  • A 5 year old bearded dragon we took in today with a very severe case of MBD. This is a perfect example of why you should always do research before obtaining a pet to ensure you know ho to properly care for them.

My husband and I rescued a beardie from craigslist. He had MBD and was to the point that he was only scooting across the tank. He had to be hand fed for months. The previous owner never had a uvb light on him and was feeding him kale, iceberg lettuce, and cucumbers. After about 6 months of nursing him back to health he jumped up and chased after a cricket on all 4s. He was supporting all his weight and had so much energy. Today he is happy healthy and has such an amazing personality that I cannot imagine not having adopted him. Knowing this would have been his fate makes me tear up. How could anyone hurt such beautiful animals. I agree with the comment of euthanizing the owner too. shame on them... :*( When I saw him walking around his tank for the first time, I swear, I nearly cried.

That's awesome you were able to get your little guy back up on his feet, quite literally. I can't even imagine my own little girl not being able to move on her own. She LOVES running around the house and climbing over things. I couldn't bear it if she were reduced to this state of... existing. Especially if I were the cause of it. And yes, even though I let her roam around the house (or just spending time nestled on me... both of which are pretty much every day), I make sure she gets her basking time in her tank during the day and evening. UVB is a must. That's like, Dragon Owning 101.

Not too long before Christmas as a gift my parents got me three new geckos, which I love. They were from a lady who couldn't keep them anymore because she was moving.
What makes me mad is that during the period that she talked to my mother, she failed to mention that two of them have MBD. Not as bad as this poor guy, but their legs are really bent up. We found this out the day we brought them home, it broke our hearts.
Since then we've been doing all that we can to help them get stronger, which seems to be working so I'm very happy. The other gecko was relatively healthy and strong, but the lady said that he was aggressive. He isn't, he's a big sweetheart.
It's saddening when owners don't properly take care of their pets

Poor sweet baby. The worst part is they are so cheap to buy in the uk and America that ppl buy them and think they are easy trophy pets and just leave them to fend for themselves. It’s disgusting. Lucky here in nz they are super expensive (averaging $500) so not every willy nilly can purchase them, however we still have our fair share of neglectful owners. I lost 2 of my girls to follicular stasis which breaks my heart, I did every possible thing for my girls and still lost them to a condition I couldn’t foresee nor control. 💔

So so sad.. He definetly would have been a beautiful dragon if his previous owner cared enough to give him a proper life. My beardie Giz is 9 months old now and still doesnt want anything to do with veggies. Im getting worried at this point.. Hes got good weight to him and seems happy as could be but ive tried literally EVERYTHING to get him to eat fruits and veggies. I can sometimes trick him into eating a single piece of carrot, or pepper or blueberry etc, but then he ignores it and wants nothing to do with it. he fluxuates between super worms, crickets, and roaches every other day but I cant get him to eat anything else.. Any tips?? I also dust his crickets with calcium at least once a week.

We use a cheese grater to grate the veggies and then grate a little apple with it. The juices mix together and make it more appetizing. We only use greens like kale, mustard greens, dandelion or collard greens and root veggies like squashes, sweet potato, etc. The only fruit we feed is apple, and only enough for the taste. Here is a post we did on how to prep veggies for feeding. facebook.com/Naturesedgewildliferescue/posts/661651824028292

Musolino Gaming Thanks I've never heard about that but in sure there are vitamin supplements that could do the trick. A few weeks ago I begun "assist feeding" him his veggies every other day. It's more like opening his mouth and making him eat it but whatever I just don't want him to get sick. This past week I've gotten zero resistance though he used to hate it and squirm around but now he'll open his mouth with just a little pressure to his mouth. Lol I really just think he's lazy as hell and doesn't want to do any work for his food.

