Hi. I am John’s mom. I can assure you that we did EVERYTHING in our power to help him. John was an amazing soul who put everyone before himself. He was being watched and it took a split second for his grandmother to go get a glass of water and he pulled the trigger. We had no idea he had a hidden gun. All guns were locked up and accounted for just like they asked us to ensure. He went to my moms because they were close and we thought it would be a good decompression time for him as he had two younger siblings at home. I shared his story to raise awareness and hopefully get mental health care reformed so no one else has to endure this pain. Please instead of being negative share his story so that it makes a difference for future patients.
On either ends of seeking help, the so-called "professionals" DO NOT listen. I was admitted after seeking help for being an abuse victim. I did everything to explain to the doctors, nurses, therapists, psychiatrist and still no one listened. I'm now left to deal with additional emotional & mental trauma from my experience in a psychiatric facility while still trying to get help to deal with my abuser. Something has to change

Shut that damn hospital down!!!! I was a patient there years ago when I was 15/16 they over kept me for 22 days and acted like I was going to be discharged and took the papers away and said it was for somebody else!!!!
I would really love to know what kind of insurance they had. 30 years ago my parents couldn't get me out of Pine Rest they had amazing Insurance. My Heart Breaks for this Moma and Family and Friends. I understand what her son was going through. I really wished we had a better Mental Health system that cared for their patients and not the Money.
I’ve been in there. I wonder if their insurance was unwilling to continue paying since it had been about two weeks. Typical stay is about 5-7 days. Wouldn’t be surprised if they pushed him out because of it.
so sad reading this I hope things get changed . A lot of people do not understand how truly bad mental illness can be. It can overtake everything. And medication is not always the answer. I can say from personally it took many thing before the right things was found to help me but I am glad it was found. Because otherwise this could have been my story.
So sorry for the loss of your wonderful son. Mental health should be absolutely ashamed of themselves. They just dont care. Shame on you. An innocent boy has died due to mental health incompetence.
This happened to my friend in a Detroit psych ward too. It ruined her life to go there- she said it exasperated her issues. They let her go, even though she was far from being ready. They sent her home to die because the insurance ran out.
They are complete bastards for doing that. They probably have a list of excuses so they can keep getting away with letting suicidal people out without any concerns for their safety.
I was in a long term state hospital for 9 months. The hospital traumatized mean. 3 weeks after being released I stole medication that wasn't mine and tried to overdose. My mom found me not feeling good because my blood pressure was dropping quickly. I ended up back in the hospital and I ended up going to a long term residential treatment facility. The residential saved my life. The people there were kind and listened to me as best as they could. I also did not make it easy for them as I was afraid of trusting new people. I was there for 2 years and 7 months. I graduated high school thanks to them. I'm now enrolled in a program to become a veterinary assistant.
Part of the reason this happens is because people working in these fields are not competent. They just need a paycheck so they go to work everyday, do what they have to im order to get through the day, collect their paycheck and it continues on from there. They probably couldn't even tell you 10 patients names. But when visitors come they act likr thry have it all together and hope no one finds out. And that happens in a lot of places unfortunately.
It’s not just mental health that fails but also law enforcement the justice system and veterinary care services same thing with foster care for help it’s all the same cycle keep your loved ones close by listen to them and help them as much the world is corrupt
That hospital should be sanctioned or something and whoever signed off on his release, whoever told his mother she'd be charged with child abandonment if she didn't pick him up that day, should be terminated and the doctor perhaps should be charged with negligent homicide or wanton endangerment. That's just my opinion.
Everyone failed him. My mental hospital will not let you leave even if you say you're doing good. This mental hospital let him go despite him saying he was doing bad.
how did this kid get his hands on a gun the moment he got out of a psych ward when he's telling people this stuff? nobody thought to tell granny to put the strap up before the kid that wants to die comes home clearly all the guns where not locked up and accounted for if he was able to find and hide one and not to mention how do you not notice your own gun is missing idk i think the shit could have been avoided but it might just be me rip

The system totally failed him. But these hospitals are completely overwhelmed by millions of suicidal Americans everyday, all of whom have threatened self-harm. It's impossible to give each patient the real care they need, generally they are out of the hospital in 5 days because thats what the insurance will cover. I used to drive an ambulance in las vegas and 20% of all calls are people threatening self harm. Doesnt help that half the patients are homeless and just trying to get a room and food.
Grady Heath System in Atlanta, GA had failed me so many giving times when I trying so hard to get someone to understand my sad situations when I requested help they too busy with other gimmicks nonsense I feel sad for this young man my prayers and condolences go out for the families
Why would you still give him access to firearms. I'm not saying it's someone else's fault. But if he lready held a gun to his head, and said I wish I pulled the trigger. Wouldn't you remove the guns from the home?
Why did the boy want to end his life? What did he say about that? I ask because we don't know if this was a mental health issue only or a life issue or both. I am very sorry to John's entire family for your tragic loss of such a nice young man. Sometimes there may not be an answer and that's really hard to deal with.
