Inspired by actress Rosanna Arquette who along the way her magnetism and piercing blue eyes have captivated several rock luminaries such as Peter Gabriel who wrote In Your Eyes about her. In the early 80s, Arquette was in a romantic relationship with rocker Steve Porcaro, the coveted keyboardist for Toto, and one of the most sought after session musicians. Toto bandmate & fellow virtuoso, David Paich, who was always searching for real life inspiration to write lyrics and song titles, was working on a tune about a girl he dug in high school.Since the relationship between Porcaro & Arquette was hot & heavy at the time, he decided to title his un-named song "Rosanna." Toto has always been a favorite of mine. The first Toto song I heard was Rosanna at 6 years old. I begged my parents for the song, and one day my dad came home with the 45. I must've listened to it a hundred times in the first week.
I've had the unique privilege of interviewing Steve Lukather and David Paich 3 times and I have to tell you, it's always amazing when the picture you've painted of a band in your head over years of listening not only matches their live performance but also lives up to who they are as people. Luke and Paich are two of the nicest guys in the industry. Not only two of the greatest songwriters and players in history, they're also wonderful story tellers. Here's what they said about the early days of the band:
Rosanna Arquette has caught the attention of millions throughout her extensive acting career, With prominent roles in such movies as After Hours, Desperately Seeking Susan, Nobody's Fool, and New York Stories.
Since the relationship between Porcaro & Arquette was hot & heavy at the time, he decided to title his un-named song "Rosanna.":
Like all of Toto's instrumental arrangements, "Rosanna" was created with superlative musicianship.
The late Jeff Porcaro, Toto's highly-acclaimed drummer, kicks off the track with a crafty 'half-time shuffle' drum beat affectionately called the "Rosanna Shuffle."
Jeff's brother, Steve Porcaro, delivers a swirling synthesizer interchange in the bridge, followed by a tasty Steve Lukather guitar soloLuke unleashes another face-melting solo as the track's at the end of the extended album version.
In addition to the expert musicianship of the respective members of Toto, the recording of "Rosanna:" featured the additional all-star talent of the revered session player Jerry Hey on trumpet

Tom Scott on Sax And Tom Kelly on backing vocals
Lukather sings the first verse and the third verse of "Rosanna," and then turns lead vocal duties over to Bobby Kimball. So let's pause for a second and talk about Bobby Kimball for a second. The power of his voice on this song is on par with Peak MIKE TYSON. He goes jab jab jab and then an Iron Mike like uppercut that put the fight out of reach. when he sings Rosanna twice.belting with a faithful rock ferocity.
At this moment in time Toto was truly in their element. In my opinion they were like the 1927 Yankees or the 93 Chicago Bulls. Unbeatable. THeir Musicianship, their sense of melody, their songcraft. Almost unprecedented and don't forget they had just spent the 5 years prior and some years after playing on thousands of the biggest records of the ear that collectively sold over half a billion copies that collectively amassed 225 grammy nominations.
Which if you think about it by today's standard is even more astounding, where nobody buys music anymore. They are just the greatest. Truly, I've said it before, They are too good for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Anyway.

Now as far as rock music and song craftsmanship, I have to agree that you just don't hear the music today like you heard back then. There's still some incredible bands and songs but they don't get the attention like they did.

Jeff Porcaro just came up with one of the most legendary grooves on the spot. What an absolute talent.
FFThat groove is courtesy of Bernard Purdie and known as the Purdie shuffle. Porcaro is awesome but that's who he was into ( admittedly into) as well as Bonham's performance on Fool in the Rain which give him for the inspiration for the drum track on Rossana. Not taking anything away from him but it simply was not his invention
TOTO is not only the best band in my opinion, and has made 40+ years of amazing music, but they are also criminally under-rated. Luke is probably one of, if not the best living guitarists.
One of the best musicians. They're underrated by the audience. But are well respected by music industry. Truly one of the best.

@James Smith Home of the Brave is a great rock tune by them. everything they do is great!
What is also amazing about Luke is that he has done lead vocals on some of Toto’s biggest hits along with writing amazing hit songs (The Tubes, George Benson as well as Toto). He played bass on “Beat It” as well as the Tubes “Talk to You Later”. He is such an amazing musician and writer/singer.

