I’m not gonna say this series helped me improve, but I’ve definitely started playing slower and more methodical when playing 2’s, almost to a fault. Definitely an interesting experience. I either crush opponents from their own mistakes, or trigger my own teammates for taking my time and never committing.
So I kinda had the same thing happen where I was just too slow all the time and everyone hated me lol. But what made this game way more fun than it’s ever been was taking that slow approach when I’m last man, and still being aggressive when I’m first. Of course focusing on being less committal and using 50’s to my advantage still help all the time. But tldr: at first I feel like I got worse with this play-style, but once I figured out how to balance it with my own, I got way better and had more fun.

Im at c3 stuck for two main reasons, one cuz my controller broke and the other one cuz every opponent and team8 just play with only mechanics, I try to play like Flakes but I just get demoed or my team8 takes it away. I just kind of quitted but I don't stop watching rocket league videos :)
I'm still at a loss as to how you pro/youtubers make champ lobbies look worse than the idiot diamond/plat lobbies I'm used to (no offense to anyone, I'm there too) but thanks for the fascinating videos. You causally mentioned just taking 50s a few times, I think I, and many players, panic too much and smash it instead of working on 50s. Always something to think about in your videos. Good stuff.
On point, the single jump low 50s. We're so damn often tempted on the very last frame to flip into them begging fate to squeeze some extra advantage out of the 50 instead of just landing/wavedashing into the recover. We care too much about where the ball goes after those 50s, not feeling that with single or no jump we can catch up to the ball faster anyway, even if it feels like we lost the 50. However getting the right timing and position to not just get insta steam-rolled or even demoed is not easy
It's harder to do this than it looks, you have a good read on when opponents will challenge / what options they have when dribbling, I always find a way to mess it up
True, even tho he’s trying his best to slow it down and work through his decision making, the fact remains that he was a pro. His reads are insane, and fast. When I try to emulate his bounce dribbles in game, I find myself getting challenged before I even reacted more often than not. It’s something I need to work on, but I will say that flakes’ defensive advice on how to fake challenges and cover net REALLY helped me and my duo bud get consistent on our rotations and lock down defence. nice to see a recent comment because I’ve been watching this series for a few months now and even tho it’s a couple years old I still get so much value from it.

I have a question: with this specific playstyle what do you expect from your teammate in twos? Cause it seems like you’re playing exactly the same as in ones, and it would be educational to know when you think your teammate is doing something right, cause you’re only mentioning stuff when the teammate is messing up. Truth of the matter is that random teammates don't possess the ball well. They simply hit it away. You, in turn, see that and are confused why Flakes has the ball so much. Lesson here: leave your teammate space, and don't throw the ball away.
This is good for ranking up, but I prefer to pass in cas. These videos really helped me control the ball more and slow down when I have more time than I realized. Thanks for the great advice :0
I am struggling a lot with playing and adjusting my camera. Also sometimes I play too slow or my teammates get nervous. It's still not easy but thx for showing us!

Yea im not perfect about it but most of the reason i score is because of that careful and defensive mindset. But then when they double on me they're like "well dude you werent going so i HAD TO" lmaooo what do i do about people who get toxic even when my freaking team chat is off

I was champ 2 when I began implement your tips and slow down my game style (I used to rush into the ball a lot before) but I am kind of stuck now I do not find anymore openings and as I can see it was less easy to have "easy" goals in this episode. Yes, I can do all that, but with considerably lower success rate. Problem is, mate booming away absolutely everything and constantly enabling 2v1 is something that's really hard to deal with on its own, but mate messing up even the few and far between free plays I get per game is the final nail in the coffin.
The play style these videos are teaching is for people who have teammates who boom the ball away every play, his tips are to fix this problem and show you how to handle a 2v1. You have to fake pressure until they give away possession and then it is a 1v1 because you outplayed the first attacker.
I’m c2 div 3 and I just can’t rank up. I’ve tried playing smart, which lead to them winning by not hitting the brakes once, and if I challenge everything I just mess up and get scored on.
sometimes its the right choice to speed up a ball aka "giving ball away" just for corner boost steals. You’ll find high lvl players quickly moving the ball forward even if they could slow down to get into a boost choke later on. E.g. Apparentlyjack who’s often top 10 in 2s will say that it’s sometimes better to take quick shots on net, just cause you can continue attacking afterwards. I notice flakes never really boost starves the opponents, and he doesn’t really pass to his mate either. He also sticks on the ball in what could be considered cutting rotation. I’m not sure playing 2s as a 1s game is the most "healthy" way, constantly critizising your mates for going for the ball. Why not show a replay from your mates perspective? It’s probably very hard to know what to do as the mate. Playing the flakes way means your mate will have no clue what to do or where to be, and it will get frustrating because flakes doesn’t get off the ball, doesn’t pass, and cuts rotations even when mate has the better angle. Finally mate is so used to rotation cuts, that they passively sit in net and let the oponents shoot at the open net, and flakes gives commentary "obviously that was my mates ball". But mate probably sits in net, thinking "oh, this time my mate didn’t cut. How could I have known"

