Not at all. Putin wants buffer states around Russia and doesn’t want them being westernized, thereby invalidating those countries sovereignty. Russia was never under any threat from NATO, and certainly was never going to be invaded. It has a nuclear deterrent… Whereas every country that joined NATO did for the exact same reason: They don’t trust Russia. Putin is a paranoid geriatric that thinks Ukraine doesn’t have a right to exist - as he pointed out in his ‘21 essay.
Jeffrey Sachs is just another anti-war activist who’s apologetic towards Putin’s regime.

@@MartianTom But it has though. Declassified state department documents show the memorandum of conversation between them, which you can find for yourself easily online, however I will post an exact quote below. This is a quote from Baker in the discussion of ending the German conflict, in which the USSR wanted a demilitarized, neutral and independent Germany, and the western powers wanted Germany in NATO. Notice how the Ukraine conflict was the exact same circumstances. The western powers wanting it in NATO, and Russia wanting Ukraine to be neutral. The only difference is that it's now over 1000km east, on Russian borders.
Baker: "On the question of neutrality that was surfaced by Modro, we think that would be a mistake. I think that if you just look at history you can see that would be a mistake. A neutral Germany would undoubtedly acquire its own independent nuclear capability. However, a Germany that is firmly anchored in a changed NATO, by that i mean a NATO that is far less of a military organisation, and much more of a political one, would have no need for independent capability. There would, of course, have to be iron-clad gaurantees that NATO's jurisdiction or forces would not move eastward."

So you invade a country to prevent its membership (valid call), say that you’re making this call because of there’s Nazis there. But because you do that two other countries that had zero interest to join the evil alliance, actually joins the alliance therefore expands said alliance’s direct border onto yours totally invalidates the whole argument that you’re sending your economically challenged canon fodder to die. History is just opinions written down by people who never set foot on the front lines of those disputes. There’s still no clear answer why Russia invaded Georgia.

The US would try to get rid of the reds, but probably not by invading. Being a prosperous nation, it has so much to offer to its direct neighbours that it has not so much need for hard power projection.
A major fallacy in the premise of the comparison is that you suppose that Eastern Europe was forced into nato. Quite the other way around happened: NATO got nearly pressured hard by Eastern European countries into accepting them in - just as Ukraine is doing today. And they know darn well why they want in.

If you really want to know what caused this war then read Ukrainian political history from 1990 onwards and read Putins essay on Ukraine written in June 2021. The rise of Ukrainian nationalism is what gradually occurred in direct opposition to the level of control in Ukraine by the minority but powerful Russians in the East Ukraine. This culminated in 2014 where the Ukrainian nationalist in Parliament clash with the Russian backed President over the countries economic direction ie EU or CIS. The people took to the streets and the Russian backed President fled to Moscow to get help. This caused Putin to seize Crimea and start uprisings in the Donbas. This solidified and united the Ukrainians and after losing Crimea without firing a shot they vowed to not let this happen again and that meant pushing Russians out of powerful positions in Gov / Armed Forces / Border Control / Intelligence etc etc (ie discriminating against Russian which led to Nazi accusations) and Putin now faced losing even more control in Ukraine. This is why he invaded as he was NOT prepared to let Ukraine be an independent country which is what it was becoming.
In the June 2021 essay Putin makes clear that he sees one country and one people that has been split by history. Great Russia, Little Russia (Ukraine) and White Russia (Belorussia). This he sees as a historical tragedy and he sees himself as the person to reverse this and reunite the divided people. Its the few Nazi Ukrainian Nationalist who are forcing the Ukrainians away from their brothers and he will rescue them so they can become one again. (Read that essay its important to get Putin's perspective). However it turns out this is not how Ukrainians saw themselves. They saw their time UNDER Russia as oppression and they will fight to NOT return to that.
The USA is a minor player in all of this and is NOT influential in Ukraine and DOES NOT decide Ukrainian politics. That's is Sachs trying to make himself out to be important and his time there as critical. It wasn't.

