      @ that’s actually a good position to be in. A lot of people have formed a strong bias toward the legacy models. I feel this keeps them from really giving the ARC a shot. Most people do not handle change well. You are lucky that you will be seeing them both for the first time. I also have a video on the Surge if you want to check it out. Any questions you have afterwards, I will be glad to answer! Thanks for the comment!

      @@FloydCotton-hx4jh I’ve seen both vids now and sounds like the surge is for heavy duty tasks. I really like the one hand capability of the arc which leans me more to it. One this taking me away is how the arc seems not as sturdy. I’ve seen reviews of the bit driver not tightly holding the bit like the surge aswell as the handles having some five to them when squeezing. I don’t know if that will affect the longevity of the tool. I want something reliable

    • @FloydCotton-hx4jh
      @FloydCotton-hx4jh  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @ the Surge is built like a tank. It’s as heavy as a tank as well. If you don’t mind the weight, the Surge is a fine tool. After over a year of use…. The ArC has proven just as reliable. There is a bit of flex in the ARC, but it doesn’t look to me to be an issue. People are just really used to the overbuilt platform of the Surge. And they are really just looking for reasons not to like the ARC. There are dozens of photos online showing broken Surge. And I know it has been around longer…..so that does play a factor. The only ARC issues I have seen are people claiming the magnet architecture failed. I don’t think those claims are valid…..I can’t see how that would fail. I also see the cutter issue, but that issue has been around a while. I have a Wave with bad cutters on it. It’s more of a cutter manufacturing problem than a specific tool problem. All that being said, I own both the Surge and the ARC….and I choose the ARC every single day.
      Thanks for watching both my videos! I really appreciate that!

    The steep price is partly due to the made-in-USA aspect. Many requested Leatherman to move more of its production to the US. Now the plier head says USA on it. Only P-series tools have the USA on the plier head.

    Im a carpenter, and I just ordered the arc. Thought about the surge but the tool set and free platform sold me on the arc. I agree that the magnacut isn’t really necessary for a multitool, just a way for them to charge extra. If they made a tool with the arcs toolset and the robustness of the surge that would be ideal I think.

    • @FloydCotton-hx4jh
      @FloydCotton-hx4jh  หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@logancausier I think you will be happy with the ARC. The one-handed operation really comes in handy in areas like carpentry. It is light and tougher than people think. The Surge is a tank. But how often do you really need a tank? There is always more use in a scalpel than a broadsword. Though there is a time for both. I have carried the Surge for many years….and now I carry the ARC. To me, it just makes more sense. I truly hope you love it. I would love to hear more about your experience with the tool. Please do not hesitate to share your experience.

      They added the Magnacut because of P4/P2 user requests, not because they wanted to raise the price and lose sales due to the expense. Kudos to Leatherman for listening to their customers. Arc is pretty good. Only two things that I would change would be a older style eagleclaw can opener with that v-style wirestripper and wave/charge style blade shape. My charge tti blade is much better for puncturing and slicing when compared to arc's smaller/bulkier blade. They could also made that cuthook for saw or somewhere else. I just love that on Charge tti. Perfect tool for ripping off old zipties. I'am pretty much for that situation where U were yearses ago. I’ve got mixed feelings about the Leatherman ARC. On one hand, it’s like the perfect combo of the Wave and the Free P4-ditching all the useless tools and focusing on what’s actually useful. In that sense, it’s as good as, if not better than, both of them. But then there’s the downside: the early issues with the broken cutter and the steep price tag. Honestly, it feels more like a really cool toy (which I totally loved playing around with) than a hardcore heavy-duty tool. For the tough jobs, I stick with my Charge, and for something lighter, the Wave’s my go-to. I ended up keeping the ARC for a bit just to mess around with it before eventually giving it to a friend. Can’t let such an awesome tool just sit around gathering dust, right?

    • @FloydCotton-hx4jh
      @FloydCotton-hx4jh  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@Joe_Yang564 ultimately, we all have to decide what tool we prefer. There is no perfect tool for everyone. I can tell you from using the wave and charge for years that I am more than familiar with these tools. They are great. The ARC can do everything they can and there are things the ARC can do that they can’t. For me, THAT is the difference. One-handed outside access to ALL tools is extremely important to me. The cutter issue was not an ARC issue….it was a defect in the manufacturing of the replacement cutter itself and was easily remedied. And I agree with you, the ARC is expensive. But I attribute that expense to the MagnaCut blade, and that too could be easily remedied. I would love to see an ARC with a P4 blade, or an S30V blade, that would bring the price down to a reasonable price point. But even at the higher price I would still choose the ARC over any other model without hesitation. Thank you for your comment. I really appreciate the feedback. Thank you for watching my video as well!

    • @Joe_Yang564
      @Joe_Yang564 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@FloydCotton-hx4jh Totally with you on this! If the ARC came with the same blade as the Wave and a lower price tag, it could easily replace the Wave, Charge, and even the P4 in a lot of ways. But I wonder if that would backfire on Leatherman-it might cannibalize their own product lineup, leading to confusion and a drop in sales. After all, multitools aren’t exactly a mass-market product, so maintaining a balanced lineup is probably a big deal for them.
      That said, using the ARC hard in a "beat-up-your-gear" kind of way just feels wrong. It’s so beautifully designed that it’s almost like a work of art! Sure, it can handle a lot, but something about scuffing up that sleek look feels... criminal, right? Guess it’s all about finding the right tool for the job.

