These X79 motherboards are a creative way to reuse surplus computers sent to recycle: from old servers come obsolete socket 2011 Xeons (with lots of pci-e lanes) and cheap DDR3 ECC Registered memory (that can't be used on consumer boards). Pair that with older surplus south bridge chips to handle I/O. Add M.2 NVME using the extra pci-e lanes on the Xeons. Add a new manufacture motherboard PCB and you have a cheap computing platform.

I have had a chance to play with this exact motherboard. There are a few moments:
    - The Windows sleep mode does not work.
    - I was able to change the PCI-E version from 2.0 to 3.0 in the BIOS. The same applies to the M.2 slot.
    - One of the green SATA ports is actually SATA 2, not SATA 3.
    - The speaker sound was possible to disable with a jumper on the motherboard, but I don't remember which.
Overall I could recommend it for someone who looks for an ultra budget rig, and does not have access to reasonably priced second hand parts.
P.S. Since there are multiple revisions of this board, I can't guarantee that the same applies to all boards.

It's a redicoulous waste. We could, possibly, have *generations* of compatible chips and motherboards instead we have mountains of e-waste. It's an environmental nightmare created by artificial market segmentation and planned obsolescence. It's a chilling reminder of the dangers of having a huge unchecked force dominating a market for so long. AMD has done better with Ryzen and supporting mutiple motherboard chipsets per CPU but it could probably even be better if it were a priority to customers. Unfortunately we are talking about the "Enterprise" market which is very rarely controlled by tech savvy people. It's controlled by business people.

    • @mapesdhs597
      @mapesdhs597 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@Fellow accelerationist That isn't capitalism; to function properly it needs a free market (which we don't have), honest trade (which is flouted constantly) and property rights (which China doesn't have). Capitalism died when the Fed was setup. Modern Western economies are grossly meddled with by their states, with vast amounts of printed/made-up money, borrowed cash, unfunded liabilities, bloated welfare states, etc.; if anything it's more communist than capitalist. China meanwhile definitely isn't capitalist, though some insist on saying it has absorbed elements of it - that's wrong, what China has done is go mad for unregulated free enterprise which is very different. Check out the videos by Winston and Cmilk on serpentza, laowhy86 and ADVChina channels.
Megan A is right about the waste though, which is why I applaud these Chinese mbds, I have several. And btw, the reason why Intel never updated X79 back in the day as it should have done was because if they had, nobody would have bought X99. If X79 had native USB3, full Intel SATA3 (no crappy Marvell or ASMedia controllers) and native NVMe boot, and had been given the 8-core CPU it can definitely support (XEONs go up to at least 10 cores on S2011, and infact the 3930K is actually an 8 core but with 2 cores disabled), then again the incentive to upgrade would have been much weaker. Worse, Intel kicked off X99 with its ridiculous PCIe lane segmentation, the 5820K literally unable to do things the lowly 3820 and 4820K can do. It was years before one could finally buy an HEDT from Intel that didn't have crippled PCIe lanes, and that only happened because Ryzen came along. It's hillarious that I can put together a 4-core 4820K X79 system with four GPUs for CUDA/compute whereas that is not possible with an 8-core 7820X. :D
Thankfully, enthusiasts have rectified the lack of NVMe boot support on many older mbds, so for ASUS boards check this ROG thread for numerous modded BIOS files to support native NVMe boot (and other enhancements):
      rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?48001-R4E-BIOS-4804-MODDED-EFI-Intel-13-1-0-2126-Download
Note that one can still boot from NVMe on older mbds by using an SSD that has its own boot ROM. I have such a system with a 512GB 950 Pro.
Also note that spare PCIe slots can still be used for general NVMe storage, but one does need IB-generation CPUs to enable Gen3 PCIe.

Hi Steve. I've watched your videos for about 1yr and really like your work. Since I can read Chinese, I would like to share some interesting info based on what's shown in the video:
While no explicit brand name is written in English on the box, the badge on MB and the Chinese context on box cover indicate the brand is called 'Hong Shuo', which I feel like is a merge of ‘Acer’ and 'Asus' based on how their name is written in Chinese(even though Acer doesn't make MB). However, of course this is just a copy cat of these brand names, not really implying it is a product from either of them.

I have sold three systems with that board. the trick to make a low-cost profitable bills with these is to buy the CPU and RAM in bulk auctions. The math worked out to about $20 per 32GB kit (registered ECC), and $25 per CPU. I warranty the build for two years and keep a few extra boards and ram kits for any potential RMA issues, the rest of the parts in the builds are New. The customers knows going in, and are happy to Spend under $600 for a complete PC with 8C/16t CPU, 32GB Ram, 512GB NVME SSD + 3TB HSGT enterprises grade drive, And RX570/580 or GTX 1060 (if they want to spend the extra). Genuine True OEM Windows 10 pro license and 2 year warranty with support. A few sellers on Amazon have the board too, although the US stock sells out fast, but the seller I have been using seems to restock reasonably quickly. Most listing says it maxes at 32GB but all mine did test fine with 64GB kit.

Yeah, the hardware is very Frankenstein-style but these boards are a good performance per dollar choice. You can find them bundled with a cpu and ram on Aliexpress for a great price and Russians love that kind of thing, a lot of people here don't have a huge budget for a new PC.

