    I think a “true” Mary Sue is a character that bends or completely shatters the established rules of their universe for the sake of making them seem special, plot convenience, etcetera. Anything else is either boring, badly written, has “special snowflake” syndrome, or literally any other adjective or writing term.
    You can have an OP character if the plot or conflict can delve deeper into how the character handles being overpowered. Do they use this power for good or evil, or do they use this power at all? Do they no longer feel exhilaration when faced with conflict because they already know of their inevitable success? Do they love or hate their power? Were they born with it?
    You can have a beautiful/handsome character if the plot or conflict revolves around them dealing with their good looks. Do they acknowledge their attractiveness? Are they in a position where their looks are comprising for the worse? Do their romantic or sexual preference not align with the type of people they attract?
    Mary Sues are made through incompetence and misuse/misplacement of conflict and plot focus. As well as complete ignorance of the established rules of their universe.

    A good way to avoid making your character’s personality’s ‘too perfect’ is to try not to have two polar opposite personalities in one. For example, you can make a character who is extremely kind and sweet, and then when somebody slightly pisses them off they are a ferocious, angry person. I don’t really want to hear the “oh, they have split personality!” I feel like if they did have something that special, it would be a big part of the story.

      Yup smh. There aren't even a lot of good stories/fanfics on Wattpad, and the ones that are highly appreciated are stories that are pretty mediocre (to my tastes), I could understand if it's a phase, as I was in that phase at one point.
      There's hidden gems of writing and unsung heroes everywhere on the internet that get shunned for being out of the standard, and I feel bad for those people who took the time to brainstorm and develop their characters and stories, because their masterpieces are compared to the stuff that I've read on very popular sites/apps like Wattpad, Inkitt or even AO3 and others.
      I really want the works of others to shine, the writers who really deserve all the fame compared to some.
      I'll have to keep looking for the great works buried under the mounds of grammatically incorrect paragraphs and over-the-top cliché plots of others, but at the same time,
      I want those who made the works to improve and rise, because I'd read too.

      Exactly! I just made a comment but then i saw this and I wanted to say i agree. For example my friend drew her oc. And she has rainbow hair in pig tails. But shes a well fleshed out character. She was super proud and posted it to Tumblr. But everyone who commented on it said to stop drawing mary sues and change her design. In her characters story she dyes her hair rainbow because she likes it. It doesnt change her character in any way or cause her to be over powered or extreme or perfect. She just likes it. And it is actually something that causes her chracter problems at school in her story. It adds flaws and problems to her character. So why does it make her a Mary sue?

  • @MagicalMaster

    A good way of thinking about things, is that a good character bends to the rules of the setting. Where with a Mary Sue, the setting bends to their whims. Just remember that and you can easily find your way around it.

    Sorry if this is long. So. I definitely get that mary sues are a problem. I recently had to deal woth a person in a group rp who had a mary sue character they were using and it made it extremely hard to progress in a realistic way because everytime one of us got tired of them being overpowered and came up and a reason to do something else in rp he would just come up with a new power that made it so we had to continue the rp with him. For example he just poofed an entire ice castle into existence and i felt bad that he was being ignored so i sat and did some stuff in the castle with him. But i wanted to go back to talking to some.of the other characters that were around so i said i got cold and wanted to go inside the building and talk to everyone. So he decided he could just make new clothes appear for me and i had to figure out how to keep that scene going. And it all just felt awkward and forced from then on. But also. I dont understamd certain things defining a mary sue. For example rainbow hair. A lot of people seem to equate that feature woth mary sues and assume any character that has rainbow hair is a mary sue. I don't understand that. Like if the character was super over powered and extremely out of place then i would understand it being a mary sue. But just having a rainbow pallete doesnt really do that imo. I have rainbow in real life. Its a rainbow side cut and i love it. But i fear trying to draw a charactef based on my own self image and problems for the sake of rp because i dont want people to see it and assume its a mary sue. When its not. I have real problems and faults which would be included in said character because its supposed to represent me. The rainbow is entirely stylistic choice based off of me. Its not a crazy over powered or perfect thing to have rainbow hair. So why does having rainbow colors immediately mean your a mary sue? Or having too many accessories. Like lots of chokers and bracelets and stuff. Like it looks kind of messy and often times comes off as overdone but not necessarily a mary sue. I feel like the personality of the character and how they are being used should define if its a marysue or not. And not the colors or basic design. Am i just confused about what a mary sue is? I dont understand. I love rainbow palletes and pastels. But i never use that out of fear. Like. Ok i wanna day im not brony. But my sister watches mlp all the time (shes 11) and ive noticed that rainbow dash has faults and stuff. She is easily embarassed and sometimes forgets to not get too wrapped up in herself. But she has a rainbow pallet. Is she a Mary sue for being rainbow? Where is the line? How do you decide what a mary sue is just by looking at it...

