This is my new favorite channel on TH-cam
Ditto!
OMG I love these chats with your dad. You are so lucky to be able to share these memories. Love it!!
I was curious what it was like working for Vogue and found Harry's answer interesting so thought I would share.
Jarvis Cocker next week!
that was super interesting, thanks for sharing!
Sparkling pearls of wisdom, as always. I do like that you release your videos on Mondays, because it's a little something to look forward to.
Thank you! Much appreciated as always.
And I'm so glad - sticking to Mondays keeps us accountable too 😁
What a story! Your dad is an absolute legend. So glad I've discovered your channel. Please, keep going!
Thanks a lot! Really appreciate comments like these.

Thank you. We enjoy making them😁

Noted! Will defo include. Ty for the comment 😁
Heyy! I stunbled upon your channel today and I'm so glad I did! Kudos to you, for making this project happen and great thanks to Harry for such honest and informative answers!
I can't wait to watch the other videos haha
I like Fred asking the questions. Fascinating video as always!
What happened with the Peugeot?
Cheers guys! Thanks for watching. Haha Harry flipped that Peugeot on Christmas day, we ended up upside down😬
@@fredandharryborden whoah! Not a merry christmas
Each video is so interesting. Comforting in a way too as I’ve often questioned my abilities in the past (although not so much now). Could I have done more, was I creative enough, do I know what I’m doing, and are others better than me at doing the same job?
I think over time you assure yourself that all photographers have doubts, but it’s how you deal with them and grow from them. As is illustrated in your excellent video stories.
Thanks a lot! Can definitely relate to this in multiple industries. I'm sure its so common.
Thanks for the comment!
Absolutely brilliant and fascinating video. Thank you.
Thank you!
Kudos for breaking down the realities of being a working editorial photographer where access and prestige matter so much (and the pay is crap).
I love fred bringing up the xmas you flipped the car
😂
I know this really isn’t the point of the video but I love that photo of Gordon Ramsay! The way he’s lit, the green/blue colour, the slow shutter.
Is there a video where you break this shoot down? 🤩
@@RIDEMusicYT we have a video about ramsay. It was one of our earlier ones. We do think we could remake these to be better but for now it's on the channel :)
Glad you like the shot! It's a really early one. Lit with a single red head! 😊
First, Harry please sign the image behind you on the wall. You're an artist, artists sign their work.🙂
Second, Fuji rangefinder?
Third, love the behind the scenes interviews. Keep working on it. Second camera?
Haha i definitely should get him to sign it!
@harryborden about fuji rangefinder!
And yea a second camera angle could be good. Then I could be more involved as well just make the video more dynamic.
Thanks for sharing. Its interesting hearing about the life and not techniques. Also shows it's often who you know, not how good you are :(
I also thought this and asked Harry about this idea at the end of the video. He actually disagrees however!
I hope you know how valuable your videos are for photographers like me who are starting out. 😊
Thats great to hear! Thanks for the kind comment 😊
Thank you👌
Thanks for watch Sandro!! 😁
@@fredandharryborden I always find it to be very interesting (and very unique) watch though I would like for Harry to go deeper into choices he made while doing some of those sessions. Like choices he made while picking a location, subject placement within composition and mood/emotion getting out of his subjects. Cheers!
Brilliant suggestions. Next interview I will make sure to explore these!
I shot for 2 publications on a regular basis . . . for years . . . then one day the publishing company that owned the two magazines was sold and the people changed who knew me the jobs dried up. They went from a assigned type job to just going for stock submissions or working on spec with no guarantee of being used. Mind you this wasn't on the level of publication as this video is about, there was no prestige associated with them, no where near, but it paid the bills and was fun. I loved working for them, but things change and you just move on.
Hey Harry! I've been doing concerts and stuff for about 3 years now, haven't got the chance of meeting the "important people" or perhaps the right ones. Still working with the underground scene (which I still enjoy). I'm in Latam so I know it's pretty different. But I might ask as well, how much time / experience did you have prior to sending your portfolio?
Great question - I will get @harryborden to respond to this!
It was a different time back then. tbh, I showed my portfolio to anyone who would look at it from day one! It's good to get used to showing people your work. When working at the NME, I did prefer to do portrait sessions rather than live pictures as it gave me more of a chance to express my individuality and be noticed. If I was starting now, I'd ensure I had a folio on my phone. handy to quickly to show prospective clients. Good luck! 🙂
Any chance of a full video about photographing Marco Pierre White?
Of course. They are some wicked pics too, defo worth a feature.
Thanks for the comment.
@@fredandharryborden Fantastic! I stumbled upon your channel the other week and have been binging it. I don't really know anything about photography but your dad is a great storyteller and I love hearing his anecdotes and experiences. What an amazing career!
Marco is a very interesting guy and I'd love to hear what it was like photographing him. His Oxford Union address is still one of the best things I've ever watched.
I used to believe the perseverance thing until an editor from American Vogue said we expect you to know or we wouldn’t even consider you
but we wanna know if you’re gonna be fun to work with some kind of chemistry with the editors and that’s usually word-of-mouth
So who you know is actually critical to the formula also
Good for you for pushing back on Conde Nast’s abusive contract. *You* were hard to work with, they were.
Thank you!
thanks for that - get Fred on camera!
@@sadshoe haha it does need to happen!
It may be cynical, and what you know may get you to who you know, but a lot of ins are by way of who you know, unfortunately. I know from experience (being on the outside, not the inside!). Too many knows in this paragraph 😄
Haha lots of knows for sure. But I agree it's a combination of both and maybe one isn't enough.
I share this :
..about 35 years ago I went to italy to pop up at Vogue-Italx at theyr redactors, no apointments or contacts whatsoeve. Pure "audace".
Being then timid and not self-confident (or rather : needing reassurance), I stopped in a bar not far - not knowing still witch block it then would be.
I went through my photographes that (as always) I had in a loose and messy way..
A woman past behind with her coffee, saw some photos and asked what I was up to. I stuttered about my intention (my italian was quite hesitant too).
She said to follow, knowing where it is since she now worked exactly at the head redactor's office room ...!
15 seconds in there, she had just announced she had brought someone in here with some interesting work and interest to collaborate - that the chief YELLED at her that this was not the way to go.
End of the (true) story.
(Tails have tails.)
Fascinating story!
Sorry to hear it didn't end maybe how you would have liked but still must of been quite an experience!
Thanks for the comment 😊
