Batunikitty Wayne actually....yes Since they created Barbie to literally have almost EVERY job in the world, having so many fans, making her popular, having no flaws to Barbie, etc Dang, I've never thought of that
There’s an anime that’s called “stuck in another world with my smart phone” and the main character is definitely a Mary Sue. He can use infinite magic, he gets all the girls, and he has his smart phone in a world without technology.
@Laura Birdwell To me, he is not a bad character, and I think it's perfectly fine to have a mary sue. There is literally nothing wrong with having one besides complaining that they are bad. What you said is true, but also highly opinionated. Even if it is called a bad character, some people love it, and some people don't. It is not something that can be proven because it will always change because it is based on personality, and opinion. To me, an anime can't really be bad unless the people who are making it didn't put effort into it. I have enjoyed some anime with quite bad CGI and a few characters others would considered bad because I thought it was wonderful because it was interesting and had work put into it. By the way, the reason I said "That's the point" is because it's supposed to be an overpowered character, that is literally one of the anime archetypes. Not proving the character was good, but that he was a mary sue because that's what he was made to be, it wasn't an accident.
@Laura Birdwell A Mary Sue is a character that is not bad, it's a character that is too perfect, it has no flaws, so it's just fun to make one sometimes. I know, but it still is just an opinion.
Oh come on, literally almost every Isekai MC is a Mary Sue. Look at Rimuru from Slime-datta-ken, the flaws? He is a slime, can't speak (took the voice organs from monster), can't see (a dragon told him how to use mana sense), the weakest monster (hell nah, he got skill that can absorb that dragon), can't eat (absorbs a human being and voila got tongue and not a slime anymore). There's other more powerful? Voila, he can take their skill. The demon lord might kill him!!! Let's be a demon lord instead!!! His friends dead, oh no, wait, let's resurrect them with a theory from unproven legend, but it will absolutely works because of course the percentage is unbelievably low (and power all of his entourage as results). Got confused and no time to learn gazillion skill he has, of course he got a skill to manage all of them to perfection. And, let's win all the enemies because he has lots of dishes recipe that will fill their belly. Yum yum. This worlds really got him a lot of headache.
My friend and I role played our OCs once. My OC wasn't a Mary sue, but my friend's was. She was so annoying that I stopped role playing with her because all her OCs are may sues.
My oc wears heavy armor and has trained to wear it and is rather agile. But if he takes it off he overcompensates with movement and gets paranoid from venerability. Also if he gets shot he can die.
Sids MyName Wow... The first Mlp Character that i made was a Mary Sue then i just declined and she was a alicorn too! Then i realized that mine is a mary sue! So i am working on a Unicorn Oc Not too Perfect Not a Mary Sue Makes Mistakes still working on it
It’s so annoying because they just do everything perfectly on a roleplay game on ROBLOX (anime high school) my oc arabella is strong outgoing and loud but she is also aggressive and short tempered but she is actually a balanced character who doesn’t always win but it’s fun!
There's also the opposite side to the Mary Sue coin, where people can make their characters *so* flawed, dark, and edgy that there's really no point to them. So, I guess there are Mary Sues, and Edgelords?
I mean, being too kind IS a flaw. It's a flaw when you get taken advantage of and surround yourself with toxic people, or get so wrapped up into helping others that you hurt yourself in the process. I'd love to see something that talks about this, especially as it's something I struggle with
I feel like my character is a Mary sue but idkShe's a "alicorn" well a robot alicorn built to improve A.I technology. She's named herself steam because she's hasna steam punk feel. She has trouble showing emotion and was never taught how to use magic. She does like to create things. Most pony's tend to stay away from her because of fear. She's actually really nice. She can feel emotions and think her own thoughts. She is power by magic and a artificial heart. She doesn't need food or air because well she's a robot.
I wouldn’t say she’s a Mary Sue at all! I actually really like the idea of her being a robot alicorn, that’s something I haven’t really seen and it’s a unique idea! Honestly, she seems perfect! (And not perfect in a Mary Sue way, perfect as in she’s an oc with flaws and a strong backstory/origin and seems like a very believable character!)
I really like the idea, and I don’t think that is a Mary Sue at all. Maybe, to tone down the Mary Sue a tiny bit, Steam could only be powered by her artificial heart, instead of that and magic. But that’s my opinion. Have a good day.
Mary sue be like hi my name is (insert a name+something) the skeleton, cat, fairy,Rainbow, bar, rat,Nintendo switch, pony, cake and im the sans wife, girlfriend, dad, mom, cousin, soci, cheto
I feel like it doesn’t matter how many flaws and strengths a character has, as long as the flaws affect the character as much of more than the strengths do.
I can see why people dislike stories with Mary Sue/ Gary Stu ocs. If they're perfect or near perfection, there'll be no obstacles and challenge. There's also some people who like the angst and it's pretty boring sometimes if you don't see the character struggle. Everything would glide by quickly and smoothly. There would probably by no climax or rising action. Sure, the character could still fight the "boss" or villain of the story, but it would seem too easy.
I thought of an oc while watching this video, unfortunately I don't know too much about the MLP universe... Idk if it's good enough but I wanna see if it seems good to any of you guys. Idk what the name should be and idc if any of you use this idea, but there could be a pony, preferably an earth pony, that had a disorder, whether it be mental or physical (I thought of them missing a back leg) and it impacted the pony a lot. Maybe the impact is big or bad, but there has to be struggles. I thought of a lot of struggles with the missing back leg like hard time reaching high or tall objects (this is where the earth pony part comes in 'cause no wings or magic...) and there's also the public attraction because people tend to have their attention drawn to things like that (Sometimes ponies could stare and point, maybe even mock the male or female character for this) Some talents that I thought this pony could have would be maybe he or she is good at baking or cooking, which doesn't require too much working with the missing leg (again, missing leg is the best disability for her/him) and she could help the main 6 characters (there's six, right?) with small tasks or even have an adventure on her own. Another weakness could be is that she doesn't want to let her leg stop her from physical labor, but she helps when it is not needed and ends up making it worse most of the time. That's what I could think of... If you guys ever feel the need to make a story with a character like this, or if you have already started or were currently making a story with a character like this, please tell. I would absolutely love to hear the plot of it all. just reply to this and I'll check it out if you feel comfortable with me reading it. I've been making ocs and fanfics myself, but not for MLP, sorry. Jeez, this was a long text... see ya!
To me (my opinion) Mary Sue's are female oc's who think they are too powerful, Can't be killed, and who last "Forever" I see WAY TOO many Mary Sue's on Pony Town ;w;
+Dexter thoma mary sues are not that scary, as it is said they are as boring as watching paint dry as it were, theres no such thing as perfect but mary sues break that sense of law and with being perfect you dont need to continue your characters development and they stay like it is, so in terms of development mary sues would go /\/\/\/\/\/\( thats only the making of the mary sue, then theres) ---------------------------------------- (basically the finished product and said mary sues adventures, in other words too overpowered to make the adventure exciting, THERES A REASON WHY CHALLENGES WERE MADE PEOPLE! Just saying)
BronyOfTruth Legendary well I think it makes more sense to be perfect because if you were perfect then nothing can go wrong yes making it boring but no evil can cause pain to the ones you love and for me that's everybody so yes I pretty much fall into that trap A lot Bill is only two things I can't do
The last point in this video, I cannot agree with. Characters are neither there to be likeable, nor to be relatable. People create characters from their imagination, and nothing about it should have to do with the audience viewing it. If someone wants to make a mary sue, they can. It is their character and even if they get criticised for it, it's still not up to the viewers to decide what the character can and cannot be. This doesn't mean that the characters woud always be good, but they are just as respectable as any others. Not everything has to be relatable and if it's too perfect, it may be shallow and boring, but at least someone is trying to contribute something that sprouted from their imagination to the fandom and that is truly an amazing thing. Also critique and telling people what to do to make something more 'appealing' (to them), is not the same thing. Just felt like saying that.
Yes this is so true and I making like a character and one of the characters just like a Mary sue but I still give personality just like my brain said me to do the character
This comment is so good! I couldn't agree more. Others are not entitled to change/tell you what to do with your oc just because they don't like it, you are the one having fun creating art pieces and backstories for your ocs, they need to accept that
Please try and listen before commenting. He said MOST people and was NOT shaming anyone. He was giving tips to make your character less perfect and more realistic whether that is for you or for an audience. There was no need to go on a rant.
Everyone in his life has make a Mary Sue/ Gary Stu. More when we are just beginning in creating original characters, more when we are kids, maybe. Of mlp, sonic, Powerpuff girls, etc. I see it like a practice and it's adorable, because the majority are kids making his firts original characters. Mary Sue is only the first step ;)
Honestly, thinking about the mindset of Mary Sue creators is rather fascinating. From what I’ve seen, a good portion of Mary Sues, or OverPowered characters in general are made as self-inserts. Maybe people make Mary Sues to reflect their own desire to be perfect.
