    The 2023 osu World Cup was defined by one word: chaos. Upsets came out of nowhere at every turn, teams that were expected to do well faltered while others put on an amazing miracle run, and the craziest outcomes came to fruition. Even as some things remained the same, they were very much different. The South Korea vs United States grand finals matchup was one many people expected, but the many circumstances leading up to this moment completely changed how we looked at it. The two greatest countries in osu standard history had gone through different phases and embodied different narratives, and now there was one match left to decide the fate of these two teams. The two greatest teams with the single greatest rivalry were going to battle it out once again. But no one could've expected just the sheer insanity these two teams would put on display for everyone to witness...

Imagine performing like worst hr player did, setting 2 of the best tournament scores ever in a single tournament to then only get to the same result with a best team you ever had and let's not be delusional most likely he will ever have in owc, defeated by a roster with top mc players being rektygon and barely active retired top player who against all odds turned on so once again SK could lose

    Love the video, was great to remember this amazing tournament that i had to wake up at 3am to watch before work XD.
    Just one thing I didn't like was the music overlapping during the intense tournament moments, I suppose some songs dont fit too well mid the narrative but especially songs like VANITAS were MADE for that scene, it felt quite annoying and also the overlapping music was a problem only solved by increasing the volume of the edited music and drowining out the commentators.
    Overall though, I loved it. Now I have a reference to show my friends why this match was so insane (and also teach me more about the older history of these two teams).

  • @egidapalatina
    @egidapalatina 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    Ok I don't want to break all the crazy storytelling and stuff but there's a reason the US can win so consistently (and why they will continue to be a dominant force) that may not be obvious to people who don't play in tournaments so I thought I might explain.
    Basically, the US as a country have a lot of players. And by a lot I mean, out of all players ranked 100k or less a whole 1/5th of them are from the US. This also stays true at every rank, so 1/5th of the top 1000 players are from the US. The US have an almost limitless pool of talented players to choose from and actually, you'll notice that they are one of the teams with the highest turnover replacing almost their entire roster every year to bring in fresh, sometimes even inexperienced talents (and still win anyway).
    Now comes the issue of scaling. In osu! tournaments, mappools get progressively harder as you enter later stages of the tournament. But OWC is a little special in this regard because the earlier rounds are very easy (compared to open rank tournament standards) while the late stages have a more classical scale (with occasionally GF TB being super hard). Easier pools let people who are all-round consistency demons but don't scale too well shine - basically our goat CutPaper.
    These two components come together in a way that massively favors the US. As the rounds progress, all teams (yes, even SK) start to experience 4th player syndrome where on any given map they might only have 2 or 3 players that are comfortable enough. Currently, the US are the only country with a deep enough playerbase that they can find 4 players with the necessary scaling on any skillset. This is why Canada can clobber them in Quarterfinals but would 100% lose in Grand Finals, this is also why they start to barely lose any points from Finals onwards. Even SK bringing them to TB feels like it happened only thanks to a once-in-a-lifetime performance from Forum.
    So how do you defeat the US? There are 2 options : either another country manages to get 8 world class players with infinite scaling together, or smaller countries get so good at consistency that they upset the US and make them drown in early rounds. Idk, both seem pretty fucking hard.

  • @alsn_

    Easily one of the best videos I've ever seen, I was enthralled the entire time. You presented the storyline of SK so well and really showed how crazy this entire tournament was. Great video, and now I'm even more conflicted on whether I wanted USA to continue their streak or have that insane SK roster win it all for the Faker/OWC storyline.

    We all know the US will lose eventually. Might even be this year in 2024, might be next year, might be two years. The only way they won't is if Osu spontaneously implodes enough that there can't even be another OWC. But damn was that one hell of a story.

    Proud to say I watched the entirety of OWC live. It was so amazing!!! Every match was so exciting and fun to watch. I wish SK won because they truly deserved it no less than than the USA. But nontheless it was a beautiful tournament.
