Fun fact: I actually learned how to split kindling with a knife and also, improved upon fire building by watching you all over the last several years! So, it was cool to see you undergoing that journey of doing it for yourself as well!
Enjoyed seeing Carol learning how to split wood for kindling. I split my wood for kindling by holding on to one end of the stick and chopping the other end. Safer on the hands. I’m also extra cautious when the wood is frozen. Nasty cut a few years ago. Take care
Always so beautiful to watch - so serene. Carol you did a great job kindling the wood and feel free to "chat" with all of us - always here waiting for the next EFRT video.
The early freeze up of the Narrows did not take God by surprise. He will sustain your family through this time- this gives our Father a chance to show you how He can provide. And Carol, I am so impressed with your kindling splitting skills. Truly, there is nothing you can’t do when you set your mind to it!
Another beautiful video! Thanks! The whole time you were walking and sharing your anxieties I kept hearing, “His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness.” It was good to see you work through that. God bless.
Paradise at door step. Wonderful to see you all gearing up for the winter helpful boy Lando very nice 👍 . Be happy safe christmas 🎄🎁 coming soon so beautiful ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🎉😊
Everything is so Breathtakingly Beautiful. An artist behind the camera....capturing all of God's Creation. Has my emotions hanging between Tears and Laughter. Thanks so much for sharing with us!
Loved this video Carol ! I’m glad you learned to make kindling you just never know when that skill will be needed . I loved the beautiful parts of this video , being a woman I respond in my heart to your food making , wanting everything to be cozy for your family for Christmas. The video of the lake with the drone were awesome and as always Lando stole my heart❤😊
We're so glad you enjoyed the video! Lando always steals the show. I’m learning more and more. Just need to keep practicing. Have a wonderful, cozy Christmas. ✨
You’re a great mother! Merry Christmas to all of you from Dennis in California so many millions of people would love to have what you guys have just on the island that’s an amazing place ice snow or sunshine doesn’t matter people would love to have what you do
Carol you are too cute with your Tom Hank's rendition of 'I've made fire!' from that Cast Away scene 😂 It's great that you are learning how to do things you've not done before, I'm 62 and it's never too late to learn. I was just thinking about whether y'all do cold plunges when the next thing you know, there you are taking a plunge! 🥶 You are a brave woman! And that Lando is such a great dog! So full of energy regardless of the weather and cold temps! I'm glad I can watch this from the warm comfort of my home in sunny AZ 🌞Thanks for sharing!
Carol, I love that you try new things and are willing to admit that you haven't firmed up all the skills, but you are trying. I also respect that you share the challenges i.e. early icing up, as well as the beauty and successes. Your skull in the kitchen will make wonderful dinners regardless of needing some ingredients!
Northern Tool in the States(Princess Auto in Canada?) Sells a kindling tool. You hold the wood on a cast Orion blade device and strike the wood with a small mallet or light sledge hammer. Safer than swinging an ax or hatchet near your hands?
All EFRT videos are pretty great but this one is distinguished by Carol's real-time processing of the ramifications of the unexpected early icing closing off access to the mainland. Credit to you, Carol, for your quick assessment, calm reasoning and earlier food preps. Also for acquiring, on camera no less, an important new skill in chopping wood and refining into kindling. It is also great strength and coordination exercise. I enjoyed chopping wood while growing up in Hood River and now practice firewood skills on camping trips during Virginia's warmer months. Weather will always be the big x-factor in off-the-grid situations and an additional character, so to speak, in EFRT's winter cabin series. Am looking forward to seeing how it all unfolds in the months ahead. P.S. - impressive how Pete swiftly dispenses with the perilous tree limb, ably assisted by the ever-adorable Lando! Happy Holidays!
❤❤❤As Always❤❤❤ So Proud of you Carol ,my Grandma always said never be to old to learn something new Every day❤❤❤ The kindling spliter was my cheeper chose after a ER visit and 9 stichs to my my hand and index finger 😆last year this time.stay safe cant wait for all the winter cabin Adventures❤❤❤🙏
When you guys went to get the snowshoes I saw a gold pan on the wall!? Do you guys ever do any gold panning? I’ve never seen you guys do any and I’ve just recently got into it! It’s addictive but SO fun! Great episode! Always love watching you guys!
Nice job on the kindling. You can can feel peace there. Even if it comes with some anxiety. With Starlink, sat coms, helicopters and air boats, you’re not that far from assistance these days days.
I enjoy your videos very much! Just a thought, I would tie a beanie bag around the end of your twine and throw it over the branch or tree and the weight of the beanie bag will bring your twine down and you can even tie twine to a heavier duty rope to pull rope up and over the branch or tree.My arborist who took down some branches and trees around my house showed me this little trick. I thought it was a pretty cool idea.
Omg Carol I loved that you shared your fears as a Mom. I also loved you learning to do the kindling, I find myself wanting to try more things myself. Very inspiring. You and Pete are very good together! Great video❤ wishing you a wonderful Holiday from northern BC😘