When I roleplay from time to time, I always see people that are "shadow demons that can kill you so don't make them mad" or "strength: 10/10 speed 10/10 intelligence 10/10" like wtf.
same and meh brother always makes his character the strongest and has powers of the powerfull one for example my brothers onix description of onix:made from a black hole made wen to sunstones fuse almost as close as a diamond stronger than a general ps if you dont know its his steven universe oc
Mary Sues. Yeah, these things. Let's be honest, I created a Mary Sue when I read my first fanfiction on FIMfiction. I made a yellow unicorn mare with orange mane and red highlights, named her Burning Starlight. I liked her really much and decided to make a story about her. I made her Twilight's pupil, an *extremely powerful magician*. Almost no flaws, ''extremely likable''. With confidence, I posted her to a rating community. Then the rates came. 3/10. Oh boy and how much I battled that "she's absolutely normal and perfect", but I then gave up. One person recommended me a site with common MS flaws. I read it and made another character. A dark blue stallion with light blue mane and pale orange highlights, named Lightcaster. He is a humble, loyal character with overprotective and slightly racist nature, a royal guard. Tried again and voila: 9/10. Well, they said "Never give up". They were right and today I rate and create OCs.
I AM making a "Mary sue" but she figures out she's to perfect and people do get bored of her. She decides to confess every of her flaws. She was being something she wasn't supposed to be. So I guess u could call her a Mary Sue for a bit of her life.
ThunderWolfAnimates that could be a good story. A narssicist realizing and coming to terms with his or her imperfections. I like that. I'd give it a read.
Great video! I've always found that basing characters off of real people is a very handy tool for convincing characters. Keep up the great work! :) -AN
is this gary sue i sort of made my old OC Shadtrax (Unicorn) and turned him into my new OC Skylinx Prime (Griffon) Shadtrax being a Unicorn had very little magic skills but had a good relationship with his marefriend and the one princess he protected. being strong he was good at long ranged weapons and defensive spells. While Skylinx is scared of heights loves gardening, cooking and being creative but is shy due to his small beak, Skylinx is also strong.
It depends on how powerful he is and his overall nature. But you have personal interests that catch the eye. If you just stick to it, I'm sure he'll be fine.
One of my OC's is a pegasus named Icy Breeze. He is light purple with a light and dark blue mane and tail. His special talent is making ice by touching water, when he wants it to be ice. I've had him as an OC for like 2 years and i JUST noticed (when the Rumble episode came out) that his mane and tail are the same as Rumble's! Do you think he is a Gary Stu or a recolor?
Don't worry, it happens all the time that two people come up with the same idea, heck I saw a girl in a theme park with the exact same haircut as my oc
PhoenixTDM no it’s not really a recolour. And what about his personality? Does he have flaws? If he doesn’t add flaws. But yea I have that problem had also. But with the name. My warrior cat OC had the same name as someone else’s OC. But still they were different. Their personality were different and so where the designs. It was just we both had the same name.
Hey to anyone still watching this video could you help me... I think my oc is a Mary Sue... it's my oc Tibbles She's a cyborg, but also a Dricko (a species that I made, part mammal, and part dragon,) She's, funny, helping, kind, and can turn into a bat sized fennec fox/dragon... But I tried to level it out by having a lot of people hate her, have her to have restless leg syndrome, sad a lot, weak, and can't see very much... I still think it's a Mary Sue... (if you saw some of my videos about her you would know what I mean) can anybody give me some advice to fix my oc?
Tibbles Yorkie789 Well, from what I learned from the internet. You should just make some people dislike her. Like two or three. Yes being weak is okay but Tibbles doesn't have to be that weak. And there is nothing wrong with syndrome. I hope this could help you. :) Also you just earned a sub!
Tibbles Yorkie789 I WILL HELP YOU. I WILL MAKE U A NEW OC!!!!! I WILL DRAW IT ON FLIPACLIF, GIVE ME 3 HOURS AND TODAY YOUR OC WILL BE READY!!!!! Is this ok? By da wae I am doing it!!!!
Tibbles Yorkie789 All you have to do is this: Say that she turns into fennec ONLY when she's scared and in dragon ONLY if she's angry because one of her parents was a fennec and other was a dragon and when she was a dragon she accidentally falled and broke some of her bones so she becomes a cyborg. She likes to help and make people happy. You just have to make a better storyline witch will make things make sense and you will stop being a Mary Sue!!! Hope u like this. If not I will do other thing... IM JUST A NINE YEARS OLD GIRL!!!!!!!!! So don't be surprised if I will do something horrible...
UGGGGH. My friend keeps making Mary Sues as her roleplay character. Her character gets angry, but it doesn't affect her because she's too perfect. She always has all the power in the world!
We are on the same boat, my friend OC has *SO MANY POWERS* the powers are not even original, and when we roll play he beats me in every battle, *Including his side Character's* and they don't have powers
My OC use to be a Mary Sue, nad I didn't even knowed what it was, "she never lose, she's always right, she knows everything!", She was... What I wanted to be, But I grow up and realized. 1-We don't need to be perfect, so why would our OC? 2-She's base one me, If I wound't do it, why would she? 3-A backstory should come first than the "cool abilities" (sorry for bad english, I am Brazilian ^^' tell me if I wrote something wrong to learn more about this beautiful language)
luanita307 What you learned was very important for character building. I'm sure your characters are better for it, as well as your writing. I hope you don't mind me proofreading your comment, since you said you wanted to learn more about the English language. I tutor people sometimes, and find that having your mistakes corrected helps you learn. A corrected version of your comment follows. My OC used to be a Mary Sue, and I didn't even know what that was. She never lost, she was always right, and she knew everything! She was what I wanted to be, but I grew up and realized some things. 1) We don't need to be perfect, so why would our OC? (You did this line perfectly. Doing numbering the way you did is fine for casual stuff.) 2) She's based on me. If I wouldn't do it, why would she? 3) A backstory should come first, then the "cool abilities." (or) 3) A backstory should come first, before the "cool abilities." (Which one is better depends on how you want to word it.) (I hope this helps, and I'm sorry if it's unwanted.)
Other traits and trends also tend to be very unrealistic and overly tragic backstories and the like. Not to say your character can't have a tragic backstory, but it has to fit in context and not be over done.
Nice video, but I feel that there are more things than just a lack of flaws that make a character a Mary Sue. I have compiled a list of other traits that I see in a ton of Mary Sues but I feel are never brought up. 1. False Characterflaws. One of the worst is something I refer to as 'false characterflaws', character-flaws that are rendered pointless due to the story being written in such a way that the "flaws" never leave any impact on the character's life. The best way that I can put it is the following scenario: Imagine that you have an OC and you decide that the character's flaw should be a short temper and a lack of brain-to-mouth filter. Perfectly acceptable flaws, nothing wrong there. But the way they become false character-flaws is if they either A. never affects the characters the OC likes, and/or B. never has any serious consequences. It really is a case of "show, don't tell". You say that your OC has this flaw and that flaw all day, but unless they actually leave a negative impact they are not true flaws. 2. Selfawareness. And not just in terms of what a Mary Sue is either, we are talking about having insight that the character should not have in universe. Knowledge that only a fangirl could possess. I know that as a fangirl it is very tempting to rewrite certain aspects of the shows we watch or games we play, whether to right a wrong or change the fate of the characters we like. But often it comes across as pretenscious and it makes the creator behind the character incredibly transparent. And to make matters worse, these kinds of character use that knowledge to eliminate any challenge or struggle that stands in their way. It is unsufferable and only serves to remind you that the character doesn't belong in the world. 3. The Interactions with the characters in the show This is probably the biggest warning-sign that a character is on its way to become a Mary Sue and one thing that you should watch out for as a character-creator and even more so as a writer. The issue here comes when your OC's interactions with the canon characters is entirely dictated by which characters you like and which ones you don't with no realistic attempts at building a relationship at all. All the 'good' and 'redeemable' characters instantly gravitate towards the OC and anyone who is 'bad' or disagrees with the OC are humiliated and disposed of, once again without real consequences. Even worse, the latter characters are often turned into either iredeemable monsters or complete morons with no redeemable or identifiable character-traits whatsoever. Into mere hollow shells of what they were in the sourcematerial. It feels incredibly shallow and downright manipulative in some cases. I often like to call Mary Sues the spoiled brats of the OC-world. They are spoiled and coddled by their creators and as such end up as flat and annoying characters. All characters needs to have flaws, and even more so permantent flaws that don't go away when its convinient, in order to be relatable and interesting.
Does selfawareness count if they know they're a fictional character but dont know what other characters abilities/traits are unless they take their time to figure them out?
I basically make my OC who I am, mixed with what I wanna look like. (Human OC) I make her look different, but have the same personality as I do IRL. With my MLP OC, it's a tiny bit different. I like an interesting OC, with an even more interesting story behind it. I often have some major problem that began long ago, which has lingered with that character till this day.. She's a pegasus, and has an interesting feature like no other.. When she was a filly, like super young, she fell into some paint, that got splattered on the tips of her ears, muzzle, feet, and on her flank. Now, that paint never came off. And she never got a cutiemark.. Why? Because those paint stains ARE her cutie mark. Kewl huh?
Also some advice for critics (Not you Ty, just saying this in general). The term Mary Sue has been overused and misused way too much. Do your research before you call someone's OC a Mary Sue. It can be very insulting for someone who put a lot of work into their OC or made it a mirror of their true selves (in that case you're calling THEM a Mary Sue). Just because the story of a character has a happy ending, or they have pulled themselves out of the slums to become a hero or a princess, doesn't make them perfect.
