  • Monster Hunter World is my first Review for a Playstation 4 game. And its quite the whopper! Keep in mind: The "Fun"-Part is more a reflection of me than of the game. And even if you disagree. I still lova ya'! I think this is one of my favorite videos I've ever done.
    Enjoy the video and find out if Monster Hunter World is worth a buy from the Ranton Perspective.
    What you see in this video is COMEDY! It is meant to entertain. So lighten up and have fun!

      Great video man just wanted to point a couple things out, it's not that the fighting system is bad it just that it works like that your attacks leave openings for the monsters it's apparently simple but it IS complex if you see speedruns you'll see that not only can hunts take much less time than you think, the combat is more impressive than what it looks like at face value
      At least in past monster hunter games
      Then again it IS a niche game for niche audience

    • @atrotoxin1152
      @atrotoxin1152 5 ปีที่แล้ว +51

      He also only had three levels of sharpness on that blade. Thats a completely acceptable thing for him to do as a good game lets the players have the freedom of different play styles. I find that MHW is guilty of trapping the player in certain play styles. Each weapon is best used one way and the game punishes you for not playing it that specific way. It opinion but I couldnt understand how this series is so acclaimed when it fails or is convoluted on nearly every front

    • @DatBoiKwame
      @DatBoiKwame 5 ปีที่แล้ว +328

      @@atrotoxin1152 You have 14 weapon types that support plenty of styles each. And keeping your weapon sharpened and upgrading to higher weapons with better sharpness isn't a 'play style'. It's just following the natural progression of the game. I agree with you on the front that a good game should let people do whatever they want, but lets not get carried away and pretend like a game having a structure and a 'learning curve' is suddenly a bad thing.

    As a monster hunter veteran, I have to disagree. There are elemental weaknesses, stun, sleep, paralyses,, you have the elements to be able to beat the monster quickly and adapt. This franchise is fixated on equipment and raw skill and prediction of where the monster will go. For example predicting the tail swipe of the rathian, dodge roll through it with avoid+1 to do an upswing with the hunting horn, stunning it, then trap it when it is done being stunned, paralyse it with knives or make a member make it fall asleep. Sleep bomb it. Trust me, this process alone takes away 80% of its HP.
    Monster Hunter is about studying monster behaviour and adapting to it, of course you'll take a long time by only using your weapon. They do not give you a broad inventory for nothing. You take items, you mix items to get the same items to prelong said tactic. Proper preparation is the key to fast victories. I have been playing MH since Tri back in 2009
    The auto marking system wasn't there until 3U, before that we couldn't even auto focus on monsters (And isn't neccesary in the long run, it was a very hated new addition within the fanbase). It is all about the timing and positioning! You'll come to appreciate the system more if you look at it from an other perspective. I really hope you'll give this franchise a second chance.

      Totally agree, I suppose Ranton’s view of “mindless button mashing” is one way of looking at it. But at it’s core, MonsterHunter needs STRATEGY, the entire system of the game is built upon it, each monster being different from the other. Didn’t really see this strategical aspect of the game in the review, let alone acknowledged at all.
      Despite the different views I have with him, Still gotta love Ranton though

    @SorryJustDrifting 6 ปีที่แล้ว +104

    I don't know if it's just me... But...I kill monsters in like... 10 - 15 minutes...
    But, as for the review. I disagree. With a few points, clipping and lack of a in-game pause button when solo, yes, very annoying. Everything else seems pretty surface level misunderstanding.
    I would chock it up as a lack of just basic game knowledge. This game is about putting time in and NOT RUSHING. Rushing through, ruins the experience, the entire premise is learning the means to hunt in this game. Rushing through dilutes the experience, I beat the first arc of the campaign in... i think 100 hours in? Learning how to kill monsters in a timely manner.
    Hearing you take 30 minutes to kill Pukei-Pukie [Who literally takes me 5 miunutes on a bad run] just means you are just mashing buttons and/or getting punished and having to retreat and heal. Before re-engaging on the monster. That even proven in the arena where with basic gear and some clever tricks, can kill monsters in 1-2 minutes, and using things like dropping environmental damage on monsters (As shown on the cutscenes } deals massive damage reducing time during hunts. It's not about just slashing the monster to bits, but using the tools to take it down, including other monsters and the enviroment. As shown in cut-scenes.
    I think I saw you using duel swords? Yeah those aren't that deep, it's a button mashing weapon, with very little outside of button mashing. Did you try the other weapons with more challenging and rewarding mechanics? Like Switch Axe or Charge Blade? They deal massive damage, in return for complex and high skill ceiling. Heck, I think even Great Sword, Insect Glaive, Longsword have some depth and nuisance.
    But that's just me. I come from other Monster Hunter games, and had friends also come into it the first time, and just telling them not to rush the game, they came to love it. Solo and occasionally in teams. That's why it's so popular and getting so much love.
    This game is like a fine desert, you take your time, take small bites, enjoy the flavors that blend and give it character. This isn't a snack food like other game, where you eat it mindlessly.
    But, funny review. you get the thumbs for now, I will be look out for more reviews. Just can't agree with you here.