Toto has the most complex and beautiful melodies that really make my mind satisfied when I listen.

For anyone that is interested, Rick Beato did a "What makes this song great" episode on this song where he breaks it down and isolates the tracks for analysis. I rediscovered how amazing this song and these musicians really are.
Yeah. There's so many nuances per instrument. The vocal harmonies are atreat to listen to, even the spaces they put on the piece have purpose! And don't forget the tasty solos and super cool jam session at the end till fade! I love that episode of Rick Beato. 😁
It's a brilliant song and Beato shows the intricacies that are woven together. Both provide justification that the song is top shelf

I like Rick’s videos where he isolates the tracks. This one was one of the first Beato videos I saw and I subbed his channel immediately.
On the subject of isolated tracks, if you aspire to feel like you’re in the band, there are videos out there of Rosanna with isolated tracks and others where all the tracks are there except the one you want to play so you can pick your instrument and play along with the original recording. I’ve done that with the bass several times and it’s a lot of fun
I'm glad that Toto is finally getting the respect that they deserve.
The respect has alway's been there amongst musician's and fan's of them, most other people wouldn't know. They're listening to Brittany Spears, Justin Bieber, or old school (never really had talent to begin with) Jennifer Lopez etc.... or an array of people who should be nobodies.
Kept telling my friends in High School and they would not listen..
They have always been one of my favorite bands, always wish they got more recognition.

I'm of an age where I was fascinated with the entire first Toto album. Rosanna was awesome, Africa was stellar but overall, that first record was legendary.
I was lucky to meet David Paich at a gig in LA a few years ago. I was a huge fanboy and told him the solo from Rosanna was the first piano solo I ever learnt when I was young and it inspired me to become a musician. He laughed and said they had a tour coming up and that I should come around and teach it to him as he's probably forgotten it!! ha ha
I am 57, I started to listen to rock and pop music around 1970. Yeah I was young, only 7 back then. I listened to the radio both AM and FM for most of the 70's. I then was 18 and dove in headfirst in all the 80's and 90 stuff. I was gifted the time and place of hearing all this great music as it was being made and released. I may be getting old. But my time of growing up was the height of the music business, and I loved every minute of it. I still do.
Toto is the most incredible band that no one is obsessed with. It’s just like, a bunch of dads that absolutely kick ass?

So, So glad I was alive, and a teen during this time. You're right Professor, there will NEVER be another time in music like there was in the 1980's. Heck, they can't even make any music these days, which is proof of our statements. It will never happen again. The 80's were pure magic, and from every genre!!! Fact!!

Lukather's outro solo on Rosanna is one of the greatest moments on 6 strings. As stellar as the song is, it a delivery system for the licks at 4 min 59 sec.
Lukather is ungodly on this song. And I agree, the outro is legendary.

Hold The Line was the song I chose as my first when I took guitar lessons. It’s an amazing song I liked from day one of hearing it on am radio (God I feel old 😂)
"Rosanna" is simply my favorite song of all time. So rich and layered throughout, with every facet of it perfect.
Toto IV was my first CD i ever bought...and I didn't even have a CD player! I knew I would get one someday so I just bought it and used my friends to make a tape to hold me over until I could get a new system. Great album...incredible group!

Toto was my first live concert I ever went to. That was 1982 at The Heart of Illinois Fair. I will never forget hearing Rosanna live. Still brings back great memories and has definitely stood the test of time!

I saw Toto live in Puerto Rico, in 83 or 84. Amazing. Best band ever. But my fave ballad of them is 99, from the best record ever made: HYDRA.

Rosanna Arquette is perhaps second only to Patti Boyd Harrison as the greatest ever muse in rock history. She’s inspired sooooo many classic songs. Gotta be cool for her when she hears all those tunes about her.
Jeff Porcoro gets my vote as the best session drummer of the rock era. Nothing the guy couldn’t do. So creative.
Btw when Lukather mentioned they were playing songs from Steely Dan’s Katy Lied - at high school dances - even before the album came out...holy $h_t 😂 That’s a school dance you don’t wanna miss.

