Mike Judge found massive success with his "Beavis and Butt-Head" TV series, but the transition to live-action proved far more difficult. After the box office failure of OFFICE SPACE in 1999, Judge's next effort IDIOCRACY fared even worse in 2006, with the studio practically burying his movie. But in the years since, the social satire found a cult following and became part of the pop culture landscape with its depiction of a moronic future. It needs a re-release in theaters so people can see themselves today. I saw it in theaters and my two friends thought the movie was so awful they wanted me to reimburse them for the tickets. a few years later they realized the movie wasn't bad but just ahead of its time.
Idiocracy has always been a litmus test for my friendship with other people. If you don’t like that film, we won’t get along.

I remember my wife and I looking for a bad movie in DVD at Circuit City and she found Idiocracy, we really thought it was going to be bad but we ended up loving it and recommending it to everyone we knew.
I can’t remember how many times I have watched it but I can still watch it and still laugh my ass off!!

Any particular highlight you'd care to share?
Even at half your age, I can see the same writing on the wall. I remember seeing this movie when it came out. I bought it and I made all my friends at least watch that opening monologue. Most found it funny. I found it horrifying. The scariest part is I figured the future it depicted was still a good 50 to 75 years away. Now, just a decade and a half later, so much of it really has already come to pass, but the rest I have realized will be something I will likely live to see myself rather than it being the world of my descendants.
It wasn't a prophecy. It was the game plan.

I honestly didn't even know this movie existed for the longest time, until it was mentioned in a book I was reading. So I asked a few people about, found out it actually existed and watched and LOVED it.

It's pretty daft to label all countries that have vaguely the same poltitical system as all being the same anyway. Albeit there are a huge number...5 communist countries - China, Vietnam, Laos, Cube & North Korea(which is really it's own thing, more akin to a cult at the political level). The much more extreme North Korea & Cuba are doing the worst, Laos is so-so but seemingly improving, while China & Vietnam are booming economically - and are both highly capitalist as well as communist anyway

I was blown away by Mike's view of the future already seeing how rabid nationalism became after 9/11, I was scared we were at the cusp of what his movie was about and just 15 years later...we have arrived to idiocracy.

Mike Judge and Greg Garcia tend to make properties that are pretty great. I always look forward to whenever they make something new because there's a much higher-than-average chance that it'll be good.

I dunno. Beavis and Butthead were a very big deal when they came out. Office Space has one of the biggest cult followings, everybody quotes King of the Hill. I wouldn’t say he’s underrated, he’s rated about where he should be. He’s never gonna be treated like Scorsese or Ridley Scott, Kubrick or James Cameron..he’s very different.
This is the best documentary ever created...
It was just a documentary about our future. And so far, this is 100% on track. I thought it was going to be later, but this is coming to a reality faster and faster.
LOVE THIS! This history of Judge and his work, shows how hanging in there with ideas, and just doing it is the thing to do. and there IS an audience for those funny ideas we all have. AND in the end this movie will go bigger than the studio powers ever thought.

The timeline made sense in the movie. The premise was people were getting dumber out of biological evolution (stupid people having more children than smart ones), and evolution is slow and takes many generations. We are getting stupider out of technology and cultural (de)evolution, which are much much faster than biology, and accelerating as we speak, unfortunately
It went from fictional comedy to fact in less than 20 minutes. I watch this a lot and it's the closest dam thing to America we'll ever get in 30 to 50 years..

The worst part about "Idiocracy" is how painfully accurate it is despite being meant as a satire and comedy. Mike Judge deserves a lot more praise for his keen observation skills. "Office Space" truly nailed it too.

We had the exact model of printer at a place I used to work, and it was just as unreliable as the one in Office Space.
It even had the "LP Load Letter" error message.
Later, when I watched the film, I took great satisfaction from the execution sequence.

Idiocracy was and still is the most frightening movie I have ever seen.

