this video proves how amazingly strong a T3 is !
unlike most cars, there's no engine in front of the car that will enter and kill you when you have an accident. Look at the unexpected short but very effective crumple zone !
Crash tests proved the T3 was one of the very safest cars of it's time. Safer then Volvo's ! Surprisingly, the T3 proved in other tests that it was safer than it's successor, the T4.
On the net there's even a video where they use a T3 that is launched at a very high speed on concrete wall in order to test the wall. On that video you will see it has no crash test dummies in it and no yellow striping on the sides.
music fits excellent with this vid
I owned a 1982 Westphalia, hit a BIG Michigan deer going 55 mph head on one night. Scared the hell out of me, but it didn't do hardly any damage at all to the thing. Didn't even break any of the lights or the windshield. I just wish it had been as resistant to road salt and rust as it was to collisions.
Brian Allen HAHAH that last part
Stop speeding you should only go 40kmph with maximum lights

Wow, Britney Spears has really let herself go...
No crumple zone, your brains probably exit through your nostrils.
+modelcitizen72 Actually VW did very good when designing the frame to help with the impact energy, I've seen a few crashes like these where the person has walked away.
You'll just have to depend on the other car's crumple zone
It does have a crumple zone. The front bumper, and spare tire/carrier on the front underside were engineered to absorb front impacts.
@145thproduction
it doesnt have crumple zones, so the force of the impact just stops the T3 almost instantly which isnt very safe
For it's time it did well!
If I recall correctly, that truck was going 100km/h and had like two tons of cargo in the back.
I don't know why I come back in this video every year it's kinda weird, I wish they'll re-upload an HD version of this video. 😗
Now _that's_ some Deutsche Ingenieurskunst right there.
am i the only one who laughed at 0:37 ?
2:40 was actually pretty funny too :P
BGKO1992
HAHA
tony. must be what happens when u throw it
BGKO1992 No, me too :)
no i laughed to
This later, redesigned VW van was clearly safer than the earlier ones. One of my brother's friends ran one into a utility pole in about 1961 and damaged his legs forever. There was no crumple zone then, nor any strength to protect your body - the front end got immediately squished, and your body came right after that.
If you say it was in 1961 he crashed into a Volkswagen T1 Split Window bus, one of the first to go on the market
Crumpling is desirable. It is the sudden stop of motion that is lethal.
well theres not much of a front to crumple.unless YOU wanna be the crumple zone.the energy is absorbed by th other car
Vault Dweller hence why it's still not safe. Poor design.
Jeffcatbuckeye whatever, theres plenty other trucks to buy
Jeffcatbuckeye itz a 1980´s design and much safer than other cars of the time. Here´s a .pdf in german showing the crash behaviour of some other vans of the time www.t3-infos.de/images/Crashtest_T3.pdf
@TheCottonTop the VW transport T3 shown in this video had quite a high level of saftey for a van some 30 yrs ago. The engine is in the back and would not intrude into the passenger's compartment. This car was built to last. The video showing a T3 pick-up was a security test for concrete walls, to withstand terrorist attacks. The VW was loaded with about 2.400 lbs on it's back and was smashed to the wall at around 65 mph. The destruction ceased when the concrete load itself finally hit the wall.
good crash test of old vw t3 1979-2002
@Brian Studt, Actual this van is VERY safe, Many people have been in crashes in these and walked away.
i remember my father crashing his, he ended up fine
i survived a crash at 60mph with such a van it was winter and i crashed into a small lorry that was standing on a sideway and i hurt my leg because i wasnt sitting right but the doors i could still open and i checked the van and drove home so that is a really good car!
better than I thought xD
the roof is amazing in the roll over test
...with the Shire Horses, Mark (Radcliffe) and Lard, doing the backing vocals - "And I...". Ahhh, good times!
That sudden braking with the green van, dayum, the rotors would come off, lmao
Nice, when car is empty... =D
haha xD ikr ! xD
yeah but the car only goes like 30mph when it's full and not breaking down aha
Sakra, ty jsi fakt všude :D

@andersonquinn23 First, the van does have 3 point seat belts (0:48), and second, the car used special crash beams in the front end to absorb the impact (2:14). I'm not saying it's the safest or strongest car in the world (you're right on that point), I'm just saying that it was considered extremely safe for when it was made.
i love how it still pushes the other car out of the way and keeps goin"
You want the vehicle to crumple IF there's something between the passenger compartment and the impacted object. If the passenger compartment crumples and you're in the very front of the vehicle (as is the case with this), then at the very least, it'll be crumpled into your legs. Worst case, the back end of the vehicle has completely squished everything in the passenger compartment.
if you own one of these, you have to really love it... and if you do so, you will drive safe and won't crash in a wall at 50 km/h
I have one , 1990 weekender , and it's awesome!!!
I have a 1985
Gotta keep that spare fully inflated in the carrier below the front seat - note from the underside shot that it absorbed the shock against the horizontal frame member!
Lol! This like driving around in a Nokia! :P
My fav vw van ever
I'm surprised it held up so good.
wooow!! I am surprised... very good crash test
VW K70, if I remember it was a design they took over from NSU. It was VW's first front wheel drive car.