    @mrbateman360 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Okay here are some protaganists I want people to see whether they are mary sues or not (also I have not figured there names)
    1st: blue guy
    blue guy was once a knight in the medieveal time things and something happened that made him go to the present times. Now he lived in the present for 5 years and he need to go back and destroy what made him go to the present. His flaw is that he is too uptight about his code of honour and he need to learn to loosen up and he does that by meeting some chick with her gang which consist of a Chinese ninja, a robot, a superstitous japanese women and a cultist. By learning this lesson he can go on to defeat the evil president who is his evil brother
    (spoiler: blue guy and evil president both die)
    2nd: little edgy quiet japanese kid
    little edgy quiet japanese kid is kid who suffers from autism and was blamed for something he did n because of that he depends too much on people even on his little brother. Then something happened to the city that made it snow and hard to escape. His flaw is that he does not know when to speak up and express his emotions since he depends too much on people which makes him unconfident. There in the the story he learns that through the power of himself he can stand up and defeat a Godess with 5 split personalitiey.
    3rd: loud girl
    loud girl is a girl who lives in a place where thing happen. She lived peacfully until Little edgy quiet japanese kid came( except he has grown up) and told her the bad things that are in the place she lives like cults. She needs to fight to remove the cults. Her flaw is that she is too selfish and reckless and she need to learn to be smarter and not dumb so that he can defeat a cult plague guy.
    4th poor edgy guy
    poor edgy guy was a guy who is crippled and sick who is also selfish. But unlike the loud girl he was not cute selfish but edgy selfish. Until an angel of God came onto him telling him to train and stop being edgy. So he meets the loud girl( Who is grown up) and loud girl tell him train to be a spy to defeat villains. His flaw is that he is too edgy and he still need to learn how to not be edgy so that he can defeat a young business man.
    5th loud japanese man
    Loud Japanese man is the son of little edgy queit japanese kid and loud girl. He has a dream he wanted to achieve but was blocked by his mean parents and his short term memory loss. His flaw is that he can lose his awesomeness and become a whiny nerd when things dont go accoriding to plan. After meeting some skinny edgy guy he trains to be better despite his mental illness to overcome his loss of awesomness so that he can defeat a man who hates new stuff
    6th cult man
    cult man is the son of evil president from before who has now resurect and back again to do more evil. cult man before was doing cults and while he was against it he gave up trying and just gave in. After the same angle of God who help poor edgy guy tell hin stop doing cult he stop do it and met all the other protaganists who are still alive. He decided to avenge blue guy so that they can defeat evil president. He has the flaw to give up easily and he learns from all the other charatcers and their stories to never give up so that he can use his red snake to defeat evil president.

      @@TheBusbyBabes It breaks convention is what he means. Sure, there is in-universe logic and reasoning to why it is that way. But Superman is what he is not because he is just a dude like you or me. He is SUPERman. Anyways, not in all cases is superman a mary sue. In some comics/universes, Superman isn't as OP. But in others, he is very much so. He always wins. No matter if he wins in a way that doesn't make sense or it was good execution, he just always wins (again, depending on the universe). Some versions of Superman have tried to make him more 'realistic' by not degrading his overpoweredness, but by making the world around him a sh*t place. The people he saves hate him cuz alien racism or something. Political stuff Superman has to deal with. Etc. etc. This supposedly this is to make him less of a mary sue. But it's just bad writing in my opinion. A bad decision. He is still more of a mary sue, it's just that the world around him has gotten worse. It makes it so that you hate the world and feel bad for superman. Idk, I think Superman should be left as a Mary Sue. Unless they want to experiment and make a new version of Superman.

