Last winter, on a friend's '07 Equinox, I had to disassemble the whole friggin dash to find a dead "blend door" actuator/motor (the reason she had no heat.) She was smelling antifreeze, so I went a little deeper to replace the heater core (it had pinholes in it.) Most shops charge $1500-$2000 for that job. -- It was a royal pain to disassemble. "Engineers" are purposely making U.S. vehicles more difficult to do "maintenance/repair."
I have an '89 Jeep Cherokee that I am keeping roadworthy for as long as possible (doing 99% of the work myself.) If I ever buy another vehicle it will be another "older" vehicle or a Toyota. Subarus are great until they break down: they are "pain"-to-work-on vehicles.

Not sure why so many are complaining about doing this. This video shows that it is easy and it was. If you don't have a lift use ramps or jacks and stands. If you don't have that you really have no business working on vehicles. I love my Equinox after 7 years and 100K miles.

    • @kyleroberts3104

Yes you can use ramps, just make sure it is level. Or you can straddle a ditch and crawl under it like I do.

Thanks and love the honesty. It is a quality that has gone right to hell in most service centers today you end up with a huge bill and it was totally unnecessary. The difficulty is finding a Garage that hoists your car up so you can do the work yourself, with a trained mechanic should you run into a problem. They have these in Toronto but not in the rest of Canada.

    Great video. 2 questions.
    1. What type and brand of trans fluid do I buy?
    2. How quarts does it take to properly fill the transmission?
    I have an 06 Equinox 2WD

great and informative video, I live overseas where there isn’t any chevy dealerships so I have to do it all myself. I have a few questions
    1) how did the vehicle run once you changed it?
    2) Other videos Ive seen attempt this say to use dexcon 4 not 5. could you provide any advice?
    thanks again for your video!

I just called my local Chevy dealership to parts and they said that Dexron 5 stopped being produced years ago and now only offer 6, 😳 now all info I’m finding says Dexron 111 to Dexron IV and Dexron T/I-4 is all compatible so as he uses Napa in video I’ll opt if near by if not I grab Valvoline Dexron VI.

I totally regret this this car. I will never buy a car that you have to go through loops just to get to the trans oil. I'm getting rid of it asap

I pity anyone who's transmission develops a leak because of the work involved in just checking the fluid level. That being said, most new vehicles do not have trans dip sticks anymore. Pop the hood on a Dodge/Chrysler vehicle.

Don't let this video discourage you. I didn't need to remove any of the mounts, I just fit my hand in there and removed it. It took me about 15 minutes to do the fluid change. Car still running strong at 243k miles.

This vehicle does have a lot of awkward placed items to work on. I e worked on vehicles since I was a kid with my father and this is one of the hardest cars to deal with but it still can be done.

My 2005 Equinox AWD says it takes TLS-IV fluid for the trans, some take Dexron, same with the transfer case and rear diff, mine takes that expensive ass Versatrak fluid, some can use syn gear oil, refer to you owners manual for the right fluid for your vehicle.

we had a customer come in with a over heating problem in there 3.4L engine the person though by trying to save on Coolant buying that cheap Green Antifreeze was ok just to save a couple of dollars,
they are surposed to use Dex-cool the Orange Antifreeze now they needs new head gaskets, cause the Green antifreeze eats the gaskets a Quick Tip.

Thing about it is, I simply want to check my fluid level. That is a lot to go through. Especially that I don't have a lift. I will never buy another Equinox. That is ridiculous.