That crooked pine tree on the shore in your bay should have a name - I would call it "Old Faithful".... Carol, when you use the axe to chop down the bigger wood pieces, having a wider stance will give you more balance/stability, and if things go wrong, the axe head will less likely hit your legs, since it has space to go through in between... I love the cabin series, it reminds me a lot of my dad's place near Parry Sound...
The magic of snow! ❄️It really is a winter wonderland. ❄️☃️ Bugger about not getting to the store. It snuck up on you. Love your wood chopping Carol. You did such a good job. Merry Christmas to you all from a very hot ( 40°C + yesterday and 38° - 40°C today South Australia ( complete contrast to you guys ). 🎄☃️🎅
What a great way to start our Sunday morning!!! Beautiful in snow. We are in south Florida visiting family. If we could, we would ship an Airboat to you. They are easy to find here.
Eeek… Carol you sometime step up to the stump as you swing the ax. I’m concerned that you’ll hit your foot if you miss your target. Bless you for learning a new skill. That has to feel great.
You might wanna look into a hovercraft that also goes over ice and snow ,water and the travels over land, marshlands, and mud flats does a lot more than your fan boat That’s what I’ve been looking into.
Thank you so much for the kindling instruction! I too am afraid of the process and it often causes me to procrastinate. As a result, i have a truck full of wood that needs to be unloaded and stacked. Then I too need to cut some kindling. It’s been years since I’ve done it. I really appreciate you letting us see your vulnerability occasionally. It’s an inspiration to see you go out and try it first before asking for the help. It’s a good way to learn because you have a better idea of what questions to ask. I’m 64 and have been on a remote acreage in northern Alberta for the last two years. So far I have only asked for help on things that require professional expertise like plumbing and electrical and mechanical. I find I often blow up the project to huge mountain status when it’s a small molehill. TH-cam and folks like you help me to bring it back into perspective. Thank you and Merry Christmas to all. ❤
Thank you for sharing your vulnerability and resilience. I have learned so much from watching and meeting you both. I love watching your life and it has bolstered my journey to adventure and way of being.
Barbecue tongs are a great sacrificial tool to hold the firewood instead of your non-dominant hand while you swing the axe. Replacing barbecue tongs are easier than a hand. As you gain accuracy and confidence with the placement of the axe you will eventually not need the tongs. Even a branch with a forked end will work.
Your a Great Mom Carol and you have these awesome boys and Pete to always share the load. As a Mum, we're always conscious and mindful of others needs before our own because we want everything to be right for them. Thats Love. So, what if Pete and you all, take the snow mobiles on the barge to the narrows and then cross over by snow mobile to the Marina and mainland or hire someone to fly in and out and you all get the last of the supplies and gas. Just thoughts..... I send our prayers for a Blessed Christmas and safe New Year ahead.
Hey love your channel, your island is amazing!!! Have you thought about a Hovercraft rather than a fan boat?? I am from the very South coast of the UK, Portsmouth. We have a passenger Hovercraft that goes across to the Isle of Wight, many times a day.... They cover the huge sandy beach at low tide... They do little ones hear that are great fun to use on any surface. .. keep safe!
Love how I get to start every Sunday morning.Winter sure has come to your island. Lando has stolen the show for me;what a special member of EFRT family.❤
Heartfelt commentary Mom (Carol)......beautiful pictures of nature not seen here in Southern California........THANKS! I'm sure with all your life experiences.....EFRT will make it through the interesting and unique experiences of the cabin iso for this short period! Kindling Queen ROCKS.....good job...now onto the next learning experience! Stay warm! Taco B
You might check the New Orleans, LA area social media market sites as air boats, as they're called here, are pretty common with all the marshes and waterways in south Louisiana. I feel sure that you could find a used one for sale if you search in this area, even though it is a long way from where y'all are in Canada.
Oh my! I'm so glad you guys are better prepared this year. The crystals in the snow looked so beautiful with the sun shining on them. Love how Lando helps you around, so cute. Love and be safe!😘❄VE
looks beautiful....I'm getting the same weather as I live about an hr from you, I live 20mins from town and seen your truck in the area. Watching your video makes my day cause I wish I could live that way...Have a great day guys!!
Another great video guys. Yeah, it’s been so cold here in Michigan. The last couple of days food looks delicious. Good job on the splitting wood Carol Lando. He is such a good helper. 😊 ok 👌🏼🔥🤠🔥Camping Russ out
Super great video. I will never see such spectacular landscapes myself nor experience the quiet hibernation you are privy to but it is nice for me to imagine through your videos. Thx so much.
Hi guys another cracking vlog adventure thanks for sharing. Love how you all work together to replan and adjust your projects and procurement plans for the winter freeze prep. Wishing y'all all the best for the winter. Be well and stay safe. Puck.
That looks so cool. I miss winter in the Rockies. Quick ? How long does it take for dehydration on eggs or other stuff close to that same consistency? Great job on the kindling. 😊
Forget the fan boat…contact US gov for large, cargo-carrying drones. And don’t believe them when they tell you they don’t know what you’re talking about. 😊

