As long as I can remember, Toto was called "faceless studio musicians" by the critics of Rolling Stone... I also remember an interview that the band did back in the 80's where drummer Jeff Porcaro (RIP) basically stated that critics didn't know anything and every bad review that critics gave them in the press he used it to line a bird cage with it...so yeah I would love them to get into the RRHOF, but I don't plan to hold my breath waiting for it to happen.

I was in the music business in LA for over 20 years. I can tell you without a doubt all the members of Toto are highly regarded and respected. Most of you would be shocked how many songs they have written and produced for other bands. Plus as studio musicians the Porcaro Brothers are legendary. They were never fond of touring. It's very common for successful bands to splinter into parts and money is always an issue.

I guess I’m one of the few that isn’t surprised by their lengthy credit list cuz I grew up always studying the liner notes of cassettes and cd’s. I kept noticing Lukather, Paich, Jeff and Steve Porcaro’s names showing up on other popular artists albums and thinking “Man, these guys must really be good & also in high demand”. Turns out that they were. Big time!

@@JasonNation72 Maybe that's because Toto is not taken seriously and normally gets categorized as "Yacht Rock" (and let's face it, their lyrics are really utter garbage). But Lukather is ranked as the number one session player of all time. If you look at Toto as just one project under hundreds, he's neither under-, nor overrated. He's "rated" exactly right. And I bet he's happy not to be Clapton these days! At least he seems like a humble, nice dude, and not a raging bigot like "God".

Not only is Joseph Williams the son of John Williams (as mentioned by many others), David Paich is the son of conductor/arranger/composer/producer/pianist Marty Paich, and the Porcaro brothers are the sons of the great percussionist Joe Porcaro. The musical talent of this band is kind of in the blood.

I absolutely LOVE Toto. My teen years were in the 90s listening to hip-hop and R&B mostly, but have loved all music genres. And even though I was only like 5, I remember hearing Africa for the first time in the 80s. That song entrances me. I'm black and ai didn't give a damn it was a white band. I just always thought they were Afrikaaner or something. I'm learning they're American with this story but I don't care. I just love the music. And when Weezer remade it, I was delighted.
It's the pace of the song that still draws me in. I can't do anything else when that song is on.
I know a lot of their catalog and the music makes me feel like I'm in another place. And a lot of their songs have been sampled for hip-hop, too.
And I'm not surprised they've worked with the artists listed in this story because they are all too my favorite artists.

In the late summer of 1971, my wife and I noticed a very young-looking drummer on the set of "The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour" on TV. We became fans of the show and bought tickets for the duo's concert appearance on March 19, 1972 at Fort Wayne, Indiana's Memorial Coliseum. That Sunday afternoon in a packed arena we learned that the young drummer from the TV show was 17 year-old Jeff Porcaro. Fast-forward two years and we're attending our first Steely Dan concert at the U. of Toledo on Sunday April 21, 1974, when who do we see tandem drumming alongside Jim Hodder but a just-turned 20 Jeff Porcaro. He was so good on that tour that he became the session drummer on their 1975 album "Katy Lied," and later that year on Boz Scagg's Grammy-winning album "Silk Degrees" -- and all of this before the age of 22. By the way, that's the Porcaro brothers' dad, Joe, playing the marimba on their 1982 #1 hit "Africa."

@andyinoregon you lucky dog, to have seen these performances. I wasn't born until the end of 1972, but love Steely Dan so much. I finally got to see them a couple of years ago, but without Walter Becker, as he had just passed the year before. Thanks for opening and sharing your time capsule of a story. 😀

@@CatgirLinKC Lucky indeed, because after July 1974 Steely Dan wouldn't tour again until August 1993. By that time, both drummers we saw on that Sunday in Toledo had passed on.

Fun fact: Toto's "Africa" has come home, so to speak, thanks to an installation by an artist who plans to play the song on loop in a Namibian desert -- for eternity. German-Namibian artist Max Siedentopf has set up the sound installation, called "Toto Forever," in an undisclosed location in the 1,200 mile-long Namib Desert.

I'm so grateful David Paich, Steve Lukather David Hungate,, Joe Williams, Bobby Kimball, Jeff Porcaro, Steve Porcaro and Mike Porcaro formed a Rock band as they were all LA SESSION PLAYERS.
Throughout the tragedies in this band's history with the untimely death of G.O.A.T drummer Jeff Porcaro in 1992 to the ALS diagnosis of brother Mike Porcaro in 2007 and his untimely death in 2015....I'm so grateful David, Luke and Joe have kept " TOTO" on the yellow brick road!
