Somebody did some serious research while making this film. The Spitfire could in fact out-dive the 109, so that was the go-to evasion technique for Commonwealth fliers trying to shake a German pursuer. Thus the dramatic plunge the British pilot takes here is historically accurate. (109s could out-climb Spits though, so that was the ploy Messerschmitt pilots used when the shoe was on the other foot.) Great film!
Hey man love that you know all this cool stuff. I had a question, is there is mechanical system put in place to make sure the bullets don't hit the propellor?
@@Kuhn3y All fighters since mid-WWI that had machine guns firing through the prop had that. It was invented by a Dutch engineer (Anthony Fokker) working for the Germans. Interestingly, Fokker's design just used the prop to trigger the gun in the first place; the firing mechanism is linked to the shaft so it's the turning of the prop itself that fires the gun, meaning you can just set it to fire when no blade is in front, rather than trying to design a device that interrupts the gun when a blade is in front. Sometimes the difficulty is more how you're thinking about the problem, than the actual outcome you're looking for.
Im surprised not many people talked about the ending shots where the blood forma into the different parts of humanity’s bloody history from the first man killing the other with fists, to the Spartans, the crusades with the templars and the arabs or Saladeen’s army, the Japanese imperial army soldier putting on his bandana of the red sun, etc. It just hits in a way along with the main animation before the ending credits. My grandfather was a bomber pilot in the second world war. He flew an Avro Lancaster for the Canadian Air Force at 19 years of age. He survived but passed when I was young, so unfortunately, I didn't get to know him or the things he went through in his life, especially that young. This video really hits close to home. The characters could have been tank commanders, or ground troops, or naval captains, but there's something about the isolation of a flying box, far from home, that really makes you understand just what it means to have everything you hold dear stripped from you, only to be left with bitterness and evil. In the end, these two men weren't fighting for their families, their gods, or their countries. They were fighting because they wanted to see the other man dead.
I do have the disturbing impression that the pilot of the Spitfire is a female !! Could it be so in the sense that the director of this anime intended not so much illustrating a WW2 conventional "dogfight" than showing an allegorical tragedy about a love story between man and woman driven to a bitter and lethal end ?..
I adore the symbolism in the picture of the pilots wife flying out of the cockpit, along with the cross breaking from the rosary, which shows how the pilots lost both love and faith, leaving only hate for the other. Bravo! Edit: thank you to the replies informing me that the bracelet is a rosary!
A perfect display for hate being nothing but fuel. Hate can be so strong that you are suddenly able to do things you would never have imagined before. Never say "I would never kill someone!" before you know what hate really means. Both pilots might have been husbands, fathers, yet their hate grew so strong that they just wanted to destroy each other at all costs. Hate is one of the most primal feelings, yet it will never get old or oudated. It will stick with us forever.
This film was an emotional gut punch. I should have known with a title like "Paths of Hate" that it wouldn't have a happy ending, but watching these men transform into literal monsters affected me more than I could have imagined. Incredible details and so beautifully animated, it tells so much story without any words.
Better watch the movie "go and see".Or films about Auschwitz or Buchenwald.Maybe this will be a blow to you below the belt. And you will understand that people can be the most terrible creatures.

Unfortunately, it seems that a lot of people misunderstand the meaning of this beautiful short movie. It is not about pilots, soldiers or war, it is about hatred. About deep hatred that consumes people's minds and makes them commit horrible things. In such a state, people forget about those who they love, about their faith, about everything. Hatred makes them sacrifice everything to destroy what they hate, but eventually they also destroy themselves.
IMHO this short film has the same problem as, say, the Mobile Suit Gundam anime franchise. Both are fundamentally about the inhumanity of war ... but this message gets muddled because the battle scenes are just too damn cool.
But the hate our species couldn't give up back in 1944 led to the hate we can't give up in 2020. Which will lead to the hate we can't give up in 2060 or 2110 or 2449...
I can't believe my eyes. This is amazing. 10 min short animation movie that has more artistic value than a billion dollar TV series running for tens of hours. Just amazing.
They were equal They hated each other They were rivals They were incomplete without the other one In this endless circle of hatred They were soulmates Horrifying and disturbing But at the same time Beautiful and poetic Those lines in the sky was just like they were making a death dance They both left love and faith only leaving hate for each other Like nothing else could matter because they were born to live this moment
I think this statement is silly (regarding soulmates). Hate is something that is created by war and does not pre exist. And war is not something we ordinary people choose
I literally had to go back and look. There was a nod at 515 to shake her picture away. That is how deep hatred took him, and the creator nailed it. Yeah, it did me too.
A perfect representation of man's will to never give up- and to always kill the enemy. It's haunting, brutal, and accurate. Well done, animators and storytellers, I have watched this many times. Great work.
A strangely positive-sounding interpretation, given they destroy themselves and each other in an ultimately futile exchange driven by consuming hatred.
This animation is a masterpiece. The two pilots fighting it out till their last bullet and showing no mercy to each other. Because of the rage and constant fighting, has made them completely blind about the fact that they are not coming back home. Bullets drained, low fuel, their planes being torn to bits, and not caring about themselves shows how much hatred they have on each other. They both ran out of bullets and they decide to give up. They finally realized that they are not going to make it back home. One lost his wife, the other lost his cross, they are both extremely low on fuel, and their plane conditions will not hold up for long all…they have no faith nor hope. And the two completely snap, the hatred takes over, and they want to kill each other so badly because the two think that the other ruined them, even though their hatred towards each other had ruined them both. So they try to finish the fight no matter what.
Perfect depiction of the duality of man. Once you get your tongue wet with combat it cant hardly ever be sated. I did 2 tours in iraq and afghanistan and saw many friends could not function in normal society after being high on combat for years at a time. It is a scary thing whats inside of men that dont know how to turn it off. Even the ones that can turn it off are hardly the same after seeing true actual combat. Combat has been the prefered past time of man since the beginning. Anyway, a great animation and i heap praise upon you.

