  • Vinnie Colaiuta is insane!!!! In this Jazz Drummer Q-Tip of the Week drum set lesson, you will watch me react to this insane video of the great Vinnie Colaiuta playing at the Baked Potato in in LA. In this reaction video you will hear Vinnie play in the odd time signature of 7/4 in a very funky yet free way. He is a drummer's drummer who is extremely musical and incredibly technical.

Have you ever seen the Joel Rosenblatt solo over the Bill Evans vamp? I would loooove a reaction vid to that. It has *everything*. Incredible dynamics and musicality. Structure and form. Subtlety. Chops. Perfect use of cow bell. Little foot / hand hi hat things that are funky as all hell. It’s just beautiful. th-cam.com/video/Q50Scn6BSrY/w-d-xo.html

Simply fantastic. It’s funny because I always hate it when people ask “who is the best drummer” or magazines are putting up lists of best drummers and all of that, because there were and are sooo many fantastic masters of that instrument. But if I were forced to pick one drummer, and I’d hate to do it, but I guess then it would be Vinnie Colaiuta. Whenever I see or hear him play, I’m deeply impressed with his technique, his versatility (is there anything he can’t play?!), his sense of groove, his feel, his absolute mastery of rhythm and time. The combination of all the things aforementioned always make me think of him as the one talent who seems a little superhuman.

I dicovered this video many years ago, to me this performance is timeless, it blows my mind everytime I watch it. The Band is called Jazz Ministry and the personnel is: Gregg Mathieson on keys, Abraham Laboriel on bass, Michael Landau on guitar, such a killer combo.

I still remember the first gig we saw him with Randy Waldman at Cafe Cordiale on Ventura. In an era before smart phones and YT any chance to see him was really special. Funny story is for this video I had to stand on a chair to the side in between him and the bar area, and shoot down over his shoulder. Literally right next to him. A couple nights, maybe a week, later we saw him with another group at the other (now closed) Baked Potato near Hollywood / Vine and he stopped playing mid set bc he recognized us and thought we were filming again (we weren’t).

What you’re not getting is that I’m doing yelling for anyone else but me. Thats what I do. The shouts and woos are just how I express my excitement for music when it gets me. I grew up in the black church where that’s what you hear through the sermon and praise and worship and the black church and culture are the foundation of this music. Shouts, woos and yells are historically a part of the music/culture. You’re welcome not to prefer that but there are a lot of people who do like my woos, so there’s no need to get mad about it when no one forced you to watch it. Just give a thumbs down (if you feel that will accomplish something) and move on to something you prefer.

You talk too much during the videos, man!

It’s a reaction video. I’m reacting to the video. Watching the original to avoid my banter.

If you're going to piggyback off someone else's performance by doing a so-called "reaction video", then I think you need to say more and be more precise. "Big seven"? What the hell is that? Why not talk about hemiolas or the difference between 7/8 and 7/4? In Vinnie's solo, instead sitting there saying, "Wow, don't do that!", why not describe what he is doing so your viewers/listeners might benefit from it, unless, of course, you can figure it yourself? If that's the case, you have no business doing this video.

I have over 100 videos of me playing and breaking down various concepts and techniques. These reaction videos are a chance to focus on the music and not the technique as much. FYI, I’ve broken down odd meters (and specifically 7/4) in other videos. Furthermore, he’s doing so much and playing so much great stuff, I’d be talking through the whole video if I broke down all the stuff he’s playing. And a lot people who watch my reactions already say I talk too much🤣. Thnx for watching anyways Paul.

@@drumqtips I understand, and I can hear from the little you do on here that you can play. My point is that I don't think it's fair to get people watching a performance which isn't yours to get views on your channel if you're not going to add to it. As you say, there is an enormous amount you could draw attention to; I think it would have been a better video if you had. Then you really would be drawing attention to the music. All the best.

I understand and respect your opinion. A lot of other folks watching would disagree with you. But it’s all good. Can’t please everyone:) I appreciate the open and respectful dialogue sir. All the best👍🏾
