VW - Removing Crankshaft Gear

Bill wanted to show me a new tool he had over at Don's garage used to remove a crankshaft/cam gear from a VW Type-4 (or Type-1) crankshaft.

I remember him. I bought some parts from him 8 years ago(?). Very knowledgeable guy. I wish he could have opened up my type 4 heads(1700 to 18/2000). He had a lot of cars and buses.

Hi and thanks so much! Long way to Australia! Wild Bill and I both wish we had that shop, it actually belongs to Don. We are glad he likes us. I'd like to have a place like that myself, perhaps with the entire upstairs as living space. Guess I'll keep dreaming for now. :-D
Man, the type 4 bottom end is way more massive than the type1, those rods are stout! The weak link on the type 4 was in the heads, they love to drop valve seats. Cool vid man, keep them coming!
Yes, the heads were weak on the Type4 because in a Bus they were prone to overheating while pushing a giant loaf of bread at highway speeds... this was especially true of the 2L heads. Not so many problems for the people that put a Type 4 engine into a smaller Volkswagen. :)

Is there any timing marks on the crank it self when you install the cam gear and distributor gear
Yes, both are keyed, hard to get wrong. The timing mark on the cam gear faces out. The brass gear doesn't matter. How you install the distributor gear drive is what affects the timing. :) Hope that helps!

1.8L heads an upgrade to the 2.0L heads ....Yaaaaaaaa sure!!
Actually they are lol... the valves are bigger. Look it up!

Not all your thumbnails. Just the ones where you alter your face. For some reason I find them incredibly annoying.