In addition I think one defining trait that DOES make a OC a MS is if nothing bad ever happens to them. Its fine if a lot of good things happen, as long as it isn't 100% of the time.
The original Mary Sue was a Star Trek fan character who was a stand-in for the author and her fantasies. Her name was Mary Sue. Putting yourself into a story can be as damaging as any other Mary Sue. If you want to make an OC to represent yourself, that's fine, but consider writing for other characters before you make a backstory for your persona OC.
I'm not saying that any of you have said this, but being an alicorn doesn't mean they're a Mary Sue. There is this canon comic that shows how Cadence is super insecure of herself and how everyone likes her and how she feels that they think of her of just some higher-up poster girl pretty princess or something. And the episode A Royal Problem and that small part of Celestial advice shows that Celestia really isn't perfect, that she misinterprets stuff and gets insecure too. Twilight and Luna are self-explanatory. Flurry Heart, as of now, I'll admit is kind of a baby Mary Sue, but there's still room for personality depth and stuff once she grows older. Let's hope Hasbro won't waste their and our time making her a real Mary Sue.
I believe there is another type of Mary sue/ Gary Stu, "The ones that have TOO MANY flaws" example: dead parents depression (has committed suicide more then once) anger issues Psychopathic no emotions (except for sadness anger disgust negativity) no one likes them killed 500 + more ponies I'm I the only one who thinks this kind of pony is a Mary Sue /Gary Stu?
Yessss I see so many of that. Girl with dead parents who has unlimited power but has a secret and is angry but will the hot guy uncover her secret and love her etc
To me,a Mary Sue is an OC that looks too much like other fictional character, like a recolor. Or it has too many abilities,accessories,colors..etc Often, characters with bright or neon colors were Mary Sues to me This video helped me to make better OCs,no matter how hard I tried, they always ended up looking like recolors or Mary Sues
Bro ..make Mary sue WHENEVER you want it’s not their opinion to change ur oc no and doesn’t mean they look like an canon character means it’s an Mary sue no also if you have a Mary sue can I see it?
5:14 what the fuck I was eating while watching this and when he said Monalisa like that I threw up my drink, it didnt land on the computer, it did on the food tho, I cant eat dis now Laughing so hard was worthy tho
Hello! I'm not into my little pony, or anything, but these videos do really help me with my own original anime character! I completely understand how some of the Mlp fandom members find overpowered OCs with cliche back stories annoying. Thank you tyandaga, you are actually helping me make an OC that's original, and not overpowered, I'm trying to make a OC character to make a gaming and art channel for entertainment. I hope you get big in the future, you've earned a subscriber! =]
One thing everyone must remember is, OC'S ARE MEANT TO BE REPRESENTATIONS OF *OURSELVES*! Do you secretly have issues being social? Then don't make your OC an extrovert social butterfly!
Mythimagic but I have an oc that loves being around people and is an extrovert, he prefers to have as many friends as possible and forgives easily, but I'm an introvert and prefer to have limited friends, I also don't forgive too easy...
Mythimagic I think that you're confusing personas with ocs Personas are representations of yourself. Ocs are characters that you create. That may or may not be based on you.
Cool Name Okay, you're all missing what I mean here. The point of originally creating new characters, was to see yourself in a show you liked. Now, it's become something so BIG, it's more interesting than the actual show. Sometimes people are trying a little TOO hard to make a good character, and that's where fault comes from.
Mythimagic no it wasn't.... People originally created characters to make stories out of, role play with, draw, ect if you're making a character with a backstory and everything just to see what is represented as you in a show or something... What's the point of making the character..?
02:50 I don't think that simply "giving them flaws" is the solution, because this might as well end with flaws that feel "artificial" and people will notice that for sure. I'd rather say: DISCOVER their flaws that are ACTUALLY RELEVANT TO THE STORY by looking for things that could make their goal harder to achieve or the problems they're struggling with harder to overcome. Such flaws are automatically a potential for character development & growth throughout the story.
When I was in 4th grade I didn't know about Mary Sues, so me and my friend made these alicorns that saved Equestria, and we made them on pony generator... yeah. After that I made like 4 other OCs and stuck with the 4th one :3
Like, mah OC is an unicorn who has alicorn powers. She's black with an orange hair and everypony loves her. She never lose and her bestie is Cadence. She has saved Equestria like thousand times and she's a loyal guard. Her mother is Princess Celestia and husband Flash Sentry. Oh, did I forgot to mention that her first name is Mary and last name Sue? WELL, now you know :D
Thanks so much for all of your 'tips on a good OC' type of videos. They really do help me alot especially your 'good backstory' ones. Even though they are for MLP, they help me with other things to like anime, TV shows, etc. Thanks so much again helps me tons!
I hate it people always assume that Flurry Heart is a Mary sue. I mean, she has no personality yet, because she's literally a baby. As time goes by I'm sure she will change. Just because she's an alicorn doesn't mean she's a Mary sue. With that, I would like to say my headcannon story for her. Flurry Heart is a adventurous pony. She likes archery, so she rather do that then sit in her mother's boring princess classes. She often finds herself in some trouble, whether it be with spells or her crashing into something because she's a little clumsy (and she never watches where she's going). She also seems to have less trouble making friends with the guys than she does with other girls, mostly because she likes doing tricks and stuff like that then playing dress up. The Crystal Empire always questions her though, like "Would she be a good leader?" or "We don't stand a chance with her as our princess!" which often makes Flurry think she has done something wrong. All of that pushed behind her when she at her Aunt Twilight's house (or should I say castle). It's something about her ponyville friends that makes her feel like she belongs.
some people think that because of dreading it if people just assume outright then its there problem id rather wait and see how that character develops and then judge the actions or look of the character instead of doing it right off the bat
Then again, a Mary sue could be considered too Disney-Princess-steryotypical. However, I agree that Flurryheart probably isn't a Mary Sue. Just consider how unique, original, and good the cannon/character is.
I'm writing a book, so this is really helpful. Also, I know of a Mary sue in one of the book series i read. This cat is called Dovewing. Dovewing has magic. She was so boring, the writers had to make her fight beavers.
When you think about it, a LOT of canon characters are also Mary Sues and Gary Stus. That's pretty much why fans often prefer the deuteragonist or the tritagonist over the protagonist. Or even a more minor character. Disney and Pixar movies are a perfect example of this phenomenon.
The terminology can be applied to official characters. There are many different forms of media and books that have Mary Sues and Gary Stues alike. See: Ichigo from Bleach. He does have his flaws, but the fact he is immensely powerful and is literally every type of creature in the show combined into one person it completely overshadows the aforementioned flaws. Also, the protagonist from Sword Art Online just to name a few.
Alright how about my character? My sona is different but this character is one I love a lot. Name: Magnus Age: 19 Species: Jersey Devil (check them out if you aren't sure what that means) Personality: He is quiet, timid, and shy. It doesn't take a lot to rile him up or make him angry. Magnus is loyal to his friends and rather creative, if not impatient. He is cautious and always thinks before he acts. Backstory: Jersey Devils aren't native to Equestria, but life was too rough out there, so Magnus's mother left him in the care of an old pony named Shamrock Shortfall, and he grew up in Equestria. Annoyed with how ponies treated him differently, running away or gasping at his frightening appearance, he joined a villain (another character of mine, a pegasus) to turn every pony into an earth pony... to equalize them. He painted a black x on his flank in place of a cutie mark. He later realized his mistakes and helped stop the Pegasus villain.
Akilah Dasig God like characters are genrally an exception, so long as they aren't the main character. She also has a serious problem with deception, and hiding things from her citizens. That causes a lot of problems, and I feel takes her out of Sue category.
Looking back at my original designs for my main OC, she was 100% a Mary Sue! Luckily I watched a few of these types of videos and fixed her up ;w; so crrriinnngggeeeeyyyy...
Is it considered a Mary Sue if I make my character a daughter of Celestia?A lot of people classify alicorns or any other characters that are somehow related to the canon characters as Mary Sues,so I'm just being careful with my creations 😊
Making her a daughter of Celestia is fine. But you have to come up with a believable reason for why she is. +Willowclaw's Commenting Channel I actually think having alicorn OC's not be royalty makes them more mary sue like. There should be a reason for why they are alicorns and they should have all the powers and responsibilities that come with it.
I personally think fans should refrain from making alicorn ocs. Its very...well for me this is pretty much the definition of mary sue. It's like "hey look at me i am so special" Its ok for lairen faust to have a alocorn oc, she's the creator of the show afterall, but it's not for us, fans. This is my personal opinion, its ok if you think otherwise. But i gotta say if i see an alicorn oc its a total nogo for me.
maybe you should make her not an alicorn? and if she's extremely old, let's say Celestia made a immortality spell? that way she isn't too overpowered. immortality is not too bad considering other mlp ocs
It only depends on how powerful they are, how strong, how perfect, when they’re too perfect, you might need to realize that you have to step back and limit it.
