Large Leaf/Feather Tutorial: • DIY Macrame Tutorial: ...
Hey guys! I have a really fun tutorial for you today that will teach you how to create colourful macrame feathers/leaves. This is the perfect craft for kids as it only uses one knot, the overhand knot, and there is little prep work involved. This method can also be used to create colourful feathers to attach to your wall hanging. When finished each feather/leaf will measure approx. 6.5 inches in length and 4.5 inches in width. Let’s get started.
I’m going to show you a few variations - a rainbow variation and a couple of variations with two colours.
For each leaf/feather, cut one piece of string that is 20 inches in length to use for the spine and 16 pieces of string that are approx. 6 inches in length. To create the rainbow cut 2 pieces of each colour: blush, burgundy, red, mustard, yellow, green, teal, and blue.
Fold the 20 inch piece of string in half and tie an overhand knot. Attach all 16 pieces of string to the spine of the feather by bringing the string underneath the spine and tying an overhand knot. Here’s what it looks like from the front. Tie an overhand knot with the two middle cords.
Trim the edges. Feel free to keep it as it or you can brush out the sides withe a comb or pet brush. To make a leaf I like keep it a bit thicker and shorter, to make a feather I will cut it a bit thinner and keep it a bit longer. Trim the edges one more time.
To make the variations with two colours you will need the same amount of cord as the last variation. Cut one piece of string that is 20 inches in length to use for the spine and 16 pieces of string that are approx. 6 inches in length. To make the natural/taupe feather on the left cut 8 pieces in one colour and 8 pieces in the other. To make the striped variation as seen on the right cut 10 pieces in one colour and 6 pieces in another colour. Attach the pieces to the spine in this sequence - 6 of colour A, 6 of colour B, 4 of colour A.
Follow the same process as the first leaf/feather to create this one.
    Thanks for watching!