I'd say Jeff was great on the swing tunes but the straight ones and the more progressive Toto stuff wasn't exactly his cup of tea (and don't get me wrong, I view Jeff as one of the greatest ever!). Especially when you listen to the original recording of the song Hydra and compare the drumming with the live version Simon Philips did. This song is Simon's home turf and honestly he did a better job on it than Jeff did. But for shuffles, Jeff is untouchable.

The thing that struck me and continues to strike me with Toto is their incredible musicianship. This song is so elaborate and so perfectly executed, and through their later albums, even though they never had the same commercial success, their music never fails to impress. Thanks for a great video.

My first Toto album was Hydra. I was 18 in the Army at Fort Carson, CO (my first duty station). Love their music!
A reporter once asked Eddie Van Halen what it was like to be the best guitar player in the world. Eddie said "I don't know, you'd have to ask Steve Lukather."

I play one of those 2, sometimes both of them EVERY DAY. I wish I could hug Steve Lukather & thank him for writing/co-writing them. Then he hits you with the guitar solos on them. They don't make enough awards for this guy's talent.
We need a return to something called music because today's version, 2021 just isn't cutting it.
My entire life - I never turned the radio station on any Toto song. There’s nothing like the opening drums of Rosanna to get your ears ready to have a musical feast. As much as I always loved their music, I didn’t get around to seeing a live Toto show on their 35th Anniversary Tour when they came to a theater in Upper Darby, just outside of Philadelphia. I bought the ticket on a whim and went to the show by myself. I...COULDN’T...BELIEVE...WHAT...MY...EARS...HEARD during that show. I’ve seen literally hundreds of shows in my life. Without a doubt - it was the best show I’d ever seen and Toto was the best live band that I have ever heard. I went on to see them 3 more times before they played their final show last year in my hometown of Philadelphia. I was in the 8th row. Amazing band (in all of their incarnations) and I regret not going out of my way to see them more. So glad I got to see them the 4 times that I did. #VivaLaToto

@@marieperry5052 you should put that on your to-do list you know before you kick the bucket I know they said this last tour was their last but I know some of the behind-the-scenes kind of thing that's going on right now and I don't blame them for not wanting to continue at this point I just hope they pick back up at some point because they are just a force not to be reckoned with and seeing them in concert it's like the best thing ever such a great group of guys I've gotten to meet them four or five times now

Last time I was this early I was in 5th grade having my first schoolboy crush and Rosanna playing on the FM boombox.
I love to crank this tune. I also love "I'll supply the love" (a forgotten hit from the late 70s) and "Without your love". Toto is an amazing group.

One of the best bands IMO. Always loved Toto. Then as I read more about the band I discovered that they played on most of the other songs I grew up on and loved. I lost count of how many records and tapes and CDs that I have worn out only to buy again. I guess that's one good reason to be grateful for digital. Thank you Professor of Rock!!!!

Toto will always be legendary. I've listened to them on almost a daily basis for decades. Rosanna and Africa are simply awesome
Toto is my all time favorite band, for all the reasons you mention. But I was hooked from the get go. The song was “Girl, Goodbye” and that great groove laid down by one of the absolute greatest time keepers ever, Mr. Jeff Porcaro. I am a guitar player and have my own Ernie Ball Luke III BFR, because I wanted to sound like Luke. But in reality, the rhythm section of Hungate & Pocaro was what hooked me in ‘77, as a sophomore in the Music School at NTSU...check out the alumni from that school! David Hungate is one! I’ve had the pleasure of meeting David Paisch, Luke, David Hungate, Lenny Castro, Simon Phillips (another amazing drummer!) & Steve Porcaro and to a man, some of the coolest cats in the LA music scene for the past 40+ years! I looks like there won’t be an iteration of Toto going forward, which makes me a bit sad. That said, no collection of musicians can come close to their collective achievements as 1st call studio musicians in pop music. It’s been a joy to see them play live & enjoy their catalog of outstanding songs.