Great video! I thought about this topic a lot too because many fandoms have this kind of characters. I thought that if someone starts a story and realise that his/her character is a mary sue they could say that the Mary Sue’s traits are how the character sees her/himself and they are actually snobby and many hate them for that and later in the story they might realize they aren’t so awesome maybe because they were defeated in battle by the bad guy or failed at something that was important for the oc or has a fight with a dear friend that opens his/hers mind about it, all of this example will make the oc think about themself and create an interesting plot where the oc has to regain the trust of others and show humility realizing that no one is perfect
"my oc is the daughter of luna and sombra!!!1!1 her name is princess midnight moon!!1!!!1 she is an alicorn and is more powerful than all the unicorns in equestria combined!!!!!111!!!!! but she turned evil once like her mum ;-; but when she became good again everyone forgave her because she is a kind and pretty princess!!!1!!!" -hundreds upon thousands of uneducated children thank you tyandaga for helping these poor people learn how to create a decent character *eye twitches*
0/-10 fake Mary Sue. Change the name to Princess Fantasia Crystal Fanciful Aurora Borealis Sparkle Mystick Aerith Mydnyght Starr Nyghtshade Alabaster Zenith Kaitlynn Moon and then we'll talk.
supinestargazing My old OC's are the daughters of Luna and Sombra xD They're called Snowmoon and Crystalmoon. Snow was because I have another OC, who isn't a pony, called Snowstar. So Snowmoon is the pony version of Snowstar. Same with Crystalmoon, but her other OC version is called Crystalheart. It was a coincidence, that Sombra has something to do with crystals, and His daughter is named Crystalmoon. And the moon in the end of their names is because, ye know Apple Jack's family? They all have something to do with apples and such, so Luna's daughters names are like that. They're kinda Mary Sues.... Snow turned evil 0_0 I think I'll change a little bit of the story, but I'll also make another MLP OC... An earth-pony, that wanted to be "special" so much, she built a fake-horn and fake-wings. But maybe, in the end, she accepted herself... Maybe something like that.
Do you think this is enough flaws: Horrible cooker Super clumsy Distracted Takes anger management Always forgets stuff Trying to play violin ( bad ) Kind of stupid Violent (I mean if u anoy her she will kick u)
Super clumsy is not a flaw everyone can be clumsy, getting distracted is not a flaw everyone gets distracted, Cooking is one. think of talent or skills that can come natural to someone but not to you. let's say one character can't fight, his fighting skill sucks ass but he try's anyway, while His fighting style isn't great or anything he can still make it out of a fight, just not without having horrible scars or bruises to prove it. Flaw's can be worked on but nothing can be perfected, it wont and SHOULDN'T take a character a chapter in a half to learn every style of fighting ever made and come out of every fight top notch and ready to destroy his next opponent. everyone has flaw's but clumsy and distracted aren't something that is really a flaw, hell i get distracted by things all the time, and believe me when i say I'm clumsy.
pipsonicx3 Clumsy can be a flaw if it's used well. So long as it isn't used in the anime "Moe" way, then you're good. If a character is naturally clumsy, it can hold them back, like a soldier or hero who alerts the enemy because they can't be stealthy. Easily distracted is also a flaw. If someone can't focus well, it can be a major detriment. It's all on how you use them. If they never have any harsh is because of a characteristic, then it isn't a flaw. If they do, then it is.
Bethany Ashley hm I don't know, I don't find those to be flaws more of a common place for everyone.but like yous aid it's all in the way you see it. Eh I'm just giving idea. sorry xD
My first MLP oc is the daughter of Princess Luna and King Sombra, it's a sort of what-if scenario, her name is Midnight "Mare" Moon, she is hidden within the old Castle of the Pony Sisters(can't remember crap for the life of me), some parts of it are fixed up and she is kept here so that she is never found out about, she is just a filly, she may have strong magic born around the same day as Nightmare night, hence her name, but she cannot control such strong magic and actually only knows how to teleport but not on command as she only does such a thing out of fear. She was born an Alicorn like Flurry Heart though unlike flurry she cannot use her wings to fly just yet as her wings are very big but she cannot use them as they aren't developed properly. Her horn is slightly curved like that of King Sombra and she actually sorta looks like a mix of her two parents, like her mother she can transform though most of her magic power is unleashed during this time which is very bad as it is uncontrollable and extremely dangerous to try and force something so strong. She is a nice young filly who will actually hide her wings or even her horn so that she isn't found out or questioned for her appearance, she is a kind, gentle filly who likes nature as she has been around nature for as long as she has been around. Ok Mary Sue?, Or no?
One of the more interesting flaws I decided to give my pony character, Nova Blast, is that he has a irrational fear of water - he can accept stuff like showers or buckets of water, but more like rivers, seas, oceans is where he gets frightening. He is terrified that something is lurking beneath the surface constantly, just waiting to pull him down into the deep dark abyss below...
LOL I created a character named Nova Blast in a pathfinder pony rpg! She's an Earth Pony alchemist who is obsessed with bombs and explosions. She's also super clumsy and non-perceptive, which has resulted in penalties to recognizing bad guys and accuracy in hitting them with her bombs. I like your description of your character. Sounds like a relatable fear with many possibilities for consequences!
I know the feeling, I have a character named lullaby, and everyone calls her a marysue just because i say she's 'pure' and yet they don't even try to look at her flaws. 'pure' isn't' 'perfect'
My friends oc os stupid in my opinion, she is a blue alicorn with a pink Fluttershy- like mane and was the daughter of luna, no flaws whatsoever with a "tragic backstory" 😒
But, if they have no flaws, then how can they have a tragic backstory? I think sometimes of the Punisher or batman, where they can get so in the moment or so angry that just about kill someone and have to live with blood on their hands. Not perfect and tragic. If one is perfect, then to me they can't have a tragic backstory, unless, they have the illusion of perfect in their minds, which can be a flaw, and can be good for comedy.
+Tresson Karu The thing with a Sue's tragic backstory is that it doesn't really _affect_ them. It's just a sticker the author slaps on their character to make them seem more interesting, or occasionally to give them barely-justified motivation.
when I create a character, I go DEEEP into everything, I have defined and written 10 paragraphs that describe the world they come from and 5 paragraphs that explain how magic and powers work, I don't publish it but I always use it so the character gives the feeling that they are from a story, a world of their own and not just some text I cam up with in 5 minutes
Now I want to write a story about a character who starts off as a Mary Sue (or Gary Stu) but realizes that they are overly powerful and really well liked, and uses that to their advantage and quickly becomes the bad guy of the story.
I make my characters powerful but they have a traumatic backstory making them hesitate to use their powers. I often make them have my trauma and go through stuff I went through. My example would be Charlie: She's childish and annoying and often gets yelled at due to her always annoying everyone. She's a side character and her backstory isn't too deep
My friend has her own oc that i think is a mary sue and early on her oc was a mary sue for sure i would try to make my character unique but when i told her the trait she would say she also had the trait.
I always thought Mary Sues were predictable, or fit so much into being a girly girl (or a 'tough guy') that it gets so stupid. To me, a Mary Sue is someone that doesn't have the capability to show the unexpected. And I love the unexpected. It gives me a feeling of excitement that either makes me wanna keep reading, or writing. And I actually like giving my characters a tragic backstory, but always having to come out from under in varying ways, sometimes for the good, other times not so much.
personally I think the fandom version of undertale sans is a gary stu, I mean. when I roleplay with someone. and they are sans. people are literally doing this "*shoots 10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 faster blasters at Chara and chara dies* " and I'm not joking. like DUDE.
You poor soul. :( 1.) People forget that Sans is literally the weakest character in the game. 2.) People are forgetting the lore of the game 3.) It's old and overused and please just stop 4.) It's not fun
This video helped a lot when I first watched it! Honestly, two years ago was when I was first really making characters. Now, I hardly ever run into making Mary Sues. That being said. Sometimes it can be fun to make a Mary Sue like character. I made a character who THINKS he's the best thing to have ever happened to the world and has the biggest ego ever. He wears awful outfits and goes around changing colors of everything (as changing colors is his magic so to speak). Honestly, people shouldn't be so afraid of making a Mary Sue. Because! If done correctly, they could develop into a rather interesting character.
I mean, I have made a OC who's a god who can visit any world in existence (MLP, Steven Universe, Etc) But there is still flaws in him, he's sometimes nostalgic when things change, He can die despite reviving 12 hours later and will use incorrect information or actions to someone or something. My OC is meant to be the representation of the Player, The people who play games, the people they want to play as and want to be. I agree it is Gary Stu Material, and I aint afraid to admit it, I always find a way to make him well balanced if his character gets a little too far.
My friend and i were making ocs for our roleplay. She made a Mary sue and I got soooo annoyed. She made her character known by everyone, strongest person on earth, prettiest and most loved
It is stupid that people accused a character to be a Mary-Sue/Gary-Stu without even know the meaning of the word. They are using the word to justify their hate toward a character, I'm looking straight at you Star Wars Fans.
How to fix your mary/gary sue 1.Sad backstory 2.Work for their skill(atleast some of them) 3.Anger isuses/phopbias/can't control their emotion 4.Make them have weakness, i didn't don't mean to make them weak!I mean to not making a charachter powerfull, you can stillmake they more powerful than other OC's but not with much 5.Chose a collor pallete likeble for eyes! And it's done
It's very annoying when someone make a character what is like this: -Never smiles -Hates everyone -everyone hates them -Is best of fightin' -Not speaking much -always in bad mood ... You know? x((
That would be an Anti-Sue and they're just as bad as Mary Sues since they have no positive qualities to them at all. A good character has both positives and negative aspects to their personalities (just like real people). So it's always best to have a balance of the pros and cons.