'm watching this movie in 2023 and everything in the movie is going to become the reality. This movie came out in 2006, so it's far more advance. I can 100% confirm almost everything shown in the movie has already become our reality in 2023

The first 5 minutes of Idiocracy are a scary and brutally honest look at reality.
Can confirm. I'll be 33 in a few days. My ex wanted a kid but I didn't. I told her the world was just too weird. It hasn't gotten better and I don't think I will be having any kids. But no worries. 6 of the houses around me have like 5 or 6 kids each. They had plenty for the whole neighborhood!

The astronomical mathematics that go into the probabilities of my ever having existed at all are staggering. But I am not a rich person. I can barely afford to feed myself some days. Why would I subject a kid to this? In the end my ex left me for another woman anyway. So she isn't going to be having a baby there lol. But I am still looking into the "old snip" asap. I made my teenage children sit down and watch this with me a few years ago. It turned into an all time favorite of theirs. Years later we still crack each other up with quotes from the movie and are amazed at how real it's becoming..

The studio ignored it (hoping it would go away) because it was and is too real. The system does not want anything thought provoking.

Especially when the US President Trump was seen doing pro wrestling videos.
It was too scary to be shown because it was so close to what the models predicted. It scared me when I watched it in 2021 way more than saw, the ring or any of those more traditional horror movies.

I now feel so prescient. I saw both "Office Space" and "Idiocracy," in a movie theater, during their initial releases. I had no idea how poorly the studio handled the two films. Perhaps the management at the studio recognized themselves and their families, in the characters, in both films.
Office Space was available to gen-X on IRC, so our generation (I'm 49) did see it. But then gen-X was a babybust so that meant fewer ticketsales as opposed to the kids and the boomers.
Idiocracy was *also* mentioned in these circles but, in this case, it wasn't even released to many theatres. I had to drive from west Houston all the way to Baytown to catch a screening and, after like ten days, it wasn't being played even there.
I saw "Office space" because of the ads on comedy channel and I knew it would be good. But Idiocracy I never knew existed until it was on cable.
Extremely plausible scenario.
Mike Judge is just awesome. King of the hill and idiocracy are two of my faves.

Man, props to Mike Judge for persevering as the underdog. I'm sure glad he did.
Mike Judge is a shining example of making what people in the face of corporate studios trying to shoot down the project.
I remember before this film came out, Newsweek did an article on it. One if the things mentioned in the article was that in the first draft of the film, the original reason why people became idiots was due to the education system in the US.
Specifically, teachers no longer graded on what is considered "correct/incorrect", rather students were told if they "felt something was right, then it was". The example used was "as long as Timmy believes 2+2=5, then that's okay because we don't want to hurt his feelings."
This was cut from the film because test audiences didn't think poling fun of teachers was okay.
As a teacher, I wasn't offended by that at all.
They should've kept that in; it'd make the film even more prescient.

in 2006, I could understand the argument that it was needlessly insulting to teachers. Today, it's more real than they ever could have predicted.

What happened? It started as a comedy. It has evolved into a prophecy. In a few years it will be a historical documentary.
This movie is pure genius and Terry Crews's President Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho is utter genius.

One of my son's friends stormed out of the house while we watched Idiocracy. He said it was so realistic he just couldn't stand to watch.
"Judge turned to his Director of Photography, and pondered why they were even bothering to make 'Idiocracy', when they could just release this," lol. More confirmation it was coming true right before his eyes.
I feel fortunate that I happened to catch it on DVD as a rental in the late 2000s. I don't think I thought at the time, "This is coming true around me," but my goodness, I've thought of this movie a lot since then.
The scene I remember I absolutely loved (still do. It made me laugh so hard) is when Joe is in the White House, discussing why they should use water on plants. I recognized the cognitive dissonance. I had had so many frustrating discussions with people that sounded just like that, "But Brawndo's got what plants crave..." Ugh! It's not the corporate fascism in the movie that I'm talking about. It was really how people can fall in love with some idea, not be able to see anything outside of it, and fight to the death to not consider anything else ("You mean out of a toilet??").
I remember having an argument with a friend I lost in 08' about how I thought this movie was prophetic. Aside from missing my friend I wish he was around to see what he would say now.

I saw this in theaters since I loved everything Mike Judge made. I've still got Idiocracy on DVD and i still watch it every few years and cry at how accurate it was/is.....