Toto WAS the Wrecking Crew of the 1970s and 1980s. Except they also recorded some epic albums. Hungate, Paich, and Jeff Porcaro co-wrote and were masterful on IMO one of the Top 10 singles of the rock/R&B era: Lowdown, fronted by Boz Scaggs. Hydra IMO is Toto's best album, a fusion of rock, jazz, R&B, and prog rock that stands the test of time.
I only saw Toto in concert once and they opened with this song!! And I'll never forget being blown away by the sound of Luke's guitar when he hit the first power chord in the first verse... Goosebumps!!

Professor...Patrick Swayze is also in the video, I just recently found out and had to watch it slowly because blink and you'll miss him. My 15 y.o. son is a big time Toto fan, and disappointed a couple times they played near but in 18 or 21 and over venues/casinos. I will never forget the night I picked him up from 4H band and the first thing he says...MOM! We played AFRICA! LOL. Thanks for the videos. I think we all appreciate them more as we learn about their musicianship and talent. It runs deep.

Everyone has those songs that take them back to “the day” and most of Professor Rocks videos do that, almost all of them. Toto IV was awesome. I was fortunate enough to grow up, as 10 yr old in 1980, during what I think was the greatest musical, if not just the greatest, decade ever. The styles and crossovers the musicianship and showmanship the merging of culture was amazing. I miss seeing live bands around town and cover bands rather than DJs. Change is constant, some good, some bad, but I wouldn’t mind getting the essence of the 80’s back. For me that essence was seeing the world change, the end of the cold war and a future of great possibility.

@Joel Michael I'm essentially the same age as you and I would agree that the 80's was the best for music, maybe movies too. Greatest decade ever though? I don't think so. The fashions, the hair and that's not even touching on the bigger world issues of the Cold War and AIDS, among other things. Although to be fair, some of those bigger issues did start changing for the better. At least for a while.
...that essence was seeing the world change, the end of the cold war and a future of great possibility...with an amazing soundtrack!
TOTO IV featured people from bands like “Eagles”, “Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers”, “Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band”, “Fleetwood Mac”, “Chicago”, “Led Zeppelin”, and members of “America”, to name a few. This album was the mixing of so many iconic number 1 bands that, oh by the way, helped TOTO reach the chart tops.
Steve Lukather is so fun to listen telling stories. He has worked with so many great musicians and singers.
Toto is transcendent and iconic. It was embedded in my heart as a teenager even when I didn’t speak English. Now in mid-life it still gives me chills to hear their music. My fav: Africa ♥️
'Rosanna' is the first song I ever heard from TOTO.I bought 'TOTO IV' shortly after and have worn out several cassette and vinyl versions of it. Have since bought everything TOTO has ever done and seen them live 11 times. Jeff Porcaro is the reason I wanted to be a drummer and Bobby Kimball is the reason I wanted to be a singer. One of the greatest songs ever.

back in 1986, I was 14 years old, had a dishwashing job at the local golf course where I lived at the time. one weekend I had saved enough money and got the itch to go shopping, and came across this fairly cheap CD Player at the Flea Market, not a top name brand by any means, but I decided to buy it and a CD to go along with it, my very 1st CD was TOTO IV. I had heard Africa on the radio quite a few times, but never heard Rosanna till that day I bought the CD and CD Player... its my favorite TOTO Song!

My personal favorite of the band, and indeed the perfect example of them all in their element. Luk's second solo along with the piano jamming on the ride out are truly icing on a fantastic gourmet "cake". Perfect song, perfectly arranged and performed, along with all the x-factors mentioned, (Jeff's inventive groove, Luk's superb soloing, Kimball's soaring vocals. I can't say enough about this tune and how much it rocks!
I loved this band so much I snuck backstage once and met them, all I had was a drumstick with me so I had them all sign it.
"Africa" is one of my all-time top ten, but Toto is actually responsible for naming my daughter, the child of my heart. In 1985, I was expecting my second child and hoping for a girl as I already had a son. My husband and I had debated names and we knew for a girl we wanted the middle name Christine, after his late mother. I was driving one day, with the radio on of course, and I heard a song with what I thought was a GREAT name for a girl and that went well with Christine. I announced to my husband when I got home that I thought LEANNA was the right name. Imagine my surprise when I later learned Toto was singing Holyanna and not Oh, Leanna. Didn't matter. She's been Leanna from the moment we first laid eyes on her.
I have Loved ToTo music since 1982 when believe it or not Rosanna hit the radio! ToTo's 25th Anniversary concert is what i consider perfection of a live concert!
You crack me up. You were SIX yrs old and remember so vividly. I don't recall much back then.
I can remember pretty vividly from about 3 years and up. Even remember one memory from about 2.5. It’s a blessing and a curse.
My mum was over to America in the summer of 82 from Ireland and Rosanna was the top hit along with Do You Want Me, Heat Of The Moment and Eye of the tiger were just songs she will remember and mesmerised because of how good they were and the memories they left her.

