- In this video, I go through the process of removing the paint on the forks of a bike.
You're dealing with a powerful stripper, so please wear long pants, a long sleeve shirt, gloves, face and eye protection.
Abide by your local Laws and Regulations when disposing the waste produced by this procedure.
i just got 2 bmx bikes that need repainting but after seeing this video i think i'll just do this for the whole frame

I did some sh_t like this in flip flops 🩴 spilled paint stripper on my foot & ended up in the hospital. It burned a little at first so I just wiped it off & continued but then it really started to hurt & my skin was all blistering up brah 😐

In Europe we can't get stripper like this anymore the last 10 years because of environment issues. I mis this stuf but it's better like this.
Looks great thanks for posting. How has the forks held up over the year rust-wise? I’d like to try this on a chromoly frame and fork including winter riding on salted roads. Wondering if that clear coat is enough or if I should still paint it...
Hi E L, It's been well over a year, and it's held up well. No rust. There are areas where the clear coat has been scraped off from use, other than that, it looks great.
Yeah I've got a nice wethepeople bmx frame I'd bought before lockdown but it's a nasty bright purple colour and after watching this video I'm thinking it time to remove the paint as I've got a tin of nitromores plus a couple spray cans clear lacquer and nothings looks nicer than a bmx with a raw frame and folks and all the other parts jet black!

curious when steel bike using raw without paint with primer surfacer/epoxy paint. The purpose of primer surfacer orepoxy is for corrosion resistance. Are you sure your frame can avoid corrosion proccess ?
Good question. It's been over 2 years and the fork is not rusty. That said, the fork is chromoly so that is more resilient to rust. Plus the clear enamel coat helps.
For completeness, the bike is kept indoors, and it doesn't rain much here.

How did you polish it before the clear coat. As in what was used and the method you used. Looks great.
Hey Fernando, that's a good question. I just used the sandpaper I had in the garage. Unfortunately, I don't recall exactly which grits I used. Best Guess, started with 600 --> 800 --> 1000.
I got a similar look using scotch brite if anyone doesn't have the sandpaper

Hi Adam. $400 to properly chrome plate a frame isn't unreasonable since it's labor and material intensive. That said, I wouldn't pay that much unless it's a vintage BMX frame from the 80s. (Hutch, Kuwahara, Cook Bros, CW etc) 🙂

I was pretty shocked myself! Initially I wasn't too worried about safety, but all of a sudden, paint started "popping" off... crazy.

Will that clear coat prevent it from rusting??
Hi Ismael. Good question. After 4 years, the area that was clear coated shows no signs of rust.
I used satin clear rust free spray will that also work

Will this work well with 4 piece black bars? My mom brought me a brand new bike and I don’t want to mess it up.
Hi The Flip, in the video are my results on a chromoly fork. If you're bars are also chromoly, you're results should be similar. Unfortunately, I can't say for certain what you're results will be. If you're concerned, I would test the process on a small unseen area first. Then, see if you like the results. Thanks.

do that where i live in Arizona and within a month the heat and sun will turn that clear coat yellow and start peeling. not a great idea 😂
Was this an aluminium fork? Can you do this for frame as well?
The fork was chromoly. Yes, the same process can be used for the frame.
Would this work on any frame material?
Hi Oscar. My particular frame was chromoly, but I don't see why this method wouldn't work on other materials. That said, if you are concerned, try it on a small, inconspicuous location first. Thanks!

I'm not sure if my frame is aluminium or steel. Could the paint stripper be applied to both? I also wonder why all the videos including raw frames are on BMX bikes x). I wanna try a completely raw bike for my MBT.
Hey Can, unfortunately, the only experience I have with this stripper is with chromoly. If you're concerned, I'd try it on an small inconspicuous area first. just to confirm there is no discoloration etc.
AFAIK, paint strippers work fine for any alloy parts, but definitely definitely not carbon fibre parts (the paint stripper would eat into the resin/carbon itself).
One caveat with steel is that as soon as you have the bare metal, it will start rusting (quite fast actually), so you would need to paint it or clear coat it immediately after stripping, not waiting a few days... (so plan for the weather if painting outdoors). You can probably find out if it's aluminium or steel by just looking up your model. Most modern bikes are aluminium (if not carbon).

that paint remover looks extremely powerful though, imagine combining it with sandblasting
I was surprised at how effective the paint remover was. That said, I'd be afraid of sand blasting it and flinging that chemical all over the place.
@@BIsForBudget well yeah, i wanna buy the Subrosa Flight frame because its currently the lightest chromoly frame (4.5lb) but it doesn't come in white, you know what's the worst thing about buying a brand new part especially a frame? having to sand down the perfect factory paint job :X

How does it look by now? Has the finish held?
Hey Dawson. The finish has held up very well. The bike is ridden almost daily, even in the rain. That said, areas where the clear coat has been scraped does look lighter. However, that's expected even with factory paint.

Hey! Thanks for the informative video. I just wanted to know if you could just wash the frame or the fork with tap water and soap after removing the paint, instead of using denatured alcohol. Thanks again!
Hi Jee, I'm glad the video was helpful. I've always used denatured alcohol to prep the surface before painting. It's worked well for me for years. I'm sorry, I'm reluctant to suggest an alternative I haven't personally tried.

Can we "raw" a rim?
It will depend on if the rim is painted, powder coated or anodized. If it's just painted, this method will work. I would test the stripper on a small area of your rim to test.

@@dandanbmx5865 The surface still provided enough "bite" for that particular brand of clear enamel to adhere to. It's still holding up 2 years later. Granted, the areas that where scratch/scraped are toast.

Doesn’t paint stripper make the clear enamel fall off?
Hi Wyatt. The Aircraft Remover is used to remove the original paint down to bare metal. Once this is done, the bare metal is polished, cleaned and prep'd. Then you spray the clear enamel. Spraying the enamel is the very last step.
Does anyone know if this will work on chrome finish?
Hi Edwin, unfortunately, this process will not work on chrome plated parts. I believe these is a specific solution/process for stripping chrome.