Embbu That's a shame. Is your friend still new to writing? That could possibly be why since it's a common mistake a lot of early writers make, especially when they try to avoid making a Mary Sue. I think you should perhaps give your friend some gentle constructive criticism. Tell them the things they can do to improve themselves as a writer. Also your English is actually pretty good.
+mjangelvortex Well shes not new in the OC world(xDD) And if I'd say something about her character the others would just protect her and her OC.. And thanks :3
Was kind of expecting more of an appearance from Mary Sue, probably near the end with her saying something the lines of "What's this coat rack saying about me?!"
but what if they have too many flaws? that also draws a lot of attention and makes more and more people feel sorry for them and want to be their friend, hence, making them a Mary Sue
Just because the character draws a lot of attention, people feel sorry for them and want to be their friend, doesn't mean their a mary sue. It doesn't work that way. Too many flaws would mean either A good story where they learn how to face themselves and their fears to fix the problem, to get to know themselves for the better or a total disaster should the character dwell on their flaws, not trying at all, in that case they would be completely useless in most situation's and make for an incredibly boring character. So it heavily depends on how the character is used and why It also highly depends on the setting, story, need and character development(this is for a character whose "too flawed" if you put it that way, but it can apply to every other kind of character too i guess). Where is the character placed? In the aftermath of a bloody war? In a family that's expect's only greatness from their child? If you want a character that has a lot of flaws to make sense, then put them where it would have them result in having the flawed personality they have. Explain how they got there and why it is the way it is in the place their put in. What is the need to have that character there? and how will the character develop as a person? as a whole? If non of these exist in said flawed character, and their just flawed because "reasons" then yes, their a Mary Sue, however if they have story, character development, something that makes them a real personality like the above, then their NOT a Mary Sue u.u
Half demon?? That would just equal 2 wholes maybe if they said 1/4 it could work BUT it would still be a Mary Sue and the different colour eyes is a real thing that my auntie and myself have it's called heterochromia
This actually goes for all ice in General. I like it! I made my first OC ever a Mary sue but I had no idea what this meant, but I changed it so people wouldn't be like that. My first OC was a transformer oc.
Yes, over trusting leads to blindness of a situation. It makes it dangerous no matter the situation. Such a them falling for a villains lies, or leading to there mental health being damged.
A have a pony oc, it... -I actually have 2- Their names are Anilove and cupcake Anilove (used to be)- most powerful unicorn and a really good flyer. ALICORN. Had no foes and only had friends. Sister: FLURRYHEART?!?!?! Anilove (now)- an okay unicorn, who has quite a lot of foes and some friends. Loves animals and is now... a unicorn. Family: Unknown Cupcake (she is sorta new so she doesn’t have an old version)- a Pegasus with a robot leg and a half skeleton wing. Is sorta insane and works for pinkie pie (pinkies creepypasta) helps pinkie make cupcakes out of pony’s Backstory- ok... short... cupcake was pinkies next victim for the day, and she liked the feeling of pain... pinkimena Dian pie cut off her leg, and cut part of her wing... umm... she laughed and for some reason... pinkie made her... her assistant...? WUT Ok ok ok... old Anilove was a Mary Sue... cupcake... I don’t know... I guess not...
that is very rude for them not to ask before using art or linking back to the artist that owns it and i suspect they might get it off of google -_- maybe report the video if there isnt a way to communicate to them and make them give proper credit? they should've checked who owned the pics first though if they werent commisioned for this video personally
+Tyandaga im not the creator so i cant say what to link for them (hopefully they contact yea!) but ita good it was just a mistake! even with friends best to check if they created pictures or found them so we dont mistake you for purposely using without credit and thinking your stealing or something!
morgan vanhentenryck It's certainly a good wake up call for me on my end, I have to start keeping a proper list of whose artwork I've added to the video, and find a way to neatly provide it in the description :ss.
Thank you Tyandaga! Your advice does help me much with my MLP fan fictions, but I also find it helpful in all my other writing projects. Thanks so much! :)
xramengrlx All her flaws are just there to make her look like a better person. She's studies too much, she cares too much about her work, she's too focused on being a good friend, she's too attentive to her duties, she's too serious about her job. She's too smart. She reads too much. She began the show without ever having a friend and within 2 episodes, became the one person who gives advice about friendship to everyone. Her powers outshine every other pony on the show, she got made into a princess, and she solves every problem even without being apart of the plot. She's literally admitted on the show that she doesn't know why she's so important, but she accept that she is important anyway. She's the biggest Mary Sue I've ever seen. List one flaw she had that isn't actually a complement to her character in disguise. She doesn't have one. She's the biggest Mary Sue alive in any TV show I've ever watched. I'm really curious how you can watch this video and not see that.
+KellySmith555 But all of those things you listed are to a fault. Shes too smart which makes her obnoxious when it comes to things she thinks she knows better than others. Shes so focused on being on time that she almost ran the whole town crazy and ruined friendships in the process. She's careless when it comes to people shes not focused on and mildly abusive to spike. Just because there is some good that comes from her faults, doesnt make her a Mary Sue. The only thing Mary Sue about Twilight are her super convenient spells she just happens to know to continue plot or solve problems because the show writers are too lazy to come up with a better or continuity fueled reason. She didnt start out a Princess. She became one after hard work and 3 seasons!
xramengrlx All of those things make her more perfect. Being too perfect isn't a flaw. Its poor writing. She's the most privileged pony in the show. She's had massive power ever sense she was a kid. She was personally selected as Celestia's private student since she was a child. She was baby sat by a bleeding princess and she's lived in the most powerful city in the whole show. On top of all of that, she started this show with never having had a friend and within a few episodes gave advice to everyone on how to be a good friend. She's constantly involved in every character's life even when she doesn't need to be there, and she solves problems she should even be apart of. Her only flaw is that she's so perfect other people can't seems to meet up to her standards of perfection. If you think she earned her princesshood, you might have missed how privileged she began in this story. I've yet to see Twilight struggle with anything, as she's always got the answers. She's always got the perfect spell, or the perfect piece of advice to save the day. Did i forget to mention that she became an Alicorn, which is the same immortal race of ponies that are synonymous with God on the show? I mean, Celesita is basically God, and now she is one too. She's so special only she is strong enough to save the world over and over because her friends ships are the most powerful significant friendship in the world. Her power is literally, being important. No literally, her friends are only special because they are her friends. She even has the power to change their destinies. This character is so perfect its basically disgusting. She's a Mary Sue on every level. If she's not a Mary Sue, than Mary Sue's don't exist.
Very late comment: Well, I like roleplaying with people on Facebook and when there are fights I want it to be fair and such, like not dodging every single attack. But one time, I was roleplaying with some dood and he was almost untouchable. Thats the reason why I don't roleplay fights xDD
I hate it when people make a character unbeatable. What's the point of fighting them if you know you'll never win? Or worse, kill you. You'll just keep trying to win them while they mock you for being so weak? Nah. I have role played with these type of people. It's horrible, imo.
I'm currently writing a fic. There is a character that is very evil that is basically an evil Mary Sue. He is very liked by evil forces but disliked by the good. He is also very powerful. What is the evil version of a Mary Sue? The way you define a Mary Sue is a good, not evil likeable character. What if this Mary Sue was evil and liked by evil?
There is a villainous version known, surprisingly, as the Villain Sue. This is usually a villain who is always "one step ahead" or arranges for everything to be "exactly as planned" even when that makes no sense whatsoever. Basically, the author wants them to be super awesome, but can't or won't create good explanations as to why, so they (the author) cheat. I'm not sure how a villain who is automatically liked by all villains would be classified. If it could be justified, it could be cool. If it wasn't, it would be sort of random and weird. But if there's any time of character where overpowering might be acceptable, it would be a villain. But only if you can beat them without it feeling cheap.
My first character was quite likable. She was created in the time I was actually a bubbly little girl. She was amazing in my eyes still now. Her looks were only a little overused. As a cat she was silver and white with green eyes. But I still love her.
is barbie a Mary sue?
Batunikitty Wayne actually....yes
Since they created Barbie to literally have almost EVERY job in the world, having so many fans, making her popular, having no flaws to Barbie, etc
Dang, I've never thought of that
Batunikitty Wayne Would contributing to unrealistic body image in thousands of young girls count as a character flaw? If not, then yeah, she's a Sue.
Bethany Ashley they now make new Barbie body types and hair types so now they aren't always perfect
Vixie she also has sisters, but yea, Barbie is perfect in every way....she makes me sick now the little bastard
Candy and Sketch yea the original blonde Barbie is just ugh!

What is a Mary Sue
There’s an anime that’s called “stuck in another world with my smart phone” and the main character is definitely a Mary Sue. He can use infinite magic, he gets all the girls, and he has his smart phone in a world without technology.
That is the point of the anime.
male mary sues are called gary stues just so ya know :3
@Laura Birdwell To me, he is not a bad character, and I think it's perfectly fine to have a mary sue.
