  • In this Jazz Drummer Q-Tip of the Week drum set lesson, you will watch me react to the exciting drumming of Vinnie Colauita playing Actual Proof with the amazing Herbie Hancock. This is a great example of a style I like to call funk fusion. Vinnie Colauita and Herbie Hancock are able to play with funky groove and yet, play in a real free way always keeping the form.

Uhh I saw two shows in Vegas back in the day in a small club with Vinny playing with Robbin Ford! It was promoting Robbins Talk to your Daughter album. Robbin, Russ Ferantie! Roscoe Beck and Vinny! Loved every second!! Many of my,,ummmm,, contemporaries were disappointed that is wasn't a yellow jackets thang!!! It was a blues based but make no mistake it was jazz fusion but without going out there!!! What a night!

Love Vinnie. His playing on those Zappa albums, like keep it greasy on Joe's garage are legendary. That said I prefer Mike Clarks interpretation of this song. I modeled my entire sound growing up after that guy, so I'm a little biased, but his laid back linear funk stuff is the best. I would love a reaction video to some of his stuff.

The bar of 5 shows in the chart as part of a phrase that ends with a bar of 3, so it all equals 4/4. The choice of these odd bars fits the phrasing better than writing it all n 4/4 IMO.

Hey, I just want to say that I absolutely loooove Vinnie.
But I also was wondering why there isn't more love for Chad Wackerman. I mean, that guy is the Master of Time Permuation.
Cold you please do an analysis of "Looking Glass" by Holdsworth, Pasqua, Haslip and Wackerman, or Water on the Brain by Holdsworth, with Wackerman on drums? I mean, Wackerman's fills are just so open and completely abstract, without EVER losing the 1, with these crazy accents. it was often said that Holdsworth preferred to have Wackerman for his recorded tracks, which begs the question....why?
Holdsworth had his pick of the world's greatest technical virtuoso Drummers and yet, he always seemed to gravitate back to Wackerman.
    Food for thought....

And Vinnie, come on, I remember that after that concert, my friend, the great Gene Lake call me to told me that he saw Vinnie that night as he was playing on the same stage just before, damn, witness that crazy ass shit in a real time, what a luck !!! 🙂
Vinnie plays the hi-hat with his left foot for his love for Tony, and giving this kind of emergency to the music, beautiful. Well, I'd say that Vinnie's performance here is a Tony's tribute, all those flams, these combo hands/feet and shit, single stroke...

I’ve been doing strictly drum set lessons for over 10 years (over 150 videos) and thousands of drummers find very helpful and insightful. But some, especially younger drummers enjoy these type of reaction video formats. I started making them this year. I purposely don’t break down much of what he’s playing to avoid it becoming too much like another lesson. I wanted to change it up and not get too deep with the minutia of the playing to keep it lighter and fun, especially for those with short attention spans who can’t watch one of my more in depth lessons on any variety of topics. Some folks love these type of videos, some folks (like you) hate them. Some people love my actual reactions and commentary throughout, some people hate it. Oh well🤷🏾‍♂️. Can’t please everyone all the time.
