I went to a Gong Show taping in 1978. They made 5 shows in a row (after 3 you had the option to leave, more people were waiting outside). I sat in the front row and Chuck walked over, I shook his hand, then found out he came to see his daughter who was sitting next to me. Also shook hands with Gene Gene. Anyway, I always thought Chuck got the idea for his shows from the first reality show I can remember - Candid Camera that first aired in 1948! It starred regular people, and, like Gong, they often looked like fools, but the participants wanted to be on it. Well done, Chuck!

Just out of a romantic love break up, working a horrible night job with no future, and a list of other life-crushing events I knew 3:00 each afternoon I would have a little joy out of life. Thank God my life changed to success, and joy, but so wish I could have spoken to Chuck in those dark days of his about the gong show. "Chuck, you may have saved my life" May you RIP.

Chuck Barris was my father's first cousin. He always had me call him "Uncle Chuck". When he became successful, he lost any time for his family, and I remember Chuck's mother half-joking to me that she had to go through three secretaries to make an appointment to get her son on the phone, and he had the secretary tell her "tell my mother I have 10 minutes for her on the phone, and not a minute more". My father used to take me Saturday mornings to Chuck's house on a cliff in Malibu, and he was very nice and welcoming, as he was usually just alone there.

Chuck Barris was an important figure in American television history. His production company was the only effective competitor to Goodson-Todman Productions in the game show production market for the three commercial US TV networks during the 1960s and 1970s.

Kevin Rose: I recall that later in the show's run, the gimmick became DISCO GENE, THE DANCING MACHINE. Gene, and THE UNKNOWN COMIC, were my favorite 'regular' acts! What a crazy show! Great memories from my teenage years! Thanks for the laughs, Chucky Baby! Rest in peace, Sir.

My experience as a potential gong show contestant wasn't as extreme as driving from Michigan and living in Hollywood in my car, but it was somewhat analogous. I was in southern california for two weeks summer camp with my Marine Corps Reserve unit. So, OF COURSE, I figured why not hitchhike to Hollywood and try out for the gong show, I played piano and sang. Well, they wanted to know about contacting me. I said I would only be there for another week and they didn't seem thrilled with that fact.

    • @muffdiver240