      I started to rush thru it at the 15 hour mark. If until then I’m not having fun it’s a problem. Also I played through the vast majority of the game with a gun, but I didn’t use much of that footage to avoid spoilers. Many people have made the points that u have made but I always bring it back to presentation. A game has to present its depth in an accessible way, otherwise how am I supposed to get into it? Anyways the “fun”-segment is more a reflection of me than of the game itself. Not trying to be objective at all😁 But I’m glad that u thought the review was entertaining at least and I appreciate your input 🙏

    I laughed my ass off the whole video one of my favorite reviews so far. I've been playing this game nonstop since release clocking in at 100 hours already. The lock on camera is clunky as hell but in this game the options menu IS YOUR FRIEND I set it up to be comfortable as possible and only target the big boys and yes the monsters take forever to kill. I try to be patient and not tire myself out fighting them but I have enough experience now to utilize the games many tools like bombs and traps.
    I will say though it's been a while that I bought a game and actually enjoyed it every minute even at 100 hours I still feel there's more out there to hunt and multiplayer is tons of fun giving me many more hours of enjoyment but this is what I wanted in a game forever. I just wanna join the discussion here, on the side of Monster Hunter!
    I just want to address some of the issues you have with the game as MH fan, but not in the typical "OH YOU'RE JUST BAD" reactions you get from the average MH player to non-fans.
    The first thing I want to address is clipping, and it's regarding the weapon that you were using, the Dual Blades. On sloped surfaces you are able to slide down them, and do a jumping attacking. Dual blades have a special form of this kind of attack where they spin themselves like an anime character going ham with swords down the sides of their enemies. So from the scenes you were showing for that point, I believe it's safe to assume it's based off of that one attack, which is doing it's intended mechanic :)
    The next point I'd like to bring up is the camera. I completely agree with this, the camera system they implemented is sometimes faulty and sometimes you have to fight the camera, but the camera controls are pretty simple if you read or test the controls. Near the map there are images of the monsters you're trying to fight. you're suppose to rapidly hit the R3 button until the red reticle is locked onto the monsters you are trying to focus on. If you don't do it fast, and by that I mean you wait a few seconds before pressing the button (as show in your video) it'll just de-target whatever your targeting. The camera is clunky, but I believe with just playing the game you eventually get over it.
    The next thing is the combat and health balance! Since this is your first monster hunter, most people give this criticism that it does not feel fluid or is button spam-y. Your character attacks wherever they facing, regardless if you're locked onto an enemy or not. Now this definitely feels unnatural to a lot of people, especially because what is the purpose of locking onto an enemy if you're not gonna be always attacking in their direction? But the combat is made to be clunky. It's less about dynasty warrior beat em up and more about pattern recognition like dark souls.( Albeit, Dark soul's combat is way more fluid). But if you have the patience to learn the combat it'll feel fluid once you get a feel for the actual character movement. Kinda like when people start playing DDR or In The Groove, a lot of patterns will feel really awkward at first until you figure out the optimal way to move your feet. But because it's unnatural and awkward when you first start, does that mean it's a bad system? of course not! It just means the skill floor and skill ceiling is a bit higher than usual! Same can be said with Monster Hunter. NEXT we have health balance. Personally I find the monsters having, well, monstrous amounts of health to make a lot of sense, from a "if-it-were-real-ism" stand point. You're a small puny human fending off monstrous beasts with bits of metal, bone, and animal skin. It'd probably be lengthy if you've been poking them with something comparable to a pointy stick! (You're death in the scene about messing up does happen, but you were also wearing the base armor, so it makes sense to be one-shotted).
    On voice actors, the reason why everyone just makes a singular noise, is because it's essentially a staple of the Monster Hunter series haha, but seriously though it's weird how you can get that message from them making sighs, grunts, and laughs.
    That's pretty much everything I wanted to bring up, but I also want to say I really enjoy your content, as your reviews are always funny, and I enjoy your opinions! I respect your Shaolin history, as I'm Half-Chinese, and I'm excited to see more of your content. Can you please review Kingdom Hearts 3 when it comes out! I'm sure we will have differing opinions but I love seeing your reviews on series that I liked, and found myself enjoying this review a lot more than some of your other ones!

