      It's super cool, but I don't understand how someone's father could be alive in a time when his son was leading him, then die in the past? How did his dad exist in the future if he died? Maybe I just suck at understanding time travel.

    • @gagetaylor192
      @gagetaylor192 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +49

      @@WhiteOutify Time travel is quite difficult to understand especially depending on the rules a certain movie uses. But the way I understand it is it's a chicken and the egg situation. Kyle being the chicken and the egg. It's like in the flash comics. Eobard Thawne (the reverse flash) is from the future and he idolizes the flash on an obsessive level. He wanted to be the flash so badly that he replicated the event that created the flash and gave him speed. When he travels to the past to tell the flash that he'll carry on his legacy he accidentally discovers in the flash museum that not only is he destined to become the reverse flash and be the flash's greatest enemy, but that he's the only one the flash had to kill in order to stop. So if I understand it right, it's what's called a "predestination paradox". A time loop. By John sending Kyle back, John is responsible for his own existence. And there's never a timeline where this doesn't happen which makes it a fixed point in time. Most of my time travel knowledge is from flash media so I may have some things wrong but it seems like the terminator more or less follow the same rules.

      @@gagetaylor192 The chicken and the egg has an answer. The chicken egg came first.
      At some point throughout the evolution of the chicken there was an animal who was very similar to, but not quite a chicken who laid an egg with a chicken inside.

    • @gagetaylor192
      @gagetaylor192 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @@KrimetTStarKiller Okay, but in the sense of time travel they both came first. I'm sure in actual evolution that's how it worked but in terms of time travel I don't think the actual answer to "the chicken or the egg" applies.

    IMO, Lance Henriksen playing as the Terminator while Arnold plays Kyle would've been *terrifying* , imagine an averagely sized, visibly aged, seemingly feeble 5'8 man fling around _Arnold _*_goddamn_*_ Schwarzenegger_ like a ragdoll, would've really placed the Terminator as a machine not to be reckoned with.

    Fun fact: When pitching the film to producers, Lance Henriksen was sent to show them what the terminator would be like, so he dressed up as the Terminator, walked into the producer's office, sat down and just stared at the producer, before leaving. He was trying to give off a threatening presence. Later when James Cameron recommended Lance for the role the producer said "anyone but him". Also, Lance later realized this plan could've went way worse after learning the producer was a champion boxer.

    The scene of the Terminator in the police station is truly striking because it's the best scene depicting how unstoppable he is. Sarah and Kyle are for the most part two unarmed people just running from the Terminator. But then it seems like they are safe in a station filled with dozens of guys armed with pistols, shotguns, and even automatic rifles, in any other slasher film they'd be safe, but the Terminator literally just walks in and effortlessly mows them all down without even takaing noticeable damage.
    Combine that with the music and it's truyl a chilling scene.

    I love that in the behind the scenes when Arnold was doing his fire arms training he spoke at length to his teacher about how a machine would handle each weapon. It really shows in police station massacre when he is effortlessly duel wielding two guns that should require you to two hand and shoulder press them. Add this to his movements throughout the movie and he sells the calculated, unstoppable killing machine that he’s playing.
    Also fun fact the sound design gets messed up during that massacre as when the terminator clearly fires the pump action spaz shotgun the sound used is for his assault rifle firing off a burst shot.

      It's no doubt a gem, but I wouldn't really classify it as a horror movie full of kills like the first movie was. The T-1000 had a few on screen kills, but that was really it, while Arnold's t800 was ordered not to kill by John conner. The only notable deaths I can recall are the t-1000 killing johns foster parents and Miles Dyson getting caught in a cross fire and exploding after warning the surrounding police to get away before he dies triggering the explosion

      At least the the second one. I don't give a crap about the others but Judgment Day is my favorite. Sarah O'Connor finally becomes the iconic badass we all know her as instead of this whiney brat that "can't even balance my checkbook". Sure it's more action with the damn mini gun, and sure John limits the kills. But, still a TON of horror elements. The t2 murders John's step family including the dog (which is always horror unless it's John Wick 😂) and "scream" style impersonating the voices just like this one. The creepy orderly in the insane asylum, the vision of the future, all the cat and mouse at the end and I LOVED how the melting T2 turned into the screaming faces of everyone he had "been". It's at LEAST as horror adjacent as Aliens 2 which is also more action than the original thriller.