I always knew Rosanna was a good song until I was grocery shopping one day and it came on over the speakers,. It just hit me right that day and realized it’s a great song! I love the way the songs fades out in a jazzy sort of way as if there is more to this song that we don’t get to hear.

The summer of 82 I was on a chartered bus with a large group from my school heading to Knoxville Tennessee to the World's Fair. Rosanna was played heavily that summer trip from every radio station and every boom box. I still think of it as a "summer song" and it often brings back memories of that long ago trip.
Good times. Lots of incredible music being created by outstanding musicians. Writers and producers. Home studios popping up everywhere. Tascam multitrack recorders were getting more popular by the day. The Things were popping. People were making real quality Albums/CD at home
First introduction to Toto was Hold the Line, then Rosanna then next song was superb... 'I'll be over you' such a great song written by Steve L and Randy Goodrum also sung by Steve L and Joseph Williams (son of composer John Williams). Adjustment to Cynthia Rhodes, she married to Richard Marx for about 28 years 1989 to 2017. They had met a in the early '80s and started dating in 1987-88.

Rosanna was the first rock song I heard when I got a transistor radio for my birthday. Introduced me to a whole new world of music beyond the stuff my parents listened to.
I am such a fan of there last album that I have listened to it more than any album ever and I’m 69 years old.
The drum riff is EVERYTHING on this song. It was amazing what Jeff was able to do with the drums!
Toto. One of the greatest bands ever. One of the first videos I ever saw was Africa on HBO’s Video Jukebox when I was in 7th grade. I remember thinking what is this? Awesome music put to this video story?? Huh??? Just amazing looking back on it now. Toto is one of my favorite bands. So many great songs...such great musicians and vocalists. Paich, Lukather, the Porcaro brothers, Williams, Kimball and others....just amazing. I love listening to them to this day and my admiration for them has only grown as I have aged. Thanks for all the music and hits guys. Your work is the soundtrack of much of my life! Thank you Professor for featuring them and your content! Great work!
I forgot about Video Jukebox! When we did afford HBO or at a friends house who had it. My kids are so lucky now they can just TH-cam. I even forget I can do that...then I start and end up in a video hole 4 hours later. ;-)

The Toto interviews are dynamite! Not only is Rosanna one of my favorite Toto songs, it’s my daughter’s as well. Their talent really shines and I have sought out many albums that they’ve played on to just enjoy music that they’ve put their stamp on. Another great video from The Professor!

I bought Toto IV (33 album) in the summer of 82 and played it over and over. Not a weak song. Brilliant album from a brilliant, often (IMO) underappreciated band.
Your remarks about the top 3 struck home with me. I was born in 69 and have brothers who are 6 and 8 years older than myself.
So, I grew up listening to my parent's albums (Chubby Checker, Doors, Beatles, Everly Brothers, Elvis) and my brother's albums (Steely Dan, Queen, Eagles, Boston) and then my time came with Foreigner, Journey, Toto, The Smiths, etc. and with our generation - great music was the norm. I grew up thinking it would always be that way. The last 20 years or so have taught me that it wasn't to be. Still, I'm glad folks like you keep great music alive.
Thanks for the great interview Professor! Just a little disappointed to hear David Page criticizing his creative genius, considering the songs Rosanna and Africa. Both of those amazing compositions are the head stone to one of the greatest bands ever to record music. You can even see Luk's reaction when Page said they weren't real songs. Page, I know you're being humble, but come on man. Your creativity sets the bar extremely high. You deserve the highest of accolades good sir!
Musicianship wise man to man Toto are the most skilled band of all time.