Well there is no money to waste for sure, but the real reason is that Russian economy has been overall on the recovery path for two decades, with at most minor setbacks, after being an absolute shithole in the 90s. An increasing number of people can JUST ABOUT afford and want computers, they need to be careful about bang for the buck, but the used computer and component market is undersaturated unlike in more developed countries, where computer usership is stagnant or declining, and where power users churn through newest high-end hardware quite rapidly. Thus a high degree of reliance on these China Specials.

There's a bunch of those mobos with LGA2011 socket on Aliexpress for $60-80, which are basically Ivy/Sandy Bridge chipsets with 2011 sockets and NVMe slot attached, as well as modified BIOS. The funny thing is - it works. These boards and Xeon E5 CPUs are very popular combo in Russia, given that "legit" X99 boards are very expensive (unlike the Xeons) and Russians have easy access to Aliexpress stuff (and they're crazy enough to mess with it). There's a number of channels on TH-cam where you can see these in action and more detail, mostly Russian ones but some english speaking too.
If you already have DDR3 RAM and you can get Xeons cheaply, which is easy, you can get one of these boards for 2-3x less than actual X99 board, use that DDR3 RAM and have very cheap 6+ core systems comparable to modern 6-8 core Ryzen 1000-2000 series rigs without needing to pay for modern CPUs, latest chipsets and DDR4 RAM. And the NVMe actually works. Plus, if you get unlocked Xeons (E5-16xx/26xx chips), you can even overclock for even more added value.
There are also similar "frankenstein" X299 boards with LGA2011-3 sockets on them...

  • @mikhail4519
    @mikhail4519 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

You have no idea how popular it is in Russia. This mobo has a dozen of variations and there are communities here where people discuss tweaking. These can be bought for $70mobo and $80xeon 2689(8/16) and 16gb of ECC REG DDR3 quad channel for another $50. This gives us 50k in read/write and about 55ns RAM Latency - not bad. Another option is to pair it with 1650v2 - it is more expensive but goes well with these boards. Aliexpress delivery time for Russians is 14 days and since we don't have Amazon here and average salary is $500 and prices in local shops for modern hardware are overpriced - this xeon combo is a good budget option.

One of the more quirky setups you will come across. 6 Core Xeon (V2) with 5 GPUs, via 2 x Radeon Pro Duos (Fiji) and a Radeon VII. All cooled via a Custom water loop. It is an Open CL compute monster. How does a Blender BMW render at 31 seconds sound, or Luxmark Luxball hitting 150K score. I built this for the purpose of running Blender with the odd bit of gaming. It games pretty well. The only major flaw with these cheap 'X79' boards is they won't go into Sleep mode properly. However I am very happy with it having bought most components second hand. It would have cost more than twice what I put into it if I bought new, currently available hardware...ala a couple of Titan RTX cards.

That motherboard sort of reminds me of the old Megatrends HX83 board back in the later part of the original Pentium days, around the time the original MMX chips were released. It was a one off board by a company that was not related to American Megatrends the BIOS company and now is somewhat difficult to find information about it. That board had support for a 83 mhz FSB (hence its name) and some other weird stuff back before other board makers (except for Abit) we willing to let you play with a FSB above 75 mhz. It was almost legendary in how some people modded the bios and did things with the Intel BX chipset that you normally couldn't do on other boards. Almost as quickly as people caught on to what the board could do you suddenly couldn't buy it anymore and the company seeming vanished. I think they may have also released a Pentium Pro based board with some funky stuff done to it around the same time but those CPUs were so expensive that board was even less well known about.

It was very strange building with it because things are in some very unusual places when you are installing them (I did buy a fan controller to run more fans). Fired it up and worked solid as a rock.
From the PCIE power connector, I suspect these were possibly manufactured for mining PCs. With Xeon/DDR3 ECC (much cheaper than DDR4 ECC) support, they would also make great/cheap NAS server boards.

I second the notion of motherboard makers releasing limited runs of old overclocking boards. I'd love to get a new EVGA/XFX nForce 790i SLI mobo to play with my QX9650. :3

I think this one is less known because the Huanan boards are a bit more popular. Still, they are similar to the point where they may come from the same factory, so it shouldn't be too different

I’m very glad you made this video because I have one of these motherboards with a i7-3930k and a GTX 1660 super and was trying to find a bios that worked so I could overclock my cpu, thank you.

9:35 - that Plextor M8PeG SSD is Special. It has a legacy boot ROM, so you can boot it almost on all motherboards, without the NVMe boot support. You only need to use the legacy boot rom, like in samsung 950 pro.

Warning! The 6.0 version of these boards (which lacks onboard LCD indicator, power switches and buzzer) uses a B85 chipset. Do NOT flash any bios from the 1.01~1.03 revisions. It will very likely brick the board.
    The 4.0~6.0 revisions also don't support quad-channel anymore ._.)

The Q77 Chipset supports PCIE 3.0 i believe nvidia lock it out on Ivy Bridge-E and it has to be enabled via a registry key, one of my pc's runs an intel DQ77MK(Q77)
with an I7 3770k and a Sapphire Vega 64 Nitro at 3.0 just fine

To old timers, this shows how much more reliable motherboards are these days. So many brand name super 7 boards were unstable at their advertised 100fsb, using AGP etc. So many Athlon boards with bad caps - sold as mid range overclocking boards, i'd stretched a budget build to "go for reliability", only to have them die, not overclocked, while running a Duron.