So then a Mary Sue cutiemark would be this:

My friend and I role played our OCs once. My OC wasn't a Mary sue, but my friend's was. She was so annoying that I stopped role playing with her because all her OCs are may sues.
Sids MyName
Wow
kinda harsh? could've given her constructed criticism
Sids MyName same because my all my friends OCs are mary sues
My oc wears heavy armor and has trained to wear it and is rather agile. But if he takes it off he overcompensates with movement and gets paranoid from venerability. Also if he gets shot he can die.
Sids MyName Wow... The first Mlp Character that i made was a Mary Sue then i just declined and she was a alicorn too! Then i realized that mine is a mary sue! So i am working on a Unicorn Oc Not too Perfect Not a Mary Sue Makes Mistakes still working on it
I watched this video a while ago, changed design, backstory, and look. It helped so much! Tysm!
I hate Mary Sue's/Gary Sue's more than anything else. Especially in Roleplays, Oh goD nOt tHe rOLepLays

It’s so annoying because they just do everything perfectly on a roleplay game on ROBLOX (anime high school) my oc arabella is strong outgoing and loud but she is also aggressive and short tempered but she is actually a balanced character who doesn’t always win but it’s fun!

For me my FAKE friend is a Mary Sue 😒
If their a FAKE friend, thats their flaw.

There's also the opposite side to the Mary Sue coin, where people can make their characters *so* flawed, dark, and edgy that there's really no point to them. So, I guess there are Mary Sues, and Edgelords?
Lookin at you, Ebony Dark'ness Dementia Raven Way!
don't forget the joke ones
Galliod I think those are called victim sues
I thought the opposite of Mary Sue was a Gary sue
Anti-sues. They're often hated as much as Mary Sues.
I mean, being too kind IS a flaw. It's a flaw when you get taken advantage of and surround yourself with toxic people, or get so wrapped up into helping others that you hurt yourself in the process. I'd love to see something that talks about this, especially as it's something I struggle with
Ah yes the backstab
Sam Diehl yeah
That is actually a great oc!
I really like the idea, and I don’t think that is a Mary Sue at all. Maybe, to tone down the Mary Sue a tiny bit, Steam could only be powered by her artificial heart, instead of that and magic. But that’s my opinion. Have a good day.

Jeez, this was a long text... see ya!
That's basically the same reason why I don't like OPM...
To me (my opinion) Mary Sue's are female oc's who think they are too powerful, Can't be killed, and who last "Forever"
I see WAY TOO many Mary Sue's on Pony Town ;w;
Pony town? :o What is this Pony town you speak of :0
SHOW ME >:'o
Cam The Goddess of War and Death Ik!!! Well, I just got ponytown yesterday but WHO CARES!!!
PopopamAJ It’s where you can create characters(ponys) and rp or hang out with them.
I MUST PLAY >:0
Gary dues are same but male
Yep Mary Sue actually does scare the crap out of me
Well I love her. She's great.
GMSK 758 well I did not mean to offend you
+Dexter thoma mary sues are not that scary, as it is said they are as boring as watching paint dry as it were, theres no such thing as perfect but mary sues break that sense of law and with being perfect you dont need to continue your characters development and they stay like it is, so in terms of development mary sues would go /\/\/\/\/\/\( thats only the making of the mary sue, then theres) ---------------------------------------- (basically the finished product and said mary sues adventures, in other words too overpowered to make the adventure exciting, THERES A REASON WHY CHALLENGES WERE MADE PEOPLE! Just saying)
BronyOfTruth Legendary well I think it makes more sense to be perfect because if you were perfect then nothing can go wrong yes making it boring but no evil can cause pain to the ones you love and for me that's everybody so yes I pretty much fall into that trap A lot Bill is only two things I can't do
does not scare me
if such a character try's to be scary
all i will do is laugh
Did anyone notice that the pony at 4:52 looks a lot like Princess Flurry Heart as a fully grown pony xD
It might be a fan drawing of her grown up.
I think it's supposed to be
it is
XxRubyPinesxX That's just so freakin funny
Why yes I have noticed. I'm glad _I'm_ not the only one.
That is very, very troo.
...
I’m making a Mary Sue character for impatient and short-tempered mares to be forced to save.
Fr
Everyone in his life has make a Mary Sue/ Gary Stu.
More when we are just beginning in creating original characters, more when we are kids, maybe.
Of mlp, sonic, Powerpuff girls, etc.
I see it like a practice and it's adorable, because the majority are kids making his firts original characters.
Mary Sue is only the first step ;)
I was that 2 year old making Mary Sues 😝
Yep, and I'm gonna make more
Honestly, thinking about the mindset of Mary Sue creators is rather fascinating. From what I’ve seen, a good portion of Mary Sues, or OverPowered characters in general are made as self-inserts. Maybe people make Mary Sues to reflect their own desire to be perfect.
@@tkjk0481 true true
When I roleplay from time to time, I always see people that are "shadow demons that can kill you so don't make them mad" or "strength: 10/10 speed 10/10 intelligence 10/10" like wtf.
._.
same and meh brother always makes his character the strongest and has powers of the powerfull one for example my brothers onix description of onix:made from a black hole made wen to sunstones fuse almost as close as a diamond stronger than a general ps if you dont know its his steven universe oc
my thoughts exactly ._. this is a kids channel but i have seen worse much much worse .-.
ikr . , .

They were right and today I rate and create OCs.
holy- your second character looks alot like mine! (besides the personality and name of course)
Emery Emonides
Ima Secrat
Rate my OC on G+, that one with the mint green pony with crystal looking mane.
i looked up common ms flaws but i did get only mircosoft flaws what website was it?

Extent the MS short to 'Mary Sue' and then search.
Cremlola Lea thanks
I AM making a "Mary sue" but she figures out she's to perfect and people do get bored of her. She decides to confess every of her flaws. She was being something she wasn't supposed to be. So I guess u could call her a Mary Sue for a bit of her life.
ThunderWolfAnimates that could be a good story. A narssicist realizing and coming to terms with his or her imperfections. I like that. I'd give it a read.
I like it
ThunderWolfAnimates I'd love reading that bio
ThunderWolfAnimates so she starts off as a "wow look at me I'm so cool and beautiful and powerful" sort of person
ThunderWolfAnimates oooo creative
I made a oc
it's was a mary-sue
But I change it a lot and now it's base off my boring life :3
Edit: like my own comment
So your a self insert?
Cinnabuns World same here but I also inserted some of my friends personalities into my oc
But not completely boring right? Not anti-mary sue.
BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD, SKULLS FOR THE SKULL THRONE!!!
There are mary sues / Gary stews
And abused ocs
It should be in the middle
Thanks for the extended patience everyone! =3
Good video! I shall make bettsr OCs >:3
Great video! I've always found that basing characters off of real people is a very handy tool for convincing characters. Keep up the great work! :)

is this gary sue
i sort of made my old OC Shadtrax (Unicorn) and turned him into my new OC Skylinx Prime (Griffon)
Shadtrax being a Unicorn had very little magic skills but had a good relationship with his marefriend and the one princess he protected. being strong he was good at long ranged weapons and defensive spells.
While Skylinx is scared of heights loves gardening, cooking and being creative but is shy due to his small beak, Skylinx is also strong.
+TheLegoBrony I think your oc is great ^^
It depends on how powerful he is and his overall nature.
PhoenixTDM not really, especially since you didn't even know about rumble.
Don't worry, it happens all the time that two people come up with the same idea, heck I saw a girl in a theme park with the exact same haircut as my oc
PhoenixTDM not at all cool oc too
PhoenixTDM nah more like the male pony version of Elsa
PhoenixTDM no it’s not really a recolour. And what about his personality? Does he have flaws? If he doesn’t add flaws.
But yea I have that problem had also. But with the name. My warrior cat OC had the same name as someone else’s OC. But still they were different. Their personality were different and so where the designs. It was just we both had the same name.
CRAP, IT'S A MARY SUE! AAAAAH!
GRAB YOUR PITCH FORKS AND TORCHES!!

Hey to anyone still watching this video could you help me... I think my oc is a Mary Sue... it's my oc Tibbles
She's a cyborg, but also a Dricko (a species that I made, part mammal, and part dragon,)
She's, funny, helping, kind, and can turn into a bat sized fennec fox/dragon...
Also you just earned a sub!
Maybe pitch down the power and make the characteristics affect on the oc.
Edit:I accidentally say of instead of oc. XD
Tibbles Yorkie789 I WILL HELP YOU. I WILL MAKE U A NEW OC!!!!! I WILL DRAW IT ON FLIPACLIF, GIVE ME 3 HOURS AND TODAY YOUR OC WILL BE READY!!!!! Is this ok? By da wae I am doing it!!!!
Alex David oh no I have the design I'm talking about her personality
Tibbles Yorkie789 All you have to do is this:
Say that she turns into fennec ONLY when she's scared and in dragon ONLY if she's angry because one of her parents was a fennec and other was a dragon
and when she was a dragon she accidentally falled and broke some of her bones so she becomes a cyborg.
Naru Nanigoto that sucks. No one would want to rp with him...
