Bob just so you know with the dock you can remove the front plastic actually. You just need to be a bit careful pulling it off. Also the dock has a Sata 2.5 inch drive slot in the back half!! So you can store larger games on the sata drive. I ordered the Pro and I'm super excited to get it. You can get an upgrade to 256gb, but really I think an SD card will be more than enough for cheap large storage. The difference between the base and Pro is more storage (without paying for upgrade for base), and 8gb of ram instead of 4gb.
Bob, FYI - on android, the best DS emulator by a large margin is Drastic, not any of the Retroarch cores. It may be a few bucks, but trust me, it's worth it.
MelonDS is still in development. It's getting seriously better, but still for now, DraStic stands out for being the best and most well optimised android ds Emulator
It's getting very, VERY exciting. Faster chips, OLED screens, ergonomics, battery life, haptic feedback. And absolutely fantastic selection of emulators to choose from, it's all coming together nicely. With more and more companies trying to outclass each other, the proverbial snowball of innovation is now picking up in everyone's favor. Now to get supply back in check for the undoubtedly increase in demand...
Some folks are running Windows 11 and playing Steam PC games on the pro unit. It seems to be GPU bound with the CPU only at around 60%. It's a bit limited but I'm still amazed at what it can run on Windows.
You are confusing this arm based android device with a x86 based Windows device. You cannot run Windows 11 or steam games on this device, though you can probably use the steam link app I guess.
This device makes me want to grab Nintendo by the ears and shout into their greedy eyeballs, “Stop effing around with NSO, and start releasing GC, Wii, and WiiU games.” It’s a wasted library that could totally justify the $50 annual fee for the NSO+ even if they trickle the games in at 1-3 a month.
That's all of our fault for our continuous support of them. We've enabled Nintendo for ages. They do the bare minimum and we still throw money at them. Stop buying their shit like we did in the Wii U era (ironically that system did a lot of things very right) and watch them magically change their tune.
If Nintendo has demonstrated anything with their recent emulated back library on the switch the delay for more titles is to give themselves time to screw up the game experience enough so that they continue to push gamers to retro consoles.
I literally bought a switch because I thought Nintendo would be smart enough to realize the retro gaming gold they had. Nope. NSO was ok, but jot the deep library I was hoping for. The funny thing is by not giving us a way to pay for these games, specifically the ones we want and not random ass Japanese games that hold zero nostalgia for me, they only encourage the theft.
Also, Citra does a lot of caching, which means that certain animations/effects that play the first time cause a lot of slowdown, then never again. I experience something similar with Ryujinx - whenever a game plays a unique animation for the very first time, the game slows to a crawl. Whenever that animation ever plays again, even if I've closed the emulator, there's no performance dip. This was a little annoying when I played through Legends Arceus and a Noble Pokemon used an attack for the first time.
@@monkeygameplay5455 I own a 3DS. Not everyone who emulates doesn't own the system and games they play. The only time I've emulated 3DS was trying to play a romhack of Omega Ruby.
Genshin not having controller support on Android is honestly annoying as heck. And miHoYo doesn't seem to care, the game only had 120 fps support on Iphones, NOT EVEN THE PC.
Agreed, especially since it was announced at the same time as the iPhone controller support. What's worse is that button mapping software is against the terms of service so you could be banned if it's discovered you're using that to get a controller working with Android, which is ridiculous seeing as they don't seem to care about offering that support themselves. Wonder what's gonna come first, that controller support or the Switch version?
Those 2 HDMI outs on the dock tell me they put a lot of extra thought into it. Now it can be not just for game streaming but also for streaming your gameplay to TTV or YT. The LACK OF A CHEAP AND SMALL FAN blowing onto the back of the device in the dock tells me they didn't put the RIGHT thoughts into it. But that is what betas, reviews, and feedback are for. Hopefully they do a quick revision of the dock in the not-too-distant future.
Incredible video, Bob. Might have finally sold me on getting myself a seperate emulation machine that isn't my phone. I'm almost as excited to get it as I was for my switch.
I've never owned a portable emulator, aside from DS on my phone. But I've been considering one for a long time, I think this may be the one. I've definitely wanted something I can play retro as well as some newer games on, and use it for streaming.
I literally just found out these were a thing the other week after watching one of your videos, then I found out about this last week, and now it’s my first retro emulation device. Couldn’t be happier, this thing just works.
Weirdly, the Dimensity 900 actually offers similar benchmark performance to the SD845 and has smaller transistors at 6nm so theoretically should also be more power efficient.
Yeah I think the lite is just knocking out the windows compatibility It's practically the same CPU though The mediatek dimensity was released either this year or last And the 845 is like 3 years old. I think it's the exact same performance just mediatek took a little bit longer to get there so it is a more modern chip supporting more modern features like wifi 6
I think the dimensity one has better battery optimization and single core performance. The owner of ayn told me that the lite is geared towards streaming, hence the wifi 6 where as the base and pro are more for emulation since SD has more developer support and can also run windows on arm etc. The only difference between pro and base is the ram really but they should perform about the same I would think.
