have mad editing skills, too. Thank you for making and posting this.
I didn't understand or like king of the hill when I was younger. It just seemed dry and awkward. Looking back now though I can see where its genius was.
I resonated with the first minute of this SO much! ...ok, time to watch the rest now.
The King of the Hill writers are in Cartoon Wars pt 2 because they sent flowers to the South Park staff after the first episode of Cartoon Wars aired. They HATED having to share a programming bloc with Family Guy.
I just watched the first 7 episodes for the first time as an adult and it is pretty heartwarming and funny.
Love the hank Williams in the background
I remember as a kid actually genuinely loving king of the hill. Because of the subtlety and how easy going it is to watch. I used to watch it every single night on adult swim before I went to sleep. And that’s how I fell in love with the show and watched every single episode. It was routine for me to fall asleep to king of the hill for years. Also I probably got the humor really well because of its setting. I’m from a border town in New Mexico that’s 30 minutes from El Paso Texas. King of the Hills portrayal of Texas and areas close enough to Texas that it may as well be Texas is spot on.
I'm from Malaysia and they didn't think of airing the show here. They did air Simpsons and Family Guy. I enjoyed this animation
it was aired in Philippines a decade ago. i think the network was JackTV. suffice to say our cable couldnt really get decent signal to watch on that channel smoothly so i missed out on watching it including South Park. i had to watch them online
Yeah King of the Hill is my favorite of all time I can re watch over and over again it never gets old to me.
This an excellent analysis of a criminally underrated series. Youve earned my sub. Nice work
You got hank Williams, Ralph Stanley! DUDE YOU WON ME OVER BY THE MUSIC ALONE
I’m also sure they were most proud of you growing up to be a decent person and your time growing up with them must have been what made their life worth living snd im sure your childhood gave them a purpose they would have not had otherwise at that age.
God bless them and I’m sorry for your loss msn
I just started watching this show as an adult recently, it's amazing! Thanks for the insight brother.
You showed a pic of Jeff Daniels when you said 'Craig Daniels'
Is joke
youre music choice for this video was phenomenal, i couldn't help but jam out while watching.