    • @TheBusbyBabes
      @TheBusbyBabes 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ExploreImagineDefineCreate well hes not overpowered so hes not a mary sue. and in world logic for a charackters power is very important for being not a mary sue. there are several villains and heros who can defeat him and with kryptoniet basically a cripple could beat him into a pulp. so supermans powers make complete sense within his universe and there are enough ways he can be defeated or even killed so he cant be a mary sue by definition xD

    • @ExploreImagineDefineCreate
      @ExploreImagineDefineCreate 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheBusbyBabes Of course of course. But there are plenty of 'versions' of Superman where no bad guy could beat him
      In superhero comics it is important to keep the suspense and tension going, that is why civilians are put in danger and Superman has to save them.
      In some comics, it's not about weather the villain will win vs Superman, but rather will Superman be able to protect the innocent. In this case, imagining yourself as Superman IS WISH FULFILMENT. That's the point. That you could be brave and powerful and able to save those in need.
      But there are cases where the comics focus on villains who want to destroy Superman. In that case it is more about the struggle between Superman and the bad guys, and no-one wants that, so it ISN'T wish fulfillment.

Ever protagonist in the history of storys was supposed to make the reader see himself in it. a mary sue first and foremost is defined by the power it has and wheither the power is explained and makes sense within the universe it exists and that does applie to superman

    Sorry dude, but mary sues are just a staple of bad writing, plain and simple. Now if you write to yourself and FOR yourself, that’s fine. But if you’re writing stories you want others to read and enjoy - like most writers do - asking people to just get over and accept mary sues is just not gonna happen.
    WELL-WRITTEN characters, the ones that drive great stories, are defined more through their weaknesses, faults, and what they can’t do. If a mary sue is the one driving the story, nobody (in their right mind) is going to like them nor the story, because no one is perfect. If you have a perfect character, then there is no story, cuz they’ll always succeed no matter what. Thats not a story, that’s just an “author” giving themself an overly-long hand job. Nobody is gonna care about that.
    So telling impressionable creators not to worry about creating mary sues seems like bad advice...

      WARNING: Funny enough, the following is my OPINION. I was kinda tired when I wrote this so sorry if I sound too rude or have bad grammar. But I just wanted to have a little say.
      Well yeah, if you want to write "good stories" that critics who care oh so much about plot and originality and a whole bunch of stuff that makes a quality writing. But take a look at Naruto. Superman. Similar characters who, while not perfect, are near invincible. (Superman isn't always like that depending on the universe).
      THE ACTUALLY FACT OF THE MATTER is that people DO enjoy overpowered, near-perfect or perfect mary sues. It wishes fulfillment. Any writer with experience and reputable skill will tell you that mary sues just happen. They will also tell you not to write them, but it's the same for a lot of don't do this, do thats. Its a practice thing. It's people who shame others for being into mary sues, telling them you can't like a mary sue cause it's such a bland, bad, stupid trope/writing mistake, that's the reason why you see now a bunch of people doing the same.
      Mary sue is a bad writing device (if you can even call it that), but no way in hell would I tell people that they should never, ever use it. It's a thing that SHOULD be experimented with. Some people find enjoyment in such a character. No shame in that. But you force people to feel guilty for it. That's not cool. Staple of bed writing? Maybe, but no-one is a perfect writer now, are they? So why insist that no-one, not even an experienced writer who knows what they are doing is given so much sh*t for making a mary sue? What if they WANT to break convention, they WANT to make a mary sue with a purpose in the story. NOPE. Most people will toss the story aside, shouting it is garbage, without giving it a chance.

    its not even that there insanley over powers
    the issue with mary sues is that they dont have any right to be as powerfull as they are being super powerfull just because is not interesting at all for the viewer you need to demonstrate WHY they are this powerfull the trials they have faced and overcome to get here the unique reasons that allow them to be who they are

But with that being said, there are people who write flawless characters who are op with no struggles or personality, and that's just not very interesting to read. You can have powerful characters and still make them likable.

      S T R E S S I guess he doesn’t, I believed this video to be very accurate on Mary Sues and how annoying they can be. Although for people just starting they don’t really know any better, they may as well find out that perfect is not what people want in a character. I remember making my own Mary Sues when I first started my writing “career”.