      Agreed! But thats my point. Every game is fun with friends. And I think the game is perfect for online play for sure. But I rated the game's singleplayer and it was a nightmare... But I'm happy that you're enjoying it :)

    • @stellarhyme3
      @stellarhyme3 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sh0cklyz I think everyone is missing the main point Ranton is making. The combat doesn't matter if every Monster in the game is fixed so that it takes 30 minutes or more to defeat it. Meaning it doesn't matte how you upgrade your weapon, character or armor, it will have no discernible affect on gameplay. It will still take you 30 minutes to defeat this Monsters. So what's the point of the grind if you see no positive affects of that grind in the game. Every upgrade becomes purely cosmetic. And I've played the game and the combat sucks, the way it looks, the lack of a hit box, the clipping, enemy response to your hits all suck. It's just a random movement fest. Combat needs to feel and look like combat to be enjoyable. And this game doesn't provide that.

    I've played MHW for roughly 250hrs and the main reason I've lost interest is the complete opposite - fights are too short and easy. I've spent more time loading in and out of a mission, than actually fighting the damned thing.

    This is probably the only Ranton review that I don't agree with. Monster hunter is about fighting big ass monsters and it takes a while, that's always been a known fact. So why would you complain about the length of the fights when thatsbthe whole point of the game??? Also in every clip he has red sharpness and is hitting hard points rather than going for weak points. The early game monsters should only take around 10 - 15 minutes to beat. Especially if you're playing solo. I like your reviews dude but you should have done your research on the game first before playing it.

    ey b0ss, kinda late comment but I'm here cos I'm a new fan who rewatched all your vids the day I discovered your channel, and am somewhat of a MH fan. I would just like to say that, I do agree with you. MH has always been a franchise that is very hard to get into. The game never conveys or presents its combat system in a way that reflects people's love for it. Armor and weapon upgrades can sometimes also feel inconsequential. And most importantly, the single player experience is always, ALWAYS fucking garbage. I always slog through the single player experience out of all my previous MH playthroughs just to unlock all the basic shit and then jump into, the glorious and revered multiplayer. I understand that your review is about the single player experience, and I do agree that it is terribad. But I would just like to say that the multiplayer of this game is mind bogglingly addicting and is what the developers and all the fans would say to be the true monster hunter experience. In fact, I was once also somewhat of a MH hater when I was only playing by myself in single player mode. But once I stepped into online multiplayer, and played with other people who could hold back the monster for me and allow me to make mistakes that would have not been inconsequential if I were to play alone, I started to truly understand how the battle system worked. Playing in coop is what made something inside me click and truly appreciate the game as it was intended to be, a multiplayer coop game. And if it was not too much to ask, I would like for you to do so too. Just try playing a few online coop games, with strangers, or with friends, and I hope that you can find the game to be as fun as I had felt all those years ago, and even until now.

    Ranton you're pretty much right about the game. However, you over look the idea of a learning curve. The in game hunting manual tells you weak spots and weaknesses to exploit and all of the weapons take time to learn. Saying its just button mashing isn't really honest. Sure you are spamming to do combos but positioning on a monster is key. Also, with weapons like the greatsword and hammer you are looking for openings to strike and deal damage. Most hunts actually take 5-15 minutes. Auto aim is shit but there are settings you can change to alleviate the issues you complained about. Otherwise, great review of a 90's game in the twenty-first century.

