    what i loved is how they pulled off a party for a character who died (Wes) and it kinda felt like a farewell to Wes Craven they took their shots up and shouted "to Wes" in one scene. I think it was a brilliant way of honouring Wes Craven.

      Matthew and Skeet were damn perfect in the first movie.
      Going from goofbal, or lovesick horny teenagers, to psychotic killers so effortlessly.
      I mean the scene with Stu, Billy, and Randy in the movie store.
      If you watch it from the viewpoint Billy is actually innocent or guilty how he talks to Randy works either way.
      I mean one of friends accusing you that you just tried to kill your girlfriend?
      That's got to hurt, and I would probably lash out accuse him back.
      Then Stu goes with being a good best friend or accomplice...

    I have to disagree about the comedy. The original Scream, often called a “parody” in the years since, is actually played fairly straight. It does have laughs, for sure, but nothing to compromise the integrity of the horror elements. If anything, parts 3 and 4 leaned too heavily into self-parody for my taste. This new one struck a really nice balance.

    • @alexanderm2888
      @alexanderm2888 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      agreed - 3 and 4 crossed into silly territory and i dont think it always worked - maybe looking back now it isnt as bad...but 3 is a circus and the tone of 4 is a bit messy (and i also cant get over how bad it looks - it looks so cheap and like a 2000s CW show)

    • @andriottijunior
      @andriottijunior 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@alexanderm2888 3rd movie was crap, even though there are some few good thrilling sequences (I like the opening). Seems that screenplay was awful and Wes had to constantly change things while filming because they didn't have time to rewrite. Craven himself agreed that 3rd movie ended up not being as he expected and really felt that he let fans down and frustrated. The idea for the 4th movie was to compensate that mistake, and both Craven and Williamson kind of did it at the time pretty well. But as any single movie of the franchise, it aged badly. But I remember having a great time watching it for the 1st time and still one of my favorites when I ignore that fact.

    • @PittsburghSportsFan43
      @PittsburghSportsFan43 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@alexanderm2888 They toned down the horror elements in 3 for a reason. The Columbine high school shooting that happened while that was filming. It was also completely rewritten because of that.

    “Mellissa Borrera was phenomenal” ??? Did we watch the same movie? I felt like every single one of her lines was delivered so flat, and she didn’t really have any emotion besides the forced emotional points like her seeing her sister. Even then I didn’t feel much for her? Jenna Ortega did much better imo, I just felt everyone but Borrera was more interesting even with less character development only due to the way they acted. Could be just me though.

    This movie was bad. Sidney had what? 10 mins of screen time. The group of friends were insufferable, they were all acting so callous just casually talking about death meanwhile their close friend was just viciously attacked within an inch of her life, the stakes felt so low, like the characters werent behaving like normal people just script props. Lastly the killers identities were so dumb, there was no real twist as the characters were so irrelevant to the main plot. This overall didnt feel like a Scream movie. *edit* omg and the whole hallucination subplot was beyond the valley of the dolls stupid.

    I finally saw this last night. Having seen all of the Scream movies, this is probably my third or fourth favorite. Still can't decide if it edges out Scream 4, which I quite liked. Everything you said about it pretty much rang true to me - an homage to Wes Craven, not quite as funny or tightly paced as his versions, but very good all the same. I wasn't that impressed with Melissa Barrera until the very end. Up until that point she was just kind of blank faced and almost distractingly beautiful. But man, she comes through in a pinch in that extremely violent scene near the end. Overall, thumbs up!

      Its the 4th favorite for me. I think Scream 4 was better. So its 1,2,4,5,3 for me. There is some good stuff here. The cast is really good. The new actors are good. But the oldies are also used really well. They have a role but at the same time they do not overshadow the new cast members. Also the runtime is used well. The movie never quite stalls. Once the story begins it progresses at brisk pace and leads to a satisfying if not a memorable climax.
      There are a few issues with Scream. Its probably a little too self aware. You are constantly getting reminded about the Scream franchise, its old characters, and horror movie tropes. Any slasher movie should have 2 main themes or concept ? Who's next and who's the killer ? While you do wonder about who's the killer the important concept of who's next never gets a chance but of all the references. The references are fine but if they diminish the suspense, then you have not used them well.
      Also the motivation of the killers and all the reveals and the links at the end definitely feels contrived. Its a little too convenient. There should have been a stronger logic especially when the movie was making such a strong critique or commentary on Hollywood horror franchises.
      I liked Scream 5 but definitely not as much I had hoped. A good cast, especially the young and old leads, and a well paced narrative make it enjoyable. I give it a 6.5 and the strong links to the original have added to the ratings. As a standalone movie its probably an above average slasher. A better writing effort was required.