      T-101 is the outer skin type (so all T-101s look like Arnold, and all T-102s for example would look like somebody else), T-800 is the model number of the metal endoskeleton-as opposed to the more primitive T-600s mentioned by Kyle Reese and actually seen in Terminator Salvation and the Sarah Connor Chronicles, and the more advanced liquid metal T-1000.

      It also mentions in the novelisation that the Terminator in T1 is definitely a T-800, because in it Kyle Reese is wondering during the scene in Tech Noir whether it's a T-700 (less armoured endoskeleton) or it's a T-800 (more armoured endoskeleton), so he can gauge how difficult it will be to defeat, and then he concludes to himself after shooting it repeatedly and it getting back up that it's a T-800 because it is more resilient.

      @@Doyoueverwonderwhywerehereit mentions in the text of the (official) novelisation that it's definitely a T-800: Kyle Reese is wondering to himself in the Tech Noir scene whether it's a T-700 (less armoured endoskeleton) or a T-800 when he's fighting it in order to gauge how hard it will be to defeat (then concludes it's a T-800 once he sees it get up).
      Also Kyle Reese in the film's dialogue mentions the less advanced T-600s (who were covered in rubber skin, and which we actually see in Terminator Salvation and the Sarah Connor Chronicles): "the 600 series had rubber skin, we spotted them easy".
      So it was definitely a concept from the very beginning.

    The behind the scenes of these early Cameron projects really reinforces the idea of movie magic. The use of miniatures and camera tricks and whatnot is just astounding. I rewound one of the early shots with a power loader in Aliens over and over again because it looks TOO real. Incredible stuff.

      The special effects were just as good in Cameron's days of more limited resources as they are in the present day, when he has unlimited resources, uses them to craft elaborate worlds, and doesn't have any mental resources left over for an interesting, engaging story.

    I'm impressed with all the information about the movie. One interesting fact I found out about was that The Terminator was "inspired" by several works of the late sci-fi author Harlan Ellison, namely the Outer Limits episodes "Soldier" and "Demon With the Glass Hand" . There's a massive controversy about it but if memory serves correctly, it was settled out of court in turn for some pay and acknowledgment in future prints which is why he's mentioned at the credits in later prints of the film. Cameron went to admit that having to give in to the lawsuit instead of fight it was one of his biggest regrets but was forced to do it since he wasn't a big name at the time and Orion Pictures said that if he had fought the suit and lost, the payment that Ellison wanted was going to come out of Cameron's own pocket.

      I will say, having seen Soldier before, there are some striking similarities to some scenes. The interrogation scene in the police station especially. While it's pretty clear Cameron borrowed some stuff from those episodes, he changed more than enough and mixed up those elements into a very different thing. Like Demon With The Glass Hand is about a robot from the future fighting in the past but besides that? It seems to have little to do with the Terminator judging by the plot synopsis. I suppose if you smushed those two together and REALLY squinted you MIGHT have an argument but it's pretty damn weak.
      It reminds me of when people say Tarantino ripped off a Hong Kong movie called City on Fire. Which sounds true if you just read it on paper but if you actually watch City on Fire? The only thing similar to Reservoir Dogs is the last 10 minutes. RD takes the last 10 minutes and blows up the basic concept into a full movie. Besides the broad strokes of those last 10 minutes, the movies aren't really similar at all.
      I can see why Cameron was sad about not fighting seeing as any reasonable judge would have laughed Ellison out of the room.

So Cameron had Henriksen dress up like the character, kick open his door, and sit down at the guy’s desk. When he asked if that scared him, the financier replied absolutely and agreed to the movie. It started with apocalypse movies that aren't 100% horror and slowly it moved into slashers and campy horror. I absolutely love these movies. Terminator: Dark Fate wasn't great but it gave us more Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor, and that's 1000% okay with me

Which weirdly, i think it’s time there should be a Kill Count for Climax (2018) by Gaspar Noè. It’s truly a one of a kind movie. It’s horror but also a musical with an insanely captivating first act that absolutely goes into absolute vile.