    He never played the other Monster Hunter games in the series, so i can understand the lack of initial knowledge with the series as a whole, but you just straight up IGNORED some of the games base functions. They even made it EASIER for newer players. Bug nets, Pickaxes, Whetstone? you used to have to either buy or collect the materials to make those. NOW YOU DON'T EVEN HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT IT. Potions and healing? You only need herbs, and if you wanted a chance at having any money early in the older games, you had to go out and farm for all that shit. Taking a couple hours at the start was recommended so that moving into hunts was simpler and easier in the long run. You can ignore all the shit in world because gathering is so streamlined now. Not only that, but now you can RUN while you're healing (not an elitest, i could care less if this game is easier than other games in the franchise. People said the same thing about 4U but its a majority of the fan-bases favorite soooo???) and EVERY. SINGLE. CLIP. You had orange sharpness and complained that the fights took SOOOO LONGGG when you were doing roughly 40 to 50 percent of the damage you should've been. a good example for me would be take a Pukei greatsword into a low rank Jyuratodus fight. that shit will take you no more than 15 minutes. another example, Tobi-Kadachi? Farm Jyuratodus for a few, make his charge blade, fight Tobi, 15 minutes. They made farming so EASY now. I am SO THANKFUL you never had to farm for Rubies and Gems in the older games, you could go for hours and get everything but what you need. and if you don't like the lock-on, you can forget about it all together because it has zero effect on the experience, even though you were using it incorrectly to begin with. Monster Hunter world has its fair share of flaws, but they made it so easy to enjoy and you downright ignored the games most important features and complained that it "wasn't fun because you had to slog through it" despite not actually taking the time to find out how everything legitimately worked. But, TO BE CLEAR HERE, DESPITE ALL THIS SHIT... It was still funny as fuck.

    I dont understand how someone who loves Souls Likes can hate so much on Monster Hunter. Like hating the same system on one game but praising it on another

  • @freewaytf
    @freewaytf 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Ranton.
    I love you my guy (no homo), but boi, you're really wrong about this game, and it does have its issues, but the ones you perceived as issues is just you being really, really, and I mean really bad at the game, which is completely normal for a newbie, monster hunter games are not for casual players that don't want to research and learn to play properly.
    I don't mean to by snarky with this comment, but almost everything you criticized just isn't true (besides the lock on which is a very underdeveloped feature because it's completely useless). MH games have a combat system that has evolved over decades now, and it's easily one of if not the most depthful in any game out there, each weapon's moveset is often richer than those of entire games. The weapon of your choice, dual blades, is often memed about because of how brainless and easy it is, as it's meant for new players who don't know how / want to learn the game and just mash buttons instead.
    And yes, melee attacks don't track, you can't steer them, you're commited to them once you start attacking, that's because you CAN'T button mash in this game, you have to start attacking and stop attacking at the right time.
    And most importantly, hunts are NOT meant to last 30+ minutes. An average player will be done with a hunt given appropriate equipment in less than 10 minutes, usually 5 if it's a single monster. Speedrunners kill monsters in less than a couple of minutes, even the late game ones. So basically, this game is really not for casual players like you, and all of your bad experience stem from the fact that you're bad at the game mechanically, but also arrogant in a way that cripples your mindset and prevents you from learning how the game works, and learning from your mistakes.
    MH titles are very much grindy games, but not in the way of gameplay, but in a general sense, since you'll be hunting each monster numerous times, and after watching other reviews of yours, you play for what are incredibly small amounts of hours compared to what's required to even start tasting the true charm of MHW, let alone understanding how to play.
    So to end this poem, your opinion is of one that barely dipped his toe in the water and got scared by how cold it is, it holds no true value as you're simply not invested enough in the game to even understand the basic mechanics. It's as if a guy that has never driven a car started giving driving tips and advice.

      my boi went full succo mode right there, ok, I will try to reply.
      I played MN:W and finished it and think that you have some fair points, I truly do, but I do have some disagreements here and there.
      first of all, ranton did research the enemies, he says that flat out in the video. You mentioned that the game has one of the deepest combat systems of games out there, which I will only reply with, allow me to introduce to my friend 'Dark Souls', oh have you met 'Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice''? this is my very lightweight tiny friend who is eventually gonna be kind of a big deal, and his name is 'STREET FIGHTER'
      Secondly, if the dual blades ARE designed for button-mashing, don't you see that as a problem? how anyone picks up that weapon and grind his way through the game? while the game is constantly patched and is getting content to this day, someone can have the same result like that one guy (who studied and mastered the game for years) just by mashing? my personal pick was the sword and shield (BCS I'm a dark souls whore), and when I found out that Its one of the best weapons in the game, my reaction was "wait a minute, the fighting styles aren’t balanced even though you unlock all of them at the beginning, and the game is still getting patched while the weapons STAY unbalanced, da fuq?"
      I just gound out that ranton already replied to this, he said and I quote:
      "I started to rush thru it at the 15-hour mark. Not trying to be objective at all😁 But I’m glad that u thought the review was entertaining at least and I appreciate your input 🙏"
      I agree to him heavily

