Can't Handle This literally makes me cry every time. Bo has several songs in which he talks about his mental health, depression, "Robert's not okay" ect. This breaks my heart seeing this man who brings joy and laughter to so many as he is breaking and revealing the pain behind his mask. Oof. I want to give the man a hug.

I can’t commend him enough for being so open about his struggles with his mental health. I feel it makes it easier for people to express their own struggles when they see that someone they can look up to, who they wouldn’t expect to be dealing with that stuff, talks about it.

this special (Make Happy) was his last tour before he took a 5 year break from performing, he was having severe panic attacks on stage every night (he was having one during this song, he's said he went backstage after this & broke down), you'll discover a lot more about his mental health struggles when you delve into Inside.
In regards to this song, I remember watching the special when it came out & crying laughing during the whole thing, but once it got to this song (besides the funny beginning) I SOBBED. full on ugly cry. he has a wonderful way of articulating these feelings & i felt it in my damn bones. v excited to see your reactions to his most recent stuff.

totally agree. I have always been able to see shadows of my own insecurities and anxieties in his art, especially with his crowdless performance seemingly coming right after. Adds a lot of context, especially once you watch the whole thing

All that Chipotle part it has been interpreted as him describing all the things he is struggling with and no one warning him that he was going to, and if he would've known about it he would have make the chices he make; and actually right before that part he says "Let's do this!" leaving behind the part of the jokes and diving into his problems for real.

Interestingly, even with auto-tune you can still tell Bo is a good singer because he isn't getting the "warbling" effect you get when Autotune has a hard time adjusting your voice because you're hitting in between. The fact that it's "clean" like that means he's hitting the notes he's meaning to pretty bang on. Bo has often expressed frustration with his range as a singer (i.e. not being able to hit as high or low of notes as he'd like) and I think often uses autotune as a method to extend his range, which is a very different usage than people using it to cover for poor singing.

Bo has never been on my radar before "Inside". I don't know, was never a fan of musical comedy. But "Inside" changed my opinion 180°. That special left me devastated and exhausted and I'm in love with Bo ever since. From his old YT word play stuff to his specials, even his directorial work in "Eighth grade" is such a masterpiece. He's a heavyweight, when it comes to content creation.
In "Can't handle This" he mixed the auto tune himself, first with a foot pedal, then he turned the knobs when he was down on his knees. Every bit from the Kanye intro through the Pringles, the daughter to burrito was exactly there to lure the audience to the edge, just to push us over with his breakdown. Gosh, even the little tongue ad lib was there to drop our guard completely, so the next stab could be more effective. Bo knows how to manipulate an audience as the salute during "Repeat Stuff" or the raised hands in the Pringles bit.
I'm always excited to accompany you on this journey. Loved your reaction! I'll be back for sure sis :)

So going completely from interviews with Bo and not on here say, this special was filmed from two performances on the same day. The first one he was very stressed and nervous with the pressure to get it right, he did have a panic attack as had happened before during the tour. He left stage, broke down, sobbed and was shaking for at least an hour and needed oxygen. Then he had to pull himself back together and do it all again, this time more calmly. The special cuts back and forth continually between the two shows. Apart from the obvious pull to feel sympathy towards him for what he's going through, I am so in awe of the strength it must have taken to do that.

What they don’t realize is that that’s not how it was meant to be experienced. It’s a performance, a magic trick, it’s not meant to be paused to break down what we already know is happening. They just kept laughing and thought this was funny, when in reality it is really sad. You basically see him having a panic attack and mental breakdown on stage and call out for help to an audience that for a large part didn't get that.

There are many songs that he's done before and after that are amazing, but this one has humor (including the perfect method of overdoing a joke), as well as breaks down his mental state as a performer so well. I appreciate your rewatching his break down. I think about how celebs are so quickly discarded if they hold an "unacceptable" view. Like, especially for artists, all their inspiration and everything that they produce is a part of them as much as their opinions about anything else. Both things are the artist expressing themselves. Fans and artists don't have to agree but there's this amazing pressure to out of fear of getting blacklisted. It's sad.

I've seen another channel react to Bo's specials (What., Make Happy, Inside) where he broke them up into chunks, but recorded/posted them in the same order as in the special and included the in-between bits so that each video picked up exactly where the previous left off. It worked pretty well! Each "chunk" was usually a song + some of the surrounding bits/banter.

  • @RemedialRob

Woof... You jumped waaaay ahead by going straight to the final song of "Make Happy" the Kanye Rant.... You're way out of order now. And you should know "Welcome To The Internet" and "White Woman's Instagram" are both from "Inside" the special he just released last summer after a five year break from comedy. The last song he did before that five year break was "Are You Happy" which is the end credits song he sings at the end of "Make Happy." The real end of Make Happy as a show though is the song you just watched the Kanye Rant. So you're kind of in and out if the specials right now. I don't even think you've seen all the songs from his first special.
The order is 1) Comedy Central Presents Bo Burnham. 2) Word, Words, Words 3) What 4) Make Happy 5) Inside.
If you wanted to follow his work chronologically the right way would be to check the song order on each special and watch them in order and then go back and watch the entire special from start to finish to get all the in between song context that is often missed when someone just clips the song. Sadly you sort of spoiled the big finale of "Make Happy" for yourself but if you read this hopefully you'll at least have a better understanding of where you actually are in the chronology of his work right now so you can make a better informed choice on how to move forward.

In an interview, Bo was talking about Can’t Handle This, and he was saying how he intentionally cut to the audience just being a black faceless mass, because that’s all he sees when he’s onstage performing. I think that’s part of where the fear comes in

I've had a theory for a long time that the pringle can hand thing was on purpose. The biggest consumers of chips BY FAR are high people, drunk people, and gamers. All groups that get impatient FAST when denied something they're hungry for for even a couple seconds. So that bit of extra time you spend trying to get more chips from a pringle can makes you eat them extra fast, which means you run out and buy more. Which means you always EXPECT to need to buy way more. Which means you always have a bunch available, which makes you more likely to eat them even faster, which makes you buy more. And you defend constantly buying them using their own catch phrase which they made specifically for this purpose. "Oh man, I guess they're right, once you pop you can't stop. It's not MY fault I'm eating so many of them, they're just so addictive!". Multiply all those things by the fact that, by making them from potato mush, not actual sliced potatoes, they always last JUST a bit shorter in your mouth than you WANT them to, and you have a chip that flies off the shelves at record speeds. EVERYTHING about pringles is designed around tricking people into buying more and more and more of them.

The metaphorical juxtaposition between the burrito spilling over and feeling like he's taking on too much... Accidental, apparently. Or subconscious. It has been a joy to watch you watch Bo's evolution. Following this, I recommend All Eyes On Me. It provides context for Can't Handle This.
But all of his specials (what, Make Happy, and Inside) are very worth watching.
About Can't Handle This, there's been talk about the burrito being a metaphor for fame; it gave him more than he could handle.
And pay attention to the way the shots are framed when he talks about "my biggest problem is you." It's only him on screen. Then, it goes to "guess I should just shut up and do my job," and the audience lights up while he becomes so back-lit that he's nothing more than a faceless silhouette. Almost like the performer doesn't matter; it could be any body, as long as the performance is "funny and it rhymes."
