Bo took a five year break from performing after he did this special. You can kinda see why. In 2020, he was preparing to return to the stage when covid locked everything down. So he wrote, performed and produced the special "Inside" by himself in one room of his house. He talks about it in "All Eyes On Me", which would be good to do next. Then "How The World Works". But at some point you need to watch the whole "Inside" special start to finish because it's totally unique and very very Bo. It's the most Bo Burnham thing that Bo Burnham has ever Bo Burnhamed.

I like watching reactions to parts of Inside. But at the same time, I think the people doing the reactions are severely robbing themselves by not sitting down, alone, and watching it from beginning to end, to experience it in its entirety. Bo Burnham is legitimately a genius, and I do not say that lightly. There are probably only a handful of true geniuses in the public eye, and he is one of the best. A lot of the things Bo says in 'Inside' I think people don't look at too closely, but when you do, you'll discover they're not just jokes but extremely meaningful observations that you can think about for months or years.

So, one thing about Bo is he plans his shows down to every second. His crew knows literally everything that is supposed to happen in the show. The 3rd scream in this song was not planned and that told his crew that he was in the middle of a panic attack while on stage. It’s real and raw and shows just how bad everything was for him at this point in his life.

The “can’t handle this” refers to him having live panic attacks on stage during this tour. He’s even noted that in this performance he was mid panic attack. So the song is literally “I can’t handle this exact moment right now.” Then on top of that there’s layers of judgement and deconstruction of performance (a popular theme of Bo’s), self deprecation about his importance, and the struggle of being happy. It’s a great song

The “cannot give himself” line hits me, but the “I know I’m not a doctor. I’m a pussy. I put on a silly show. I should probably just shut up and do my job, so here I go” hits me harder.
We continuously tell artists, athletes, celebrities of all sorts to just “shut up and do your job” when it comes to their mental health, world views, etc etc. it’s ridiculous honestly. This was a few years before, but it reminds me of that Fox News woman who told Lebron and KD to “shut up and dribble” when they were outspoken on police brutality in 2018.
Bo takes us then right back into the bit. Into the hook about the ingredients because “you can tell them anything if you just make it funny make it rhyme”. He’s begging us to understand he isn’t joking. He’s begging us for empathy.
Then, in the midst of a live panic attack, he drops the mic and wishes his audience “goodnight I hope you’re happy”. Happy with the show, happy and had a good night out that you deserve. Happy that you drove me to constant anxiety. Happy that I can’t live with or without any of you because I decided to post a TH-cam video for my brother when I was 16, and now this is my entire life. Then he exits, and doesn’t return for 5 years.
Bo’s story is chilling, honest, and important.

There's context missing in a speech he makes before this song during the special. He lifts the lights up and talks directly to the audience. He speaks about performing, and how his generation (1990) has grown up as a generation of performers due to social media, and our desire to "perform" to everyone, all of the time. He caps it off with "I know very little about anything, but what I do know is if you can live your life without an audience you should do it."

A lot of fans had the theory that he used the overstuffed burrito as a metaphor for his struggle with fame and audience: "I wouldn't have asked for all of this if only I knew..." Bo has since denied this, that it was just intended as something humorous to focus on before he got real. But I still really like this interpretation, and I think it's a great way to illustrate what many suddenly-famous people feel.