Crystal Wolf say if you have all ‘the powers’ then consequently have all the weaknesses. (That is if you like the friend)
Lol I feel ya.... it can get hella annoying
3-A backstory should come first than the "cool abilities"
(sorry for bad english, I am Brazilian ^^' tell me if I wrote something wrong to learn more about this beautiful language)
luanita307 Great observation! And your English is actually really great haha :D
luanita307 What you learned was very important for character building.
Doing numbering the way you did is fine for casual stuff.)
2) She's based on me. If I wouldn't do it, why would she?
3) A backstory should come first, then the "cool abilities."
(or)
3) A backstory should come first, before the "cool abilities." (Which one is better depends on how you want to word it.)
(I hope this helps, and I'm sorry if it's unwanted.)
Bethany Ashley Unwanted? Bro, you just spend a bit of your time to proofread my coment, that's awesome, thank you for the tips :D
oh hey youre brazilian too?
anti septiic sim, sou :D
The best way that I can put it is the following scenario:
Imagine that you have an OC and you decide that the character's flaw should be a short temper and a lack of brain-to-mouth filter.
3. The Interactions with the characters in the show
This is probably the biggest warning-sign that a character is on its way to become a Mary Sue and one thing that you should watch out for as a character-creator and even more so as a writer.
*watches this*
*draws Mary Sue*

SaltyPaper AJ lol
SaltyPaper AJ XD my OC’s name is Galaxy Gamer
SaltyPaper AJ XD
Very productive day! *clap clap*
@@Travelingdork OOF my Mary sue's name is Galaxystar XD
Kewl huh?
^.^
cool
Noice
Then what's her talent
CaffeLatei maybe art?
+Wolfee even a first world problem would be enough, Like being full with your fridge being packed. Or... nah
You should never make a character that represents you, or your "true self". That's actually a red flag for a Mary-Sue character.
We Review Everything! How so?
The original Mary Sue was a Star Trek fan character who was a stand-in for the author and her fantasies. Her name was Mary Sue. Putting yourself into a story can be as damaging as any other Mary Sue. If you want to make an OC to represent yourself, that's fine, but consider writing for other characters before you make a backstory for your persona OC.
I once made a country cat name:ally and she was disabled she had three legs and also was very shy small and had A mix with a ram... but I love it!!!!
1:20 *cough* *cough* Cadence *cough*
TheHeavenlyBuddy omg I THOUGHT THE EXACT SAME!!!!
TheHeavenlyBuddy all Alicorns except Twilight and Luna ;-;
I have a question. My BFF made an OC, that has few flaws, who was a Unicorn who fell into a potion and became an Alicorn. Is that a Mary Sue?
I mean I would have to read the story or see the character's personality.
The OC may need more flaws, but being an alicorn does NOT make it a Mary sue
Yes
No!
I guess no
I believe there is another type of Mary sue/ Gary Stu, "The ones that have TOO MANY flaws"
example:
dead parents
depression
(has committed suicide more then once)
anger issues
Psychopathic
no emotions (except for sadness anger disgust negativity)
no one likes them
killed 500 + more ponies
I'm I the only one who thinks this kind of pony is a Mary Sue /Gary Stu?
Well if your looking from a evil or bad view than I would say yes
Yeah, the whole “Ohh she has a terrible life and no friends she is an outsider OHH BOO HOO” thing really annoys me
Yessss I see so many of that. Girl with dead parents who has unlimited power but has a secret and is angry but will the hot guy uncover her secret and love her etc
oh my oc is depressed...
But not dead parents but yes has Anger issues ;-;
That is a anti-sue
To me,a Mary Sue is an OC that looks too much like other fictional character, like a recolor. Or it has too many abilities,accessories,colors..etc
Often, characters with bright or neon colors were Mary Sues to me
This video helped me to make better OCs,no matter how hard I tried, they always ended up looking like recolors or Mary Sues
Bro ..make Mary sue WHENEVER you want it’s not their opinion to change ur oc no and doesn’t mean they look like an canon character means it’s an Mary sue no also if you have a Mary sue can I see it?
5:14 what the fuck I was eating while watching this and when he said Monalisa like that I threw up my drink, it didnt land on the computer, it did on the food tho, I cant eat dis now
Laughing so hard was worthy tho
AntoCraftera i
Oh thanks! =3333
One thing everyone must remember is,
OC'S ARE MEANT TO BE REPRESENTATIONS OF *OURSELVES*!
Do you secretly have issues being social? Then don't make your OC an extrovert social butterfly!
Well they *could* be representations of yourself, or they could be completely different characters entirely x3
Mythimagic but I have an oc that loves being around people and is an extrovert, he prefers to have as many friends as possible and forgives easily, but I'm an introvert and prefer to have limited friends, I also don't forgive too easy...
Mythimagic
I think that you're confusing personas with ocs
Personas are representations of yourself.
When I was in 4th grade I didn't know about Mary Sues, so me and my friend made these alicorns that saved Equestria, and we made them on pony generator... yeah. After that I made like 4 other OCs and stuck with the 4th one :3
same thing with me
OMG! You exist! XD
+Duck Town lol XD
Applejack You are best pony. He he.
+Duck Town Thanks lol
I love how well thought out these videos are. Smooth and easy to understand.
Thank you ^.^
Like, mah OC is an unicorn who has alicorn powers.
^.^

chen san ur mary sue...
Thanks so much for all of your 'tips on a good OC' type of videos. They really do help me alot especially your 'good backstory' ones. Even though they are for MLP, they help me with other things to like anime, TV shows, etc. Thanks so much again helps me tons!
6:06 d flurry heart
Every time without fail, I seem to want to make a good character after watching your videos about character development.
It's something about her ponyville friends that makes her feel like she belongs.
ikr!! Alicorns ≠ Mary Sue
some people think that because of dreading it
if people just assume outright then its there problem
id rather wait and see how that character develops
and then judge the actions or look of the character
instead of doing it right off the bat
Yeah, people were just annoyed that there is *yet another alicorn*.
I feel your pain
Then again, a Mary sue could be considered too Disney-Princess-steryotypical. However, I agree that Flurryheart probably isn't a Mary Sue. Just consider how unique, original, and good the cannon/character is.
Why have a Mary Sue/Gary Stu when you can just create an annoyingly powerful OC with a tragic backstory and an edgy personality?
*Dark fic time*
oh sh*t……
That sounds like a mary sue and an edgelord at the same time.. it's like Sasuke
I'm writing a book, so this is really helpful.
Also, I know of a Mary sue in one of the book series i read. This cat is called Dovewing. Dovewing has magic. She was so boring, the writers had to make her fight beavers.
I read this book series, but I haven't gotten to Dovewing yet because the books have stopped being translated in my country :(
Oh my goodness... I feel that. Oh wait! Dovewing has a FLAW SHE LOVES TOO MUCH AND HURTS EVERYONE AROUND HER 😝
Oh no, I’m an Ivypool simp but I don’t think Dovewing is a Mary-sue
When you think about it, a LOT of canon characters are also Mary Sues and Gary Stus. That's pretty much why fans often prefer the deuteragonist or the tritagonist over the protagonist. Or even a more minor character. Disney and Pixar movies are a perfect example of this phenomenon.
The real definition of Mary or Gary stue is a fan made character so there's no way for a official character to be a Mary or Gary stue :>
+LovelyLadyGrimm SouperMani
What's the opposite of Mary Sue???
Probably a very dark edgy character lol
But the name for it~
Vee is Calling An edgelord? x3 Not sure honestly xD
Tyandaga XD
Anti-Sue
Alright how about my character? My sona is different but this character is one I love a lot.
Name: Magnus
Age: 19
Species: Jersey Devil (check them out if you aren't sure what that means)
Personality: He is quiet, timid, and shy.
He later realized his mistakes and helped stop the Pegasus villain.
so isn't Celestia a Mary sue
Depends how you look at it ;p
Akilah Dasig NO! She is literally the devil if you think about it
Akilah Dasig God like characters are genrally an exception, so long as they aren't the main character. She also has a serious problem with deception, and hiding things from her citizens. That causes a lot of problems, and I feel takes her out of Sue category.
Ha ha very funny. 👍🏻
Well she is a pearl with no flaws
Looking back at my original designs for my main OC, she was 100% a Mary Sue! Luckily I watched a few of these types of videos and fixed her up ;w; so crrriinnngggeeeeyyyy...

It’s me again but from a new email times have changed I love Mary Sues I hope them mfers are thriving
Is it considered a Mary Sue if I make my character a daughter of Celestia?A lot of people classify alicorns or any other characters that are somehow related to the canon characters as Mary Sues,so I'm just being careful with my creations 😊
I make alicorn ocs too but none of them are royalty and I try not to make them too powerful
Making her a daughter of Celestia is fine. But you have to come up with a believable reason for why she is.
+Willowclaw's Commenting Channel
I actually think having alicorn OC's not be royalty makes them more mary sue like. There should be a reason for why they are alicorns and they should have all the powers and responsibilities that come with it.
I personally think fans should refrain from making alicorn ocs. Its very...well for me this is pretty much the definition of mary sue. It's like "hey look at me i am so special"
Its ok for lairen faust to have a alocorn oc, she's the creator of the show afterall, but it's not for us, fans.