probably because the sd845 was throtling inside smartphones wich limited its performances. It can run at more than full speed inside the odin, so, those benchmark won't be that close between odin base/pro and odin lite. I'd expect a very noticeable drop in performance with the lite one, because of the weaker cpu/gpu and the less commonly used GPU that implies that most emulators probably doesn't have been as much optimised for yet.
"You had my curiosity but now you have my attention" Something to replace my Vita for emulation as well as my phone for gaming!? And the size of a Switch Lite too! Definitely buying this.
This is why I wait for Bob's review on certain tech. He'll rip it apart to the T if there is absolutely any deal breakers. But, I guess I should look into fitting this in the budget this year.
This is the most appealing of the non mainstream devices I've seen. If I don't get a Steam Deck I'd pick this over other options. Looks sleek and size and shape is great.
For the 3DS, that's mostly because the emulator is still in early life cycle and getting updates Also some slow down is shade caching As for DS, it may be because of the emulator or core you are using, along with maybe the bios
Official Citra on Android has pretty much been abandoned. They released it, took donations for a pro version, and then have done nothing with it. The last Android build was 9 months ago. MMJ is a little better but updates trickle in exceedingly slowly. There is a fork called Citra Enhanced which is attempting to combine the feature set of official with the performance of MMJ but it's very inconsistent in performance at the moment.
Yeah right early cycle, look how AetherSX2 perform with only a month release, it run better than Citra ,even with unpopular chipset of smartphone like mediatek, that unfortunately ,Citra unable to do, that more lean to Snapdragon phone users.
The Lite model has two advantages. 1) Newer version of Android (11 versus 10 on the Pro). 2) Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2 versus AC and 5.0 on the Pro. The second one might be noteworthy because it means faster, more stable streaming speeds for things like Game Pass.
@@rodneyrodriguezsoberal5522 Really? Do you have any relevant benchmarks you could share? Most of the ones I've seen have shown that the performance on the SD845 is slightly better due to the optimization of the chip throughout the years. The Dimensity 900 is still quite a new chip with a lot of headroom to be optimized and processor wise it seemed quite similar in performance to the SD845.
I'm more intrigued by this than the Steam Deck. This looks actually portable. The SD looks too big and heavy to be comfortable to hold for a good length of game time. (Bear in mind I have fun health stuff going on which gives me weaker hands.) This looks like a retro-friendly Switch. Colour me interested.
The fact that it is actually a handheld, as you described, and the price point makes this thing really interesting for sure. I have a Steam Deck preordered but I may get this as well. I have a gaming PC and a decent internet setup, so do I really need a Steam Deck when I could get something like this and stream my games? It’s an interesting proposition.
It’s really worth it. It does everything that was advertised and honestly is so good all around. Battery life is a tank to. I got mine 2 weeks ago and it’s been awesome
In fairness to the Steam Deck form factor is not all the marbles if it was I don't think nearly as many people would have bought the switch, that thing isn't that comfortable to use and this won't be that great either (just based on the button placement). It is also not really that portable. Can't really put it in a pocket like a phone so it still has to be bagged somehow. Steam Deck in many or most other regards is just going to be more capable. You are not spending more for nothing.
Have you seen actual reviews of the Steam Deck that have been coming out these past several days? The Steam Deck's grips are FLAWLESS and evenly distribute the weight so well that you don't notice the weight.
@@FamousWolfe ain’t the steam deck really shit tho. Like it’s so incomplete out of the box. I understand steam deck is at work tweaking all the rough edges and making games better but it really doesn’t look casual consumer friendly
The Lite does not have a significantly shittier CPU, actually on it's 2 high performance cores it should outperform the SD845. It may have a worse GPU, but the D900 has been tested to run gamecube just fine
I check several compsrisons between snapdragon and D900 and it seems quite similar, in fact in some features D900 has a better performance. Paying some extra bucks you can get a better ram and storage, that makes feel Lite like a Pro. Crossing fingers Lite version could support PS2 emulation too
After knowing which processor this thing was running, i felt a bit confused.... i just add a Razer Kishi to my note 9 and that's it? Im not sure about the 845 future support....
Incidentally, there's option in Retroarch settings just to swap buttons A and B around. When I use Switch for awhile I struggle using XBox Controls and end up pressing B when I meant to be pressing A. So I do the Retroarch reverse button option which helps. It looks like Odin has XBox setup.
Oh man, this might get me to finally pick up an emulator... I've been wanting something, but there is a lot of faffing about once you get the unit to make it work, this one is approaching the level of ready out of the box that I want.
Damn. This thing looks amazing, but I've already got a Steam Deck reserved. If it were a little cheaper I'd get one for sure. Thanks for this review Bob, it's really encouraging to see someone making great devices like this!
@@calmax7954 It's essentially a handheld PC, so yes it can. It comes with SteamOS installed by default, and I'm not sure how that's going to work with non-Valve software, but you can always install a different OS, including Windows.