    I generally really like your reviews, but I have to disagree in this one.
    1) I understand the auto aim feature is pretty shit, but it isn't really a feature that you use that much in the game in first place. So I don't think you should have put that much of focus on that point.
    2) I think that you really don't know how to play the game in the correct way so that's why you last so long on hunting a monster. I could easily notice that you don't sharpen your weapons (which is one of the most important things in a hunt) and the YT channel (boss fight data base) you looked up for the duration of the hunts is famous for uploading the slowest complete times. Usually hunts last between 15 and 25 mins , and once you have got used to the monster attack patterns you can easily do it at lower than 10 mins.
    I personally recommend you to watch other channels about mhw so you can learn how to play it and enjoy more the game.

      It's repetitive, grindy and boring.
      It's not for every one, only for a few who like this kind of mmo grind. It's braindead imo. But if you like mindless grind good for you, but I rather have a game with a story.

    I have to disagree with your point about monster fight times, fights should only take around 10 to fifteen minutes. The only time theu were usually longer was against arch dragons and tempered monsters. And even then those were only 20 to 25 minute long fights, and i cant help but notice that you are using the weakest weapons in the game against monsters, dealing only 15 damage or less a hit when a greatsword would be dealing 300

  • @lelouche25
    @lelouche25 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I forgot to say this back in the day, but you can beat an enemy in 10 minutes. You need proper equipment, and hit the right spots. Like I'm now at a point where I kill Rathians and Rathalos in 10 minutes time frame. But I understand why you felt that way at the time. You have to really put in the time on this game.

    "Monsters take forever to kill" uses completely blunt bone weapon, in the red and never sharpens them. Most of the "problems" you complained about are only so because you do not know how the game's mechanics works or put the time into learning them. I will admit though they don't exactly do a great job of explaining how shit works at times and the menus are indeed awful for those new to the franchise. What a lot of people enjoy about the game is fighting a monster again and again learning their attack patterns and getting better at hunting each one, improving both equipment and knowledge of how to fight each monster well, until you get to elder dragons where your skill and knowledge is truly tested.
    That said its certainly not for everyone, especially those that want instant gratification or cannot put the time into it. You have to be prepared to bring the right tools for the job and learn how the monster fights, you're never going to do well on any monster you fight for the first time, especially if your new to MonHun. It's not a game you an breeze through like Assasin's creed or other mianstream titles, its why the series has survived for so long and was such a cult hit. I enjoy your content, its fun and silly, but stuff like this is why will never take your reviews very seriously, you hand out 7/10s willy nilly, then give MH a 4/10.
    Honestly I think your stuff doesn't need any a review score at the end and is worse off with one, often times it invalidates the things you say good or bad. If you're not going to use the scoring system properly, don't use it at all.

    Combat is desinged to be free roam so you can time perfect Hits on Specific Parts and not a singel Moster took me more then 10 - 15 minutes the Game is not a Dark Souls or a Devil my Cry you need space too evade charge up Attacks ect. All the problems your having are only problems that your making for your self by not adapting and learning how to play.
    You fight without Sharpend Wepons don't use Environment or Traps probably also don't wear Armor to Counter Monsters or Boost Damage but Complain the Combat is Bad because your Bad but thats not how it works.

    Man your editing and humor are both amazing! Thumbs up for that alone :-) (also the RotW refecence near the end)
    It's ok to not understand the game the first time around, it was just the same for me, my first experience felt like shit, the learning curve was too obtuse, there were too many mechanics and even less tutorials - it only "clicked" for me on my second attempt years later with a sequel. I'm sure you've read through plenty of autism in the comments so I won't add to any of that, my one and only non-opinionated correction is that you didn't beat the game, you actually reached the half-way point (finished low-rank, after that comes high-rank with new monsters and maps). Not every game is for everyone and that's understandable.
    Anyway with this quality I'm sure your channel will blow up in no time!