Good morning from Surrey British Columbia. In August my husband and I with our youngest 2 kids were enjoying late August week at our favorite lake, Mara Lake. We found you two on You Tube as there was a storm that evening....gosh just hooked on your videos!.. As a mom I totally get it about the shopping and kinda everything. I like to think about helicopter could help you out for say a medical emergency. Thanks for taking us on your serene life.

Hugs to Lando for taking on tasks so willingly with joy.
"We Didn't Expect This - Surprises and unexpected moments make life so exciting!"
20:20 LOL,,,, just a bit of randomness.
What a great episode. Great job with the kindling. You mastered that very quickly.
😂 True.
What a beautiful winter beginning. Thank you for giving us a glimpse into winter in the wild!
Another beautiful video! Thanks! The whole time you were walking and sharing your anxieties I kept hearing, “His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness.” It was good to see you work through that. God bless.
🙏🏻
What a beautiful morning on the island. Carol swinging an axe. You go girl…. Getttin it done….. I love it❤
Winters at the cabin are my favorite. So cozy!!
As a michigander, I used to come to Canada when I was a child, and I must say how I forgot Canada's beauty. ❤
So gorgeous! Thanks for giving us a taste of real winter 💜
Just stunning. Love how all the family including Olando chips in to help. 🥰
Paradise at door step. Wonderful to see you all gearing up for the winter helpful boy Lando very nice 👍 . Be happy safe christmas 🎄🎁 coming soon so beautiful ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🎉😊

This may be my new favorite episode! Watching as you learned to split your own kindling was so special. Lando is such a good helper!
Carol Mission accomplished!!
Loved your determination with the kindling
Im sorry you couuldnt get your shopping done but you are so prepared for a while. I love your cabin on the island. So cozy.

Oh Carol you did great I don’t think I would of been able to pick up the axe lol it probably weighs more than me 😅
You got this kindling down 💪great job, girl power😆👏👊
Sweet day start. Fun wood chopping...good job learning. Lando so wants to help...smart pup.
Have a good week!
Stunning ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Great video just love watching ❤❤❤❤❤
Lando thinks he’s a beaver 🤣😉
looks beautiful....I'm getting the same weather as I live about an hr from you, I live 20mins from town and seen your truck in the area. Watching your video makes my day cause I wish I could live that way...Have a great day guys!!
Cool episode! New camera? Love the new angles and takes!
She'll be making toothpicks now!!😂
Good with the kindling, Carol. Just be careful of the fingers.. By the way, what happened to the barge ??
Absolutely gorgeous . You live in a wonderful spot.
Wear safety glasses? Eye injuries from wood shards are terrible. All the best for the ice process. Cheers ✨
What a beautiful place you get to spend the winter and the holidays! Hope Santa brings you a fan boat for Christmas!!
Happy Sunday! So beautiful! Lots going on at the cabin this time of year! Thanks for showing us your life!
Love your cabin series. What an adventure! Thanks for sharing.
Forget the fan boat…contact US gov for large, cargo-carrying drones. And don’t believe them when they tell you they don’t know what you’re talking about. 😊
Or, use a large Bowie knife as a sharp wedge and hit the tip of the blade with a scrap of wood.
LTVL uses this method with success.

Being without convenience makes us remember of days gone by!!
As much as airboats are it might be better for you to build one than to buy one. I live in Florida where airboats are plentiful and the new one start around 60K.
Wondered if you had ever tried the swedish practice of cleaning your wool sweaters in snow?
I haven't tried that method but it sounds interesting!
Lando 😁he is in another level!!!!😂
It is a skill to learn preparedness. You did well getting freeze dried supplies put up in the past. It is better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. Lesson learned. Dont trust the weather. Storms arise out of no where these days. Why not get some chickens and rabbits for good egg and meat backup plan? What a beautiful place to ride out the winters to come. You are an amazing woman. Challenging yourself to learn skills. Awesome.
You could get shelf milk, it comes in a box is liquid real milk, comes in pints, comes in whole,1% or 2% and I think 🤔 buttermilk. You refrigerate before use and of course after. I use it alot in winter. That powdered milk is disgusting!
Since you have a freezer now you can freeze milk in your freezer
At our off grid cottage I soak kindling in diesel then a couple pieces of kindling infused with diesel, a couple pieces of newspaper to carry them inside, then the diesel in the kindling starts a maintains the flame until the larger logs burn.
Good morning! Beautiful❤
Good morning
That would be nice to sit with a warm cup of coffee or cider. Let your stress go and to me it's like heaven
Another great video. Carol have you ever thought about waterglassing eggs? I waterglass eggs for myself and my daughter
That’s a great idea. Never done it but will definitely try it. Thanks.
Awesome channel, your life choices are a real inspiration, not just the adventure, but the closeness of your family. An idea for kindling is fabricating or purchasing one of those kindling splitters that use a wall mounted lever - safe and easy option.
Can you not get out on a canoe on top of the ice and drive with ice axes/ ski poles? Genuinely curious same principle as fan boat but slower
HI PETER CAROL DAN PETE 👋

Why don't you guys buy one of those air boats like they use in the everglades in the USA. It can go over ice and water
Saving up for one. Definitely need one.