If you rank up playing solo you're gonna be hardstuck sooner or later because you lack ability to play off your mate. Boost steals I can agree can be risky, but only if you pick the wrong time to go for them. But you don't learn when is safe and when is not, if you like Flakes here never go for it. Flakes playstyle has a ceiling for its usefulness, and tbh it works mostly because it's, well, flakes. The biggest lesson for new players is probably just to not ballchase all the time, if people can just take that, and also become a safer more usefull 2nd man, then it's all good.
Last time I played rl seriously I got gc mainly playing like this (defensively at least). Since I got back into rl, I have gotten a lot better mechanically, but I have been playing worse since I’m trying to use those mechanics and making mistakes. How do I know when to try an outplay with my mechanics vs playing methodically like this? Obviously, the best players can fully utilize their mechanics while being methodical. But how do you actually do that? I can play methodically like you do here, but how do I ever get to that next level? You’re proving I don’t need to, but I still want to improve mechanically as well. Should I just take a bottom up approach where I get the basics first, only using my mechanics when I can stick to the methodical principles? Any answers would be really helpful!

Two mechanics your using that I do not see and I have not mastered is the flip around wave dash maneuver and your wall skills... at D2 some still have trouble with any wall play.
Im a mechanical player but playing like this has shown me its too much for my tm8s to understand, I constantly feel like I'm in a 3v1, I can never make a single mistake or else my tm8 crumbles, they all can't defend properly so it puts more pressure on me and occasionally I get a flakes fan on my team but they just wait for me to go in stupid positions and when I challenge to make them do something with the ball my tm8 can never defend... ever. This play style works against true idiots but once there's someone on the enemy team that understands what im doing my tm8 can never do the right shit. im not playing 2v2 for it to be a 3v1 I would like to rely on my tm8 for once instead of playing like I can't trust anyone. This playstyle did improve my 1s rank though so im not going to bitch about constantly but the more I play the more I just plant my face into my hands and hope there there will be some type of light in gc once I get lucky enough I guess
I get that it’s ranked and there’s no way you can pick your opponent but I’ve watched a lot of these videos and the skill difference between the people your playing and the people I see on a regular basis are way different. I feel like I’m just playing sweats constantly and the people you’ve played in this series play like bots most of the time
They want you to hit the ball to them. It’s what they wait for… I’m glad someone else plays like this cause all my friends think me constantly dribbling is wrong but they position so impatient when I’m trying to give them a super free ball.

Two mechanics your using that I do not see and I have not mastered is the flip around wave dash maneuver and your wall skills... at D2 some still have trouble with any wall play.
Im a mechanical player but playing like this has shown me its too much for my tm8s to understand, I constantly feel like I'm in a 3v1, I can never make a single mistake or else my tm8 crumbles, they all can't defend properly so it puts more pressure on me and occasionally I get a flakes fan on my team but they just wait for me to go in stupid positions and when I challenge to make them do something with the ball my tm8 can never defend... ever. This play style works against true idiots but once there's someone on the enemy team that understands what im doing my tm8 can never do the right shit. im not playing 2v2 for it to be a 3v1 I would like to rely on my tm8 for once instead of playing like I can't trust anyone. This playstyle did improve my 1s rank though so im not going to bitch about constantly but the more I play the more I just plant my face into my hands and hope there there will be some type of light in gc once I get lucky enough I guess

I get that it’s ranked and there’s no way you can pick your opponent but I’ve watched a lot of these videos and the skill difference between the people your playing and the people I see on a regular basis are way different. I feel like I’m just playing sweats constantly and the people you’ve played in this series play like bots most of the time
Its because you’re stuck playing their game :)
They want you to hit the ball to them. It’s what they wait for… I’m glad someone else plays like this cause all my friends think me constantly dribbling is wrong but they position so impatient when I’m trying to give them a super free ball.
