  • Use common sense in the summer heat, don't block your grille or engine compartment venting.
Check out our website LSWrangler.com for more info on getting an engine swap done in YOUR JK.

Thanks for the video brother jeep owner.
I was worried about my baby getting hot. learned something from you today.

I concur 110% Robbie. When I built my Jeep from the beginning I kept temps in the very forefront of my design. I sunk my winch from day one so it resides below the bottom of the grille. I don't like flat fenders so I also kept the OEM fenders and liners for more of the "sleeper" look. I also installed a fairly large (11"x11"X1.5") stacked plate transmission cooler. I never had any heat issues with my 3.8 liter engine so when I installed my 6.2 liter LS (L94) I knew I didn't have any pre-existing conditions that would induce over-heating.
I now have close to 8k miles on my Black 6.2 LS powered JKUR since the engine swap and have been watching parameters and have not seen anything to be concerned with. I also just stepped from 35" tires to 37's with 4.56 gearing. I live at approx. 4500 feet elevation in Utah and with the ambient temps this past week or so being 98-103 degrees it has been performing flawlessly. If I have the A/C on and driving at speed, 70 MPH and around 1980 RPM, the fan is operating at mid-teens to 20% and engine temps are around 197-210. If I turn the A/C off and run around with the top back I see the engine temps around 204-212 with the fan barely running. Transmission temperatures running down the road are between 150-170 degrees and off-road have been around 180-190~ish. This tells me the air is getting through the transmission cooler, A/C condenser and radiator fairly efficiently. I also do not have anything other than the OEM skids as I don't care for all of the armor. I feel skids trap heat as well as make it difficult to do routine checks on the Jeep as I like to rack it and check things over both before and after a trip. I also do not have a fancy vented hood installed. I like the looks of the vented hoods but don't like rain/snow getting into the engine bay as well as pooling and freezing in the winter months.
I will be testing it next month when we take our annual SW Colorado trip and will be wheeling at 10k plus feet elevation but don't anticipate any issues based on the past several weeks of near triple digit ambient temps @ 4500' elevation.
Bottom line, keep all 7 slots open and unobstructed as well as be sure to sink those winches between the frame rails.
    Mike

From my engineering studies, the best way to sold a problem is to find out all the factors that contribute to the problem, and prioritize them in degree of how much they cause the problem. To fix the problem the most efficient way, you fix the biggest factors of the problem first, then the others. The biggest factor of why a JK has a cooling problem (sometimes), is because the cats are too restrictive and generate too much engine heat. Fix that and the engine temps, and your cooling problems will most likely go away, and you will gain 10's of thousands of miles of use from that great 3.6L Pentastar engine. Yes, you can bet money the early head failures of that engine were at the cylinder closest to the cat. They made the head tougher, but it still takes the heat. I will be a little money that cats, on the average across the USA, are responsible for the average life on a engine by at least 75,000 miles. Restrict exhaust flow, and engine temps go up,---even with a engine management system showing good on the water temp gauge.

This video has helped me relax a lot and also rethink some of the cosmetic mods that have added weight. I normally run 215-230, I have front/rear steel bumper, garvin half rack, wench, over tire rack. I also run a smittybilt overland from Time to time. I do a lot of travel up into Telluride, CO and get close to 235 on the steep rises but it always goes back down. Glad to know I should be freaking out. Thanks for the information.

Could Listen to You all Day... I have the 3.6... I never Panic when the Engine Temp Spikes at 233 after pulling a Hill... Trans Temp is always about 170 ++ - - But after this Video my Cool Grill Inserts are coming out until this Winter... I’m in Northern Cal... So Yes it does get Toasty! 😃

    Love ur tech videos.
I added grill inserts into my JK and first trip out at high altitudes with steep inclines, bam! 240*F. I have a 2009 JKU with the 3.8 and manual trans. First time seeing temps that high so I removed the inserts and haven’t had any problems since.
Can JKs with the 3.8 experience fan going into diagnostic mode at high temps?
Also, Is it advisable to lower fan “On” perimeters with a tuner help keep over all underhood temps lower? From the video it sounded like yes but then might run into fan duty issues.
    Thanks!

      @VEGASROBBI 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

No discrete fans do not suffer from the diagnostic mode they're either on or off. I recommend staying within 5 or 10 degrees of the factory settings to not overwork the fan the old brushed 3.8 fan will burn out quickly if you run it all the time.

My Jeep went up to 250deg or 3/4’s on the temp gauge. The outside temp was 124deg in Palm Springs CA. I was thinking of upgrading the fan on my stock 2010 JK 4 door automatic...

When it hit that 3/4 mark did it go back down? Did you pull over and stop? Turn the heater on?

Another great video. When talking about a cooling strategy do you think about cooling engine oil along with the transmission fluid ? I think misshimoto makes a trans cooler oil cooler combo that looks pretty sharp . I don’t know what cooling the oil does for heat management as a whole. Newer motor are using thinner and thinner oil . I’m looking forward to the next video.

In my jeep about 95-105C ?! Is that correct ?!
    3,6 JKu 2017
Vent is starting working from 89C up to 109C. All the time only in park mode and from 95-100 C in normal drive ( 90-120 km/H)

love the better , or best fan stuff but a clean burn tech engine will run almost too cool to hve any heater for truck/jeep ppl car w/no real wasted energy loss as heat like current 100yr old tech.

Who would you recommend in Phoenix AZ to do an analysis like you done here? I have a 2018 JK Rubicon with 3" lift on 35" tires and have overheating problems all summer. I put 4:88 gears in the axles and that helped out a little and now I cant trust it to go anywhere without overheating. Tonight i am changing out the fan to a new one; installing the Mishimoto 180 degree thermostat. Who would i take it too to tune as you mentioned in your video. I also put the stock grill back on and removed my winch and my tie rod guard. I also cut out the hood vents to they actually work and removed the decorative plastic motor cover. What next??? Thanks for any feedback.

I also live by Phoenix and my 2017 Jeep Wrangler started heating up I changed every part in the cooling system and it still hits the 3/4 mark driving from Phoenix past Goodyear. Bled the system and the coolant goes to the over flow and just doesn’t go back to radiator and all those parts are new . I am going to change my grill and see what happens

So what is normal running temperatures on the Pentastar? Mine has never gone over 235 but normally runs 224-228 on the Highway at 70MPH on a hot Florida day.

Fuel and rpm the combustion chamber is heating faster than the coolant can take it away found this a factor with the 488 to 513 gears . That's why the end up on the trailer