Deadly vehicule! Too solid.
Музыка идеально подходит к данному видео)
No doubting the strength of the structure and safe for this TYPE of vehicle. However, with the location of the front passengers so close to the impact area there is very little ‘crush’ space so deceleration would be a problem. This was at just 50kph. Much faster and your looking at serious internal injuries due to deceleration regardless if the structure holds up on not.
Geez, that van is tough.
Maybe it's just me but it's like vans or cars without a crumple zone so they just make the front 10 times harder
@helipro555 glad you noticed. I have personally driven a 9 passenger T3 and I do know what I am talking about.
Give it a 50km/h offset, lol
@bnsgreech If you read the tech specs on that report, the cargo area was loaded with weight, to simulate normal cargo that vehicle would be carrying - which is much more weight than the non-transporter vans can carry.
Nice oldschool. :)
Wow, much better than I expected. Its too bad their not that reliable.
ese furgón con airbag y cinturones de seguridad en todos los asientos, seria el vehículo mas seguro del mundo!!!!. MUY BUEEENO
Our beloved campervan for Summer is a death trap! *NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!*
Loving the music though.
@MoizeProdigy that video you refer to has a transporter loaded with 1 ton of concrete. That's more than official cargo weight (T3 transporters go to 950 kg or so)
indestructible
Here in Brazil we are used to say that "VW Bus' front bumper is the driver's chest".
Dude these t3's would demolish i destruction derbys!
I wonder what would happen if they did side and offset crash tests.
@Shemassault
you are right but the t3 doesn't have much to crumple at the front end without killing the driver
Incredible!
Especially comparing to chinese version of this same truck.
rock solid
This music beats being rick-rolled or Cartridge Tilted...
I feel quite safe in my T25 now, still wouldn't want to experience a head on though!
Song is by Travis. Where did you take SOAD from?
@25tab IN WHAT WAY? im happy to say i love the waterboxer in my vanagon. the waterboxer is a very well built engine! it has the balance advantages of the old stand ups. and its water cooled. i love cruisein down the street with all 90 horses on tap!
Я плакал...
А сейчас ещё плачешь?
que buena camioneta
@helipro555 Oh, it does. A 9 passenger van has 9 seatbelts. Surprise, surprise.
Very nice +1
フォルクスワーゲン・バナゴンの衝突実験ですね。
0:37 LOL BEST PART OF THIS VIDEO.....
XD
It’s is funny
0:31 - Brakes like a tank! hit the pedal and stay. Made in Germany!
@hollaender91 i think i read that it was carrying a fair bit of weight in the back too
it is stronger as i thought
Good music.
Isn't Ironhide from the original Transformers based on this vehicle? very fitting..
DAMN! This van is BEAST. Fuck having a crumple zone, just use the other car as one!
There have been other videos that contradict this video about the safeness of the VW3.
muy buen vehiculoo ¡¡¡¡¡¡ yo pence q chocabas en uno de esos y se rompia todo
@CountryHouseGent Hey, BMW were using cadavers up until 1987 so these guys have it easy... lol!
safe for it's time, but wow, no crumple zone = worst whiplash!
The song is from Travis
I love the t3
The fact that the car doesnt crush is a BAD sign. The passengers take more energy of the crash instead of the car
sweet !
I like it i going buy me a few
you have to wonder who's bright idea it was to put the driver and front passenger in the crumple zone
Maybe they should crash test one of these again......now they've got about 30 years worth of rust weakening them haha
I’ve seen some overloaded and they crumple, just hoses to show the dangers of overloading, lost the video link just search up t3 overloaded
oh man the whiplash would be horrible
01:00 busters' grandpa!!!! lol
It will destruct your internal organs.
I really really need the name of the song or at least any hints for it please. can't find it anywhere :(
MINUTO 2:15 EL AUTO COLOR AZUL 🚗🔵Y LA CAMIONETA ANARANJADA 🚐🔶.
They needed to reposition the stearing wheel and put airbags there
on another videos the t3 is full smashed with just 70 km/h
So strong body! but whole impact energy is going through bodies of people inside.
Ha ha! 1:22 That's a secret :) why front isn't missing after impact. Clever idea with that spare tire location xD
Yes the T3 is strong, but if you look at the video it has virtualy no crumple zones!
Therefore the force of a 50mph crash would all be transfered onto your body!
Not necessarily considering that it is a flat-front van from the 80s, it had several crumple zones such as the steering column, steering wheel, dashboard and part of the front bumper. Without getting into the cabin, the Volkswagens of previous generations are unsafe, even if it hurts
@MegaPR2
What crumple zone?
Better than actually golf
I would not want to be in a crash with this at all!!
"50 km/h" that sure reminds me of dieselgate
jak buldożer haha btw lepszy crash test niż współczesne samochody na to wygląda ;p
The pickup's suck at crash testing, but the panels and passenger vans look to be good.
safe any speed
song is by travis.a cover of shitney spears
Guys i am so confused, i have seen a crash test of the same car from channel called wowt, and result were scary
