"Who am I here?" Is such an underappreciated line in horror. Like obviously the people who know this movie know the line, but it deserves the same recognition as other famous horror lines.
I always compare the original delivery and the remakes. Preferring the original delivery over the remakes. I show both clips to friends and most agree that O Quinn's delivery showcase's far more confusion and panic as a man's world is torn apart before him. Meanwhile the remake is more anger and rage forcing him into a psychotic break.
To me, The Stepfather has one of the best opening sequences in horror history. You see him washing blood off of himself and shaving so you know he's already killed somebody and is trying to make a run for it but the shot revealing that he killed his wife and child still packs a punch in spite of that knowledge. Then, you follow it up with him casually walking out of the house whistling as if nothing happened underscores how evil just blends in and how it's often the people you least expect.
Came back to rewatch this after it got a mention in the Mouse Trap kill count. Genuinely love it when little known flicks are covered, as it helps make them reach a wider audience they likely never had. May these niche counts never end :)
Absolutely loved the shoutout to researcher Bella at 9:48. Not enough big channels give proper credit to their teams as talented individuals, and I've noticed that a lot of the Dead Meat team has been getting a lot more shoutouts and recognition ever since the new era with folks like Zoran and Chelsea hosting their own episodes and the intro including the "and show you how they were made" line. Seems like a great team to work for and these all around improvements are certainly appreciated.
It's so chilling too. You could even further extrapolate it to be a metaphor about living a fake life, if you were so generous and if you made this movie in the last 5 years instead of in the 1980s. It's so good.
The thing O'Quinn understood is that the Stepfather, despite his actions, is ultimately a tragic figure, forever chasing something he'll never achieve because the "perfect family" does not exist. That scene where he forlornly looks at the other family shows the inner sadness of the character.
Terry O'Quinn is one of my favourite Actors since his Role of John Locke on Lost. He's amazing in it, watching Lost just for him is worth it. I remember watching the Stepfather Movies about 10 Years ago for the first Time and he's just amazing in this one Prost & Cheers from Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps
He's just an abusive loser stuck in his own fantasy of perfection. Seen it before. It's tragic, sure, but ultimately his own fault, and he deserves every bit of misery that he brings upon himself.
I'm not gassing you up at all when I say that this might be my favorite year for the channel(s) so far. You've been killing it with the behind-the-scenes stuff, Chelsea's been great on the podcast, and all your side projects have been a total hit for me. I've been looking for a sort of horror variety channel on TH-cam for years since I wasn't around during the height of Elvira, Svengoolie, etc. and Dead Meat has been IT for me for six years. Keep on killing it!
I agree!! Ive been following for a while now and I absolutely love this channel. James and Chelsea make the perfect duo for this type of channel. And I love their fun podcasts. I still haven't seen all of the videos but I will!!!
My mom and step dad just recently got a divorce and my biological dad died when I was a kid so I’ve been really struggling with this being my first fatherless Father’s Day in a bit so I was really happy to watch this kill count and feel a bit better about today. Another great video Dead Meat team keep it up!
He was TRULY incredible in this film. I would argue he deserved an Oscar nomination for it. Plus, the opening? To this day, I consider it one of the most horrifying, chilling openings in ANY film - on par with the ending of Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer.
my father passed away 3 weeks ago, so today is gonna be rough for me. but james, you and the team never fail to brighten my days up when you drop videos. thank you so much for what you do 🖤
This channel means so much to me. Not only is this a Father’s Day kill count but it’s also my birthday today Edit: just want to say everyone that has wished me a happy birthday is so kind. I hope whoever shares the same birthday with me has a happy birthday too!
I saw the remake when I was a kid, ironically living with my own nightmare stepfather (not a killer, just emotionally abusive and homophobic), so I appreciate getting the chance to compare it to the original. I really like how it goes more psychological than slasher. That feels appropriate given how it's exploring the manipulative tactics of an abuser, how they wear a false face to ingrain themselves into your life, and only start to show their true nature once they’ve gained some authority and power.
I watched this film for the first time because of the Kill Count. It was pretty good! I'm so impressed with James being able to do Father's Day stuff on the channel despite losing his dad. Today is my first Father's Day since losing my dad and it's so difficult. Makes me appreciate James's work even more. ❤
James, I’d like to reach out and say that I hope you have a good Father’s Day. I know days like this can be especially hard. Your father is watching you and is so proud of the work you’re doing. Keep growing, keep remembering and keep healing. ❤❤

9:40 The reference to They Might Be Giants! Yes, thank you Dead Meat! Birdhouse In Your Soul is the catchiest song ever! I always love finding what James and the team know about
I've had various They Might Be Giants songs stuck in my head for the last few weeks, and Birdhouse in Your Soul in particular for the last few days - so to suddenly hear the same lyrics that are in my brain, being spoken aloud in a Dead Meat video, was fun, but also very weird!
The Stepfather (1987) is one of the most underrated horror movies of all time with a phenomenal performance by Terry O'Quinn as the main villain and it has one of the most underrated Final Girls in the Horror Genre.
honestly was about to say that! i always feel spoiled as a tmbg fan when they get referenced on the kill count, but having the reference be to my single favourite song by them was crazy
When I was working on my master's degree my final project was on familicide/family --people who kill their families. John List was a case I illustrated in it. But one of the "subtypes" are the "disapointed." But of the group of (almost always men) who see their family as possessions/extensions of themselves and when the family fails to perform to expectations they are destroyed to "punish" them. John List also claimed he was saving his family from not only financial ruin but the "sinful world" which would corrupt them and the murders would save their souls and send them to heaven.
If you don’t mind me asking, what was your master degree? I assume it’s forensic psychology or forensic mental health? It’s interesting that you’ve mentioned John List because I always think of him when I watch this film because his profile is exactly like the character from the film. Also I always got the impression the film took inspiration from John List, but I can be wrong because John List murder his family after this film came out. If I’m wrong, please let me know.