This video shows how human we all are...we can shoot at each other until we our out of ammo, until our planes are barely flying, and still have some sense of humanity... A masterpiece of animation, very original. I saw it years ago for the first time and was awestruck at the ability to capture the mood and feel of this epic dogfight, created from all the little random snippets of a scene which comprise an event and sewn together with the hatred and blind rage of the human mind, be it right or wrong it just is. Thats humans for you. The little details, the glass in the air, the spinning ammo counters, the damaged and fluttering flight surfaces, the frantic striving to be the one to get that lucky shot in - and then a moment of silence. Wow i still reckon this rocks great work!

This animation Perfectly represents the changing of man, and reason for war, It starts off as something you fight for, something you believe in, and your fighting for "someone else", Fighting to ensure the safety of another's. There is purpose and reason to show the good in what you believe in, and what your fighting for, but slowly, over time, the war grabs hole, Reality as you know it crumbles as it does, so the your reason, your will and outlooks change, and over time you find yourself fighting a war, that's not so reasonable, not so much good in, and not much value to you... or another before you, that you once fought for, You find yourself now, fighting for yourself, Your goals, and those goals, seem to have no benefit to the ones you fought to protect... but rather, To only apes yourself, Selfishness takes over, and you fighting a war, you have no need in fighting anymore. instead of turning back... leaving in peace... You push harder... and the old war ends. as your new one branches off... and begins... It's quiet beautiful. No words said... no dialogue... just fighting... and emotions portrayed through fighting... Amazing animation, Loved every second of it!

I love this animation, it’s cool and fun to watch but also hints that war brings out man’s inner demons in the form of hatred and rage. They’ve always been there, they’ve just been waiting for the right time to emerge. And there’s no better time to emerge than war (hell on earth so to speak), and in this case it was World War 2. Furthermore, the animation shows that these demons of hate inside of us are self destructive and harm the things and people we care about (one pilot doesn’t care that his wife’s photo flies out into the air and the other breaks his prayer bead, both symbolic of them neglecting the things and people they care about out of pure, blinding rage). Anyways, I’m reading to deep into this and I’m starting to sound edgy, I’m just glad you shared this stunning work of 3D art with all of us viewers :)

It will stick with us forever.
the fact that their hate got so intense that the only way you could tell them apart in the end was by the gun they were carrying is insane
I think this could be the message that they are trying to deliver. That in the end, hatred makes all equal, regardless of their beliefs.
I don't think it's hate.

This film was an emotional gut punch. I should have known with a title like "Paths of Hate" that it wouldn't have a happy ending, but watching these men transform into literal monsters affected me more than I could have imagined. Incredible details and so beautifully animated, it tells so much story without any words.
The key is to know the monster is within and to use the monster to benefit you
Better watch the movie "go and see".Or films about Auschwitz or Buchenwald.Maybe this will be a blow to you below the belt.

No. It's about the hatred instilled in them. They are told who to hate and who to kill by the people who created them. It's absolutely about war.
IMHO this short film has the same problem as, say, the Mobile Suit Gundam anime franchise. Both are fundamentally about the inhumanity of war ... but this message gets muddled because the battle scenes are just too damn cool.

It's when both the pilots realize that their little pieces of home they have with them were destroyed...the Brit's picture of his girl, and the German's piece of jewelry around his wrists...its like the two of them realize the only thing holding them together was gone...
That's when the true monster comes out
I watched it when it came out, and I watched it again 5 years later. It's honestly quite incredibly well the planes were portrayed and how the animation was insane.
As the pilots battled while they crumbled, I wondered, "What the hell?" Then I thought my question answered itself. This film is gripping, compelling, and made me think. And the animation that made all that happen--it's amazing!

The feeling I'm staying with is like it was the 19th century, I'd just seen a magician doing a trick on stage and I'll keep a single idea repeating in my head: "How did they do it, how they did it?🤯
Man everytime I see this video it almost makes me want to cry just by noticing how rage can take you over and sometimes it isn’t for the best even though they had no choice towards the end considering they were both going down anyway
I typed “WW2 dogfight” on the search bar and I wasn’t disappointed. Incredible animation. Well done!
I'm here because of Gunship. The closing outro just adds one more level of mastery to an animation I had already admired greatly!
The meaning this is so sophisticated I love it the way they slowly lose all ideas of hope and love as hatred takes over and not to mention the animation is impeccable
I rewatch this animation twice a year, whenever it pops in my feed. It is so well done. I would love a Combat Flight Simulator with this aesthetic
Better than netflix
This scene is best described in the words of Manfred von Richthofen “Fight on and fly on to the last drop of blood and the last drop of fuel,to the last beat of the heart”.
And there in lies the futility of war. What’s left when everyone’s dead.
Finally a short with a actual plot and a satisfying ending. Kudos!
Okay, Google is officially reading my mind. I woke up this morning thinking about this short and how I wanted to see it again but couldn't recall its name. Here it is on my home page w/o doing a single search. The animation in this is addictive!
I know of this film because of the band Gunship.
This is an awesome film.
So the moral of the story is: Always carry more fuel and ammo than the other guy.
The best animation I have ever watched, it was mind-blowing. To see how animators draw to perfection emotions, it's amazing. And for that I thank you and you have all my respect.
This is legit the best animation i have ever seen on youtube, i cant even describe how good it is.