    I enjoyed Scream 5, for the most part. I don't care that it's just called Scream, it's Scream 5. They bring a bunch of original people back, and acknowledge the franchise history.
    Dewey's death was sad, but I figured going in that one of the original 3 were going to die, and he was the most likely IMO.
    I liked Sidney and Gale taking on Amber in the kitchen at the end. And how that ended up.
    I did not like that that didn't kill Amber and what's her name did. Sam's sister. It felt like they threw it in there just for one last twist. And it honestly cheapened Gale's moment.
    I didn't like that Sam's sister survived the opening. Or that Sam's boyfriend was basically a Billy redo. I figured right away that he was one of the killers, even when they tried to make it look like he wasn't.
    It took me seeing it twice to learn the second killer's name. You know how Sidney looks really confused in Scream 3 when Roman's outed as the bad guy? Like she's thinking "Who the hell are you?" That was me with the Amber reveal. They really foreshadowed it with that scene with Randy's niece though. I caught that the second time I watched it. Randy's niece and nephew I didn't mind because it was revealed Randy had a sister in Scream 3, and Martha did have a scene in this, so it wasn't as out of nowhere as Billy's daughter.
    And how in the hell did Billy have a kid? As far as we know the only person he ever slept with was Sidney. Given that he was a serial killer, it wouldn't be a surprise if he cheated on Sidney too, but give us a little hint. Like have Sam mention her mom's name around Sidney and have Sidney comment that she went to school with her or something. Not just have Sidney blurt out that Sam is Billy's daughter 2 seconds after they meet. It felt like they were trying too hard to connect Sam to the original cast. I didn't really mind ghost Billy or whatever that was supposed to be either, but wouldn't him haunting Sidney make more sense? Especially if it happened in the Macher house, where Sidney killed Billy and she hasn't been back to since 1996?

    Something i noticed in the opening scene: its obvious that there are 3 killers, amber in the video call who brushes her hair, the one that holds the phone and shows his knife and the one who attacks tara in her house! And i think the 3rd killer who we will watch in the next chapter, is the girl twin, who "survived" at the very end. One thing i didn't get was how Sam's boyfriend (one of the killers) went from California Modesto to woodsboro and back, so quickly! That says there's maybe a forth killer, so in scream 6 we will see the other two. Remember the theories about multiple killers, before the movie opening at the theatres.

Craven died in 2015, he may have wanted to give his characters a closure like this if he had been alive. Guess we'll never know... Scream 5 is the most gruesome and explicit on screen, the most violent, which doesn't surprise me because horror nowadays is way bloodier than 25 years ago. I liked it. A solid 4🌟. I saw this at a press screening on Tuesday and thought it was pretty smart. The first Scream was great but for me after that Craven had issues as well. The original was fun but also very dark at the end...the second one was a huge disappointment for me when it came out, just because that one really felt long for me, it didn´t have enough tension and the reveal/motives were pretty weak. Not a bad movie but in comparison to the first a step down. Part 3 had an interesting concept but was very lame in execution and again, weak reveal and in my eyes the worst of the 5. Part 4 was just solid without too many surprises. You´re right that the directors very much mimic the style of the other sequels which made sense although I really love Ready or Not and thought maybe they brought some of that's visuals into it too. What was best of Part 5 is that it had really tense moments that were missing in Parts 2 to 4...take the hospital scene! And I loved how long the movie tricked the audience about a possible motive for the killer/s...there were so many characters with references to the franchise and you always thought you knew just before the character was taken away. That said, the reveal/motive for me was the smartest one after the original. For me: Clearly behind the first but on par with 2 and 4, maybe even better.

    • @5DollarGaming
      @5DollarGaming 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I always feel like I'm missing something when so many consider Scream 2 to be the best of the sequels. I always found it quite dull and felt it didn't know how to build on the whole meta narrative thing. Scream 3 almost did but it also was exceptionally stupid and oozed late 90s cheese in a not good way. The fourth definitely has its issues but also felt it was actually the best to recapture the originals spirit while introducing new elements. This one just might have surpassed 4 for me. Gonna let it sit cause I'm still riding high off that first watch but, like you said, it did feel like it had stakes and tension that I just didn't feel in any of the sequels. Plus the meta commentary was a blast.
      One thing I love about the Scream franchise is that it acts as a really good sort of end of the decade snapshot of where horror is at at that point in time. Even though I'd be happy if they ended the saga here, if they want to come back in 5 to 10 years and just check back in on the horror genre, I'm totally for it.