came from the "Mouse Trap" KC after being reminded of this underappreciated cover, and it IS underrated! Will probably give this a few more views to bump up its vierwership 😅😅😅
I remember my dad bought a bootleg copy of the remake when I was a kid. It ended up being this version, and I’ve been in love with it ever since! Thanks Dead Meat for doing a kill count!
James is such a genius, I don't know if he did it on purpose but at 15:24 "how many kills did we count in lisa frankenstein". If you look at the "kill counts you may have missed playlist", Lisa Frankenstein is the next video in the playlist
Hats off to James covering this film with losing his dad i lost my dad last September its still hard but seeing this kill count really helped, Been fan of Terry O'Quinn since lost great actor but hadn't seen stepfather all way through until recently hes fantastic, so well done James and the team.
Absolutely love this channel. Thank you for the great videos. I currently been going thru a health scare and just not doing so well and yea these videos have really been a help to me get my mind off stuff and yea just kinda escape this scary time. So again thank you these videos are awesome!
They verified the fact that the girl is 16, and then they had her be naked for so long, I watched this when I was probably 16 too or even a little younger. Gratuitous nudity of a character that's supposed to be a minor is creepy to me.
This channel has been so much fun to watch and I haven’t been this committed to any other channels on YT. Thanks for helping me enjoy movies more than ever before and introducing me to new ones that I never would be able to find on my own. James and Chelsea and Zoran have been a joy to know. Happy Father's Day. I was just thinking the other night, "I wonder if James has done a kill count on Stepfather."
10:59 Wait, my dad's a plane guy, what does THAT mean?!
That means he's D.B. Cooper.
😧
@@DeadMeat can you do the other stepfather movies and the dentist movies?
@@purepessimisthe did the dentist movies
Let’s get a moment of respect for James’ late father as well. Awesome episode :)
Happy father's day dude.Sorry about your dad, and may he rest in peace.
I loved this movie and I loved James covering it. I know this must be a hard day, James, but just remember your Dad lives on in you.❤
A Killcount On Fathers Day 🐐 GREAT WAY TO START MY MORNING . Happy Fathers Day To All The Fathers 💙
I'll happily watch this again to support this movie instead of The Mousetrap

came from the "Mouse Trap" KC after being reminded of this underappreciated cover, and it IS underrated! Will probably give this a few more views to bump up its vierwership 😅😅😅

16:59 Hell Yeah Totally Killer Kill Count
I remember my dad bought a bootleg copy of the remake when I was a kid. It ended up being this version, and I’ve been in love with it ever since! Thanks Dead Meat for doing a kill count!
James is such a genius, I don't know if he did it on purpose but at 15:24 "how many kills did we count in lisa frankenstein". If you look at the "kill counts you may have missed playlist", Lisa Frankenstein is the next video in the playlist
Hats off to James covering this film with losing his dad i lost my dad last September its still hard but seeing this kill count really helped,
Been fan of Terry O'Quinn since lost great actor but hadn't seen stepfather all way through until recently hes fantastic, so well done James and the team.
Happy Father's Day Please Interview Lisa Soberano of How She Made Her Hollywood Debut in Lisa Frankenstein
No
He mentioned it in the Lisa Frankenstein kill count, James doesn't do interviews like that
I am so happy that he mentionned They Might be Giants by singing birdhouse
I think 7:22 has another TMBG reference too. That line is from She's an Angel.
The mouse trap count brought me here lol

I have now officially watched every currently released year 8 kill count, and I'm so excited for more!
LOVING the They Might Be Giants references!! (7:30 and 9:40)
James should wear a diamond jumper and tie more often. He looks like the fan favourite character of a soap opera.
*sweater vest
@@Justin_North oh, so that's what they call it.
I aint gonna lie James looks fucking slick in that suit, way to go brother!
Absolutely love this channel. Thank you for the great videos. I currently been going thru a health scare and just not doing so well and yea these videos have really been a help to me get my mind off stuff and yea just kinda escape this scary time. So again thank you these videos are awesome!
A health scare? Does that mean doctors follow you around yelling boo?

Underrated horror movie one of my favorites of all time
I’m still hoping for a Kill Count for the sequel.
They verified the fact that the girl is 16, and then they had her be naked for so long, I watched this when I was probably 16 too or even a little younger. Gratuitous nudity of a character that's supposed to be a minor is creepy to me.
Yup. You can film a shower scene at the end of the film that doesn't have nudity, she's still vulnerable. Class over trash.
@SillyBeans-m1l Like watching underage girls showering?
WAS THAT A THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS REFERENCE? I LOVE THIS CHANNEL!!!
Edit: TWO THEY MIGHT BE GIANT REFERENCES????
Came here from the Mousetrap video.

15:32 how James actually feels 😂
Here to give this kill count some love after the Mouse Trap kill count

@@DarklordKermit77 Already did when I watched it the first time. I know how TH-cam works my dude lol
This channel has been so much fun to watch and I haven’t been this committed to any other channels on YT. Thanks for helping me enjoy movies more than ever before and introducing me to new ones that I never would be able to find on my own. James and Chelsea and Zoran have been a joy to know. They seem like they would be fantastic friends to have. Thank you so much!
Happy Heaven Fathers Day to your dad as well James, I just lost a family member to cancer 2 days ago so I can relate but I hope you have a good day with your family