      @@sv1201 great question. I feel it is the knife industry using what most people don’t know as leverage to charge them more. I mean, honestly…. Most steels made these days if properly heat treated and machined are absolutely amazing. And most people are never going to use an expensive knife as a beater anyway. It’s just brag and eye candy most of the time. That’s just my opinion. I have many, many knives with all kinds of steel. How about those huge holes in the saw and especially the file, aren't they bothering? The Wave that i have has more uniform file.
    Quite wise words about the steel quality. I tend to cut mushrooms with the knife, so any metal except mercury would do the job. I secretly admit though that the super steel fascinates me some bit...
    I like that they left off the hole from the awl for extra strength. I doubt anyone has ever sewn with the awl. Poking holes and scraping are the jobs it has to do. I like the scissors too. Over all, this seems a good set of tools.
    I don't know why they rejected their good peculiar multi-purpose can and bottle opening tool that also had a wire stripper, and put the boringly common dedicated can opener instead? It's not more effective in the task, and as the cans usually have an opening clip nowadays, the dedicated opener gets quite useless. It should definitely have those extra functions in it to be justified.

      The holes in the file and saw have never given me any problems. There is plenty of file space to never really notice the hole. And with the saw, it isn’t an issue. I would rather have a one handed opening system than a nail nick platform for sure.
      Steel is a funny thing. Most people do not realize that steels are a collection of elements in powder form that can be modified in so many ways. And there is no real regulations defining the composition of any particular recipe. That’s why we have knives that are stamped with the same identity that behave differently.
      I have used the awl to sew. A few times actually. I have repaired tarps and sails, I have attached rigging to kayaks and structures. It is useful, but you may be right…..only to a rare few individuals.
      The can opener drives me crazy. The old talon-style can open was SO much more functional. You and I absolutely agree on that.

    The ARC is a fine piece of engineering for sure, but it has not replaced my OG Supertool for three reasons:
    1. Comfort. The edges of the handles and the exposed section of the file (when closed) on the ARC bite into your hand a bit when using any of the handle tools. You REALLY notice it when you’re using a tool that requires some grip strength (like the saw, or the blade when cutting though dense material). The smooth, rounded edges of the OG Supertool handles provide a much more comfortable grip surface.
    2. Driver reach (particularly with the Phillips driver). I recently had to attach legs to a medium-sized LED display. The screws were recessed into the inside of the legs maybe 3/4 of an inch, through an opening that was maybe 3/8 of an inch wide, and the screw was probably #0 or #1. The Phillips driver on the OG Supertool worked great. The Phillips bit on the ARC/Wave bit driver would have been too stubby to reach the screw.
    3. The bit adapter that fits on the Phillips driver on the Rebar/ST300 also fits the medium flat driver on the OG Supertool and PST, so I can still use the Leatherman bits on the classic multitools.
    The great thing about the Leatherman line is that there really is something for just about everyone. I get why people love the Wave/Charge/Surge series so much, and the ARC is a brilliant addition to the family. I still believe the PST and OG Supertool have something unique to offer, which is why I still carry them.

    I've had mine for 6 months,I am completely disappointed with it. The wire cutters broke under minimal demand, the driver bit falls out, the tools could be far better (no one who spends £260 on a multi tool needs a can opener - remove it, put the small screwdriver on same side, free up space on other side to make those tools - prier/awl, thicker and more robust), the pliers aren't great (the anniversary edition with adjustable resistance should have been included in this for the price), the blade (while in fairness, very user friendly in terms of access) is not particularly/noticably better than other blades (IMHO, Im not a professional re blades but for me does not represent identifiable value). It's totally and utterly overpriced for what it is, have gone on to spend more money to buy individual bespoke EDC tools of much better use, practicality and quality. I would not recommend this - main reason is that it represents extremely poor value for money.

      @@norbarellis well, I suppose it isn’t for everyone. One thing I have learned is that Leatherman and multitool carriers often disagree on specifics. The wire cutter issue wasn’t a ARC issue, it was a manufacturing mistake in the replacement cutter component. Leatherman kindly replaced the defective ones if you requested that. And I do not have an issue with my bits falling out, they hold tight. As far as the toolset goes…..I like it. I feel like it is one of the better offerings from leatherman. I hope I'll never be pinned by the wrist on a rock outcropping and need to cut through my arm to free myself, but if I am, I want a tool in my kit capable of doing the job! @ I love everything you just said. And I absolutely agree with you. There is a breakpoint however where things get really stretched beyond practicality. I feel there is a fulcrum between cost and value. And a lot of people these days have no balance. They will buy garbage and wonder why it isn’t quality. And on the other side, they will spend a fortune without getting any real value for their money. There is a middle ground I try to keep myself balanced on. I don’t always succeed, but I try.
      Thanks for the perspective. And thank you for the comment. I appreciate you watching my video!

    The idea of using magnets as retention kinda bugs me. Magnets over time lose strength, especially if exposed to heat. Also the fact that I have to be mindful of what's nearby (mechanical watches, credit cards) can be mentally taxing.

      @@Av0cad0YumYum I can see your point. Time will tell, I suppose. So far I have had zero issues with the magnetic architecture. Thanks for your comment!

      Sure but magnets can be given back their strength, just like a blade

      @@JesusPerez-yc6yu that’s a very good point. I suppose time will tell.

      @@JesusPerez-yc6yu "just like a blade..." not the best analogy since a dull blade essentially lost the edge and metals that are forever lost. That's why knives that have been sharpened for many years are slimmer than when it was new. That said, yes you can hypothetically disassemble the arc on your own, take out the magnets (assuming they weren't shattered), and re-magnetize them with a much stronger magnet.

      Magnets around a metal file is absurd. The shavings can get gunked up.