      As a long time Scream fan too, I had high hopes. Couldn't contain my excitement. I left satisfied as hell. I'm with you, the first is the best, it cannot really be touched. The second one I like, but the motives are weak at the end, reveal kind of lame. 3rd one has that setting which is perfect but the execution is piss. The fourth is currently my 2nd favorite, it has that same feeling the first movie gave off while also having a wonderful reveal and motive. This movie also for me had wonderful moments. The reveal in the beginning about not killing the first girl, the tense mother/son killing actually brought me to tears when she was begging for her sons life. The hospital scene and the "my honor" line. The motives were great and honestly for me, the most meta the franchise has ever gotten, them explain how they want to do justice to the franchise and essentially just being fans of the movies. Just absolutely perfect. It gave them time to shine and show there crazy side. The only thing, and I want to rewatch it but once they get to the house at the end, it felt like it went by too quick. They should have had another kill or two before the party dispersed and Sydney and Gale showed up. Otherwise, loved it.

    I think the problem of how to bridge the Legacy Characters with The New Crew was easily solvable in Scream 4. Have Sidney's fate be up to the audience-did she survive or not? Then pass the torch to Kirby for the next trilogy. Audiences FELL IN LOVE with Kirby and still rave about her today. She'd have been the perfect choice to bridge that gap. Sidney and Gale (sorry but I think Dewey STRAIGHT UP DIES here) are slowly being phased out, so they need to make sure the new crew are as likeable as Sidney Prescott and her crew were. I think one of these movies should leave the killer alive, but in prison. And have the hero team up with the killer to snag the other two killers. It would be SUCH a good cat and mouse game and you wouldn't be able to trust LITERALLY anyone. EVERYBODY'S A SUSPECT after all.

    Credit to it for trying to do for this decade what 4 did for the last one. It was fun, and nostalgic and ticked all the boxes I wanted it to tick. And while I wouldn't demand that any sequel be as good as the original, I still prefer 4 to this one. I think the pacing of this film felt off: I think I started to become invested when Dewey entered the scene and then again when Gale and Sidney showed up. The final act did feel a little frenzy and some of Sam's dialogue felt super forced. Jenna Ortega and Jasmin Savoy Brown were the best performances of the film though.

    I couldn't help but feel disappointed by the end. It played too safe for me. Yes, Dewy did die, but idk thats not enough for me. As I was walking out of the theater I realized something... how about for once we have Ghostface actually win for a change? Like even have the main character be the killer but the audience doesn't know it. Have it be a character study film and have the audience care, relate, and sympathize with him/her. And when it's revealed they're the killer, it's shocking because you'd never expect it and we cared for him/her. And they actually win! Idk, I think it'd be a nice change of pace and could be very interesting if done right.
    Edit: Another cool idea is no matter if the main character is the killer or not, bring the killer back in the sequel and instead of us figuring out who the killer is(which we would obviously know) we look into the eyes of the victims and see if THEY can figure it out.

    I gotta be honest I really feel like Scream 4 told this story a bit better, they sure used the legacy characters in a more engaging and believable way in that one. I felt they could have gone way crazier in 2022 with how social media has evolved. The motive for the killer here is kinda "meh" since we don't see a huge chunk of the new cast much until the final act and by then the movie is basically over. I also feel extremely robbed that Iron Flamethrower Ghostface wasn't even a real character like it was teased in the trailers. Still somewhat enjoyable but way less brutal than people make it out to be. Far less kills than Sceam 4 and way less brutal.

I know you’re busy and probably get a million recommendations but I also know you’ve been a big fan of the Jurassic Park series despite the latest entries being pretty subpar compared to the first two. That being said I suggest you check out the series they have running on Netflix now called Camp Cretaceous. It’s presented and marketed as a kids show but I promise it goes deeper than a normal kids show after the first couple episodes, and seasons 3-4 are fantastic, the best the series has been since The Lost World. It also ties in well with the JW movies and is going to tie in with the new one coming in June, so it’d be good to catch up now before the final season drops in May. I didn’t get into the Scream movies until around 2013, so this was the first Scream movie I was able to see in theaters, and I think that puts this one in a special place in my heart!
    I also think the time in between movies also really helps this franchise. Yes you get an updated stack of horror tropes and cliches to reference, but you also get a new mystery you’re trying to solve, and the fact that there’s such a wait in between means we aren’t sick of these characters or the formula of a Scream movie. They’re still fun and still hold a special place in my heart!
    Scream movies are incredibly re-watchable for me, but there’s something special about the first viewing. You’re guessing who the killer is, you’re actually worried about who survives in this movie, and this one checked all the boxes for a very fun entry of this franchise!
