    So many DAW drum tutorial videos begin with a stated mission to "help" creators decode the writing process only to end up with the presenter noodling around with their own mediocre beats and sounds, with little or no explanation as to why choices are being made. This tutorial breaks that trend and feels more like sitting with an experienced colleague who has taken you under their wing to highlight what you already know and present it in a way that you'll receive it. Thank you for trusting your viewers to know the difference, and for speaking directly to the heart of things. Instant subscribe.

      There are so many types of basses(reese, sub, foghorn, acid etc) in electronic dnb, jungle,house, garage. Is it possible to take a similar approach to those and explain in which contexts the different bass types work best in and maybe what kind of rhythms work best for them?

    • @Bthelick
      @Bthelick  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I'll have a think about that.
      I think just like drums it's more about recognising tonal shape, or frequency content over time.
      For example a Reese doesn't have much attack , so is bad at fast rhythmic parts, this why they are always used in a held pad way.
      Where as a bass like the Lately bass or acid would be the opposite.
      Sub is a frequency role , usually too low to hear the shape of in pure form, just there to fill the bottom frequencies.

    Really good stuff! One thing to add to the placement part would be the impact it has on transients. Kick, snare, claps and even sharp hats or thumpy basslines can really mask or amplify each other when their transients match perfectly. Slightly shifting one or the other can really do wonders for audibility and volume balance.

    Could you please make a video on compression for mixing ? 🙏🙏

    • @Bthelick
      @Bthelick  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm the wrong guy to ask for that, I just don't use them , certainly not in dance music. Live music and live bands I do but this channel is not for that.
      99% of the sounds used in modern dance music don't have any dynamics, so compressing them has no purpose.

    • @M189-i3b
      @M189-i3b ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Bthelick okay, i get it, I am also into dance music. So you don’t even you them to control the dynamic range of a pad, for instance a pad that would change in volume as you increase the filter ? Not even to glue the drums or the master track ? Thanks ✌️✌️

    • @Bthelick
      @Bthelick  ปีที่แล้ว

      no, for things like a pad filter that changes the volume too much I will always compensate the volume ,I just tie the volume to the filter in the opposite direction using either in the synth or the filter effect. never compression. Compression doesn't like constant sounds like pads anyway it just gets weird and distorted never sounds good. Compressing that kind of thing is just lazy and unnecessary, just use volume to change volume! compression is not good at volume, It does too many other (bad) things to sound.
      For drums the whole 'glue together' thing came from rock and live band engineering. In dance, if your drums need glueing, it's because they don't work together, just change them! A live drummer's output is soooooo varied in level and performance some form of compression can be needed to keep the overall thing together and if you know enough about compression you can shape the enhance the sound a little too.
      In dance all those things we have much more control over, we don't need level control because the drums don't change, and if we need a better sound then we can just change the sample!
      If you don't already know how compressors work (and the fact you're asking these questions tells me probably not) then I always advise to leave it alone completely on electronic sound. It hurts electronic music far far more than it helps.
      When you develop good ears, experience and fully understand compression you can utilise certain compressors to get subtle enhancements on certain sounds, but it's never the kind of change that makes or breaks a track, It's just the kind of thing you do to please yourself or other engineers.
      I don't use it 95% of the time , it's absolutely not necessary. And certainly never really on it to fix something, you should always fix it at the source.

    First video I'm watching from you. Only 9 mins in. And im ****ing stoked. Love valuable real information like this. You are going over so many important elements that are easily skipped in other videos. And no matter how good you are I love how you break down even the simplicity for the beginners/ and a refresher for the experienced.