Regular DS emulation ran choppy? What?! DraStic runs all games flawlessly on hardware much weaker than the SD 845. Every other DS emulator on Android is put to shame by it.
@@danielalorbi He says in the video that he used Retroarch for DS emulation. AFAIK, there's no DraStic core for RA, only a standalone version. I have no idea what kind of core this is.
Yeah, this is bit weird, i still play my DS games with Drastic, on very old tablet that has ancient A7 Mtk SoC, newer and latest Soc shouldnt have problem running Drastic.
Drastic is #1 for emulating Nds games on Android. I'm not sure why TH-camrs like this guy ignore it. I've been using it for years and it runs everything flawlessly on my S21 plus Android cell. I even converted my old LG Stylo 4 into a DS emulator using Drastic because of the stylus. Even with a snap dragon 455 chip set, it runs everything flawlessly.
I ran across your comment and I can confirm that Drastic is AMAZING!! Currently playing heart gold and soulsilver with zero issues. Runs absolutely smooth on my s21 ultra.
@@raihanlazuardi6632 Do you know if Drastic is also used on the actual DS device when brewed? If not, is there a way to transport my heartgold save file from my 21 ultra to the DS?
Man, PS2 and GameCube. It has been a LONG time coming but it is here. It has been here a while on high end phones but there aren't a lot of phones that have a fan. ARM CPUs are powerful without a fan but a fan helps a lot, like doubling the performance in some cases.
For DS emulation you want DraStic. Yes it's paid, but it's an absolute miracle how well that emulator can run on any device. Even very old and week phones can run DraStic so well, as if it was a simple Gameboy game And for citra, I think citra for Android has shader compilation issues, so it'll usually run bad the first time, but run better after that
@@SanIX___I cuz developers have to make money somehow. Making an emulator is an extremely time consuming task, and considering how good it is I think it's 100% deserves money
You can still adjust the fan setting separately from the performance setting when you first switch to performance mode from standard it puts the fan in quiet mode but you can also have it in Smart mode or sport mode . When you put it into high performance it automatically goes into the sport mode but you can go down to smart mode or toggle manual where you can crank it even higher than the sport mode
@@Galohide For many, the bigger size is not only not really a problem, it's actually a plus. The switch and the joycons is not particularly comfortable on it's own. Which is why most people tend to get some type of grip when playing undocked or they go for third party controller acessories like the Hori Split pad, which by the way makes the switch about the same size as the Steam Deck. Sure, with a grip or the third party joycons, the system is bigger, but the base switch model, and arguably even the lite, most aren't going to just put it in their pocket. They're going to put it in a case, preferably one that fits with their grip or controller. Some will even carry it with extra accessories like a pro controller. Similarly, while the Odin looks smaller, though it looks fairly ergonomic compared to the switch, I still wouldn't try to fit it in my pocket, it would get the same treatment as the switch, which is to put it in a case and maybe put that case in a bag with the rest of the stuff I want to take with me. A steam deck is in the same range, of put it in a case, carry it in a bag as the other two, it's not in some separate class of portables, and it's powerful enough as well as capable of playing pretty much any pc or emulated game, that one doesn't even need much if anything else, they could even potentially replace their switch for many games since Switch emulators are getting to the point they run switch games better than the actual switch.
@@AlbedoAtoned Another reason the size is a plus is that it allows for more space for active cooling, which keeps temps low and framerates high, just as Gaben intended
I can't believe it's been 2 years now that I've gotten this puppy. I still carry it around where ever I go, but the funny thing is with the micro HDMI cable. I use this device as a portable media center the most; when at guest houses and hotels. 😆 As long as it's still getting it's uses.
As already noted, the D900 will surprise you if you look into what it can do. Folks are also overlooking that the D900 supports Wifi6, so from a streaming perspective the Lite is actually better.
Very proud of you bringing awareness to ED. Even sneaking it in as a sponsor. Just one of life's many struggles that men have to deal with silently. There's no wonder our suicide rate is 30% higher than women.
This video and others made my decision on which portable emulator to buy. I like the look and the UI. I'm pretty happy I can dock it, but that's not a deal breaker for me. The lite model will do what I want pretty easily, and if I can get it to work with steamlink, it'll be my go to.
Taki Udon has videos running Steam games with a Windows installation on this thing. Pretty cool IMO. I have too many devices to be interested but it’s nice to see where this is going.
How do you know the Lite will perform worse? It's a 2021 midrange vs 2018 flagship situation, I don't think it's going to be a bloodwash for either side, besides, the 6nm chip in the Lite should have better battery life than the 10nm SD845
@@williss1192 it is the GameCube game. I’m using the Dolphin emulator and it works well! I’ve got it in the high performance mode and I’d say the majority of the time it’s perfect. Occasionally I hear a music stutter every now and then, but that is the exception, not the norm.
First of all, if you have ED problems, talk to your primary care doctor, not some shady website. Device looks interesting though. Joycons are hardly the gold standard for controls but that's not a deal breaker.

