  • The WRAL Documentary Unit investigates the growing gang problem in North Carolina. This documentary uncovers the types of gangs operating in the state, the crimes they’re committing, and how a recent change in North Carolina law is making it easier for gangs to recruit children.
The Emmy and Murrow award-winning WRAL investigative documentary team of reporter Cristin Severance and photojournalist Dwayne Myers, spoke with gang members, law enforcement officials and lawmakers about this pervasive issue. They also explored programs aimed at reaching kids before they choose the wrong path.
“We hear about gangs all the time, but much remains unknown about these criminal enterprises and their impact on our communities,” said Severance. “We were shocked to discover how the 'Raise the Age' law, intended to protect youth, is now being exploited by gangs to convince young people to commit crimes.”

Good documentary, I wish more people would focus on being proactive more than reactive… everyday I walk into work with juveniles already involved in the justice system and try to be the change i want them to believe is possible

These are disenfranchised youth who don't have stuff to do. They need good jobs , they need proactive programs, they need early intervention in schools and they need more diversion programs. The Republican legislature whittled all the money into their pet projects.