@@deathsaidhello If it were as easy as just doing the thing, don't you think I'd be doing that? You think I want these problems? Honestly ask yourself if you would like to have selective memory, but have no control over what gets selected? How about not being able to just sit down and do something without there having to be some sort of dopamine reward in it. How about listening, but not actually being able to stay in the conversation. How about consistently not being able to tell how much time has actually passed in a given moment without looking at a clock?
What's it like being able to motivate yourself through sheer force? There are things I know I have to do, but since that activity doesn't trigger certain chemical reactions in my brain, I opt out of them.
Then pair that with society's impression of the situation. People often say it's just an excuse for laziness. It's hard enough to get people to treat it seriously. Then there are people that deflect it by saying "everybody gets like that from time to time". When for me it's an all day everyday thing.
I want to know the exact form of this disorder that I have, so I can take steps to minimize it's impact on my day to day. I can't do that if I'm barely able to afford to sustain myself. Then at work I can't just say oh it's my ADHD, because I get this lovely little voice in the back of my head saying I'm just making excuses for myself. I want to know the difference between symptoms, and me actually being just lazy.
To top it all off look at how disorganized this post is. Each paragraph contains pieces that fit better in other paragraphs.
This reply is kinda how my brain works when I'm talking about a thing. I can't consistently just get to the point. It's a whole thing for me just to explain a small little event.
I know this feels like my life story, but trust me there's more to this story than just ADHD problems, but that information is reserved for close friends.

Weird Al is definitely one of Bo's influences. Along with Tom Lehrer, who you should also check out, because he's an absolutely brilliant comedian, musician, and satirist. A good place to start is the Masochism Tango or Poisoning Pigeons in the Park. Although everything he ever did was phenomenal.

oh this one. this one, plus "are you happy", makes me so emotional to this day, especially now after he came back. i became a fan a few months after he retired from stands up and it absolutely broke my heart to get to this one song knowing that this was his actual goodbye to the stage. and now he's back! it still feels unreal, it was so final that he was never coming back at the time. so now this one hits even harder than it already did. it is, to this day, one of his most emotional songs to me. and you two really Got it which is so cool

I love your insight and banter! Definitely up there amongst my favorite Bo Burnham reactions!
As I'm sure you've noticed by now, Bo has an incredible way of layering his comedy and music with real, thought-provoking lines and messages. You've barely scratched the surface of it all, and I hope you keep going!
I think why Bo Burnham fans find reaction videos is because we can't re-experience watching Bo for the first time - laughing but also unraveling and realizing what all his shit means - so we live vicariously through you, hoping to see those "Aha!" moments we've had over the years.
You can watch random clips here and there, but if you REALLY want to understand the underlying message of his latest works, you should consider going through his specials in order. Maybe watch two or three clips from a special, watch the whole thing on your own time, record a post-viewing reaction so we can see what you got out of the entire special, and do the same for the next special(s).
Cheers guys, welcome to the fan club!

His 5 year transformation from this vulnerability to the same mature version of that vulnerability on Inside and All Eyes On Me is really striking. The growth he had from this point to Inside is what fans of his really appreciated with his new special. It was honestly emotional to see, knowing that he's had issues with his mental state all throughout making both specials, but still doing his art in a way that seems to help him. Really hope you guys enjoy the special if you get to it, it goes further into the creation process of Inside and how much he wants to actually cares to make something people connect with, but also "not care what you think about it". Like you said he's a Weird Al for the modern age but brings the realness and human nature into the art also. Watched all your Bo reactions today guys, just want to say I appreciate the thoughtful reactions and i'll be tuning in for what you thought of the new special. (sorry for the text wall lol) ❤️

The Kanye Rant (from the 2015 live show, "Make Happy." It's an excellent prequel to the Netflix special, "Inside" which Bo wrote, directed, filmed, and produced all by himself while in quarantine at the beginning of Covid. Watch Inside from front to back in order for the full effect, but if you want a logical next review, and you want to fast forward to the logical sequel, view "All Eyes On Me." You won't be disappointed.

YES, you guys nailed it, Bo is holding up a mirror, but also showing how he's a part of it. Brilliant, I love seeing you guys experience this for the first time. I think someone in the comments already said it, but as far as we know this song has to do with Bo's struggles with panic attacks while on stage. But just like with anything Bo has done, we don't REALLY know, we can only guess at some of the meanings behind his songs.

I want to recommend every song from Inside, but really I think you need to do an extended video reaction (or just split it into 2) of the entire special. It doesn’t work song by song, it works as a whole and I don’t want you to ruin it for yourselves by watching too many individual videos!!!
Also great work guys, love your insights, keep it up 🙌
