- Amy loves snakes. Keegan is terrified of them. I brought both Amy and Keegan with me to their first Pomona Reptile Show (Now called the "LA Pet Fair). There were so many snakes, lizards, turtles, frogs, salamanders, spiders, etc... just in the building we were in. Not to mention all the birds and aquatics in the other buildings. But our focus here was to just get Keegan through the reptile show... Let's see if she survives.

Did you see how freaking BRAVE Keegan and I are?!! We're super cute, and super brave. Barely afraid of any snakes or spiders. That was such a fun day. We should hang out again soon. Do they have shark expos?! 🦈

10:38 - Also, something that people don't think about...those pet shop animals were already shipped to that store (unless you've found a local breeder), so you're not really avoiding shipping by buying from a store.
Here's the best part of going to a reptile show with Bob: he's FAMOUS! Everywhere we go fans stop him to gush. That group of boys were ELATED to meet you!
That's NOT true. Occasionally, someone stops me, but it's rare. Those kids were great though :-)
One thing people who are afraid of snakes and spiders don't understand, I find, is that if you're calm, and you've been told you can handle the animal despite the person who owns the animal knowing you're scared; that animal will be so gentle with you, 9 times out of 10. People generally won't handle a beginner a more active animal for their first time holding their entire species, so if you're calm, just try to focus on how gentle that animal is being with your, even though you're a giant that could kill them in an instant. Focus on just how much that animal is trusting you.
It may not work for everyone, but it could help to think about how the animal gels about your interaction.
You both did amazing with the animals you fear. Well done!
I feel like my snake definitely senses my fear 😂. At this point I just need her to bite me so I can get over it and see that my cats do more damage to me than her baby Stimsons teeth ever could
@@jessam4875If you want to get your snake to bite you, try to ask them to move while they're eating. Your moving finger is close enough to food to get a nibble. Or get a really spicy corn snake. My beautiful son is the reason I don't react to snake bites anymore. The little guy was so intent on scaring me off when he was a tiny shoelace.
I see, Keegan only is comfortable holding snakes worth at lest $7,000. She has standards.

I am Super Terrified of spiders and insects.., but I love snakes 🐍.. I am so proud of her for holding the spider. I would cry then pass out ! 😢
The advice of using a cart for shopping is extremely solid! We got a childrens red wagon that we brought to this exact expo so I could grab what I needed for a monitor lizard enclosure I'm building. Felt extremely goofy but it was instrumental to allowing us to carry heavy pieces of kit around.

When I went to my first Exotic Pet Expo, I was still very phobic of snakes. But I held my first adult ball python (a pied, yellow something, with a smiley face, girl) and starting to come around to reptiles as pets. Now I still have a fear of wild snakes, but I'm okay with domestic snakes and own two crested geckos and a ball python. Two were shipped with Ship your Reptiles ;).
I would have loved to see more than 5 seconds of that Drymarchon near the end! 💜These show videos could last 2 hours and they would not be long enough. Tell Keegan she is AMAZING. If she continues her immersion therapy, I predict that she will one day get completely over her fear and actually get a pet snake.

I've used Ship Your Reptiles a couple of times when I had to move and ship my snake to myself. They're very professional and they use special labeled packages so mail carriers know that there is a harmless live reptile inside and know to keep the box upright.

Yay she held a snake! See how cute he was and just sat there being like 'Hi!'! That's what I love about Ball Pythons, they just kinda sit there like 'Okay, hi.'.
Exposure therapy does help :)
I used years talking my mom into visiting my appartment and see me handle a snake.
Keegan is adorable in that skirt. I had one just like it but Keegan looks way better in it. BRAVO for holding so many snakes. And Amy, the tarantula! So brave!!
My snakes were shipped to me - they are doing just fine. I always bring out my spotted python for first timers or nervous people. She is so chill, and only cage defensive, something she gets over after a minute or so of handling. At only 3 and a bit feet long, people are surprised I hand them such a small snake, and are expecting a 12ft monster snake :)

I used to be terrified of tarantulas, until I held one. After years of researching the "perfect" T (aka procrastinating due to unfounded fear) I now have 4.

We were there with my son on Sunday and he got to pet the rhino iguana. I think it made his whole day. He’s 2.5 and he really enjoyed feeling how the scales felt on different parts of his body.

I am terrified of lizards and snakes and pretty darn scared of spiders. I held an iguana once and he was certain I was going to drop him and I was convinced he was going to release my blood 🩸. We both survived though

I know it's not fake, or acting. I know people really are that phobic of snakes...but as someone who has never had a phobia it looks alien to me. I can't wrap my head around it.

I need you to come to my house and help me get over my apprehensions about handling my snake 😅. I took her to the exotic pet vet for a general health check and she said “her temperament was bar none” and that she was “the most tolerant snake”. Pearl (my little Stimson’s Python) didn’t get defensive at all for any of the checks they did including holding her mouth open to check her teeny teeth. Also, apparently she’s a bit chonky and I have to switch to 7 day feeds from 5-6 lol

If you want a reasonably sized anaconda, how about a pigmy red anaconda (Epicrates cenchria). According to Clint Laidlaw, there is no clade that includes all 4 (now 5 with the Northern Green, Green, Yellow, Dark-spotted and Bolivian Anacondas) that does not include the pigmy red (aka Brazilian Rainbow Boa). 😉😜
Yes, a rainbow boa would be much better than a green or yellow anaconda ;-)

You can't ship living creatures in a box in Norway. They have to be transported with a person escorting them.
Unfortunately for me arachnophobic at most reptile expos here there are also any kind of spiders and the booths are mixed, snakes, lizzards, spiders - which makes me jump on the other side of the row every few yards.
I’d encourage working on conquering that fear. It’d be good for your self-confidence and mental health. Lots of people have that fear, it’s ok. But it is an irrational fear and it can be overcome. I started my young kids off early, not wanting them to be afraid of silly things, at age 6-8 they will catch spiders outside and bring them in the house, cupped in their hands to show me. their mother freaks out, she’s terrified of them. Lol. I’m trying to get her more comfortable with them but she’s stubborn, and the kids probably aren’t helping by surprising her with them. Lol. Trying to teach them to be more considerate with her is the next step. Lol
I had my little son go with my husband to check out these spiders, I am completely fine just avoiding them for the rest of my life. And I do have a very solid vacuum for the uninvited in-house ones.

I get it though, I’m Australian and it’s not that I’m scared of huntsman spiders, I just don’t want them crawling on me lol

I feel ill not having a snake, I have a lewisi that is awesome but I need a snake but like a " special" one green anaconda bolens or etb fwc, and that's why I don't have one so expensive to buy, wish there was adoption in my area.
Exposure therapy + desensitization = decreased fear, anxiety and stress. Keegan will have a snake of her own in the next 12 months. LOL Also, have you ever noticed that Dav is always looking for some reptile or another at these shows. and has no idea where it is? LMAO

I personally am against scaleless snakes because it takes away their protection from getting injured and makes it even easier for them to get burned or to regulate their temperature. I don't understand why people are trying to do this to snakes. It seems like a fad, and obviously the argument that it can help people with snake phobias get past them is not even a certain thing. It just seems like breeders doing something just because they can. There's a reason snakes have scales, and I think it's incredibly selfish for humans to take that away purely to (maybe) make ourselves feel better. If you can't accept an animal or appreciate it for what it is, that's on you. Just my opinion. I personally think snakes look much better with scales anyway, if it's about aesthetics.