The base is still an incredible unit for sure. Really the only reason to get the Pro is if you plan to put windows on it, or use HD Textures with your games.
@@keiz_ that’s really good to know. I’ll keep my eyes peeled for any gameplay comparisons, but if that’s the case then I think I’ll absolutely snag one of these over a Switch Lite or Steam Deck.

For retro games 1080p isn't really doing much. PPI is more important overall, but given how low-res textures and low poly models were, it's a wash. For now on retro games, could this run current gen at full resolution anyways?
Just looking at this, my biggest problem is the form factor. Like you said in a previous video with the switch. The vertical layout needs you to readjust your thumb in an uncomfortable position to use the right stick or dpad. Makes sense with the joycons, but makes no sense here The could make it wider and have the layout be offset instead of vertical
This little thing looks so cool so I checked the indiegogo right after watching your video to get me one bit apparently shipping to the EU will be charge 21% of tax so the price of the base model goes up to 280 include shipping fee damn it 😔 Hope that in the future other sort of distribution will be available in the EU 😥
You might’ve sold me on this Bob. I kinda want a steam deck to make it my ultimate emulator with occasionally playing bigger modern titles like Batman, Star Wars or whatever. But for the price point, d-pad, size idk I’m hesitant to take the dive. Love my switch but this thing looks to scratch the itch of portable retro games and easier on the wallet. Will still consider the steam deck but this baby looks sweet

I'm seeing these for $360 with the dock, is that accurate for the Pro model? Don't want to get scammed. Couldn't find a link in the description. Looks incredible and I really want one.
They're still taking orders on Indegogo at the moment. They plan to go full retail, but it'll be a little bit till they fulfill current orders and decide where to sell it retail
Aether runs pretty much fine even with midrange processers. Most current major range and any flagship Android from the last 3 years and a dualshock (or any decent BT controller) and you're all set.
My midrange phone with unpopular mediatek chipset can run almost all games from PS2 library with good fps, especially popular title like Final Fantasy XII, AetherSX2 definitely a big gift for smartphone user right now, run smooth even better than older one like Citra emulator.
The lite is actually not worse. Dimensity 900 is a much newer SoC made on newer process. It also has better WiFi and should be more power efficient. We'd need to wait for proper benchmarks but other Dimensity 900 devices have great benchmarks but not too much gaming emulation information right now.
The Cpu is on par, if not slightly better, the the GPU will be just a tiny but behind. The biggest thing though is just driver support isn't there as much
Pretty awesome! I'm all about minimizing so I like to have one device. Although if you went with a razer kishi for your phone you would have to technically carry 2 'things'. Anyway.. a razer kishi is $50 now(renewed amazon) which can transform anyone's smartphone into something similar to the odin. In fact you could buy a renewed PIxel 3 for $120/renewed or a pixel 3xl for $140 renewed and you'd be under $200 with the same snapdragon 845(i think) as whats in the odin.. plus you'd have Android 12 just like the new Pixel 6... I rambled :(
DS emulation on android definitely is not a retroarch affair, Drastic is the emulator you want. It's a paid app, but a must, as even on the pc the retroarch DS cores perform worst than the standalones. Best of worlds would be if drastic became open source and a retroarch core was made
RP2+ is like that for me. Odin looks cool just for the fact you can play GameCube and PS2, but the screen is just too wide and playing 4:3 games means you're not gonna fill up the whole display. If you buy it for modern games and/or game streaming (as advertised), then it's a lot more justified.
@@soapbox9139 I was thinking about the RP2 + but I think the screen size and overall build is too small for what I'm looking for. I am looking for portability that'll play Dreamcast and under. 👍
The King of Emulation "SO FAR" maybe I'll get one some day but for now I feel like my S20 and S22 Ultra still do their justice heck the average price for an S20 these days is $200 CAD smack a $50 controller to it and you have an awesome emulation station!