"my oc is the daughter of luna and sombra!!!1!1 her name is princess midnight moon!!1!!!1 she is an alicorn and is more powerful than all the unicorns in equestria combined!!!!!111!!!!! but she turned evil once like her mum ;-; but when she became good again everyone forgave her because she is a kind and pretty princess!!!1!!!" -hundreds upon thousands of uneducated children
thank you tyandaga for helping these poor people learn how to create a decent character *eye twitches*
0/-10 fake Mary Sue. Change the name to Princess Fantasia Crystal Fanciful Aurora Borealis Sparkle Mystick Aerith Mydnyght Starr Nyghtshade Alabaster Zenith Kaitlynn Moon and then we'll talk.
Ow
Wondergirl 145 dude it's just a joke
supinestargazing My old OC's are the daughters of Luna and Sombra xD They're called Snowmoon and Crystalmoon.
Flaws are fine! Just listen to the song in Season 7 Episode 14!
Do you think this is enough flaws:
Horrible cooker
Super clumsy
Distracted
Takes anger management
Always forgets stuff
Trying to play violin ( bad )
Kind of stupid
Violent (I mean if u anoy her she will kick u)
Super clumsy is not a flaw everyone can be clumsy, getting distracted is not a flaw everyone gets distracted, Cooking is one. think of talent or skills that can come natural to someone but not to you. let's say
one character can't fight, his fighting skill sucks ass but he try's anyway, while His fighting style isn't great or anything he can still make it out of a fight, just not without having horrible scars or bruises to prove it. Flaw's can be worked on but nothing can be perfected, it wont and SHOULDN'T take a character a chapter in a half to learn every style of fighting ever made and come out of every fight top notch and ready to destroy his next opponent.
everyone has flaw's but clumsy and distracted aren't something that is really a flaw, hell i get distracted by things all the time, and believe me when i say I'm clumsy.
are u being sarcastic? cause if you aren't......
^?
pipsonicx3 Clumsy can be a flaw if it's used well.
+Una1 Aww, thank you so much! Your Nova Blast sounds really cool too! I wonder how the two would get along if they came across one another! ^^
my oc has all of my personality in her. RJ is afrade of water mainly cuz i cant swim XD plz dont make fun of me for being 13 and inable to swim
+3crazygirls I have a fear of dreams and getting water on my face. Don't worry about it, you aren't however being too rational.
Not to mention to back up that she was an alicorn, she said she lived in "alicornia"
The tragic backstory is, that they drop a coockie, and they can't eat it anymore.
OH, the HORROR! How TRAGIC! You poor, poor thing!
...Let us put you out of your misery.
Your OC is so cute!! XD
Thanks! =3
When you said "to powerful" i emediately though ONE-PUNCH MAN!
Mary Sue is Scary. O.o
how does Maddy dare to have one around?
It's like brothers, annoying friends and spiders, you just get used to them.
Because she is Scottish. They throw logs for sport,
+Dez Keiz lel i think i know where thats going
Where does it go?
My friend she makes her oc like a mary sue becuz the story about her character she is the ruler of equestria and the princesses are her slaves O.O
personally I think the fandom version of undertale sans is a gary stu,
I mean. when I roleplay with someone. and they are sans. people are literally doing this
"*shoots 10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000
faster blasters at Chara and chara dies* "
and I'm not joking.
like DUDE.
gaster blasters :p
god dammit autocorrect
+Chara Dreemurr gotta go fast XD But same sometimes people make him too over powered
just go "God comes down from nowhere destroy's san and revives chara." done.
Lol I'll do that wo my friend x3
You poor soul. :(
1.) People forget that Sans is literally the weakest character in the game.
2.) People are forgetting the lore of the game
3.) It's old and overused and please just stop
4.) It's not fun
How to fix your mary/gary sue
1.Sad backstory
2.Work for their skill(atleast some of them)
3.Anger isuses/phopbias/can't control their emotion
4.Make them have weakness, i didn't don't mean to make them weak!I mean to not making a charachter powerfull, you can stillmake they more powerful than other OC's but not with much
5.Chose a collor pallete likeble for eyes!And it's done
It's very annoying when someone make a character what is like this:
-Never smiles
-Hates everyone
-everyone hates them
-Is best of fightin'
-Not speaking much
-always in bad mood
...
You know? x((
That would be an Anti-Sue and they're just as bad as Mary Sues since they have no positive qualities to them at all. A good character has both positives and negative aspects to their personalities (just like real people). So it's always best to have a balance of the pros and cons.
+mjangelvortex Yeah and my friend doesn't make anything else than that x((( (btw sorry for bad english)
Embbu
That's a shame.
I mean anti-Sues can actually work really well if you are making a "sadcom" setup. I think that Bojack Horseman is a prime example of this.
subbed :3 i really like the art and video style
Thanks! =3
Meowz! AJ lol so did i
Was kind of expecting more of an appearance from Mary Sue, probably near the end with her saying something the lines of "What's this coat rack saying about me?!"
"To likable" *fangirl warming* AAHHH KINGDOM HEARTS! Lol great vid
but what if they have too many flaws? that also draws a lot of attention and makes more and more people feel sorry for them and want to be their friend, hence, making them a Mary Sue
So it heavily depends on how the character is used and why
It also highly depends on the setting, story, need and character development(this is for a character whose "too flawed" if you put it that way, but it can apply to every other kind of character too i guess).
+Realm★Sprinter wow!!! welp, that somehow makes complete sense to me, thanks!!!
+Eva-Lisa Bekke ohhh, okay (*^o^*)
+HOI I'm Temmie! YaYa! and the sue that has too much flaws is called an anti sue, I forgot to put that in :P
Characters like that are called ragdolls and they can be just as annoying.
People like: My character has two tone eyes/ half demon/ half reaper/ half dragon/ half human
^.^
How can it be half dragon human reaper and
Half demon??
That would just equal 2 wholes maybe if they said 1/4 it could work BUT it would still be a Mary Sue and the different colour eyes is a real thing that my auntie and myself have it's called heterochromia
(Erza The Fairy Hunter) Then say part...
I think half of one of those things is enough, except the demon and reaper is too much
5:30 Why does Twilight have wings? She wasn't born with them.
This actually goes for all ice in General. I like it! I made my first OC ever a Mary sue but I had no idea what this meant, but I changed it so people wouldn't be like that. My first OC was a transformer oc.
Just wanted to ask, is Over-trusting a flaw?
I imagine it would be, although it obviously depends on the situation :)
Yes, over trusting leads to blindness of a situation. It makes it dangerous no matter the situation. Such a them falling for a villains lies, or leading to there mental health being damged.
I always ask myself if the over emotional is a flaw since they can be happy too much or crying to much
You mean naive?
i think so
A have a pony oc, it... -I actually have 2-
Their names are Anilove and cupcake
Anilove (used to be)- most powerful unicorn and a really good flyer. ALICORN. Had no foes and only had friends. Sister: FLURRYHEART?!?!?!
Anilove (now)- an okay unicorn, who has quite a lot of foes and some friends. Loves animals and is now... a unicorn. Family: Unknown
Cupcake (she is sorta new so she doesn’t have an old version)- a Pegasus with a robot leg and a half skeleton wing. Is sorta insane and works for pinkie pie (pinkies creepypasta) helps pinkie make cupcakes out of pony’s
Backstory- ok... short... cupcake was pinkies next victim for the day, and she liked the feeling of pain... pinkimena Dian pie cut off her leg, and cut part of her wing... umm... she laughed and for some reason... pinkie made her... her assistant...? WUT
Ok ok ok... old Anilove was a Mary Sue...
cupcake... I don’t know... I guess not...
EXCUSE YOU!!! That's my art you're using at 4:52. Do you always just take without asking?!
that is very rude for them not to ask before using art or linking back to the artist that owns it and i suspect they might get it off of google -_- maybe report the video if there isnt a way to communicate to them and make them give proper credit? they should've checked who owned the pics first though if they werent commisioned for this video personally
Wow that's terrible! I bet the creator just found your art on google and just used it. Unacceptable
Oh goodness, I'm so sorry >.
So basically, don't make Twilight Sparkle.
Yeah, no. Twilight still has flaws. lol
xramengrlx
All her flaws are just there to make her look like a better person.
She became one after hard work and 3 seasons!
xramengrlx
All of those things make her more perfect.
If she's not a Mary Sue, than Mary Sue's don't exist.
guys, don't forget what he said at 2:25. Our views on a Mary/Gary sue will differ
What if a characters' flaw is the that their a Mary Sue.
GrayWolf Productions their flaw could be having narcissistic personality disorder.
GrayWolf Productions ha good question
You beat the system, I quit.
Now that can make up a good story.
You make a good point about not making a Mary sue there. I liked your video 😒😉
I've tried to degrade power from ocs from when I was like 7. Flaws are really useful, especially if you turn them completely against their strengths.
celestia and flurry heart... god...
Thank you for your response. The name wasn't what I would've expected, but OK.
The Sky Warrior An anti-sue.
My first character was quite likable. She was created in the time I was actually a bubbly little girl. She was amazing in my eyes still now. Her looks were only a little overused. As a cat she was silver and white with green eyes. But I still love her.
