i love the boss katana 50 got it used for quite cheap but i didnt start to appreciate it fully until i started messing around with the tone studio for a while, it has many options and yes it is abit of a learning curve but it can be worth the investmnent in the long end, you can also mess around with other peoples patches if its too hard to dial in something, you can use pedals for it at the front if thats your thing.
id personally say stick with the katana for now.

So you've just discovered why the Katana is so well thought of. Never tried one myself, but the only real way to judge an amp is playing back to back with another.
Anyway, forgive me for saying so, Rich, but I think you're heading down the wrong track here. Not the Katana, but amps in general. I think you should get yourself one simple, classic, analogue amp, and then learn to get the tones you want from / through it. The digital / modelling amps give you too many options, too easy to get distracted from core fundamentals. You could buy a simple valve amp, just something in the 5 - 15 watt range, or an old "solid state" amp. The rest comes from the guitar volume & tone knobs and your fingers. Example, I recently picked up a Peavey Studio 112 ("Red Stripe") for £60. 20 years old, sounds fantastic, most of the time I just leave it on the clean channel with a bit of reverb.
The guitar heroes of the past didn't have all these fancy digital features in their amps!

You say the Blackstar is better but now you’ve sold it. Hearing a id10v2 and the katana I like the depth of the katana more. The id sounded great though. Both a gig. Not sure how the id40 compares and still not sure which I should buy. It being my first guitar but something I never want to part out until I die. A cheap upgraded Strat. Love the weight of the id40 compared to the katana if you need to go onroad, but like the handle of the katana. It’s all circles and roundabouts

I’ve not got the V4 version ID Core 40 it’s amazing! Way better this older version, far more bass, a 1 watt mode, better presets, it’s great. Sold my 60 watt LINE 6 Catalyst for it with no regrets at all.

All that gear. I haven’t struck a note for 30 years. Just starting to prepare for when I find a nice 45mm body alder rosewood fretboard Strat. I bought a rechargeable mini Bluetooth amp, an iPhone to aux cable and a Bluetooth jack. A set of picks. Just need an amp or 2. 1 semi portable to play at my friends house and something good enough to play out out. I accept hand me downs you know 😊. Those katana mini/blackstar fly 3 look good. Or everyone keeps raving about the orange to play at their parents house. I don’t know. Anyway, love the content. Keep it up.

Katana, hands down. There's a learning curve to getting the best out any of these amps with built in effects. A few minutes in the software and a few minutes on the top panel barely scratches the surface. Now that said, for a 100 quid that blackstar is a bargain - why not keep both?
If you ever get together with a few, mates, maybe a novice bass player and drummer, the katana will doo the job but the blackstar won't. They are a bit naughty calku g it a 40w amp, it's actually 20 w per channel and those speakers are tiny. May sound good in your living room but won't cut it in a live mix.

@@thenovicenoisemaker A good tip someone gave me, whether it's an amp with built in effects or a multi effects unit, get a handful of basic useable sounds that you like and forget the rest. Personally I have a clean, edge of break up, a high gain (but not filthy), an acoustic sim and a bass sim for when I'm playing with my high priced under used looper 😀. For what I've seen you doing the first 3 is prob gonna cover 95% of your needs. If there's specific songs you need something different for then take it as it comes e.g. If you wanted a dotted 1/8th note delay for a U2 song.