I bought the second one after the first one got screwed, hoping the "plus"-version was designed better, but they suffer from the exact same problems.
The D900 is a good midrange SoC and for games and emulation, better cpu than the Snap 845 but unfortunaly a worse gpu. For n64/psp/Dreamcast i would expect same performance, but PS2/GC/Wii are more compatible to Snapdragon SoCs and D900 will have a worse performance
So far there's only one issue I've come across. The PS Remote Play application does not recognize the built in controller. But the Xbox XCloud application does recognize the controller. Watched Project Valhalla (Windows 10) installation and game play and was really intrigued. Older PS3/Xbox 360 gen games found on Valve Steem plays generally well on the aging Snapdragon 845.

Also the screen stays on when docked? Lol who needs that
Incredible video, Bob.

Where to buy?
Weirdly, the Dimensity 900 actually offers similar benchmark performance to the SD845 and has smaller transistors at 6nm so theoretically should also be more power efficient.
Think the lite version also has wifi 6 as well the others dont
Yeah I think the lite is just knocking out the windows compatibility
It's practically the same CPU though
The mediatek dimensity was released either this year or last
And the 845 is like 3 years old.
I think it's the exact same performance just mediatek took a little bit longer to get there so it is a more modern chip supporting more modern features like wifi 6
The biggest thing with the mediatek is just driver compatibility overall
"You had my curiosity but now you have my attention"
Something to replace my Vita for emulation as well as my phone for gaming!? And the size of a Switch Lite too! Definitely buying this.
is it worth it? does it have psp games?
The lite is great for dreamcast, psp, nintendo 64, and even gamecube and ps2... it's close to the base and pro in performance, actually

That Roman ad was great. Great job. I love when people put effort into making sponsored parts fun to watch.
For the 3DS, that's mostly because the emulator is still in early life cycle and getting updates
Also some slow down is shade caching
As for DS, it may be because of the emulator or core you are using, along with maybe the bios
Yeah, if you use the drastic emulator, everything runs flawlessly
Official Citra on Android has pretty much been abandoned. They released it, took donations for a pro version, and then have done nothing with it. The last Android build was 9 months ago.
MMJ is a little better but updates trickle in exceedingly slowly.
There is a fork called Citra Enhanced which is attempting to combine the feature set of official with the performance of MMJ but it's very inconsistent in performance at the moment.

I check several compsrisons between snapdragon and D900 and it seems quite similar, in fact in some features D900 has a better performance. Paying some extra bucks you can get a better ram and storage, that makes feel Lite like a Pro. Crossing fingers Lite version could support PS2 emulation too

DraStic runs all games flawlessly on hardware much weaker than the SD 845. Every other DS emulator on Android is put to shame by it.
Yeah, something is off here. DraStic is super performant. There's no way the Odin can't run it, especially if it runs GameCube this well.

Even very old and week phones can run DraStic so well, as if it was a simple Gameboy game
And for citra, I think citra for Android has shader compilation issues, so it'll usually run bad the first time, but run better after that
Why do i have to pay for an emulator?

so many interesting handhelds are getting released at the moment. Personally I Cant wait to get my hand on the steam deck.
Its a real shame about the size of the Steam Deck. Being both bigger and thicker than the Wii U gamepad, its not exactly an ideal portable.

My retro nostalgia ends at Dreamcast, so anything that plays DC games almost perfectly is way, way, way enough for me.