I’ve sat here for about 30 minutes trying to think of a more detailed comment than just saying “this is fucking terrible”. Because it is, but that doesn’t change anything or anyone who will be the ones responsible for whether an animal lives (a comfortable life) or not. Just emphasizing more so of the horror that lots of people feel when they see a dying, neglected animal like this, but overall doing nothing to help prevent or reduce the number of cases like such.
I wish there was something more to say, something which could have a change or share an idea on a way to prevent things like this! But I don’t know what that would be, all I know is that this, and every other animal in captivity that is given poor husbandry and treatment, don’t deserve such a life and shouldn’t be forced into one..... It’s sad, as we live with billions on billions of animals and hundreds of millions of different species, and the percentage which we take into our control and confinement and then produce for others to enjoy. LOVING AND GOOD OWNERS WITH APPROPRIATE ANIMALS, yes that is okay with me and the life I have with my pets and animals is so much better than it would be without them. But bad owners and animals who shouldn’t be kept captive, that is the sad mistake that too many people make, and too many animals must live through.
\\\ Please love your animals and even the ones who aren’t “of your direct responsibility.”\\\ Because more than just, *they* don’t deserve that, everything in this planet we call home will eventually come together and will have its effect on you someday, if not you your children, grandchildren, or someone you know.
    Thanks for reading.

I have a female bearded dragon I adopted from a pet store, she was given to the pet store owner in this condition. Her jaw is misshaped and she has a bit of trouble keeping her tongue in. Her hip area of her back has a distinct bump and her tail was twisted and towards the end looked like a twig. It stated to die off and turn brittle and she ended up loosing almost all of it. Her front legs both curve inward and her back legs are a bit deformed. She is tiny in size but since I adopted her about 7 years ago she isn’t as frail as she was. She has never seemed bothered by her condition or in pain, she actually is quite spunky and gets around very well. She eats great and (much to my worries) has layer eggs several times, none were viable. I am so thankful for how well she has done with her issues and so glad I had the privilege to adopt her and try to give her the best life I can. So very sorry that this poor baby you have was not as lucky, it broke my heart to see this poor baby. 😢

She was literally in a 30 gallon storage tote with a hole cut out and some chicken wire covering it! That was her permanent enclosure!! She was 12 feet long for fucks sake!! She was also severely underweight, had a pretty severe RI, and mouth rot (luckily she had been given to me before the mouth rot could get bad).
This guy has paid $2000 for this snake and couldn't pay more than $20 for an enclosure?? He told me she was very aggressive, but she never once struck at me. She musked me once and that's about it. She was even great at the vets the morning after I picked her up. The guy who owned asked me at the last minute if I also wanted to take a 30yo boa. The boa was in the same tote with chicken wire set up, he was also underweight (which if you can make a damn boa skinny, you must NEVER be feeding him). The BCI passed away a year later, but the retic found her forever home with a retic breeder (he only keeps her as a pet) and she's very happy now.
God, this video made me fucking cry...

Poor thing...Its previous owner just wasted its poor life. If God could give this poor thing another life, god bless. I hate it how this beardy had so much potential..But they just let it suffer. I know euthanizing was the right thing to do, but its breaking my heart to see that its whole life, and at such a young age had been taken away because of some assholes who didn't do they're research...

Oh gosh.. my bearded dragon Zelda couldn’t walk right.. she had to kinda wiggle herself everywhere she went. No climbing, no swimming, it was heartbreaking. We got her from our neighbors and we knew that they didn’t take care of her right, they didn’t give her attention, feed her the right food, and we now know they didn’t have the right lights for her. As soon as we got her me and my mom instantly did everything for her. Just recently she died a few days before my birthday, we didn’t know how old she was, she wasn’t eating so we don’t know if she died of hunger, or of her bone disease. But I’m happy that she will be able to run around, climb, and walk again with other beardies.

It saddens and angers me to see things like this happen that could have been avoided, since my bearded dragon died six months ago from cancer, which luckily was fast acting and so she didn't suffer much. Its one thing to have something you care about taken away by something you can't control, but then you see something like this, where a lack of effort has doomed another living creature to die a slow and painful death. There is simply no excuse for such actions.

Poor baby. I rescued and rehabbed 2 dragons who were only fed lettuce from their previous owner. I had to teach them how to eat bugs because they didn’t know how. Eventually they got stronger and were able to chase after their food. It was so rewarding.

We rescued a bearded dragon who is 3 1/2 years old and her name is Darla, the name she came with. Her owners boyfriend stuck her in a box and threw her in his car for weeks without food and light. When she was rescued she ate 70 adult crickets. We were fortunate enough to give her a good home but she may have a bone disease, not as bad as this one but she never moves and she is always scared because she was abused. I feel bad for her, she’s my moms dragon. I have my own and I got him when he was a baby and now he’s 10 months and his name is Havok.