My husband birthday happened days before the war in Ukraine started.
Family came over and at some point the war in Ukraine was the topic of conversation. We have a terrible discussion at the table ,maybe the worst ever, because I was against to blame Rusia in all what was going on because I love history and I concluded that the US and NATO where the instigator in all of was going on.
Almost my whole family was against me.
We all pass the test and the incident did not destroy our relationship.
I thanks Mr Sachs for the courage to expose the truth.
Your courage sir made me believe in humanity. Thank you

I disagre, Gorbachov stated that nobody promise that Nato will not expand. He was promise not to move Nato solders in east part of Germany(Germany was unified in 1990). Warshaw Pact was dissolved end of 1991. After that countries try to look for other military alliance. There is no sense to Agree not expand Nato Because there was nowhere to expand. Gurbachov also confirmed that no such promise was made. Nato didn't have base in Ukraine. NATO could no say NO to any country which dont apply.
The war started because Putin lost control of Ukraine. He needed pupped country like Belarus.
Putin spends billions in propaganda. Forming fake institutes, sponsoring bloggers vloggers, streamers and massive bot farms. Now when he saw how much the war cost he will be even more generous.

@@jallopenoman1126 I agree, although Australia is more democratic and open than, for example, China. Our lack of democracy is all pervasive, in the sense that even at the individual level, people have trouble respecting others' views. Often I see an inability to practise democracy at home, between friends and in the workplace. No wonder organisations become captive to political ideologies.

"We now have a very authoritative voice from Moscow confirming this understanding. Russia behind the Headlines has published an interview with Gorbachev, who was Soviet president during the discussions and treaty negotiations concerning German reunification. The interviewer asked why Gorbachev did not “insist that the promises made to you [Gorbachev]-particularly U.S. Secretary of State James Baker’s promise that NATO would not expand into the East-be legally encoded?” Gorbachev replied: “The topic of ‘NATO expansion’ was not discussed at all, and it wasn’t brought up in those years. … Another issue we brought up was discussed: making sure that NATO’s military structures would not advance and that additional armed forces would not be deployed on the territory of the then-GDR after German reunification. Baker’s statement was made in that context… Everything that could have been and needed to be done to solidify that political obligation was done. And fulfilled.”
Gorbachev continued that “The agreement on a final settlement with Germany said that no new military structures would be created in the eastern part of the country; no additional troops would be deployed; no weapons of mass destruction would be placed there. It has been obeyed all these years.” To be sure, the former Soviet president criticized NATO enlargement and called it a violation of the spirit of the assurances given Moscow in 1990, but he made clear there was no promise regarding broader enlargement."
    Source : www.brookings.edu/articles/did-nato-promise-not-to-enlarge-gorbachev-says-no/
"RBTH: One of the key issues that has arisen in connection with the events in Ukraine is NATO expansion into the East. Do you get the feeling that your Western partners lied to you when they were developing their future plans in Eastern Europe? Why didn’t you insist that the promises made to you - particularly U.S. Secretary of State James Baker’s promise that NATO would not expand into the East - be legally encoded? I will quote Baker: “NATO will not move one inch further east.”
M.G.: The topic of “NATO expansion” was not discussed at all, and it wasn’t brought up in those years. I say this with full responsibility. Not a singe Eastern European country raised the issue, not even after the Warsaw Pact ceased to exist in 1991. Western leaders didn’t bring it up, either. Another issue we brought up was discussed: making sure that NATO’s military structures would not advance and that additional armed forces from the alliance would not be deployed on the territory of the then-GDR after German reunification. Baker’s statement, mentioned in your question, was made in that context. Kohl and [German Vice Chancellor Hans-Dietrich] Genscher talked about it.
Everything that could have been and needed to be done to solidify that political obligation was done. And fulfilled. The agreement on a final settlement with Germany said that no new military structures would be created in the eastern part of the country; no additional troops would be deployed; no weapons of mass destruction would be placed there. It has been observed all these years. So don’t portray Gorbachev and the then-Soviet authorities as naïve people who were wrapped around the West’s finger. If there was naïveté, it was later, when the issue arose. Russia at first did not object.
Putin: U.S. attitude to Russia “antagonistic”
The decision for the U.S. and its allies to expand NATO into the east was decisively made in 1993. I called this a big mistake from the very beginning. It was definitely a violation of the spirit of the statements and assurances made to us in 1990. With regards to Germany, they were legally enshrined and are being observed."

But nothing was deployed to new NATO members until start of the war in 2014. Even after that it was more of symbolic nature and people had doubts NATO would really work in case Baltic countries get attacked. Russia is nervous about NATO, because it still considers these countries a part of Moscow Empire and their sovereignty is commonly questioned and laughed in Russia. Russians still think these countries do not really exist, they are being controlled by evil West, because sovereignty of small and weak countries is a fiction in their minds. NATO just means for Moscow, that plans to fix historical mistake and re-conquer these small countries is becoming very complicated.
