There is a common misconception that spices are about food, but one has to be mindfull that nutmeg was used has a psychoactive compound by royalty. One of the many wifes of Henry VIII almost died of nutmeg intoxication (Boleyn, i think) . For instance pepper was used has a facilitator of couples fertility ,the procedure was to open a box of pepper next to the bed, or doing it above a wharehouse full o pepper has it was the case for portuguese king D Manuel I. Communication along the empire was done by inventing a new political structure ,appointing a "surrogate king" ,in portuguese a Vice Rei (vive Roi in french or english). This 2° King was in all cases an actual king, polliticaly comissioned by the King for some years (Albuquerque was one of them). These bureaucratic kings would use a golden military helmet instead of a crown . Spices trade didnt start with the "silk road" (in fact the silk road mostly only traded silk, hence the name) neither the land route from China had a role. The spice trade began during the roman empire (again, not because spice was a food related item) , the got in the hands of the bizantines who got it through Egypt . Then it got into the Italian republiques that imported them from India through Egypt. Portuguese stayed in Malaca for 400 years because Malaca was the gate to the East , not China (those didn`t even had a navy). One must not forget that it took one year for Marco Polo to travel by sea from China to Japan, a journey of 2 weeks . The chinese took way more time to travel because they still sailed along the coast by sight to get anywhere, that is why there where no chinese outside China , let alone in Java By the way the first spice to be actively searched in a mass production form was Sugar, it started being produced in the island of Madeira, along side Tea (later) which is the only place to this day where those are produced in Europe
@Sephiths I was hoping nobody would catch that lol, but yeah pretty much. To Portugal at the time, it would have been western Brazil, but I should've said eastern.
This is a brilliant video! Thank you so much for telling the story of my people :D
Just a small correction, 9:07 you probably meant nau not não :)

Imagine the high rate of crime if there was a spices prohibition law? Thank you Portugal for making them available for all. We just use enough!
Grande Portugal 🇵🇹
